“A Lot Like Dirk”

January 27th, 2016
Comes with stamp of approval from former Bucs QB.

Stamp of approval from former Bucs QB.

Joe must admit the new assistant coach that has Joe fired up is offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Todd Monken. Everywhere this guy has been the offense (and the quarterback) has hummed.

In fact, Joe believes hiring Monken was an absolute steal.

Another guy on board with this hire is former Bucs quarterback Trent Dilfer. Now a BSPN talking head, Dilfer joined the Ron and J.P. show on WDAE-AM 620 to discuss Bucs nuggets, including Monken.

“I have known Todd for a long time,” Dilfer said. “Good football coach. Good communicator. [Monken is a] lot like Dirk. I think that synergy between wide receivers and quarterbacks is huge. So to have a guy who has the background of quarterbacks working with wide receivers is always important.

“I have been very honest that I liked Lovie, and I didn’t think he should have been fired. But considering this is the move they have made, I like the direction they have gone and the hires they have made to this point.”

Joe hasn’t been this excited in January about the Bucs since the last time they have made the playoffs. Yeah, that’s a long time. Koetter sure is surrounding himself with solid coaches.

    What the hell is BSPN?

  2. GhostofTedford Says:

I like this hire. I can see the offense (barring injuries) taking another big step forward. Poor Mike Smith has his work cut out for him.

    @Chromolly,

Welcome to JoeBucsFan.com. Glad you just now found the site. Wait until you hear the nickname for Peter King.

I dont follow College football too much so I had no idea who this was at first.

But I immediately started researching and damn I am excited.

Todd Monken and Jay Hayes are steals that are almost too good to be true. Like how did we get Hayes for a Lateral move?? Licht selling Jameis to ppl like hotcakes

    Promise land, here we come!

I don’t know why people are so high on Trent Dilfer. Lately all I hear from him is that he “likes” or “loves” this or that. It’s like Jon Gruden as an analyst. They LIKE everybody.

He lost me when he said he liked Lovie. Yeah, we all like him as a dude. But anyone knowledgeable about the team should know that he really hadn’t improved the team because of his own decisions.

“He went from 2 wins to 6! Tripled his win total!” Uh, those are lame stats. Upon a closer inspection, it was due to the offense taking a big leap forward against a cupcake (for NFL standard) schedule. Enough with the whole Lovie love. Hire him as an analyst and everyone could love him for a legitimate reason.

BSPN = Bullsh*t Sports Network – a moniker used to make fun of ESPN

See- Dan Patrick and “The Mothership” for more examples

All chubbed up for next season

    @Jollybucsfan

Like how did we get Hayes for a Lateral move??

Many folks believe that if Smith does the job he was hired to do, he’ll only be here one year…two max before he gets another HC gig.

Hayes was probably told he’d have the inside spot or perhaps even was told he’s the heir apparent as soon as Smith goes back to being an HC.

It’s a win-win for Hayes and the Bucs. He finally gets his shot at DC and the Bucs have an in house replacement for Smith when he moves back up to HC.

dude we are set . period

  11. scott fitzgerald Says:

at least until they get poached away when the league sees us turning it all around

  12. Bradinator Says:

So far, this is the most solid coaching staff we have had in a long time. Of course we have to wait til the season starts up to see how they do “under fire” as it were.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I like the complimentary move with the Offensive coach…..continuity with others staying in place…..
And, I also like completely blowing up the defensive coaching staff…..there was no continuity in our defense to maintain anyway.

Monkin won’t be happy until his offense scores 90….

  14. passthebuc Says:

lets not get too excited, yet. we still need to extricate ourselves from 20 very bad football players. It will take 2 more good drafts and 2 years of a new system to become good, not respectable, but good.

  15. PanthersSuck! Says:

I haven’t been this excited about the Bucs since the last time I was this excited about the Bucs!

  16. MtBucsFan Says:

I know this is off subject but how is Alstott not on this list! http://www.cheatsheet.com/sports/the-10-greatest-nfl-fullbacks-of-all-time.html/11/

  17. BoJim Says:

Man. Sure sounds like it’s going to be a formidable staff.

  18. Destinjohnny Says:

    Golden eagles!!!

  19. Buccaneers Says:

MtBucs….seemed puzzling when I saw the title of your link but did you see the list? Amazing group of talent and hard to question it. However, all those player were from a different day and age……Alstott should of made the list for being the lone dominant fullback in his era. And perhaps one of the last greats at running the ball from that position.

LMAO…lots of new peeps here lately.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF…Monkin and JW just may do that someday. Look out now…

  22. buddysbonecrushers Says:

I am tired of getting excited every off-season, only to be let down, I’ll believe it when I see it.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    buddy…exactly stay leery like me.

  24. DallasBuc Says:

    Order of operation:
    1) score points
    2) win meaningful football games
    3) praise coaching staff

  25. BucFan20 Says:

At least our new coaches may believe football begins before November!

  26. M.Stevbobucfan Says:

Buddysbonecrusher …thats what I keep saying I get excited with the new hires only to disappointed when the season start….I ll wait and see come Oct and Nov

  27. Kevin Says:

This is finally it bucs fans. The glaziers finally got a gm, one who knows what hea doing and finally hired the right head coach. Bucs will be in the playoffs next season!!!!!

  28. Buccaneers Says:

Yeah Kevin its been brutal but I believe just like you. Ever since they booted McKay the franchise declined in talent. We hit rock bottom and stayed there for about a full decade. Jeez its been awful. Just glad to see some talent sprinkled all over the field and a GM that can find more………..and sorry y’all a shattered knee aging Review doesn’t count.

We finally got so e talent to build around. Not sure if its next year but Jameis will bring us to the playoffs!!!!! Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Buccaneers…I’m skeptical still, but JW is going to take us to the SB someday. Then again if you haven’t noticed, I’m just a little bit smitten with Jameis.

I think I’m going to try to get my JW jersey signed next season. Somehow some way. Not my FSU one though. That’s my prized jersey. My wife threw it on the floor the other day and I about blew a head gasket.

  30. Trubucfan22 Says:

Buccaneers: offseason champs 4 years in a row.

  31. Lamdog Says:

Sorry Kevin: Next year schedule is brutal. A winning season should be the goal. Looking at 2 losses to the Panthers.

Trubucfan: Have to agree. I will not be sucked in this year. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

I’m still putting the heat on my wife this tax season for season tickets. So I do have some optimism. I just don’t want to miss out like I did the 90’s. Hell I deserve permanent season tickets.

Jameis if you’re bored and you like to read internet Buc blogs. Can you buy me some season tickets for all the PR I did for you last spring? lol

Based on Joe’s perception of the quality of the reporting at ESPN (Entertainment & Sports Programming Network), Joe renamed it to BSPN.
