Chucky has words for Dirk Koetter

Chucky, the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl head coach, gushed and gushed over Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota during an interview on WDAE-AM 620 this morning.

Chucky sees him as a do-it-all quarterback.

As for Tampa Bay, Chucky is very nervous about the offensive line and whether the Bucs can protect Jameis Winston and establish a running game, which will help Jameis.

Chucky says Dirk Koetter might have to dial back any lofty dreams for Sunday.

“Sometimes you have to check your ego at the door as a play caller,” Chucky said. “You know, you go in with all these passing ideas, all the different route concepts you want to use. Sometimes you have to put some tight ends on the field. Help your tackles. Be committed to running the football. Use the clock. Try to stay out of those third-down-and-long situations, where guys like Dick LeBeau, the defensive coordinator of the Titans and all [his] blitz packages come into play.

“Sometimes you just got to possess the ball and play to your strengths, and I think that includes Doug Martin for the Buccaneers, based on what I’ve seen.”

Shaun King haters might want to note Chucky and he are on the same page when it comes to the Bucs’ approach Sunday against the Titans.

Don’ get me wrong, I’ll be forever grateful for Gruden’s Super Bowl victory. But I’ve never seen a head coach with a bigger ego problem. I find it hard to heed the advice from someone who can’t heed his own advice.

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I hope the operative word here is sometimes. I understand that for at least the first half of the season we are doomed to watch Gruden/Dungy/Lovieball and we’re not going to get the full range of Koetter or JW’s ability.

Our two rookie OL scream run the ball! Our RB has recovered his form and that adds to the clarion call. Our rookie QB needs to be protected..I know run the ball!

Get used to three and outs and hoping the D hangs on and Brindza can steal a game or two for us. I just want to get through the first 4 games 2-2. That’s doable but will require a boring effort.

I don’t think we see the real JW until the second half of the season.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

LargoSamIM…it’s a good thing you don’t have to heed Gruden’s advice, because he’s not talking about you. I’m also pretty confident he knows he has a huge ego and when to check it.

  4. Simpleasthat Says:

Shawn King haters? there was never really much to like…but hate is a strong word.

  5. DB55 Says:

I think chucky is right. I’m confident the Titans plans to run the ball often with Shankey and West. Mariota will throw short slant routes or scramble. We should do the same.

  6. OneLove Says:

    @StPeteBucsFan

I agree… What I want to see is a DAD GUM PERFECTLY EXECUTED SCREEN PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If we run one of those and beat the blitz then i’m going to run on the field(streak) and B!TCH SLAP Dick Lebau!!!

“It’s as simple as that” – Lovie Smith aka “She’s a BRICK HOUSE!”

  7. Buc since '74 Says:

Most of you already know this so please excuse the repetition, but this really made me confident in Koetter: Atlanta had an absolute crap line last year due to injury to everyone. By the bye week the line was made up of grocery baggers. ATL averaged like 325 yards per game before the bye, and 380 yards per game AFTER the bye!! Now that is an OC! Let’s make it happen Koetter!!

  8. Ray Rice Says:

“Sometimes you have to check your ego at the door as a play caller.”……..

LMFAO. @JOE, are you sure Chucky’s head didn’t swell after making that statement?

  9. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Anybody else notice that the Pats were starting two rookies on the OL last night and protected extremely well?

Being a rookie is no excuse on the OL…My expectations for this group and their ability to protect Jameis is actually rising the more I think about it

  10. Nick3 Says:

I think hes lamenting the Giants playoff game at home where we took the opening kickoff and with Earnest Graham drove right down for a score. The Giants couldnt stop us. Then Gruden decided that he would depend of gimpy Garcia and his passing schemes for the rest of the game. Wrong answer. Of all Buc opportunities thats the one I think we gave away. We had them in their own game and we went to the passing game and it sealed our fate. Check your ego at the door and that day Chucky didnt and it killed us.

  11. JMN Says:

If anybody can evaluate QB’s it is Chucky (sarcasm). The 2 QB’s he drafted during his tenure in Tampa went on to do great things…oh wait.

  12. JMN Says:

And does anybody think Chucky has an agenda to be against Winston? Considering his employer, the most agenda based network ever, was snubbed by Winston on draft day.

  13. drdneast Says:

How true JMN. Passed on Arron Rogers for the often injured Cadillac Williams. StPeteBucsFan, you should know by now Lovie doesn’t get involved much in the offense as was evidencedlast year.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

drdneast…23 other teams passed on Rodgers too.

  15. Nick3 Says:

Hey stop slamming Chuckys QBs!!! Gradkowski is a monster on the field 🙂

  16. Soggy Says:

Chucky can have is opinion just like everybody here, he took and won us the SB.. The football Gods called and said if the bucs ever want to win the SB again we have to kiss them where they fart..

  17. unbelievable Says:

    @Creamsicle,

    I certainly did notice that!

Now I’m sure it helps that they have 2 extremely experienced (possibly pro-bowl) tackles on each end, as well as one of the best QBs in the league calling commands. But seeing that does give me some hope. Yep, that dreaded word… hope.

  18. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @drdneast

LOL…I think you meant to address that to Dallas, Tmax, and Realist.

I don’t think Lovie will be calling plays. But I do think he’ll let Koetter know what he expects to happen.

Again I’m one of the few Lovie supporters here. In fact I think once the OL proves itsself ready and JW has grown Lovie will pull off the restrictions and let Koetter go after it. And to be honest as far as I know he may already have let Koetter have more input that the animosity amigos would have us believe.

