McCoy Explains Lovie’s Film Review After A Win

November 26th, 2015
A surprising order.

A surprising order.

Yesterday, Joe asked Lovie Smith whether he does anything specific to keep his team from experiencing a letdown after a win.

The head coach seemed a little frustrated by the question.

“I don’t know why a letdown comes into play. We don’t think that way,” Lovie said. “I’m just not a part of things going good, ‘well something bad is going to happen.’ We don’t look at it like that. We have a two-game winning streak going and all I’m talking about is No. 3 and everything positive. [I’m a glass] half-full guy. The glass is always that way, so we don’t think that way at all. There’s a lot of improvement still left to go for us, so that’s what’s occupying our time.”

Hey, Joe thought the question was reasonable. Surely, an experienced guy like Lovie, who watched is 7-1 Bears crumble in 2012, has some processes in place to help keep a team rolling.

Ironically, Gerald McCoy opened his Buccaneers Radio Network show last night talking about how Lovie and the coaching staff approaches a Wednesday after a win.

The team gets Monday off but will not watch any game film when it reports back to work on Wednesday morning, McCoy explained. The team dives into the scouting report on the next opponent, then goes out and had a physical practice, and only after practice will it watch the previous Sunday’s film to make sure any mistakes are addressed.

The order, the opposite of what many might assume, is a staff goal to immediately and completely take players’ minds off the previous weekend’s glory.

Joe likes the mindset, and it sure seems like a good way to avoid a letdown.

This team, our team, has a chance to change their mental attitude. I have thought for some time that the Bucs went on to the field expecting to lose. They wouldn’t admit it but deep down they must have doubted themselves. Now they have a chance to be winners. We have the talent on both sides of the ball (yes, the DB’s are playing well) and we have a QB. Let’s see if the Bucs can get the mental attitude to avoid the stupid penalties.

Lovies been through it. Chip Kelly and especially Greg Schiano, arent fit to hold Lovies headset. Is Lovie GREAT? I say no. Not without that ring at least. But he is a good coach who has seen it all. Anyone suggesting Guys like Schiano, Kelly, Dan Quinn are more fit to coach in this league, maybe someday but they arent there yet.
You see, people complain about this coach and that coach, but to find a coach that is definitively better than your last coach (unless Schiano was your last coach) Its just not realistic. Your best bet is getting a coach with experience like Lovie, Reid, Fisher. Guys that have built teams, had success and most of all have experience. Maybe you can get lucky and find a young stud like Tomlin.
I guess what im trying to say is that firing your coach and expecting his successor to be an all around up grade is unrealistic. Especially when the replacement has little track record as a HC. Your more likely to find the next Jim Zorn as opposed to the next Mike Tomlin. If your lucky, it’ll be some where in between.

Chip Kelly is getting fired soon, blown out by the Bucs and Lions?? Love our growth but we need to see a real big win before I’m sold. Beating backups and bad defenses is great and all but…

    Happy Thanksgiving all.

Go McCoy, he’s the man moving forward hopefully the next few years. Sorry for thread change above but man even getting worse.

Bucs are getting a great deal of mention during the Eagles game because of our performance against them……we are relevant again…’bout time!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We haven’t had many opportunities for letdowns….

    By the way……Happy Thanksgiving, Realist…

I’m sure you work very hard to find something to be thankful for….but I’m hopeful you’ll find it…..

I really don’t think that we can say our head coach has the knowledge to keep a team “rolling” when it took him two seasons to win back to back games.

He posted consecutive seasons of 11-13-11-7-9-7-11-8-10 wins before coming to the Bucs. Do those count for NOTHING. Do actual records matter more than a fan’s opinion. Again read the numbers! I did not post ANY OPINION there.

Now for the “opinion”. Read those numbers and make every possible excuse to discount the FACT that Lovie average 9.6 wins a season for NINE YEARS IN A ROW! We’ve already read the OPINION’s of Realist, Tmax, and Dallas Buc.

And so the honest questions are these IMHO. Did a coach who basically average 10 wins a year for nine freaking years suddenly lose all his ability?
Perhaps. Maybe he’s over the hill. Was the Tampa Bay franchise in such horrendous shape, not just talent wise by psychologically after all the years of losing since the Super Bowl? Again perhaps? And so maybe the task was harder than we imagined. I honestly do not know yet. But I’m certainly willing to give him more time to find out.

I am not a basher of Lovie, but his win totals were 5-11-13-7-9-7-11-8-10. So in reality, you did post a fan’s opinion. It definitely was not a fact what you wrote.

Yes the first year was 5 runs as he retooled the Bears.
Just like here – first year was a complete rebuild. They thought they had enough vet plugins to get some more wins but it didn’t happen (mcclown).
Now they have a lot in place and they are starting to roll.
My guess is 8-8 followed by 10+ wins for years after that.
