What’s Happened To Mike Evans?

Former Bucs tight end Dave Moore and Joe weigh in

The last standout game played by Mike Evans was November 16, 2014.

That’s nine games of being an average receiver. It’s caused a small divide at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

One Joe is always calling Evans a stud. The other Joe would like to see a lot more, and see Evans stop his decline.

Evans’ lone 100-yard game in that stretch was eight days ago, when he dropped three balls — easy catches.

Where was Evans yesterday? Three receptions for 32 yards on eight targets. And it’s not like he was running wide open, despite the Panthers having their stud cornerback Josh Norman spending plenty of time away from Evans, last year’s No. 7 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Evans was healthy and rather invisible. Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, had pretty good pass protection, too.

Dave Moore, the longtime Bucs and NFL tight end, and current Xs and Os guru of the Buccaneers Radio Network, wagged a finger at Evans’ route running this morning on WDAE-AM 620.

Moore explained a textbook comeback route by Vincent Jackson yesterday, and then explained how Evans ran the identical route but didn’t drive back to the quarterback properly. And it likely led to an interception on that play.

Evans was one of Moore’s examples of problems with fundamentals across all phases of the Buccaneers.

Yea I saw that comeback route. He either went too deep or didnt execute it right judging by the look on Evans face

  2. FR Says:

He thinks he is playing basketball with all the fake fouls and complaints to the ref.

  3. FR Says:

I LIKE MURPHY HE CAN CATCH SOME TOUGH BALLS AND DOESN’T COMPLAIN.

It’s called Michael Clayton disease… One and done…

I honestly hope Evans didn’t catch MC but it has happened here in Tampa before…

ITs Lovie Disease rubbing off on these guys…it started with all world GMC…he was a terror then lovie disease set in and now “we will get em next week” then LVD, “we will get em next week” then it had infected all world mike evans…mike evans had the fire coming from kevin sumlin and A&M now he has been around those 2 and Lovie and its no big deal anymore…time for the sinking love boat to be put down and hire a friggin destroyer and come in and clean up and let the fans be happy on their mondays for 17 weeks or more

  6. Cory collier Says:

He is still suffering from that hamstring, those things take years to really heal. He is handicapped.

  7. JJ Says:

Jameis stares at his intended targets too long before throwing. Rarely looks away as an eye fake. Makes it easy on smart corners and it must drive his receivers crazy. Look at replays of his interceptions (and many of his throws for catches) and tell me it isn’t true.

  8. DB55 Says:

This is what happens when you don’t practice. And if you’re practicing against mike Jenkins you’re just creating a false reality.

I truly believe that’s the cause of jaboos 2 pick sixes. He doesn’t expect a DB to be there bc our dbs are never there in practice. Our dbs are back peddling until they at least 5yards off the receiver.

  9. crazy Says:

Sloppy play. Sloppy results. Simple as that. Doesn’t hate losing enough to tighten up his play.

  10. BucFan20 Says:

It’s called they switched QB’s and positions he was in last year. Why is it Glennon could find him along with McClown but Winston can’t. That showed up in Preseason. But then again Preseason means nothing right?

  11. This Guy Right Here Says:

What I want to know is where’s the HC getting in his face after those half-assd routes??

    Saw something on NFLnetwork:

“Before a 1989 postseason game against the Los Angeles Rams, Parcells placed an airline ticket on Lawrence Taylor’s locker stool. When Taylor asked why, Parcells said he should go to New Orleans and send back Saints linebacker Pat Swilling, who had dominated Rams tackle Irv Pankey”

…these little things. Real Head Coaches know how to bring the best out of their players.

    Find a REAL HC Glazers!

  12. DB55 Says:

    @joe

“[Donovan] Smith was the second-best offensive tackle in the league during Week 4, though teams playing on Monday night have yet to be graded. He earned a rating of +3.7, falling in behind Buffalo’s Cordy Glenn and right above Cleveland’s eight-time Pro Bowler, Joe Thomas. “. Bucs com

Joe it’s only October. Real football starts in November. You keep forgetting that.

^^^^^^This… Lovie Disease.. Like the FL Hospital commercial with Lovie: “Is it… Contagious???”

This is a perfect reason as to why I try not to be too disappointed with Jameis (or any QB for that matter). We don’t know, nor do we have the knowledge to understand, whose fault it is on an interception. Obviously some (probably most) of the picks have been his fault, but we as fans just don’t know. We don’t know if it was an inaccurate throw, the receiver ran the wrong route, the receiver ran a poor route, or the QB made a mistake on what route he thought the receiver was running.

I’ve learned a couple things about Jameis. He can make some incredible throws. I mean throws very few NFL QB’s can make. He never stops fighting. There’s no quit in this guy. Sometimes that’s a bad thing (he tries to do too much), but most of the time it’s good. On the bad side, the game looks like it is moving too fast for him at times. He often looks very nervous in the pocket. My goodness he is slow! I don’t think he could outrun one player on our team, including the linemen and Glennon. He has moments of really bad accuracy and decision making that makes you shake your head. I believe (and hope) that is just a rookie being a rookie. Only time will tell.

