“The Biggest Offset To Having An Offensive Line That Can’t Pass Protect”

The Bucs’ offensive line cannot be expected to pass block consistently. Evidence to the contrary simply doesn’t exist.

Yes, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter can do things to help keep Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, upright when he drops back to pass. But there’s really one major key to a healthy Jameis, and it’s a pretty easy call, says former Bucs quarterback Shaun King.

One of three QBs to lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, King joined the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 this afternoon.

“I think we have Doug Martin. We have Charles Sims. We have backs. I think it’s important that we go out and force the run game,” King said. “We have to establish early that we can run the football. That’s the biggest offset to having an offensive line that can’t pass protect, is if the defenders know they have to defend the run first. So I’m going to be very aware of the play calling. You know, even if we’re not having success early in the game, I think it’s important that they stick with trying to run the football.”

Joe agrees. If there’s one darn thing the Bucs proved in preseason, it’s that they have a very-ready running back that might just be able to make his offensive line look good. And Ali Marpet was much better as a run blocker than in pass protection.

You want to keep Jameis alive and the Titans honest, then dig in with the ground game and make the right calls off that commitment.

Fine, but for god sake, we dont need to piss off Doug Martin….so no more muscle hamster…

    Martin Scores Easy?

    See what I did there?

  2. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I love Muscle Hamster, but if we have to change it, Dougernaut works for me

  3. Dave Says:

    Run
    Play action
    Run
    Screens
    Run
    Short slants
    Run …
And a few deep balls at the right time.

Basically get the ball out and pick your spots and run run run just give Doug Martin some rest and use the other backs now and then.

So now Joe loves Lovie ball. Hmmm…

    …Me too!

In lovie, Licht, Koetter and Winston I TRUST!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  5. K2 Says:

The way to counter the rush are slants and quick outs! Up the gut runs in the the rush…just doesn’t work well. We all know that Tennessee will send the kitchen sink on the first few plays. If we complete the first two slants they will move the safeties down into the box to stop the slant. The three play is a pass over the top…touch down. Alternative…run in to the blitz 3 times then punt. We should beat Tennessee by 14 points and if we don’t I worry about the season.

I hate Lovie/Dungy/Gruden ball! But I’m perfectly happy to see it for the first part of this year.

It only makes sense. Rookie OL need time to develop the technique and teamwork to become an effective pass blocking unit. Run blocking is much easier and more dependent on simple physical power. Marpet established himself as mean in camp with fights and road grading action. So yes that’s where Marpet’s biggest skill lies.

JW still hasn’t learned that tossing the ball out of bounds IS the play when nothing’s available, we need to protect him from himself.

So yeah pound the rock for at least the first part of this year.

  7. JAB83 Says:

When we changed it to appease him the Mussel Hamster disappeared and some dude name Doug Martin showed up!!! Long Live The Mussel Hamster!!! (best nickname EVER!!!)

  8. JAB83 Says:

Other wise you know your boy on BSPN will start the “my favorite martin” line up again!!!

  9. LargoBuc Says:

I expect the Titans to stuff eight in the box and make Jameis beat them. They know we are going to run early, so I also expect alot of short passes with three step drops early until they adjust. Then we can run and soon after that our Dunkaneers will be able to do work on their secondary. But if we just run into their overloaded front and put Jameis in third long, thats exactly what theyre expecting and we cant fall into their hands like that.

  10. DefenseRules Says:

Shaun King hit the nail on the head: run it down their throats until they show that they can stop the run. If they can’t stop it, keep running it, chew up the clock, and wear down their defense.

  11. BFFL Says:

Why draft a qb #1 just to turn around and hand the ball off? The ol has shown they can block 1 on 1 but has trouble with blitz. It’s up to qb to make a team pay for blitzing. That’s why the great ones always seem to have a good Ol. He’ll, Glennon can turn around and hand the ball off.

    @LargoBuc

Sounds like a good plan to me.

  13. Big Irish Says:

MJD won the rushing title in JAX with DK as the OC. Double Duece is gonna have a great year and JW will survive.

  14. FLBoyInDallas Says:

What a resource the Bucs have with all these professional play-callers on JBF. All the Bucs need to do is have Koetter check the JBF message boards in-game with live updates and all the plays will be provided free of charge. Eventually they could fire Koetter and have their very own OC-by-fan-committee. Does Dirk plan to call a run off Marpet on the right side? Forget that…run a slant, because fans all know the Titans DC never saw a slant before and will be totally taken by surprise. Super Bowl here we come.

  15. Buc since '74 Says:

LargoBuc makes a good point about 8 men in the box. We need to loosen the Titans D will slants, screens, etc. I pray we have success running the ball early, and if we do, pound the freakin rock! If the Titans do stuff the box, we can’t play into their hands with piles of dust and 3rd and long. This is where Koetter needs to earn his keep and get the ball our real quick.

Most of you already know this so please excuse the repetition, but this really made me confident in Koetter: Atlanta had an absolute crap line last year due to injury to everyone. By the bye week the line was made up of grocery baggers. ATL averaged like 325 yards per game before the bye, and 380 yards per game AFTER the bye!! Really? Now that is an OC!
