Bucs On Pace For NFL Record 158 Penalties

Lovie’s discipline message just isn’t getting through

So what was the worst of the Bucs’ ridiculous 12 penalties today? Joe’s going to go with Mike Evans’ false start on 3rd-and-5 in the red zone.

Brilliant!

Logan Mankins even got into the stupid act.

Nothing quite like a personal foul (by Mankins) on a missed field goal attempt – after the play was dead and the Colts hit a field goal on the ensuing drive to take a seven-point lead in the third quarter.

The Bucs had a huge discipline setback today with 12 penalties for 95 yards. Tampa Bay refuses to execute consistently the “we’ll clean it up” Lovie Smith keeps talking about when it comes to penalties.

The Bucs now have 109 penalties through 11 games. That’s a pace for 158 on the year. That total would tie the NFL record of 158 held by the 1998 Chiefs, whose coach wasn’t their coach the following season.

The teams ranking second, third and fourth sloppiest of all-time also got new coaches after their respective seasons.

Joe’s not calling for Lovie Smith’s head because of penalties. But the total is astounding and a problem that won’t go away.

At this point, it might take a benching or two to stop the slop.

Makes me wonder where their heads are at. If you can’t clean up the penalties something is wrong somewhere. Sloppy and unprofessional has to end for the Bucs to be taken as a legitimate contender.

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Agree Joe…and this is one time when it does fall on the head coach.
Some benchings might be in order but who to bench. They all are doing it.

GMC gets a sack and the very next play gives that yardage back jumping offsides.

Offsides penalities are the worst of all. That’s a simple lack of discipline and focus. Blocks in the back are just as bad on special teams. Just focus!!!

Personal fouls are the next most egregious because they are selfish plays. I don’t care if the guy did just slug you…you need to learn to take one for the team and get even legally.

Holding penalties are different. The refs could call holding on every play and those are penalities of effort not just stupidity.

To use a Sam Wyche twist of words…hey we may be undisciplined but at least we’re stupid.

  4. Waterboy Says:

Penalties weren’t all on the players today those officials were awful.

You can’t clean up the penalties with AJAX. Grown man can’t get right Dumbasses

  7. yrbndr Says:

The excessive penalties by the Bucs plays like a broken record and I am sure the coaching staff has tried everything. Unfortunately it looks like a lack football intelligence. Not wanting to challenge their IQ but their football IQ is deficient!!!

  8. NewTampaChris Says:

    Bench who? Everyone?

  9. This Guy Right Here Says:

We were riding too high from that win @ Philly

We got sloppy… We played half-assed… (Forget Mike Evans’ Fcuk Ups, where was the fcukin pressure on D???)

Came back to reality though. Bucs went Full Lovie today…

  10. Steve from oregon Says:

Make Dirk the head coach, let Leslie finish our the season as the real defensive coordinator.

I don’t think they have quit on Lovie I just think the game has passed him by.

  11. This Guy Right Here Says:

If a HC can’t instill discipline upon his players, then he’s like a dad with 53 red-headed step children running wild… 7-9… 6-10… Thats who we are… Thats who Lovie is…. Come to peace with that Bucs Fans.

  12. Tampa Tony Says:

11 games in and nothing has been cleaned up. No reason to think it will before seasons end. Passive team takes the attitude of their passive coach.

  13. Larry Says:

I turned the game off in the 3rd qtr. I couldn’t bear to see the penalties called against the Buc’s while the Colts were allowed to do what they pleased. The bad thing about HD TV is you see so much and it’s sickening. It wasn’t a fair game today.

  14. @FcukTheRefsBroy Says:

I am finding it harder and harder to watch this pathetic product

Actually if you looked at the hurries and hits Hasselbeck was harassed as much as #3. In fact Hasselbeck was sacked 3 times…#3 five times but at least two of those were #3’s fault. Hasselbeck never hestitated to throw it away.

In addition Hasselbeck read the defense better than the rookie. Gee that’s a surprise isn’t it…a 17 year vet seeing more than a rookie!!! Hasselbeck knew exactly when to throw it quickly…#3 simply did not. Hasselbeck was far more accurate than #3 and btw Hasselbeck is on a four game winning streak while #3 managed two in a row. The Colts are coming off three straight seasons of 11 wins and playoffs…the Bucs..2..4..7..4 The Colts have a winning tradition and solid culture…the Bucs…are still improving. Takes some time.

