More Second-Team Duty For Jameis Winston

June 9th, 2015

Glennonwide

Joe gets that Mike Glennon should have some first-team reps in June, but the latest information makes Joe feel like the Buccaneers are going overboard.

Yesterday’s OTA practice at One Buc Palace — No. 7 of 10 — was closed to media. But the good folks at Buccaneers.com were happy to release dozens of photos from the session.

And there proudly stands Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, appearing as a backup quarterback in several images. Joe’s favorite was Jameis about to take a snap from fourth-team center Jeremiah Warren while Garrett Gilkey lines up at left guard. There’s another with Jameis throwing while roster-bubble safety D.J Swearinger is staring him down with defensive end T.J. Fatinikun coming off the edge.

Joe found plenty of other evidence that Jameis spent a load of time with the second (or third?) unit yesterday.

On Thursday, the previous OTA practice, Jameis operated nearly exclusively with the backups. Media was told it was Glennon’s turn to play starter.

At some point, Jameis getting in perfect sync with Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson, Evan (Dietrich) Smith and others will be critical — so will Jameis getting used to the speed of starting NFL defenders.

Joe supposes Lovie Smith thinks now is not that time.

Don’t go getting your underwear football in a wad. It is just underwear football. Jameis will NOT get used to NFL speed during OTAs. Although he will get a better idea of what to expect, he won’t even get a ‘true’ measure during preseason. I am sure that Lovie/Koetter has Winston’s progress all mapped out. Just be patient. ‘Real’ football isn’t until November anyway.

  2. bucs4lyfe Says:

it’s a smart move why rush Winston if you feel like you don’t have to and give glennon like 4 games to prove how much he sucks. hopefully glennon is starting until they are sure the offensive line can protect

  3. Supersam Says:

I’m gonna laugh my baggets off when they see that Glennon is a better quarterback, he just never had a decent offensive coordinator. Should’ve traded that pic when we had the chance. SMH

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

If getting into sync with the First team is so critical, Why can most of you have already judged MG8’s career when he has had hardly any time in the off-season with the 1’s??? If and that is a big If Jameis does not start the beginning of the year, maybe it will not be a failure of a first round pick, but that MG8 is actually a very good QB!!!

This is the time of year where not much is very indicative of what the season will look like. There will be a multitude of personnel groupings during under wear football as well as mini camp and even some in training camp. We can’t even get any real accurate news since everything is so closed off to the media and only what the Bucs want to release to us is what we get to see and read. We are just all bored out of our gourds waiting for the season, so we create mountains out of mole hills.

  6. Couch Fan Says:

Still see no way Glennon starts game 1 unless he completely out shows Winston during Training Camp and Pre-season. And I’m part of the MGM. Can’t wait!

  7. Dan Says:

There are more teams with the (not 1’s) than there are 1’s if he runs every team other than the ones (2,3,4)he gets more practice with the offensive scheme.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

If Glennon see’s the field the upside to that is another top 3 pick and Lovie will be gone next year. Can’t win with a career backup in this league.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

There are OTAs and Training Camp. Training camp is the same as Mini camp.

  10. Patrick in VA Says:

I wonder if they’ve identified certain packages that Winston doesn’t quite feel comfortable with just yet and they want him to work out his understanding of the nuance of it with the second team and give the rest of the starters a QB that understands what is going on and won’t hamper their ability to grow in the new offense. I’m sure that he’ll put the pieces together between now and training camp and should start seeing the majority of first team reps then.

  11. bucs4lyfe Says:

theres a reason glennon has yet to begin the offseason as a starter and that’s because he sucks. there are too many quarterbacks in the nfl that can use the decent offensive coordinator or too many offensive coordinator excuses. dude is garbage and it has nothing to do with anyone but glennon. at some point in every players career he has to be paid and evaluated based on what said player brings to the table and what he has done. Russell Wilson isn’t getting paid based on what marshawn lynch and the seattle defense does. he’s getting paid based off his talent and what he has done with what he has and all he has is a run game. Wilson wishes he had vjack let alone vjack and mike evans….he has no one at receiver or tight end but still made it to the superbowl

  12. drdneast Says:

Joe pining and fretting away over Winston every day like a school girl with a Justin Bieber crush is getting a little disgusting, if not obscene.

  13. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

It’s well known that Winston inspires his teamates to be better. It’s also well known that the Bucs are woefully short on quality backups. Winston is playing some with the backups because he can help inspire them to push some of the first teamers. This is making the whole team better.

  14. R.O. Says:

Ummmm thinking JW will have to work with these players in TC as well as in Pre Season games instead of risking skill position starters as well as 1st teamers. JW should get lots of pre season game action. With players up and down the depth chart. And what’s wrong having him throw to bubble players? If Labato can’t make throws that JW can that means these players get less chances to showcase their abilities. In short… Who cares.

