“He Is Not A Rookie Throwing The Ball”

September 10th, 2015

A legend weighs in on Jameis Winston

Crusty, crafty, 78-year-old Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau, the Tennessee Titans’ mad scientist defensive coordinator, had a lot to say about Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.

LeBeau talked to the Tennessee media this afternoon and raved about Jameis, saying his arm strength is among the greats of the game, and he doesn’t look like a 21-year-old rookie.

From the Titans’ official website.

“There is no question this guy is not a rookie throwing the ball,” LeBeau said. “He has thrown the ball all his life, and he is a proven winner. I don’t know how many times he’s brought his football team back from behind. He is a proven winner and he is not a rookie throwing the ball. It is his first year in the NFL, and he’ll get better as he goes along. But I don’t look at this guy as a rookie passer at all. He can throw the ball any place and get it in there….He has as much arm strength as I have seen, and I know he is going to have confidence because he has an established track record as a winner.”

Joe hopes the remaining Jameis haters — and those lurking in the weeds — got all that.

Regardless, it’s a clean slate for Jameis, and Marcus Mariota. It all starts Sunday.

Man, Joe is so in love. That’s OK.
At least it’s not Johnny Football.

    Message to the o-line:
    WE MUST PROTECT THE MESSIAH!
    Go Bucs!

  4. Tampa Tony Says:

I hope Jameis makes Lebeau make this same exact face on Sunday

  5. WalkdaPlank Says:

Yet Jameis WILL make rookie mistakes this season as he is in fact…..a rookie. We all know that it doesn’t matter how good you were in Pop Warner, high school, or college. Jameis may not be new to slinging the ball, but neither was any other rookie QB that ever came into the NFL. He’s never a faced an NFL defense and will make mistakes.

Let’s just hope he keeps them to a minimum, and beats the brakes off the Titans this week.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

3 more days and it’s HERE!

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

What’s his secret? Take your hat off for a closeup. LeBeau doesn’t look a day over 60. He knows how to inflate the opposing QB’s ego. Hope that ego sends you back to Tennessee with a loss and a few more wrinkles.

  8. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I know it was only ONE pass but that 3rd and long pass that JW threaded the eye of a needle to Tim Wright…he dropped and got cut..but I have NEVER seen any Buc QB with that arm strength. OK maybe JFro or Dilfer…but those guys thread a needle…hell they were as apt to throw a simple swing pass to a back into the turf short. Cannons that couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.

JW has that arm strength combined with accuracy when he is on his game.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    ……….Mariota. ……..next

  10. tdtb2015 Says:

    Awesome!!!!

Now go shred his defense Winston!

    Is it Sunday yet????????

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. DallasBuc Says:

Isn’t that what everyone does in these pregame interviews? This is grain of salt stuff. Trust that Lebeau is treating Winston as a rookie in his game plans and meeting rooms.
    Pretending is fun!

  12. DB55 Says:

If Lovie was smart he’d make jw3 the savior throw screens and 8 yard slants like Mariota will do. The only way Mariota throws a pass past 10 yards from the Los is if his guy is open by 5 yards or more. The Titans are going to try to run the ball down our throats.

I have a feeling that jw3 will be asked to make impossible throws on 3&17. 20 yards in the air into double coverage. Jaboo will succeed dispite mr smith, I garuntee.

  13. tdtb2015 Says:

@Joe- How does Ten. o-line and d-line compare to Cincinnati’s?

  14. tdtb2015 Says:

Brindza may be the x-factor on this game.

    Thank you Licht!

  15. DallasBuc Says:

DB55- those frequent 3&17s will be a direct result of that miserable oline that Incompetent Lovie Smith and his lapdog GM has birthed for this team. It’s almost as if they are trying to make us worse!

  16. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

I told you guys Winston was wayyyyyy better than Mariota

  17. nate_tweetz Says:

Winston would look good throwing to Tyrelle Pryor. Pick him up!

  18. DB55 Says:

    Dallas

Lovie at his PC talking about 11-5. Let’s see it coach. We are ready!

  19. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Are you serious once again DumbestBuc???? How many times do people have to point to your mentally challenged self that last year he got what were thought to be good players it’s not his fault they didn’t work out, then he drafted not one but TWO linemen in the 2ND round this year. You sit up here with your cow flop once again calling incompetent a coach who got a team to the superbowl who is without a doubt in the professional football circles considered a VERY INTELLIGENT MAN. You are a moron among morons. If anybody is incompetent it is you! I mean I understand you weren’t blessed with a fully functioning brain or a face even a mother couldn’t love but wahdahdang fool can you come up with something new? You are worse than a broken record.

