Mike Glennon No. 5

July 7th, 2015
Top backup.

Top backup.

The season of rankings continues as we lumber toward the beginning of training camp. The first open practice is Aug. 1. Joe can almost smell the cheerleaders’ sweat (it’s sort of a fruity scent, if you must know).

There have been rankings for this quarterback, that running back, this defensive end, that defensive tackle. Just about every ranking one can think of, short of best puke dispensers. Now comes best backup quarterback situations. Here, Sean Wagner-McGough of CBS Sports finds that the quarterback of the past and the quarterback of the future and maybe the quarterback of the present, Mike Glennon, is in the fifth-best situation with the Bucs.

5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Mike Glennon

Speaking of Josh McCown, why Lovie Smith decided to name McCown his opening day starter last season instead of Mike Glennon is something I’ll never understand. I mean, I guess I know why Smith chose McCown. It’s because McCown played like Peyton Manning for a handful of games in 2013 and it’s because Smith just couldn’t resist the temptation of potentially stumbling upon the next Rich Gannon — if you had Smith’s history with awful quarterbacks, you probably wouldn’t have been able to resist either.

Anyways, Glennon is often forgotten by most, especially now that No. 1 pick Jameis Winston is in Tampa Bay, and he’s studying the playbook at Drake concerts, and he’s staying at the team’s facilities until the coaches are pretty much like: Hey, Jameis! Go home!

But it’s strange that Glennon is overlooked, because he’s actually been a fairly decent player in the league. He might even be good enough to start on a few teams. (Hey, Cleveland, take it from Lovie Smith. Josh McCown might be able to “spin it” in practice, but he’s not Peyton Manning.)

Provided “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, can stay upright and in one piece behind a shaky offensive line, Joe is certain the Bucs will peddle Glennon at some point. A team that is coming off a two-win season and that has holes up and down the lineup and scant depth simply doesn’t have room for the luxury of a solid backup quarterback. Not when said player could bring back needs draft picks.

The goal is for Glennon to never see the field. Exactly how is a guy with marketable talent helping the team by watching the game from the sidelines week after week?

Besides, in the NFL, if your starting quarterback goes down, you are screwed (unless the backup is truly the franchise quarterback of the future).

I hope the Bucs don’t part with Glennon. This team needs two capable QB’s. MG’s value is likely higher than who he might be replaced by in whatever scenario he would leave the team. I would think Koetter would be at the top of the list making that decision. Glennon has been pigeonholed as backup material at best, could Koetter think different?

Trading him makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. This team would get a 3rd AT BEST for Glennon and I think that’s really stretching it. 5th is way more likely.

Joe, are you comfortable with a Mike Kafka or Dan Orlovsky kind of guy backing up Jameis? Because I know I’d take Glennon over both of those every day of the week, and it would be worth the 4th round pick we might get for MG to have an above avg backup on the roster

And then guess what we have to use a draft pick on? A quarterback. A quarterback that would be making roughly the same amount of money as Glennon with zero gameday experience.

Mike Glennon needs to embrace his role as a career backup and the Bucs should embrace him as Jameis’ backup until something better comes along.

  3. bucs4lyfe Says:

“This team needs two capable QB’s.” HAHAHAHAHA embarrassing how far bucs fans have fallen. we have the only fans in the league that would say something that ridiculous after drafting a qb first overall. every position in the league has drop off when the starter goes down some how some of us have become as weak as the franchise. if lovie had said that we’d be calling for his head. you should be embarrassed my friend shame on you, no one cares about the backup except those with no confidence in the starter and if you expect Winston to go out there day one and be aaron Rodgers or go out day one and be josh mccown then your delusional. we knew glennon wasn’t a franchise qb

  4. Joe Says:

Yes, provided Glennon fetches a starter in return (draft). If Glennon can bring back a starter, it’s sort of irresponsible not to deal him when you are 2-14. Sort of like having a BMW and a Honda Civic when you can’t pay your mortgage.

Doesn’t matter if you are the Belicheats or the Bucs, if your starting quarterback goes down, you are screwed.

  5. Joe Says:

No team — especially a 2-14 team — needs two capable quarterbacks unless one is a “slash” type and you have special packages for him.

