Lovie Names Four Key “Weapons,” Includes Louis Murphy

June 24th, 2015

The Buccaneers head coach sat back relaxed and wasn’t afraid to name names, but he didn’t name everyone.

Joe’s got video below of Lovie Smith’s recent chat with Scott Smith.

The topic turned to new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and whether he has the weapons he needs to be successful.

“[Koetter] knows what he’s doing. Start with that. When a guy knows what he’s doing, you do need to give him weapons,” Lovie said.

“Receiver wise, most coordinators would like to work with Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, Louis Murphy. Most coordinators would like a tight end like Austin Seferian-Jenkins. You start with that.”

Lovie went on but didn’t reference any other skill position players by name. No Doug Martin. No Kenny Bell. No Tim Wright or Brandon Myers.

Is it significant? Hell, everything Lovie says in June is worth scrutinizing. Regardless, Murphy will be sleeping well this summer. He’s the same guy Lovie cut after 2014 training camp in order to keep Chris Owusu.

I think you could argue that nothing Lovie says in June is important.

Or really at any time. This man’s coach speak is top notch, nothing he says really has any meaning. It was the same in Chicago. Remember this is the guy who said real football starts in November. June? Nah.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like Lovie, but I don’t find anything he says to be very meaningful.

Pat and Lovie say “Koetter knows what he is doing.” That’s opinion and conjecture. Talk is cheap, it takes $$$$ coming from wins to buy whiskey. I’ll be first to buy a round if it works out like the hype.

    I second what unbelievable said.

replace lovie with koetter for head coach, if frazier can’t get it done on the defense replace him with marinelli or ryan problem solved playoffs a giving after this is done, can I get an amen my brothers?

This team is weak at WR after the top 2 – and I’m still not 100% sold on Mike Evans until he shows me he can perform consistently year after year. I was fooled by a big time rookie WR here in Tampa before so I’m going to wait and see.

That being said, I don’t understand why this team isn’t looking at Wes Welker. The guy is a perfect fit for what we need.

Normally I’m with Joe in that Bucs fans just see a recognizable name and yell “sign him.” I don’t think Welker falls in that category though.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

Lovie named 4 offensive weapons, I Bet he can name 4 holes in pass protection even faster!!!

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Creamsicle the cowboys don’t have much by way of WR after Dez Bryant that passing attack is still productive.

  11. ptwalk Says:

There aren’t many, if any, teams that are 3 or 4 deep at receiver.

  12. WS99 Says:

Where is the caveman? Sign him to a 1 yr 300k contract.

  13. Tampa Tony Says:

Lovie is just hoping Koetter can save him from being fired. Lovie is a joke
