WRs Need Help

July 30th, 2015
Studs.

Studs.

Yes, Joe is of the mind that arguably the best one-two punch of NFL receivers is Godzilla Evans and Vincent Jackson. If there are one-two punches better than the Bucs’ duo, the list is damn short.

Sometimes, it takes number-crunching to shed light upon things and the nerds over at Pro Football Focus have finger blisters from the wear and tear of playing with Excel spreadsheets. To wit, Pro Football Focus believes no tandem of receivers was more important to an NFL squad.

@PFF No team leaned more on their WRs than the Buccaneers, who caught 85.7% of the teams passing TDs.

And this was with garbage for a No. 1 quarterback and an offensive line that reminded folks of a cattle stampede. Imagine what Evans and Jackson can do with just a modicum of blocking and having “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, tossing passes?

At least when it comes to the two studs at wide receiver, Bucs fans shouldn’t lose a wink of sleep.

This also tells Joe that Evans and Jackson got no help. Imagine if offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter can get reliable folks out of the backfield to be passing targets, and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to stay out of the hot tub.

Savage Mike & Airforce Jackson + The Messiah+ Koetter Offense= FUK THE NFC SOUTH!

Whowuddathunkit, the Bucs once a feared defense now potentially sporting a feared offense.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

There are question marks because of rookies at QB and on the OL. But on paper – with Winston behind center and Dirk Koetter calling the plays – and with the weapons of Evans, Vjax, ASJ, Tim Wright and Martin/Sims/Rainey out of the backfield – this offense appears to be set to bust out with explosive plays and points.

We are all in wait and see mode regarding this year’s Buccaneers – especially after last year. But my early take is that this is likely to be a MUCH better team than what was fielded last year.

  5. Señor Mofo Says:

Jameis has a long stride in his throwing motion (baseball anyone?) and a slow release. He needs pocket space, and he might not get that from our o-line.

Koetter can work magic if the QB can throw out of a three-step drop, but Jameis isn’t designed that way. Five-step drop, maybe.

Jameis will need a lot of mechanical improvement to be optimally effective in a Dirk Koetter offense. But Jameis can read a defense, and put the ball where receivers can catch it in stride, so there’s no reason we can’t win in the mean time.

    GO BUCS

YES! This will also tell us a lot about Lovie. If he doesn’t allow Koetter to utilize these weapons and demands the damn two runs on 1st and 2nd with the obligatory desperate 3rd down prayer then I’ll join Dallas and tmax and start drinking the Lovie haterade.

I’m giving Lovie the benefit of the doubt until we see how all this plays out. I don’t want us to just keep up with the chains and downs…unlike last year….I want us to be very aggressive and stay ahead.

2nd down and 3 or 4 makes everybody on the offense look better…from the OL to the QB to the RB’s. I’m sooooo over 3rd and long!

In his NFL career, Dirk Koetter has been the OC for two defensive-minded head coaches. And they both gave him carte blanche on offense.

He would not have taken this job if Lovie didn’t grant him that same privilege.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Hmmmm preseason is right around the corner in just a little over 2 weeks.

With all this rain lately, I hope the Bucs come to their senses and build a damn indoor practice facility or the rest of the NFL has a jump on us in that category. They practice while we get rained out..

    Senior Mofo-

What are you watching, Jameis’s freshman year tape? He tightened up his throwing motion twice in the last two years. Once between his freshman and sophomore year and again while working with Whitfield prior to the the combine. His motion is not B-rady, Romo fast but it’s far from Leftwitch.

  11. LakelandBuc Says:

Louis Murphy and Kenny Bell should contribute, but the key player is ASJ.

Its all water under the bridge now, because what’s done cannot be undone. But the thought of the following line Up drove me madd before the draft.

    • 13-Mike Evans 21 (6-5 || 231)
    • 83-Vincent Jackson 32 (6-5 || 230)
    • 15-Dorial Green-Beckham 22 (6-5 || 237)

Don’t get me wrong, I know we needed I left tackle, and Donovan Smith is good prospect. I just didn’t see him competing for a starting LT job day One.

Maybe a season or two at LG. Then after being groomed for the position, slide over…..but Day One –Nah.

Dorial Green-Beckham size and speed would’ve been a nightmare match up, for ANY third corner.

It would’ve rivaled some of the best tandems ever.

    (Examples)
    • Cris Carter | Randy Moss | Jake Reed
    • Drew Hill | Haywood Jeffires | Ernest Givins
    • Herman Moore | Brett Perriman | Johnny Morton
    • Mark Duper | Mark Clayton | Nat Moore

So I just thought he would be the obvious choice at #34. But it was not to be

So hopefully Warhop/Mankins can get the young guys ready. Lord knows Jameis/Glennon, is gonna need it.

