Jameis Was Playcalling In Philly

It may not have showed up on TV, but Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, was seen out of the offensive huddle a couple of times in the first quarter yesterday.

It was glaring on the opening drive, when Jameis once ran to the sideline for a play and ran back to the huddle to greet his offensive mates.

Joe didn’t ask about it after the game. It felt meaningless in the happy aftermath. But it was on the mind of offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter this evening.

On the Buccaneers Radio Network, Koetter was asked about Jameis maturing. And Koetter said while it’s critical to remember Jameis only has 10 games of experience, there are signs of a veteran maturity.

“We were having a lot of headphone issues in the first quarter yesterday,” Koetter said. “And that very first pass he threw to [Cameron Brate] about a 16 yard gain, he knew we had a certain personnel group. We only had a certain amount of plays in that personnel group. He got us in the right play, the phones were down.”

Translation: Jameis couldn’t hear his coordinator, looked at his huddle, and called a play — the correct play. It was the second snap of the opening drive. Jameis could have called timeout, but he saw no need.

Impressive stuff.

Koetter said it’s all a byproduct of the tireless work Jameis puts in regularly, alongside grinding quarterback coach Mike Bajakian.

Still, Koetter said he’s constantly reminding his own offensive staff that Jameis is a rookie and he needs to be protected by the game plan.

“Experience is still the best teacher out there and the NFL is a very humbling game, a very humbling league,” Koetter said.

Glennon would’ve called for a Checkdown

    Glad Jameis is the QB

  2. RustyRhinos Says:

Very impressive to hear this, what a great game by Mr. Winston and his teammates. Looking forward to the game on Sunday!
    Go Bucs!

  3. KingCrabLegs Says:

I am starting to expect wins instead of hope or wish we get lucky.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Remember when Josh Freeman had the same issue at the beginning of the Giants game in 2013? He looked totally lost and had to call 2 timeouts in a row….

  5. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Once again football intelligence at work. No dumbing down this offense for him with simple protections aand dink and dunk passes. Clearly more pro ready

  6. Couch Fan Says:

    In Jameis we trust.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

Thank you Lovie for that 2-14 record last season. Like some poster said a few months back. The 2-14 was a lot like giving birth to a baby, extremely painful. When the baby comes out though, it’s very rewarding. Now it’s time to show off our baby to the world.

    Something along those lines.

My pain from last season is virtually gone, thanks to Jameis Winston.

  8. AJ Says:

Yes the numbers were fantastic. And his play and growth is awesome to watch. Something else yesterday though stood out to me. There was a timeout. And the cameras panned down to the field. And you see Winston yucking it up with Eagles linemen. And after the game, Winston is surrounded by Eagles players. This tells me that not only is he getting respect from his own team and coaches. But also you see other players showing him respect too. Ask Sapp about D-linemen talking to QB’s. Its very rare and you have to earn that respect.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Maybe I missed it, but has Realist, DallasBuc or Tmax been on here in the last 2 days?

Where are you guys? In hiding?

  10. AceofAerospace Says:

I’ve called for Lovie’s job all season. What it boils down to is I want to enjoy the games and I want to win. I am enjoying them and we’re winning. I hope it continues. I think we can win every game left. Will we ? Time will tell. But I’m enjoying the ride. Go Bucs!

  11. LargoBuc Says:

87, you just gave a horrific visual that I can never unsee lol.
Its like the icing on the cake. All that hard work is translating into not just playing qb, but really running and now starting to dictate the offense. I wouldnt be surprised if Jameis had input into the gameplan. Like I stated before, that 2-14 was a neccesary evil and the result of rebuilding and going with rookies and stop gaps. Couldnt be more excited about where this team is at in year two.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Ace…if they go 6-5 I’m going to start talking wild card berth.

  13. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @87 All M.I.A.

    @Ace

Exactly. I’ve been skeptical of Lovie. Not out and out hate, but, questioning true greatness. And we still don’t know. But, I am rooting for him because I want to win.

I think 2 things going for Lovie that he didn’t have in CHI is a great QB, and a better GM picking players. He also seems less rigid recently. Hope we keep it going.

  14. mark2001 Says:

Learned a long time ago…never mind being wrong if the outcome is great. Hope Lovie is better than I thought….and if we would win the big one in a few years to come, would love to eat my words about firing him. I would add that if Koetter can continue to work the magic we have seen so far this year, and Lovie and Frazier can build this D into one like Chicago had a decade ago, this team could grow into something special.

