The ghost of Simeon Rice may finally be losing its grip

Perhaps the ghost of Simeon Rice really is about to stop haunting One Buc Palace.

Rice was the last Buccaneer to nail down 10 or more sacks in a season, and that was 10 years ago, the longest current streak for a team failing to have a double-digit sackmaster.

The Bucs were hopeful defensive end Jacquies Smith, Gerald McCoy or sackless — and now injured — George Johnson could end the streak this year.

Yesterday, Smith’s chances improved. The official NFL review of the Bucs-Eagles game was completed and, rightfully so, a full sack that was credited to Howard Jones is now a half sack for Jones and a half for Smith.

So Smith now has six sacks on the season, with six games to play. He’s also healthy, after missing two games with a bad ankle.

What’s even more stunning is Smith has 12.5 sacks in 15 career starts for the Bucs. What a find by Bucs general manager Jason Licht, when he picked Smith off the street in September of last year.

J Smith also had a sack on Cam Newton in the Panther game that was not credited. He chased Cam out of bounds way behind the line of scrimmage when Newton was clearly in a passing mode.

Newton stiff armed Smith and ran out of bounds to avoid the tackle. Clearly a sack.

Yup, I remember! Was only a few rows from me..

Jacquies Smith is a good pass rusher but has to improve against the run. He is constantly sealed inside and out of running plays. He also missed two tackles in the Eagles game and should have secured the ball with the early fumble recovery, which was overturned. For the Buccaneers to make the playoffs we need Smith to play better.

To make playoffs everyone has to play better. Can’t wait till Sunday.
    GO BUCS!

We need constant pressure from smith. He shows a flash here or there, but he needs to be able to get consistent pressures. Something i haven’t seen him do yet. I dont care if you get a sack every game, if the other 70 plays you did nothing.

    Nowhere close to Rice.

    Or GMC.
