Blame The JumboTron

In-house video prevents touchdowns.

In-house video prevents touchdowns.

What a game it was in Philadelphioa for everyone’s favorite Muscle Hamster, Bucs running back Doug Martin.

Martin ran for 235 yards on 27 carries last week, one of the best games in Bucs history and the second best of Martin’s career.

But even that wasn’t good enough to get NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Why? Probably because Martin was unable to score. He admitted as much.

Martin had three runs of over 20 yards (27, 58 and 84 yards) but he couldn’t get the ball in the end zone. Why? Well, Martin told NFL Network that the blame goes to the JumboTron at Lincoln Financial Field. On his long runs, Martin was monitoring the JumboTron hoping to use the video screen (in HD Joe might add) to make a move when he was nearly caught.

Apparently, Martin is unaware the video feeds in NFL stadiums are on a slight delay; it is not real time.

“I was looking at the JumboTron,” Martin said. “Things are closer than they appear on the JumboTron. So I just have to put my head down and run next time. I have to get in the end zone.

“I got a little grief, but in my defense I was looking at the JumboTron and I misread it.”

Don’t look at the JumboTrons, man! Especially the one at the Den of Depression. That standard def edifice will hurt your eyes so bad you’ll need an ophthalmologist.

Don’t worry Doug, just forget the video. If you continue to run the way you have, even without touchdowns, that’s a whole lot better than what most teams have.

Sorry…Dude can’t pick his own nickname

  3. BoJim Says:

He was looking at the screen while running? Don’t think I would’ve admitted that.

  4. BucTrooper Says:

The Jumbotron at RJS is about as technologically advanced as a Light-Bright.

    (Google it, youngsters.)

  5. Waterboy Says:

In his defense he had a TD on the one long run where he dived into the endzone at the end of the run but they didn’t challenge it.

  6. rfdes Says:

Boy… that’s embarrassing. I’m quite sure that I wouldn’t have admitted something like that!

  7. Sapp, STFU Says:

Nothing wrong with admitting it. Use whatever you think might help.

Look at Ronde’s Philly-Heartbreaking Pick-6 in 2002 Championship game He saw himself in the jumbotron on way into end-zone and emphasized his name on jersey as he crossed the line.

  8. Sapp, STFU Says:

Difference is, Philly realized their jumbotron is used against them so they added a delay

Between Martin getting caught from behind at the 6 yard line and being ambushed at the 1 and an inadvertent whistle nullifying a 70 yard TD pass from Brady to Amendola. I lost a small fortune.

I thought God was punishing me. I glad to hear that it was technology to blame.

    I can live with that.

He wasn’t even the offensive player of his own team.