That would have been deadly. To piggy off your hypothetical draft. Try to picture this.

    1st Rd: Jameis Winston
    2nd Rd: DGB
    2nd Rd: Donovan Smith
    4th rd: Kwon Alexander
    5th rd: Kenny Bell
    6th rd: Kaelin Clay
    7th rd: La’el Collins

I would have Collins battle out for LT and Smith battle it out for RG and then move him to LG next to Collins when Mankins is done playing. Looking at that would have been killer. There’s a chance the team could of still had Iosefa after.

Now I would consider the next year of picking up Braxton Miller who recently decided to transition to WR and open up a whole new can of worms with a WR convert from QB. This team could have had the most lethal offense for years to come! That would be scary.

We should trade Mike Evans to New England for a 6th round pick so he can win a Super Bowl… That would help him…

Spare me the drama. I am well aware of Jameis’ mechanical flaws, and I am also well aware of his commitment to his game and his ability to improve.

He will never have the technical proficiency, mechanically, of someone like Andrew Luck or Marcus Mariota.

But the NFL isn’t a textbook QB skills competition. Jameis has the smarts and will to win, and he will win games in this league. A lot of them.

Just because I recognize the flaws in Jameis’ game doesn’t make me any less enthusiastic about him being our QB. He’s already the best QB we’ve had in 39 years, and he hasn’t even taken his first NFL snap.

  24. JabooBuc Says:

LUVMYBUCs/SoCoBuc: you guys do understand that DGB is an absolute head case and a huge gamble for a team that had other major holes to fill. Also, Collins had already told the NFL that if he wasn’t drafted in the 1st 2 rounds he would sit out the year. Thus the reason a 1st round talent was not drafted by anyone.

  25. SoCoBuc Says:

JabooBuc. Both statements you made are true. But based on talent alone both would be awesome. If I’m not mistaken, Collins Agent said that was a bluff and that he would’ve signed with whoever drafted him. I still think the Bucs had a good draft. It’s just fun looking at different scenarios.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

I thought Collins was denied his petition into the 2016 draft after the 2015 draft concluded. I don’t believe it had anything to do with his agent bluffing.

    ————————————————————————————–

Yes, the Bucs are smart enough to give him a “real look”. He’s here for a reason.

The fact is that Hall, Donteea Dye, and Adam Humphries are fighting for that last roster spot in the WR group.

They are all virtual clones in terms of size and speed. So, whoever shows the best route-running ability and the best hands wins. If that guy is Hall, then so be it.

  29. Owlykat Says:

The Bucs are running 4 Verticals as an Offensive weapon which will feature Evans and Jackson as the outside WRs and there will be two inside receivers who need to be burners and they will be Murphy and Bell. When the OL gives Winston time the two safeties have to pick their poison leaving two other receivers open and Winston is accurate with his deep pass. We have the WRs to make it work and when they get tired we will have four TEs who can all play.
The catch is this offense leaves only six blockers including the running back on pass plays. Our problem is all of our top three backs are not solid blockers, but Dominique Brown is, has great soft hands for outlet passes, plus is big and tough and can open his own holes–We need him to start; especially when our OL is bonding at the start of the season. I also think you will eventually see Rookie Smith at RT and Marpet at Center. Dotson will be needed to play LT and Pamphile will need to step up at RT. EDS will be the key backup for Center and Guard along with Edwards as the other Guard backup. The talent is here now but Koetter will need to develop it. Our Defense will be a top ten Defense.

  30. Danati74 Says:

WR should be the least of our worries. All this wishful thinking of grabbing another WR in the 2nd is beynd me. If we went QB, of course we need OL. We got K. Bell in the 5th, which he has looked really good so far. We didnt get DGB, we got OL. We need blockers for our new QB and running game. Did you forget how bad that looked last year? Jeez. We got 2 other recievers with KR ability…another need. Cant win them all.

  31. Fsuking Says:

Senor Mofo- You said Jameis has mechanical flaws and a slow release. That is the most foolish and moronic statement I have ever heard in my life. Jameis moves like Jameis, he throws like Jameis. His release has evolved into a quick, triggerlike version of the unique style we saw in his freshman year, essentially a rifled cannon with a shorter wick. It’s no Rodger’s release (which is hands down the NFL’s finnest) but you know who else didn’t throw like that as a rookie? Rodgers. I would love for you to rip out the stopwatch during camp and see for yourself. Man you are an idiot!