For some reason, Joe is not reminded of Kordell Stewart when he thinks of Mike Glennon.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Trade Glennon when the time is right….could be this season or next….but some team will need him and will give us at least a 3rd round pick.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m happy the anti Glennon views aren’t calling the shots for the Bucs.

  8. NaplesBucFan Says:

So, to summarize – we need depth, but not at QB, which is the most important position. So we should trade away a good player for a draft pick, which is always a risk.

Good thinking! It’s not like a backup QB ever helped win a division title.. by beating us twice..

  9. Mo_Downs Says:

Glennon may start the season opener against the Titans because their defense is going to blitz the Bucs on every down. Glennon has the experience to react and not create turnovers.

I think trading Glennon would be a mistake. FTR, I was a McCown fan…preseason. The Steelers game convinced me that Glennon was capable of being productive. But, the rest of the season convinced me that he wasn’t starter material.

  10. Harry Says:

“…I hope the Bucs don’t part with Glennon. This team needs two capable QB’s…”

The Bucs have other teams cast offs and backups starting at multiple positions, such as both safety positions, MLB, etc. so how does it not make sense to trade MG8, who will sit on the bench this season, if we can get a quality starter at one of these needy positions? I would be thrilled with getting a 3rd rd pick or higher for Glennon

  11. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Doesn’t matter if you are the Belicheats or the Bucs, if your starting quarterback goes down, you are screwed.

I agree with that up to a point.

Are the Patriots in the same boat with Garropolo at QB the first 4 games as they would be with Kafka or Orlovsky?

I can definitely see your argument, that a backup QB is a luxury for a 2-14 team, but if the Bucs do make improvement….let’s say they’re at 4-4 at the halfway point and Dog forbid, Jameis goes down….does Mike Glennon really mean the end of a playoff push? I can say with 100% certainty that a Curtis Painter type backup would absolutely be the end of the season, but Glennon would give us a chance

  12. Joe Says:

So, to summarize – we need depth, but not at QB, which is the most important position. So we should trade away a good player for a draft pick, which is always a risk.

How is Glennon helping the team by watching the game on the sidelines?

If you are scared of the draft, trade all the picks.

  13. Bucnjim Says:

Teams will not give up a high pick unless they want him to compete for a starting position. If this is the case then the only value I would see is a trade for a proven player for depth. 3rd 4th & 5th rounders have little chance to be quality players.

  14. NaplesBucFan Says:

How is a pick in next year’s draft going to help us this season?

It is not a matter of being scared of the draft, just a simple risk assessment. A known good player is better than an unknown risk. If we could manage to trade for a starter, that would be different. But I don’t see us getting a starting DE or OL, which are our biggest needs.

FTR, I think Winston had the talent, drive and leadership skills to be a great QB. I just don’t want to trade away a good backup QB for peanuts. We may need him, given our questionable OL. I hope not, but you can’t buy insurance after something bad happens.

Besides, competition will help make Winston better. He’s said as much

  15. tmaxcon Says:

the only way glennon sees the field is if Jameis is injured. sorry but 8 does not have the skill set nor the personality to compete with Jameis on ANY level… Simple as that…

It only makes sense to keep Glennon if this team was close to the playoffs which it is NOT…. The bus are double digit players and a legit head coach away from competing for anything other than the basement.

  16. pete Says:

If the offensive offensive line improves Jameis may not get hurt.
If the offensive offensive line improves Glennon can be effective.
If the offensive offensive line improves the running game will be better.
I am praying for the 2 2014 and the 2 2015 Oline draftees and for improved coaching.
Better Offensive line = Better Buccaneers team!

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

No one will trade for him if they know he’ll be a free agent next year. Better to suffer with a bad QB and get a good pick, then sign him.

  18. BUCSLEGENDS Says:

WOW just WOW, Talk to the Cardinals about the need for a quality back up quarterback. GO BUCS !!!!!!!

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    NaplesBucFan Says
“How is a pick in next year’s draft going to help us this season?”

A good question, and it illustrates the problem with our team. Everyone keeps wanting a quick fix…and that doesn’t happen. You can talk about teams that turn it around in a season all you want, but those teams have more talent in place and only needed a couple peaces.

Elite teams have long term plans. They don’t function on a year to year basis. They supplement their long term plan annually.

So getting a good pick in a future draft IS important. Unfortunately, Glennon can’t bring us a good pick.

