Is George Johnson Tired?

Bucs starting defensive end George Johnson

Joe couldn’t believe what was coming from the mouth of Leslie Frazier this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

Joe had a major Da’Quan Bowers flashback.

Asked about starting defensive end George Johnson being sackless as a Buccaneer and a little disappointing, Frazier implied Johnson is getting tired in his role.

“We’re trying to get more consistency from him,” Frazier said of Johnson, “where we get some of those good plays more often. Hopefully, this will be that week. He’s not accustomed to probably playing as many snaps as, and even having the role that he has here with us. You know, he’s never really been a starter.

“So he’s getting acclimated to that along with the number of snaps and the things that we’re asking him to do. And at times, he’s been pretty good for us. At other times, you know, we need to get a little bit more. He’s working hard in practice this week. He’s been doing it all along. And just need to get more consistency.”

Hmm, Joe never heard such talk about defensive end Jacquies Smith last year. All that was seen, and heard, was Smith attacking his position with a relentless motor, and he had far, far less NFL experience than Johnson.

Not acclimated to the number of snaps? It’s October!

Joe finds this very troubling. It almost (not quite) reminded Joe of Frazier referring to Bowers’ conditioning last season. Bowers, of course, is out of football and enjoying his gospel career.

Sounds like high time to promote Gholston to starting staus, while cycling him out with Melton and Johnson. Gholston has been beasting lately and Johnson has been trash.

    Coaching

  3. DB55 Says:

Look man it’s simple, people look around and notice that no one cares. The owners, coaches, leaders they just don’t care. It’s another day at the job. So why should the new guys care. It’s a losing culture at OBP and no one cares.

  4. salish_seamonster Says:

Coach didn’t use the word tired. Could just be a matter of mental focus, down after down, that he’s not accustomed to. Some guys excel in a part time role, but not so much in full time.

  5. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

IF I WAS THE GLAZERS, I WOULD START AT THE TOP AND FIRING MY WAY BACK DOWN THE LINE, NO FREE RIDES HERE , AND MAKE SURE THEY ALL KNOW IT TOO . YOU DON’T WORK YOU DON’T GET PAYED AND THAT THE NAME OF THE GAME , THIS SH IT HAS GOT TO STOP IF THE BUC’S ARE GOING TO BE A GREAT TEAM, IF YOU WANT TO BE A PLAYER YOU BETTER HAVE HEART FOR THE GAME IF NOT FOR YOUR TEAM, STAND UP AND BE ABLE TO WALK UP AND TAKE YOUR PAY DAY , INSTEAD OF WALKING UP BACKWARDS AND REACHING OUT FOR YOUR CHECK, EARN YOUR MONEY , DON’T BE LAZY !!!!!!! THERE IS AN INFECTION ON THIS TEAM SOMEWHERE AND YOU HAVE TO THROW SOME ALOHOL ON IT TO FIND IT !!

  6. Ray Rice Says:

And I’m tired of hearing this dumb a$$ $hit! MF you got paid good money. Now get on the FUKN field and produce. Ain’t got time for tired MF’s!

  7. DallasBuc Says:

Who the hell is George Johnson?…ohhh yeah
What was he brought in here to do again?…ohhh yeah
Who the hell is responsible for signing and starting this scrub on our Dline?…ohhh yeah
Why are we worse of now than when Morris and Schiano were here?…ohhh yeah

  8. DefenseRules Says:

@CAN’T FIX IT … “IF I WAS THE GLAZERS, I WOULD START AT THE TOP AND FIRING MY WAY BACK DOWN THE LINE …”

AND CAN’T FIX IT, IF I WAS THE GLAZERS, I WOULD START AT THE TOP TOO … AND FIRE MYSELF FIRST.

Since our Super Bowl year, losing seems to have become one of the two constants. The ownership of the Bucs is the other.

(Caps are fun by the way but they kinda lose their impact when EVERYTHING’S CAPITALIZED)

  9. DallasBuc Says:

Maybe can’t fix it is hard of hearing and screams everything he says out loud

  10. GhostofTedford Says:

If we lose to Carolina and Jax that put’s us at 1-4 heading into the bye. Then we have a brutal stretch of games, Falcons, Giants, Cowboys, Eagles, Colts. Is it seeming possible we could very well duplicate our 2-14 season of last year? That would make Lovie 4-28 in 2 seasons. How on earth do the Glazers keep him?

  11. buc4life1979 Says:

Sounds to me like Georgie boy needs to be relegated to his previous successful back-up role, while a player like William Gholston who has been doing more on the field despite less playing time than johnson, needs to be given the starting shot.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    LOL!

First…it is October, but the season started in the middle of September, so it’s not like we are over a month into the season!

Second…I said all along George Johnson was not an answer to our needs at Defensive End. But no…EVERYONE HERE insisted we bring him in. Never mind that he was half a decade into his career before he produced ANYTHING and even then it was an average performance.

So hey…all of you “experts” got your way…all the while saying I was out of my mind, stupid or an idiot. And yet. I’m proven right again. And again. And again. Only uncommonly wrong. Toot. Toot.

