Lovie Smith smiled a lot when Tim Jennings was one of his starting cornerbacks

When Joe asked Lovie Smith about Tim Jennings yesterday, it initially seemed like the coach wasn’t sure who Joe was referencing.

Today, Tim Jennings is visiting the Bucs, per the team’s website.

Jennings, 31, is a former star of Lovie’s defense in Chicago. He had nine interceptions in 2012. Nine!

Jennings made the Pro Bowl following the 2012 and 2013 seasons, but he had a bad year (zero picks) in 2014 and was cut by the Bears last week. He also had minor knee surgery in February.

Lovie gave his stock answer yesterday on Jennings — that the Bucs are interested in all players that might be able to help the football team.

Joe’s not sure why Jennings would be interested in coming here, unless he’s out of options. Joe can’t see a scenario that knocks Alterraun Verner and Johnthan Banks out of a starting gig, and one would think Jennings expects to be a starter. He’s only missed six starts in the past five seasons.

But, of course, Joe would love to see the Bucs add depth with a guy like Jennings. They have the cap room, and it would be quite a score at a reasonable price.

    We need quality depth everywhere except…RB, QB, TE, DT, LB so….by all means take a look……

  2. Joehelldeloxley Says:

    Is it possible to change the name of the Bucks as Bears Bin trash ?

  3. OneLove Says:

    YES, we could use his experience and depth…. ESPECIALLY AFTER WATCHING JONATHAN BANKS GET SMASHED ON SATURDAY!!!!

    “It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith “Now watch me whiiiiip!!! Now watch me Nae Nae!!!!”

  4. Stanglassman Says:

    I’d never put it past Lovie to start someone over Banks. Banks did have one bad play last week, just the excuse he was waiting for.

  5. Mike Says:

    Better than Jenkins. Great depth!

  6. DamnImFameis Says:

    @Joehelldeloxley – Bucks? Really? This ain’t Milwaukee dude…

    Can he play O-line?

    Jennings will be a good temporary fix in the middle.

    @OneLove
    Not sure if you were around then, but Ronde Barber didn’t so well his first few years in the league either.

    In fact, Banks has been in the league for two complete seasons. Comparing that to Barbers first two seasons, and Banks has 5 more picks.

    To be fair, Ronde barely played in his first season, But even if you include his 3rd season against Banks 2 seasons, Banks still had 3 more picks.

    That isn’t to say that Banks is better than Barber. He isn’t.

    I just wanted to illustrate that there is nothing to be alarmed with where Banks is concerned. Ronde didn’t explode until his 5th season. I think Banks will do it sooner, barring injury.

    But you are right. Right now he hasn’t been great. The only problem is, he won’t become great without the playing time.

    @Joe…with so many former Bears signing all the time you might have to start putting the from “all together now the Chicago Bears” in your articles.

    Per Rotoworld:

    Free agent CB Tim Jennings left his meeting with the Buccaneers without a contract.
    This is somewhat of a surprise considering how much sense a reunion with ex-coach Lovie Smith makes, but it does not mean a potential deal is dead. Jennings will find a new home in the very near future, and it would be surprising if it were not Tampa.

    Can he play OL ?

  14. tdtb2015 Says:

    Keep them coming AC/DC Licht!

    p.s. Don’t forget about our o-line…

  15. BucIt941 Says:

    Come on Joe! You already know why! Knowing how bad Lovie wants to replace Banks (which confuses me just as much as you) he probably told Jennings he would have a legitimate shot as a starter if he came here!

    Good Ol’ Loyal Lovie always bringing in his retreades and hoping for the best.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    My guess is Jennings was told he would not be listed as a starter and has to think about it…gauge the market.

  17. OneLove Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai

    To be fair, Tim Jennings was struggling in Chicago. He was getting beat worse than Jonathan Banks did this past saturday and Banks made Josh McCown look like a PRO BOWLER for StPete’s SAKE!!!!

    “It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith “Now watch me whiiip! Now watch me Nae Nae!”

  18. James Says:

    FIX THE OLINE!!! Shouldnt have even drafted a QB if you didnt plan to fix the oline. Marpet looks like a turn style at Disney World and Smith is hurt. Not to mention the rest of the oline, I try to be optimistic about the upcoming season but its hard with I-75 running through the oline.

  19. The original "Kevin" Says:

    Its the zone defense. If josh mccown can pick out the weak spots whats drew and matt ryan gonna do???

    If it were my way we would have big physical corners playing man coverage. BUCK this zone defense….without 4 studs up front we will get torched every sunsay. At least in man coverage Its one on one. There are no excuses….oh the saftey blew it….no it was the corners fault. Looks like Lovie is tanking again for that number 1 pick edge rusher.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @James

    It’ll take time for the new oline guys to settle in. Probably by week six or so. In the meantime, they can improve on run blocking sooner.

    Still a weakness at center, but unless they switch EDS and MArpet, that won’t be fixed this year.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @The original “Kevin”

    What you suggest sure sounds pretty. How would it effect penalties though under the new rules?

  22. Dave Pear Says:

    We are now known as the Tampa Bay BuccaBears.

  23. MadMax Says:

    Welcome aboard Tim! Now tear it up for us Brother!
