Big Year For ASJ?

Is Dirk Koetter’s offense a boon for ASJ?

Yes, Joe remembers well how “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, erupted with glee the night he was drafted when reminded he now has two 6-5 targets to throw to: Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson.

It seemed he forgot about the 6-5 guy who may now be his best friend on the team, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

ASJ has looked sharp in underwear football and could be poised for a big season. Pat Yasinskas of ESPN peels back a few onion skins on the offense to note this.

I think you’re going to see a lot more of the tight ends in the passing game than you did last year. New offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has a history of using tight ends heavily. This is good news for second-year pro Austin Seferian-Jenkins. His production was limited as a rookie by injuries. But I think Seferian-Jenkins will be a big part of the offense this year.

That’s a pretty good point. Koetter likes tight ends, and frankly, ASJ would be a freaking monster nightmare if he is schemed up against a linebacker or perhaps a safety. That, as Dick Vitale would say, is an M&Mer, bay-BEE.

And once ASJ got on a roll, defenses would have to adjust, and that frees up either Evans or Jackson. Sweet.

The key here is that ASJ must stay out of the tub. He was hurt most of last year and Joe doesn’t care how talented a player is, if he is not on the field, it doesn’t matter.

Health, not so much who the quarterback is, will determine if ASJ has a breakout year or not.

Maybe bring in Schiano to teach him ball security. Just sayin

Just look at what JW did with O’Leary…ASJ is bigger and faster…having 3 6’5 receivers.on the field at any given time should put a lot of stress on opposing defenses…

  3. Brandon Says:

Sorry Joe, but for t3 millionth time, ASJ is 6’6″. He measured in officially at 6’5 1/2″ at the Combine last year, or for the mathematical concept of rounding deficient, 6’6″. I can’t understand why major websites have to be so lazy and use college program heights and weights instead of getting official numbers. NFL.com and Buccaneers.com are among the worst offenders.

    Brandon:

Since you enjoy splitting hairs and claim ASJ is 6-5 1/2, why round off to higher digit?

BTW, the Bucs — you know, the team that employs him — have him listed at 6-5. Until the Bucs tell Joe different, ASJ will be 6-5.

If you wish, Joe can provide you the Bucs’ number if you want to lodge a grievance.

    How about Dotson as a tackle eligible…..6’10″………or…..6’9 1/2″….or 6’9n3/4″ or 6’10 1/4″ or 6’10 1/2″……no matter how you measure….he’s tall.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

A lot of Buc fans were excited along with Joe when ASJ was drafted to join the ranks of the Dunkaneers. We all want him to realize that potential as a high drafted pick. I’m not even going to mention the I word, as to not jinx him.

  7. Pete 422 Says:

You could also go double tight ends by bringing in Tim Wright along with ASJ. That would not only give Jameis another option, but also max protect in the passing game.

    Brandon,

Lol, you gotta be sh!tting me!

1/2 inch rant, you da man! 🙂 hahahahahaha

  9. The Real Malloy Says:

In Brandons defense, they list Mike Glennon at 6’6 and he’s 6’7

  10. Bubbabucsfan Says:

Hey, some guys feel that 1/2″ would make a huge difference… “Size counts” lol

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

    Amen Bubba!!!
They say that the tight-end position is a QBs best friend, especially YOUNG QBs. I think of Tony Gonzales and how Atlanta T-O-R-C-H-E-D the Bucs year in year out. It’s promising if he does stay healthy.

  12. Just Win Jameis Says:

Just google ‘austin seferian-jenkins official height’ it’s 6’6″ So why not give
the man everything God gave him? Man has done crazy things for an extra half inch lol

  13. MTM Says:

ASJ is the new Da Quan Bowers of the Bucs! This story reads like one of the Bowers pre season puff pieces that come out every year. Great on paper lousy on the field.

  14. Pick6 Says:

Bucs acquired a respectable substitute in case of injury in Tim wright. Myers or stocker will probably be the true #2, but wright is the best suited to be the passing game mismatch if ASJ goes down for any period of time

  15. LakelandBuc Says:

ASJ should have a good season, they may move Timmy Wright back to WR, he should make a good possession receiver