  20. Matt Says:

regardless not much too say here we got two rookie former heisman QBs battling it out for the W on Sunday nothing is gonna be estatic for both of these guys I don’t think. Regardless of the two rookie QBs though TB has the best overall team and that’s what wins game in this league . Having the best team! It’s a team sport 1 individual player rarely wins any game for any team.

  21. Dave Says:

I must remember to not look at the score !!!
Going to Van Halen so I’m recording the game!!

  22. Brion Says:

I would lower expectations too If I my job evaluation rested on the performance of the Titans defense

  23. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    But CRAB LEGS!!!!

    BB GUN FIGHT!!!!!

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    But PROTESTERS!!!!

    Women’s activist groups!!!!

  25. 911bucs Says:

Eddie acts like a prima donna now

  26. Cannuckbuc Says:

    PROTECT HIM…and he will Deliver!

  27. DallasBuc Says:

Davidlittleman- “…he got what were thought to be good players it’s not his fault they didn’t work out.” And I am the moron? Isn’t it kinda his job to acquire good football players especially when you back up the Brinks truck for them? You sir are a funny fella!
Name calling on a sports site to commentors you don’t know just because you disagree with them can objectively be considered unintelligent but what do I know, I’m supposedly the moron!!!
I’m glad you think so highly of a guy that took a 4-12 football team and proudly led it to 2-14 behind a proud effort of supreme competence. Must be how the non-morons think!

  28. Pawel Says:

But Doug Martin will win this game for us, UNLESS LOVIES DECIDES TO REPLACE HIM WITH BOBBY RAINEY OR MIKE JAMES.

  29. BrianBucs Says:

Luckily for the Bucs and Jameis, LeBeau doesn’t have many horses on that Titan’s defense. Beating the Titans is no great accomplishment so some early season momentum will be great

  30. OneLove Says:

Hey what a coincidence!! That’s the same face DallasBuc makes when I put my WANG in his mouth!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “I’m gonna make you love me! Who’s your Daddy!?!?!”

  31. BucFanForever Says:

If Jameis is half as good this season as that makes him sound, he’ll be eating pineapple.

  32. Bucnut2 Says:

Nothing more than mandatory coach speak. Let’s see what Sunday brings. I’m not a hater just someone not sold on JW

  33. vegabuc Says:

High praise from a future hall of famer. Coming from Dick LeBeau that should get all Bucs fans some encouragement about Jameis future. Now let’s do this Shiiiiii dawg

  34. Joe Says:

High praise from a future hall of famer.

LeBeau was inducted into Canton a few years ago.

  35. Dave Says:

    911buc

I know. That’s because he is old and sober now LOL
They don’t even sound great anymore but.. One more time for old times sake
VH and a Bucs opening win!

  36. Delson Says:

I see Lebeau strokin jameis’ rookie ego. Lebeau knows his defense will show up and capitalize on the rookie’s mistakes especially with his HOF blitz packages. So I hope Jameis sees thru these words and makes great decisions. I hope the whole inefficient offense during preseason was planned cuz it was horrible. Take this league by storm TB

  37. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Joe is hyping a DC in LeBeau that the Steelers allowed to walk. The league had largely figured out his tackle-the-catch philosophy on defense and his effectiveness was drastically reduced with his last year in Pittsburgh (2014) only ranking 27th in the league against the pass. Add to this the Titans defense last year being ranked 29th overall, 27th in yards allowed, 31st in 1st downs allowed, 29th in turnovers created, 31st in rushing yards allowed, and 28th in rushing TD’s allowed, and you’ll excuse me if I’m not buying the hype. This defense can be scored on, ran on, and LeBeau is not the wizard he once was because teams have looked behind the curtain and discovered he’s just a guy after all.

  38. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Search the words “Dick LeBeau no quick fix for Titans” and read the article by the Tennessean. A pro-Titans newspaper saying these things, by the way. LeBeau doesn’t scare me as a fan and I’m sure Dirk Koetter is sleeping like a baby.

  39. Delson Says:

So thats why pittsburgh looked so horrible against the pats.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

I always love reading comments that state opinions so matter a factly as if you’ve single handily coached and gm’d your own successful NFL franchises.

    Bwahahaha too funny.

  41. Skyline Crew Says:

Some of you didn’t watch preseason. Screen passes and slants? Keep hating and you’ll get burned. I hope our Bucs aren’t thinking that way, otherwise it’ll be a long day.

  42. UnicornWithRainbowsOutHisArse Says:

Just had the old creamsicle orange Brooks jersey cleaned, and it’s gleaming in the light of my closet! Got the fridge stocked with beer (hopefully I can save some for Sunday), got the hot dogs defrosting, and the steaks will be marinating tomorrow night. Oh yeah…it’s Bucs Sunday in the Unicorn house!!!