  15. Sapp, STFU Says:

At this point, very happy the Glazers don’t listen to fans like me. I wanted Lovie’s head on a stick a few weeks ago.

  16. BucFan20 Says:

    @87
I would not run my mouth to much if I were you. Remember you shut down your man cave. Would not post. Wanted Lovie fired . And now everything is all roses. Calling out MGM and everyone. You were just as down on this team as everyone.

  17. Pick6 Says:

Still not sure Lovie can get over the hump, but I am all for him proving me wrong like Tom coughlin did to giants fans in NY. What he and Lovie have in common is both began their second stints with a playoff resume but considered too set in their ways to get over the championship hump. Tom did some soul searching when he was on the brink of getting canned and became more of a player’s coach – not a 180, just willing to change enough to get the most out of his team. Lovie seems to be gaining a newfound respect for scoring points instead of always defaulting to preventing them. Koetter and the offensive players get credit for Sunday’s explosion, but over the past month Lovie is taking more chances on defense with the mindset that the team may have to score if those risks don’t pay off

  18. Sick of Lovie Says:

Im one of the many who was calling for Lovies head. Cant say I’m completely comfortable with him as of right now but the team is moving in the direction we all wanted. So, I’m cool with him, he is slowly turning me into a believer. I will say this though, the dude had unknown, untapped talent sitting on the sidelines while his hand picked guys were pissing their pants out there. Ok, thats the last one. Go Bucs.

  19. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

The legend grows, I love it.

And we were the 1st team in NFL history to have a QB throw 5 TD passes and have a 200-yard rusher in the same game.

Impressive stuff for any QB (and team); especially for a rookie QB.

We hit the jackpot bigtime with Winston and we have all the necessary pieces to be successful.

Great time to be a Bucs fan, guys.

    I’m thinking 10-6 or 11-5 this year.

  20. Sick of Lovie Says:

    Bucfan20.

Dude, cant fault 87 for that. I’m the same way. I invest so much in this team and when they lose, it feels like they dont love me back. I get pissed, cus at the tv, throw the remote and basically alienate my wife and kids. They dont want to be around me on Sundays. I think we all (true fans) act like that from time to time. You’ve never complained when you thought the Bucs were underachieving? Dude, look at my screen name. Do you think I was a little frustated when I chose that?

  21. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

87, I think it’s time to go all with this team and have confidence that we’re gonna go on a run….

  22. Dave Says:

Buc87 does get down on the team, but unlike realist and some other pseudo fans, he admits wrong and wants the Bucs to win. I don’t think realist does. He just likes to biotch and wine.

AJ—- I saw that too. Eagles going to JW and laughing it up with him. He just has that personality. People flock to him. He is genuine and enjoys life.

  23. Dave Says:

    Erik …
10-11 wins? Would love it but he is still a rookie. It is still a new offense. The defense still does not have good defense of ends. Alexander is going to miss for games. If they could go for him to an end up at nine wins I’ll be

  24. Dave Says:

    Happy

  25. Dave Says:

Wow. Lots of typos. Was using voice. Sorry

  26. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

There are so many positives right now, but at the end of the day, great QB’s make their coaches and teams great. The NFL has always been a QB driven league. And we have Jameis. He will probably have his share of stinkers still, but he sure looks like the real deal, and if he is we are gonna have a blast for the next decade or so! Hell yeah!

  27. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

@AJ – I saw those as well. Very impressive indeed!

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

In the ideal scenario the Bucs win out, grab a wild card and ride roughshod over playoff opponents into the Super Bowl. Don’t say those ain’t these Bucs. It is within the realm of possibility.

  29. BucFan20 Says:

That means the ideal is V Jax stays healthy!

  30. lurker Says:

    as i stated yesterday…

jameis has a new hunting ground and it was the linc…

5 td’s to 5 different receivers. awesome game.

  31. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

Dave, Jameis and this team are breaking down all preconceived barriers.

Yes, 10-11 wins this year. That’s my honest gut feeling at this point. Even without Kwon for 4 games, I think we can do it.

We’ll see how it plays out, I guess….

