Jameis Looks Up To Newton

Jameis considers Stinking Panthers QB Cam Newton a role model.

In some ways, Cam Newton had it rougher than America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, in his path to the NFL.

Like Jameis, Newton became a hero if not a living legend in leading his college (Auburn) to a coveted national title in his first year starting, all while being raked over the coals for public (mis)perception.

Then, like Jameis years later, Newton, despite the noise and howls from the public, was drafted No. 1 overall.

Jameis, an Alabama native, watched Newton’s rise to fame close-up (Jameis nearly became Newton’s successor at Auburn). So when Jameis found himself in an eerily similar position, he naturally reached out to Newton for advice.

The two bonded and Jameis spoke yesterday of how he and Newton are tight.

“I’ve talked to Cam numerous times,” Jameis said. “He’s just a great person for me to look up to and kind of model my style off what he’s been through. We’ve basically been through the same thing – the Heisman, then going to the league. He’s definitely a great person to try and seek things to do to better myself.

“What I learned from most of the guys that mentored me [including Newton], just be yourself. We were blessed to play this great game of football. He loves football. He exaggerates how blessed he is to be playing. That’s what I do – bring energy. He’s a very enthusiastic person, so just bring energy to the field and be yourself.”

Speaking via conference call from Charlotte, Newton discussed his bonding with Jameis.

“For him, it was kind of like you had some of the same similarities of the whole process,” Newton said. “The thing that me, myself as well as he had to learn is that it’s a long process. The thing that he had that I also had was that determination of success and winning, but knowing you’re coming into a league where you are going to the worst team, so it’s a learning curve and it’s a learning process.

“He’ll be alright with his forte of him being him – the whole gamet of being a Heisman Trophy winner and the first overall pick. It’s something that he’s learned to grasp and accept with open arms.

“I wish him the best and will always wish him the best, I’m a fan of his work. With him being who he is there [was] going to be a big target on him no matter where he went.”

Unlike Newton, Jameis confessed he has not choreographed a personal touchdown celebration, like Newton has with this Superman routine.

“I don’t have a touchdown celebration at all,” Jameis said. “I just go out there and play. When I score a touchdown I’m happy so whatever comes over me, man, I’m going to express it.”

As for developing a touchdown skit, Jameis said he has higher priorities.

“Right now I’m working on third downs and scoring in the red zone.”

Yeah I love that superman routine especially when they are down by 40. Real mature dude to look up to. Want to follow a real leader look in your own locker room. Hardy Nickerson might be able to show you a couple of things about work ethic and leadership.

  2. Bucnjim Says:

The Panthers D only giving up 16 points a game is the reason for their recent success and less to do with Scam Newton.

Cammy is at the top of my list of QBs I don’t like…..but….If he were a Buc….I’d probably like him.

JW: Hey Cam…how did you duck the man when they were tyring to get you for taking huge sums of cash for the family while at Auburn?

CAM: Just have your home boys destroy the video showing you gettin jiggity with that girl and her screaming NOOOOOO!

JW: Thanks Cam….what about the investigation!

CAM: Hey JW…just use my high priced attorney and refuse to answer any questions! You are such a star…your 2 years will be over before they know it!

JW: Thanks CAM….Instead of 25 years to life, I am now these idiots version of “America’s Quarterback”!!!! I have the media (Big Poodle) so fooled they even think I should have been the #1 pick in the draft!

CAM: Keep them wondering!! I took nearly a million dollars and they still made me the #1 pick!!

JW: Ok…hey CAM…who do I call about my two left feet, the hundreds of interceptions I am going to throw…and the fact that this MG8 guy may actually be a better QB1 than I am??

CAM: Sorry JW…I can’t help you there! I may have taken the money…but I am a #1 talent!

Best part of this whole article!

  6. OneLove Says:

Full Disclosure, I’m starting CAM and the Carolina defense this week!!! I’m expecting to get at least 50 points from the defense and about 20 from CAM!!

    WOOOOOO!!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “Dominik is such an IDIOT for not drafting LUUUUKE!!! *SOBS*”

  7. Ray Rice Says:

As long as he doesn’t sulk and pout like a little BIATCH on the sideline like Cam it’s good.

  8. Joseph Mamma Says:

Wow America’s Quarterback was skipped over for offensive rookie of the month. So the so called pro ready QB is losing out to the spread QB who is going to be a project. Color me shocked that our incompetent club didn’t know what they were talking about.

  9. KJ Says:

All this Newton hate from Bucs fans is ridiculous. We’re just so pre-conditioned to hate on everything because of our own crappy players and team. “Yeah – Cam Newton, what a bum! All that winning of the division in back-to-back years, Offensive Rookie of the Year award trophies, playoff appearances, with literally nobody on offense around him except a tight end. Loser!”

  10. AmbushBuc Says:

Cam is one of the most overrated players in the NFL today. He’s progressed zero since entering the league, and he shows a complete lack of maturity both on and off the field. That superman thing has got to be the dumbest celebration in the history of the NFL.

  11. Joe Cool Says:

…and people think Jameis is immature.

  12. bucrightoff Says:

Yeah I gotta agree with KJ. People love to say Cam is overrated, but after reading this article maybe they’ll feel different. Remember, he arguably has the worst set of skill players in the league playing with him (Ted Ginn #1 WR???)

  13. AmbushBuc Says:

Sorry, but that page shows its bias when the first two gifs on it they call “accurate” but were in fact terrible passes. The first one the WR was wide open, but the ball was thrown well behind the receiver, and the other one was about 5 yards too far in front of the WR on a crossing route.

  14. bucrightoff Says:

He was throwing to Ted Ginn. He could have hit him square in the hands and it wouldn’t matter. The second one isn’t so great though. Still doesn’t make Cam overrated. Especially since nobody actually thinks he’s a top 10 QB (look it up, I doubt you find him in anyone’s top 10)

Besides Joe just posted another one praising Cam. I’m not saying we need to like him, but he’s much better than anything we have at QB at the moment, and he’s playing the best football of his career.

  15. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

As long as Jameis stays in the pocket, he can look up to Cam all he wants