  20. Couch Fan Says:

Glennon’s value > the pick he would bring in return
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, 1st/2nd or it’s not worth it. Glennon is a very capable QB and is the best QB on the team until Winston proves otherwise. Getting rid of him until we see what Jameis can do would be absolutely foolish.

And I agree with NaplesBucFan, you complain about not having any depth but want to get rid of the little bit of good depth we do have for an unproven commodity. More Foolishness.

  21. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

I guarantee That Glennon is the starter week one. I have members of my family who work for the BUcs. They are saying that glennon is better Thug Jameis. So all you Jameis homers will be disappointed.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

    Here here Couch. I agree.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Curtis Gatorboy…are you the same Curtis Gatorboy that said you have family members that work with the Bucs and that the Bucs are going to draft Mariota?

Tell your dad to do a good job vacuuming Lovie’s office and keep those windows clean!

  24. Tiny Tim Says:

    Curtis is a racist thug!!!!!

  25. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Why would u say that tiny Tim?

  26. Fsuking Says:

I accuse you of sealing my car and raping my white neighbor… Now you have a-hole!

  27. TheShaz Says:

We have Glennon this year. Cant guarantee that this time next year.

Its wise to have a capable backup, and when you look around the NFL, please tell me of a #2 better than Mike.

1st Pick in the NFL Draft means that the Bucs sink or swim with Jameis. This leaves Glennon as backup. I can not see the scenario where Winston does not get the start day one short of injury or suspension.

Best thing Glennon can do is light up the scoreboard during Pre Season and go shopping for a fatter contract next spring. At this rate, I think Cleveland might be a good option, I hear they will take anyone as a QB.

  28. Jeagan1999 Says:

Until our offensive line can prove that they are not just a giant hunk of Swiss cheese, allowing anything and everything to penetrate into our backfield at will, it makes no sense to even think about trading a quality QB. If anything, we should be stockpiling more passers….chances are we will need them!

  29. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

FSUking. How does that make sense. You don’t know me. Don’t be silly. That’s not even close to the same scenario

  30. Capt.Tim Says:

Curtis Gaytorboy- it’s really amazing they can relay rumors from From OneBuc,
What with the 7 year Vacculock attachment they’ve maintained on Tebow’s scrotum!
Did they tap out their secret messages in Morse Code? , or do they sort gargle it- and Tim translates for them?

  31. Trubucfan22 Says:

What makes everyone think we could get a third for glennon? Back up qbs do not fetch a kings ransom. We would be lucky to get a 6th for glennon and most likely only a 7th. I honestly dont remember what the texans gave up for mallet, but i do rememeber thinking to myself, “thats it?”. Sure belicheat was helping out his pal, but if he could have gotten a third for mallet im sure he would have taken that offer if it ever presented itself. And mallet was considered a better prospect than glennon is. Im no glennon fan, but it makes mote sense to keep glennon since the return pick is mostly going to be a late round pick.

  32. Fsuking Says:

And you don’t know Jameis do ya Curtis? That’s kind of my point. You calling him a thug is simply spewing hateful thoughts without any credibility or knowledge of what you are saying. He’s a 4.0 student who’s football IQ is through the roof. He commands a room like he’s the President and has gone out of his way to help others since his FSU days. He has displayed zero “Thuggish” behavior whatsoever as a professional athlete. Without a false rape accusation and some sensationalized ESPN reporting, Jameis would be universally loved and respected. For now, he will just have to settle for being America’s Quarterback with some supremely ignorant haters.

  33. Tiny Tim Says:

I am sorry Curtis, I was wrong. You are not a racist thug. You are a racist thug who wears white sheets over your face.

  34. The original "Kevin" Says:

Joe you keep calling it a 2 – 14 team….yet your other articles continue to highlight how much of an affect having marcus arroyo as our oc had on the entire team. If it was really that big of a deal (which it was) than why are they still viewed as a 2 -14 team with the addition of Koetter??? As many close games as they were in last year, koetter and the additions of defense with experience in the system its hard to argue they aee as bad now as they were. Its not accurate to hudge the talent on the team based on last years record. They were a rutterless ship. The steering has been repaired. They seem primed to make a big improvement this year. If it werent for winston being a rookie Id be confident on betting a playoff birth this season.