He was targeted 17 times during the Texans game. I don’t think Winston has a problem finding Evans. It seemed at times Evans was the only WR on the field @ Houston to Jameis. or did you forget?

  17. kraymuthaphukinglocz Says:

this team is pathetic period there is no fight in them lovie dovie looks clueless koetter is predictable linebackers cant tackle for losses corners cant cover for nothing safeties give up too much space ends cant pass rush is pathetic all around

  18. Ray Rice Says:

This is what happens when you practice against garbage !

  19. BucFan20 Says:

Let me put it in better English for you 87. That means Evans catching the ball and gaining yards. There is NO connection between Evans and Winston at all.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I was the only one who said before the season that Mike Evans still had to prove he wasn’t a one year wonder. That said…

…I don’t believe he is. There are plenty of factors in his reduced performance. Coming back from injury, during which he had no time to get chemistry properly developed with his new QB. A delay in learning the offense and practicing it. That fact that the offensive line is allowing pressure on Winston, and Winston not being all that accurate yet.

So I don’t think it’s right to blame Evans. He’s going to be really good.

  21. passthebuc Says:

So I guess it means that the brain trust is looking ahead to the next draft they can screw up. The Buc’s are not on life support, they have been rushed to the hospital and in Code Black’s arms. Code Black is that new series that attempts to bring the dead back to life.

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Big dog put the blame for the loss all on Winston because he is a rookie, Lovie gets a bye.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I guess every interception is on the reciever…..There is absolutely nothing wrong with Mike Evans that a couple of games won’t cure….he is rusty….coming off a hammy that is probably still tweaked a bit…or he is fearful of going full speed.

Mike Evans has been, is and will be a stud.

  24. R.O. Says:

Problem is we have no speed what so ever on offense.. No quick twitch athletes. Our WRs are undersized TEs that dont get separation M2M. Move VJ inside to TE and bring R. Hall up.

  25. louis Says:

From the beginning of pre season games, I noticed something missing from Mike Evans game…there was no sharpness or crispness to his stride or moves…like he was off two steps from his game…..I think he is at 85% recovered…I hope that he is beter after our by week

  26. vegabuc Says:

Oh Mikey, Mikey, Mikey. What happened to your hands big boy. Come on man!

  27. bucrightoff Says:

What’s clear is Buffalo and us will both badly regret now taking Odell Beckham instead. Has the NFL record for most catches in his first 15 games, and is an elite route runner with stupid good hands. Evans at this point is basically a guy you throw the ball up to and do deep crosses/outs. We need a bit more from him.

  28. Tom Edrington Says:

    Two words: SOPHOMORE SLUMP

  29. ndog Says:

One of the real problems I see on this offense is there is no real speed deep threat on this team. D backs are sitting on all our routes and jumping everything with no fear of giving up a bomb. Until we just throw it up deep, because our big slow receivers can run by anyone, we are not going to be a productive offense. We need to add a real number 1 receiver to the list of things we need. It not just me saying this as the other day I was watching NFL network and they had a list of top receivers in the league and guess who was missing. We have no receivers on this team that can make someone miss and get YAC everything is a jump ball or a tight throw. Our personnel on offense is poor and doesn’t even match what we are trying to do.

MIKE EVANS CANT MAKE CATCHES WHEN JAMEIS WINSTON THROWS 4 INTERCEPTIONS!!!!!! and afumble too smh

I’d really like to see articles credited to certain Joes rather than the uncredited articles presenting a United opinion on everything. Could be a tad more entertaining

  32. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Why is this coaching staff so dumb?? Is it not obvious to everyone that tall receivers are best matched up against safeties? In other words, throw long passes down field!!! Guess what? That makes it easier to run the balll! God I had this entire #&$*#*%$ coaching staff

  33. Drywaller Buc Says:

This coaching staff is so dumb… Why is Glennon sitting on the sidelines when Jameis has 3 first quarter turnovers??? That is beyond insane…. That is retarded. Even freeman wasn’t this bad.

  34. Drywaller Buc Says:

    Americas INT machine

    Mike Cla-yvans.

  36. Capt Blighe Says:

When a guy misses training every year because of his hammy.
Maybe he’s just wants out of practice

  37. mike10 Says:

Lol, we’ve got a rook QB, that throws off his back foot and stares down his receiver from the snap EVERY PLAY. Sure some dropped passes, esp in HOU, but a lot of passes thrown poorly.

When was the last time he was targeted deep?

  38. ndog Says:

So let’s get this straight you want this o line to have to block longer as we all know it takes these slow receivers FOREVER to get downfield. Yeah that’s a good idea. You people never cease to amaze me.
