Gholston Says He’s Better After Intense Summer

July 31st, 2015

GholstonRemember when Bucs third-year defensive end Will Gholston posted a video of himself working this offseason with Hall of Fame sackmaster Chris Doleman?

Well, Joe talked to Gholston about that this morning at One Buc Palace.

It seems that wasn’t part of some one-day seminar or weekend retreat. Gholston, on his own dime, spent nearly a month in John’s Creek, Georgia, at an intense camp for defensive linemen. (Gholston confirmed Adrian Clayborn was there, too.)

“It was phenomenal to be able to pick the brain of somebody who’s done it and be able to be very successful at it,” Gholston said. “It was such a great experience. I was there for three weeks, close to a month. It’s on the field, in the classroom, weight room. It’s basically just a whole pre-camp.”

It was the first time Gholston took on this kind of challenge — during his vacation.

Joe had to ask the mild-mannered, soft-spoken Gholston whether he thinks it made him a better pass rusher. Gholston had plenty of confidence in his voice and his body when he replied, “I know it did for a fact.”

The Bucs don’t have the best stable of defensive ends, but they’ve got one hungry young group across the board at the position. To steal a line from the ol’ ball coach, Raheem Morris, the Bucs’ DEs are exceptionally “yungry.”

I hope he got better because he hasn’t shown much so far… If you can’t earn a starting spot on this roster you aren’t very good…

Off topic comment: I don’t understand the message board thing. Is that only available to certain types of phones, say newer ones? Where it says to register, nothing comes up to do that. I wanted to at least blab politics up against Buc1987.

Lol! Raheemism. Love this ghlstons attitude. Worst case good backup I think.

  8. Capt.Tim Says:

Just gotta hope one ( or more) of these young guys takes advantage of the moment- and becomes a feared pass rusher.
Need one too succeed, until we add Joey Bosa next draft

I just hope smith and johnson show up as our starters but this guy I think has potential to break out

No you don’t. It’s the last thing you want to do…

Smith is a good pass rusher but when you are against a running team you are going to want Gholston in there. When he was healthy and got a start in 2013 he got three sacks quickly. He’s healthy again now and has done what no Buc DE has done and spent his own money to hone his craft and get in shape for camp. He has the talent to be the best DE we have. Go Gholston. He is SERIOUS!!!

Remember that Melvin played some DE for Dallas and I have seen video on him and he is cat quick and has been an all pro. He also is great against the run. So to me the best result would be to have Gholston as one DE starter and Melvin as the other and have Smith and Johnson as situational and relief DEs. If this happens the Bucs can be very dangerous and feared on Defense this year! Pick the best two of the rest for development and put them on the Practice Squad.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Stop the Run- on your way to the QB!
All we need is one of these guys to grab the brass ring.
If not, if the collective can be productive

This guy has all the tools to be great. Not sure what he has lacked in the past to put them together but I hope he has found them. I do remember reading a story about Joe Cullen calling him out in practice and really riding him but Gholston took it in stride and said he thinks Cullen is a great coach who has the players best interests in mind.

It is such a change to hear one payer after the other being motivated for this season. I have been saying for a while now that Gholston is going to be the Buccaneers breakout player this year. He has shown improvement each year and was rated #3 for a 4-3 DE in run stop percentage by Pro Football Focus. Gholston only had 2 sacks last year but he did produce 23 QB pressures and hits. He also had a killer 25 stops which are solo tackles for a loss of yardage. Look for Gholston to be the DE to get more snaps than any other DE this year. He could have an 8 to 10 sack year.

    OK!