IMHO if Lovie is a good coach he will have met with Koetter at minimum and perhaps Frazier and received their input as to what type gameplan they intend to implement.

So Let me get his right….

We Bash the Face Of the Franchise (GMC)

    &

The Best Coach In Buccaneer History (Gru)

    All in one day!!! (SMFH)

Ok, so at least we know – that we’ve finally hit rock bottom. There’s nowhere to go but up from here. (geesh)

  20. Tnew Says:

Don’t forget Gruden’s affinity for the mobile quarterback. He tried to replace Brad Johnson with Rob Johnson. Loved Josh Johnson and Bruce Gradkowski. Really didn’t enjoy Chris Simms. Finally got his guy with Jeff Garcia. Its what fits his eye. He doesn’t like to put a guy in the gun. He’s gonna prefer Mariotta over Winston. But if he were our coach neither would be our qb as he really doesn’t like rookies (and I argue, we wouldn’t be picking first)

  21. JMN Says:

“The Best Coach In Buccaneer History (Gru)”

That is a bit of a stretch. Many Bucs fans are very appreciative of Gruden for the Super Bowl victory. I am one of those fans and will always respect Gruden for that. IMO Dungy was the best coach this franchise ever had who built the team that made it to the Super Bowl. All Gruden did was add a couple of key pieces and his playbook. Once Gruden’s mark was made on the team in the years following the Super Bowl victory, it was very much a let down.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    JMN

Winningest Coach (all-time): Jon Gruden – 57 wins
Most Division Championships: Jon Gruden – 3

I feel like I’ve said this a billion times since 2003.

Most of the players – that were part of our great. Were already here – thanks to Sam Wyche. Lets also not forget, that it was under Coach Sam Wyche- that we finally (7-9) after 10 straight years of sub 7 win seasons.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Most of the players – that were part of our Great Defense. Were already here

  24. Hawk Says:

    @ LUVMYBUCS
And Wyche did it under Culverhouse.

  25. Eric Says:

Yeah Chucky blew that playoff game.

BTW, what exactly is a playoff game?

Perhaps we can consult the geniuses that ran the man out of town.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Hawk

    Exaaactly

  27. tj Says:

so if its dungys team that won the sb, was it grudens team that lost?

  28. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Stop with that “Dungy’s team” BS

Would Keenan McCardell have come to TB if Dungy was the HC and Shula the OC? Roman Oben? Michael Pittman? Ken Dilger? All Gruden guys and all major contributors to the Super Bowl run

Stop. That was Gruden’s team, plain and simple

  29. OAR Says:

    Tnew
Gruden didn’t try to replace Brad Johnson with Rob Johnson. Rob was brought in because Shaun King was our back-up (Shaun wasn’t first or second string material, even Dungy dropped him to second string).
He went and met with Rodgers for a private workout (even brought Jerry Rice to catch) and his mechanics were horrible. Rodgers did sit 3 years right? We didn’t have that long to wait.
Lost high round picks in trade to get Gruden left him drafting late rnd QBs. Hard to find a franchise QB there. Gradkowski and Johnson were 3rd and 4th rnd picks.
He settled on Garcia. Nobody remembers the Jake Plummer(Shannahan ruined that guy) trade or the fact he wanted to try and get Farve.

    JMN
How many Super Bowls did Dungy win with his “team”? BTW Gruden brought in 27 players more than half the roster. He was smart enough to know don’t mess with the defense. Sounds like his team to me.

  30. Hawk Says:

I agree with CreamsicleBananaHammock. Stop with the “Gruden won with Dungy’s Team”. It just makes it look that much worse for Dungy. ‘His’ team got worse EVERY year after the ’99 season. His players lost faith that he could take them to the top. Gruden was brought in to stop the bleeding… and did. Gruden’s biggest handicap was that the Glazers gave up FOUR first and second round picks, leaving Gruden/Allen with the loss of four perennially starters over the next 5-7 years. No wonder they loaded up on FAs.

  31. Brent Says:

Talk dungy all you want, no gruden no ring. In fact under dungys watche we weren’t even a playoff team any longer. Credit dungy for turning franchise around. So I trust gruden a opinion here. We all know ol is weak.

  32. OAR Says:

Exactly! Actually, Dungy missed out on having several SB rings. Because, as good as that 2002 defense was, the 1999 – 2001 defenses were better and should have had rings to justify their play!

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

The Best Coach In Buccaneer History

If you guys are talking the best Buccaneer coach in our history then I can accept your arguments about Chucky but Dungy is right there. He did something truly difficult…turn around a perienniel losing franchise. That’s really really hard. It’s what we expect from Lovie.

Gruden didn’t do squat after the players he inherited grew old and he tried to replace them. He had a horrible eye for talent and was far too prejudiced towards veterans even when they were clearly over the hill.

However somebody brought up Sam Wyche. YES!! He may not be the Buc’s best coach but he was the best coach to walk the Bucs sideline if you look at his entire body of work. Like Dungy he turned around a horrid Bengals franchise and took them to the SB.

He was the QB coach for Joe Montana and worked with Bill Walsh in creating the WC offense. He developed Boomer Esiaison and as pointed out he brought many of the players to Tampa that won the SB. Do we believe St. Tony would have selected Sapp after the weed news?

  34. White Tiger Says:

Why would anyone think our offensive line is going to get better by the end of the season?

If you can’t protect your dropback QB, in a dropback offense, then there aren’t going too many games where you’ll witness kid fameis just “sling it”…

You won’t see the offense you wanted for at least another season.