Now listen up, and actually let it set in…Defense had been patched while they built the offense. Next draft, the Defense will be put together properly. We actually have a bunch of good pieces. The needs are just in a couple key positions. DE being the most important. We get those pieces covered in the next draft, allow a little developmental time…and the Buccaneers are one of the best teams in the league for years to come.

We are close. Unlike the one who “claims” to be a realist (and is anything but), take my word for it. This expectation is much more realistic.

  13. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We WILL lose this week. Carolina is just too good on defense AND offense.

However…the following two games we have a chance to win. The Jags are getting better, but they are beatable…more so than any team we’ve faced so far.

    The Redskins are REALLY beatable.

And really…we can usually split the games with Atlanta, so we might win that game too.

After this week we enter a stretch of games that are winnable to a developing offense and patchwork defense. 3 games in which we have a good chance to win.

If we manage to win 2 of them, that will put us at 3-4 as we enter the 8th game (Giants)…which we’ll lose probably. But the good news is that will put us one game ahead of where I thought we would be by mid season.

And if we can manage to enter midseason at 3-5, then we face the Cowgirls we might win. They’ll probably play Brandon Weeden (hopefully), if we’re lucky. Then we face the Eagles…who suck this year.

We MIGHT go 5-12 this year…but hopefully the offense will keep getting better and we’ll win the last 3 games and do better.

Won’t matter though…next year is when we’ll see the biggest step forward…when Lovie gets to draft his defense.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Ha ha ha Bonzai I’ll keep saying 5 wins. Yet I don’t remember there being much debate over George Johnson in here like you’re boasting.

5 wins with much SEEN improvement and Lovie stays. Anything less and he’s toast.

  15. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

What is Leslie supposed to say, yeah he sucks and we have to deal with until we draft a stud DE next year. The dude had never started anywhere because he’s not a good player. Jesus Joe it really is that simple. They will make excuses for him this year and then cut him when the season is over. Carreer backups don’t turn into Pro Bowlers simply because a bad team is desperate and starts them. If you need proof of this I would remind you of the McCown experiment. In fact you Joe made that claim about McCown over and over. Why would this scrub lineman be any different?

We MIGHT go 5-12 this year.

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

Wow, we win at Falcons and we win at the Redskins. I don’t think the Bucs beat either of those teams in the 6th and 7th games. The Jags and maybe the Bears are possible wins, the rest look better than the Bucs. Maybe 3 or 4 wins total my guess.

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

I thought all the sheep “Lovie loyalist” said that the big turn around would be year 2 for the defense???? Now its year 3????

    @Buc1987

Did you hear the news!!! The Glazers are negotiating stadium improvements, Now is out chance to have the pirate ship sink when the Bucs lose!!!!! We should just barge into the meetings and show this video on a laptop!!!

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Hey Realist, I heard Old School read your comment about the pirate ship on the podcast! He thought you were a Panthers fan!! Lol!!

  20. Rod Says:

So the guy has always been a part time player and the coaches are saying he’s not really giving full effort on all plays in part because he doesn’t have the stamina of a starter OR he doesn’t really know how to pace himself and he’s blowing his load early. If he’s taking plays off because he’s spent, well that’s an issue but it can be corrected by just rotating him more. Anywho I’d assume, hope, that’s what Fraz meant.

  21. firethecannons Says:

OMFG–cantfixit is right –the infection needs to be lanced then peroxide ,bleach and alcohol–no more free ride for this loser–Frazer should be the first to walk the plank.

  22. unbelievable Says:

DB55 is right- I would bet 70 – 80% of the team feels that way.

@Bonzai, I don’t remember ppl clamoring for him that much either to be honest. I remember many saying the trade was a waste at the time.

  23. bucsbedabest Says:

Why is George Johnson is struggling? He is playing against the left side where you usually find the other teams best OL. He has faced some heavy hitters. This week is his week.
Texans – LT Chris Clark bounced back from a poor Week 2 showing to have his best game since the divisional playoff round back in 2013, when he was on the Denver Broncos. PFF said he had the fifth-highest grade among all OTs this weekend, and his pass-blocking grade was the third-highest.
Saints – LT Terron Armstead is currently the number one tackle in the NFL per PFF.
Titans – LT Taylor Lewon is currently rated number 7 overall for LT by PFF.
Panthers – LT Michael Oher is currently rated 31st overall for LT by PFF.

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @road warrior

You do understand what the word MIGHT means? Right?

The fact that it was in caps stresses the word. Watch that object flying over you head, bud.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @BuccaneEric75

He probably IS a Panthers fan. Only a division rival (or Raiders) fan would spew such hatred toward everything a team does.

The irony is how so many people here actually listen to him. I mean, it’s not like the fan of another team would suggest anything bad for the Bucs…right?

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“@Bonzai, I don’t remember ppl clamoring for him that much either to be honest. I remember many saying the trade was a waste at the time.”

When word of the trade came out, I voiced that it was a mistake. EVERYONE…and I mean EVERYONE, disagreed with me. I pointed out that it was another example of how horrible Jason Licht is too. People still disagree with that.

In two years, fans here will be saying Jason Licht was the worse GM ever…and not one of them will remember how much I told them so from the start.