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo understands how 87 feels about the 2-14 and the pain of having a baby….baby Hamus…Pablo went through some of those same type pains with Dominick drafts except they were more like hemorrhoids for Pablo….and what came out wasn’t a baby”

  33. BucFan20 Says:

Only because V Jax was back. Same 5 players could not score or run on Dallas. Stack the line and it is a different game. Winston and Barth would have to carry the hope again.

  34. Jameisbucsfan Says:

My only question is does Erik with clean Athletics have his own Jameis Winston Jersey yet? I remember him pre draft and how upset with the Jameis pick you were. Glad to have your passion for the Bucs and our Savior.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

BucFan20…you don’t speak for me. Ever.

  36. grafikdetail Says:

kudo to Erik with Clean Athletics! after all the crap you said about Winston… unlike others you didn’t change your screen name & allowed him to win you over…

  37. Sick of Lovie Says:

    Grafikdetail
    Agreed!

Hats off to Erik for seeing the light. Its hard to be wrong, but at least you man’d up and can admit it. I still struggle with that. Welcome to the good guys.

    Robert9, where/who are you now?

  38. godzilla13 Says:

What Winston showed against the Eagles was his growth in how he handles pressure. There were many times where he knows exactly when to get the ball out to a check down or underneath route. PFF rated Winston an amazing (+5.2) and said “Winston was brilliant when pushing the ball down the field. On throws 10+ yards he was 13 of 17 for 205 yards and five touchdowns.”

Just keep in mind with all the accolades and joy that has come from this victory, in the words of a wise man “the NFL is a very humbling game, in a very humbling league.”

  39. @FamousBroy3434 Says:

PICKGRIN- I thought the exact same thing dude

  40. BucrazeDave Says:

    Pablo, I’m still lmao 😂

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

Jameis looked like Payton Manning yesterday. He couldn’t have been better.

  42. No better way to say it Says:

Peyton is probably the only other QB that would do that.. Even Brady looks to the sideline then his armband. Probably not since the 90s have the QBs called plays.. Drew Bledsoe and Jim Kelly both made their own calls ( not all the time but really often ).

  43. LOL@joeBucFanPosters Says:

Winston is already on another level, due to his football IQ, add study habits, with unorthodox athleticism, and a cannon arm…lol. If Wiz had in in Tennessee he would have his job, and have JW playing like Big Ben or Kurt Warner. We lucked out finally and got a QB.

  44. Richard Dickson Says:

I’m certainly going to enjoy being playoff relevant, but I’m not about to call the season a failure if we don’t get in. We’re bound to at least triple our win total from last season. Everything has looked improved. If anything, this looks a lot like Dungy’s first season, where the team stumbled early but finished strong, and we all know what happened that second year.

  45. Buc4Life Says:

I’m still skeptical of Lovie. With regards to Jameis, what he is doing on the field is beyond my expectations to this point. But what he is doing on the sidelines by keeping the team charged up, in the locker room by getting everyone to rally together and on the field between plays like was mentioned above. This is something you don’t teach. This is a guy who is willing everyone around him to lose the loser mentality and fight to win. He’s not just changing what we’ve become used to at the QB position, he’s changing the culture of this team as a whole. It’s amazing.

  46. Another J Says:

I’m almost ready to turn in my” Throw Lovie off the plank membership” too!
He’s actually showing progress, and a willingness to adapt his scheme to the players that he has to work with!
    Cutting Tim Jennings also helped…

  47. buc4life1979 Says:

Pickgrin NAILED THE single most important point. Now we actually know what a franchise QB looks and acts like.

  48. bucsfan89 Says:

Im like the rest of u. Almost didn’t even want to watch their games and i would just wait for the score to scroll past because i knew we were going to lose. As a die hard bucs fan it hurt lol. No really it did though. Being young and watching derrick brooks and warrick dunn tear the league up and then brad Johnson and big Mike alstott took it all the way to the big game and win it against the raiders. Whom ive always hated with a passion. Then it all went downhill out of nowhere. I believed in josh freeman. But jameis ive watched for a long time, being from tallahassee and playing ball myself he caught my eye and i knew that if we got him things would change around. I just told most of my bucs life story. I always read your comments but never post anything so.. yeah.. #gobucs

  49. godzilla13 Says:

Did anyone else notice Jameis Winston and Bennie Logan talking between plays in the game and then after Logan approached Jameis and they walked off the field together? Appeared that those two have a relationship from somewhere? Logan is from Louisiana and played at LSU. Winston was born and raised in Alabama.