Been reading your comments for awhile SPBF, and with all the chaotic comments on here, I admire your objective and rational takes…

But this game was never about Hasselbeck vs Winston.. This was straight up Lovie vs. Hasselbeck… And Hasselbeck won that battle. He may have been sacked 3 times, but there were 20+ plays where Lovie just sent 4, never mixed up any kind of pressure, just relied on his coverage, and Hasselbeck outschemed Lovie…

Yes, Koetter called perhaps his worst game of the season, and our OLine had their worst performance of the season….

But it came down to a vet HC vs. a vet QB, and Hasselbeck out-witted Lovie on this one.

When I saw the first flag throw, I knew we were in for a long day! It was pretty obvious who side the refs were on! I just can’t get over that play were, the ball clearly hit the ground, and they still called it a catch! That’s when ii tt confirmed we were being cheated! And where the heck was Mike Perrera? I demand an apology from the NFL in the mourning!

  18. Waterboy Says:

Heck I’m still trying to get over the play where 83 jumped offsides and they called it against the Bucs. Then there was the play in the first half where Evans was running a go route and the DB just about mugged him and they called interference on Evans. Then the holding call on Verner that caused off setting penalties on the strip/fumble recovery. Then there was the LB that ran into Brate on 4th and 2 on the last drive without turning around to track the ball. Then the penalty on Conte for jumping over the line to block the kick even though he wasn’t assisted. Bradshaw non fumble was also questionable.

  19. KW Buc Says:

Water … 83 is a tight end and it allowed to move
Watch the recording if you have it. Our idiots, yelled, pointed then thought they should jump

No discipline, no accountability, never has been any under Lovie. No wonder the players like him, he doesn’t enforce the basics

  20. waterboy Says:

    @KW

I’ve watched it a couple different times and 83 moved and Henry Melton #90 jumped and pointed saying “he moved”. Rewatch it at 4:52 in the 2nd quarter. The Bucs players did what they were supposed to do the refs blew it along with several other costly penalties.

  21. Simeon Says:

The vj holding call to start the 2nd half was a complete momentum killer. I said they should have just punted after that play.

  22. Dave Says:

    They got hosed today.
Evans did not do an offensive pi. It should have been on colts.
The TD run in first half was called back on a horrible hold call.
They called an offsides on D against Bucs when the O clearly moved.
There was a shot on Winstons legs not called.

That was all first half. The Bucs should have had another TD and a TD instead of a FG then. So basically at the half it should have been 23-6.

I really do hate complaining about refs but those calls were horrible and it drastically affected the game.
I will say this though, Dirk did avpoor job in the second half. Dougenator only got 2 carries in the 2nd half????? Really???? I don’t care if they are putting 8 in the box, they have got to run him more than that.

  23. SDbucfan Says:

Waterboy is dead or on! I’m am pissed if Jason ligcht don’t petion the league tomorrow! Referee #69 was the rouge referee! Go back and watch the tape! Other refs had to correct a couple more calls he made! Freaking scum bag!

  25. Dave Says:

    KW
Wrong. Ref was wrong. 83 is allowed to back up to go in motion. He didn’t go that. He flinched and took a step back. It was a false start and blown call. One of several that went against the Bucs

  26. tnew Says:

tight ends are not allowed to simulate the snap

  27. Hawaiian Buc Says:

A tight end is allowed to move!?? Lol. It’s hilarious that some people could pretend so hard to know football, and make such a ridiculous statement that most third graders know is false. Un freaking believable!!!

  28. SchlomieBarMitzvahCircumScissorStein Says:

Matt Millen made a fool of himself during that broadcast. He is an absolute verbal oaf. The ineptitude of the ref’s was front and center.

  29. James Walker Says:

Refs are throwing an average of 8 penalties per team per game. Penalties are up across the entire league.

  30. South Florida Buc Fan Says:

Tight ends may be allowed to go in motion or adjust their position, but that is not what occurred on that play. #83 clearly flinched the same as any other player that gets called for false start. If that tight end logic were true, then a tight end could never be called for a false start. KW Buc, you are wrong. Just because the talking heads try to rationalize it does not make it right. The flags were completely arbitrary yesterday. How about that hands to the face on Howard Jones? Clearly not the case on replay.

…and three other teams have MORE penalties, so we won’t necessarily get the record.
