Linebacker Love From Jason Licht

September 2nd, 2015

jason licht 0501Don’t call Joe a woman, but Joe did watch the new “Red” video on Bucccaneers.com.

“Red” is this new thing the Bucs do that’s supposedly geared to female Bucs fans.

Regardless, the general manager was talking to Red captain Casey Phillips, so Joe was watching.

In about 78 hours, Tampa Bay must trim its roster to 53 players, aka make final cuts. Spots up for grabs include backup linebackers who play a huge role on special teams.

Following bubble-residing linebacker Jason Williams’ fail in punt coverage Saturday night, Joe takes very seriously any words from the GM on linebackers looking good. Licht volunteered love for a former Bears linebacker with the Bucs, a guy who will be showcased tomorrow night against Miami.

“Khaseem Greene has had a really good camp,” Licht said. “We’re going to get an extended look at him.”

A Schiano man from Rutgers, Greene was a 2013 fourth-round draft pick by the Bears. They cut him in May, and the Bucs pounced with their powerful waiver claim. Courtesy of the worst record in the NFL last year, the Bucs have first rights to any player waived.

It seems Tampa Bay has a pressing need for strong special teams play from linebackers. Joe doesn’t expect Lavonte David, Kwon Alexander and Bruce Carter to be called on for fourth-down duty.

The top of the LBers depth chart is among the best in the NFL. David, Alexander, Carter and Lansanah represent a talented group that will be formidable on Sundays this year.

Casey Phillips could eat crackers in my bed and would not get scolded – that’s for sure…

They sky is the limit for our linebacking core and I’m REALLY excited about watching Kwon Alexander develop!! It’s refreshing to see some REAL SPEED at that position again!!

Now If Licht can only pull off a trade, for a solid LT & G

Maybe he can trade Glennon to Buffalo for LT/G – Cordy Glenn

    Or

Maybe he can workout something w/ Baltimore for LT/RT – James Hurst

    (Hopefully a combination of both)

We gotta do something though, because this lot ain’t gonna cut it.

Sure we need a respectable Guard & Center too

But we can pick up a few solid Guard/Center combos off the waiver wire

    Solid Prospect like:

    -Broncos G/C -Dillon Day
    -Bengals G/C -Trey Hopkins

Might hit the wire soon – So Get ready – Should be a wild ride

LT/G – Cordy Glenn is in last year of his rookie contract; so a trade is possible.

Are we giving up on Donovan Smith already? Wow. He’s rookie guys and looks better than Cordy his rookie year. I think we’ll see growth with Smith