  16. Stanglassman Says:

The Bucs maybe able to get away with starting Glennon if they were like Seattle last year with a plus 10 in turnovers and only gave up 27 TDs in the regular season. BTW Baldwin is not a bad WR and Lynch does it all so it must be nice to be the QB of that team. I like Wilson but I bet QBs like Josh Johnson wishes and believes if he had a chance to QB a team like that he would be just as successful.

Jameis Winston is God’s Quarterback, and he requires daily worship, not just on Sunday. Be careful, you don’t want to be branded a non-believer and have the wagons circled.

Evaluate the bottom of the roster by using a legit QB

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Um…did anyone consider that the second and third teamers need time with Jameis as well, in case of injuries?

  22. Nick2 Says:

Supersam, saying Glennon is the better quarterback, I assume you watched the last two years of futility????????????? We will live and die with Jameis Winston and if he doesn’t start this year then Lovie and Licht will be sent packing. Just sayin

  23. Pawel Says:

Glennon starts to give Oline time to gel and be ready when Jamesis cones in

  24. SOEbuc Says:

    Pawel

“cones in”?? Were you being witty or was that a misprint?

Not sure if you meant “baguettes” or if you meant something else entirely… yeah, Glennon is great, couldn’t beat UVa or Mighty Vanderbilt as a 5th year senior at NC State, and then never had a signature win in 19 starts as a pro (4-15 sound about right?). I don’t know what you’ve seen in his 2 seasons in the pros that no other pro team has seen…because all I’ve seen is him sucking.

  26. Jeagan1999 Says:

Let them both fight and compete for the starting reps. Competition will make both QBs better. Besides, would it really be so terrible if Glennon started the season?

  27. Buc2015 Says:

Jameis running with the first team in all the photos/video from today (Day 8), FWIW. If there is any hesitation at all about immediately thrusting JW into the starter’s role, the people who run buccaneers.com haven’t received the memo …. their ratio of Jameis stories to all others is about the same as JBF, he dominates the front page.

  29. Firethecannons Says:

@tmax are you always such a negative nancy? I’ve been coming here for years and I’ve never seen you post anything positive. It’s getting old.

  30. Kevin Says:

Sorry Joe but you’ve really got me hoping Glennon starts the season now. Anyone that judges Glennon from his first two seasons is a damn fool.

Nothing in place was a benefit to him. And last year when he got chances with no continuity with the starters he out performed McCown.

The smartest thing to do for this team is to use Koetter to they’re advantage and raise Glennons stock. He will be worth more in a trade after cuter works him into his system.

How much do you think ATL would fetch for Matt Ryan if they put him on the block?

How do you think Matt Ryan would have looked in Josh McCowns place next season?

Matt Ryan was no better than Mike Glennon before Koetter worked with him. It’s a win win for everyone. Nobody is expecting a super bowl win this season so role the dice and let him start. Let Winston learn for half the season or more.

I would start Glennon week 1 and take it easy with Winston. No need to rush the kid that is set to be this teams long term future. It’s smart business.

  31. Kevin Says:

I meant – How do you think Matt Ryan would have looked in Josh McCowns place last season?

  32. Kevin Says:

Unless Winston PROVES…..PROVES that he is without a doubt the better QB there should be an even competition. I believe that is what they are doing right now. ButI have hope for glens future. He’s a bright kid

  33. BucFan20 Says:

Getting yourself all worked up and your haters because Winstons does not take every single snap with the first team? You sound like your children tmax and bucs4lyfe. Mommy, mommy. Little Johnny is playing with my football..

  34. bucsbedabest Says:

C’mon people if the Bucs had confidence in Glennon why did they bench him in favor of the Clown last year? Oh now he is the starter and Jameis has to beat him out of the spot? Do you think for one minute Andrew Luck played with the second team even in underwear? The OTA’s are supposed to be for players to acclimate with the playbook and each other. No one needs to become more accustomed to both than the QB and Offensive Line. Then again, if camp started today, the OL would be LT Smith, LG Mankins, C Smith, RG Gilkey and RT Pamphile. QB better run to the left. Is hari-kari an option?

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    firethecannons

don’t read it if it bothers you. simple as that…. I post plenty of positive items just non pertaining the incompetent lovie smith who is 2-14 and the america’s heartless backup who is 5-13. Please explain to me what is positive about a team that is 2-14. Lovie is a joke.

  36. Digga101 Says:

Slow down Joe it’s only OTA’S Glennon had every right to learn with the first team in a new system also MYSTATE Quarterback is still only a rookie. Usually I agree with you so go drink a beer, it’s only June 9th.

  37. Trubucfan22 Says:

Bucs media knows how to stir the pot. We all know they are trolling us. Glennon is hot garbage.

  38. Rob Says:

Oh, come off it. What a ridiculous ‘article’.
