“Their Offensive Line’s Still A Mess”

An early season prediction hammers at a Bucs weakness

An early season prediction hammers at a Bucs weakness

Wait one damn minute.

A well respected NFL voice believes Dan Quinn, a first-year head coach, a rookie head coach, will turn the sorry Falcons into division winners this year?

What about Lovie Smith? The man has been to two NFC title games, for crying out loud.

What about Matt Ryan losing offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to the Bucs?

Measured and reasoned former scout turned full-time NFL Network draft guru Daniel Jeremiah says he “likes what Quinn brings scheme-wise” to Atlanta, loves the Falcons draft, and says they’ll win the NFC South with a 9-7 record.

Jeremiah further explained his pick on NFL.com, saying it was really a three-headed coin flip between the Falcons, Panthers and Saints, whose draft he also loved.

The Bucs are not in the picture. “Their offensive line’s still a mess,” Jeremiah said.

This doesn’t surprise Joe, but it still sucks to hear.

If that Bucs offensive line proves to be a mess again, then there will be all kinds of change coming, from personnel to position coach and beyond.

Its More than just ” the O-line”!!! there are many other reasons why Lovie will have the Bucs in the Basement again!!!

  2. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Why, because you’re some sort of clairvoyant and can see into the future. F@$! a$$…

  3. bucs4lyfe Says:

aaaah shut up both of you….should the bucs have drafted jameis then 5 brand new lineman? no because you’d still be saying the same thing about the offensive line. it’s really stupid to say the bucs need to draft lineman all offseason before the draft then say the line still sucks even though your saying the bucs have upgraded the talent along the line……it’s stupid to say and it’s annoying, you don’t have to have the best offensive line in football to have a good football team. theres no one in the world that can say the Atlanta falcons have that much better of an offensive line hell they started lineman cut by the bucs. so all that turnover and Atlanta will still win the division I cant wait to call him an idiot when that prediction fails

  4. robert 9 Says:

if they play not to lose again it’s gonna be ugly again

    thats lovies philosophy.so we’ll see.

  5. WS99 Says:

I’ve been watching highlights of weeks 10-17. The line was good enough but mclown was super hot garbage. Held the ball too long, fumbled the ball on our 4 yard line, threw interceptions at the worst time. Hell even Martin and simms were breaking long runs towards the end of the season.

Oddly enough I’m more worried about the secondary (not banks) than any other unit. Johnson and Verner got burnt more than Michael Jackson at a Pepsi concert.

  6. WS99 Says:

Watch week 10 vs Falcons and you’ll see our secondary get manhandle in the 3rd qrt. The oline, other than at RT, did a decent job.

  7. mike Says:

Well, we have zero depth so base case sinario we could push for the playoffs if everything goes right… but if we had a few key injuries, could be ugly

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

Whatever. I’m all in on 9-10 + wins and a division challenge

  9. bucco brice Says:

whatever…things are better at this point than last year…Mankins on a mission sounds good, D.Smith and Marpet couldn’t be worse than last year’s duo, Dotson can be counted on…staying healthy will be key, I’d worry about the depth. Next year’s draft will involve futrther additions for sure

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Send the 49ers a Conditional Pick for RG Alex Boone

  11. LargoBuc Says:

Both o lines are s mess. And the Falcons have matt Ryan. Imagine how bad they would look up front with Mccown under center.
Ryan going to have to do everything on offense. Ither than Julio, we can match all of their play makers. We have more at running back and i would take VJax over Roddy any day.
You can talk about scheme but cmon. Quinn wont have half the staff he had in Seattle, especiallt in the backfield. Jameis will have two big games against these guys.
In our division, Carolina has the most balanced team and will win the south.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    @luvmybucs

No, the Bucs will have a top 5 draft pick for next year, do not give those up. Keep hopefully re-stocking the talent ( the bucs really need it!!!)

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Trade a 5th round pick for Evan Mathis

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @The Buc Realist

Hahaha, yeah your right 6-10 is a lock if we can’t fix this line. O well

  15. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Lord Corneilus I’m with you. You sound like one the rare breeds on this site that don’t necessarily have to see in order to believe.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I would give up a 5th & 6th round pick all day for LG Evan Mathis & RG Alex Boone.

Don’t get me wrong–Mankins seems like a real good dude.

But when you take into account his age and two bad knees…smh
    IMO-Not a sound investment.

  17. snook Says:

Dan Quinn gets way more credit than he deserves in Seattle. Gus Bradley built the foundation there.

  18. mac Says:

Jeremiah is a tool… He obviously was not that great at his scouting and various NFL jobs or he would not be on TV talking about the NFL like Mark Dominik, America’s worst GM…

  19. WS99 Says:

    Realist

I want you to think ’84 dolphins. Believe brother BELIEVE!! Hell think 2011 Broncos for all I care but think brother think!

  20. ShutTheBucUp Says:

The problem is Lovie. He’s stuck in his ways, which may have worked 5 years ago, but they just don’t fly anymore. The Tampa 2 has proved to be useless against good pocket passing QBs (every QB in our division). We don’t have dominant pass rushers outside of GMC, so its just not going to work. Our offense will have to score at least 20+ points per game to win. And with a rookie QB, a shoddy O-line, no holes to run through and a stubborn defensive minded coach, we’ll be lucky to win 4 games.

  21. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Hell even Schiano won 7 games with an inferior roster after a season where the entire team just quit. What does that tell you?

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    No reason to disrespect DJ.

Daniel Jeremiah, is a real down to earth brotha. A lot of folks don’t like the direction the scouting community is going in. Its almost like working for the secret service now-Because they’re asking these kats-too–not only vet the prospects and their parents-but now they want you to included the uncle, the nephew..the dog, the cat…etc, etc.

So as a scout you can bang the table all day long about various prospects–only to have upper management/personnel-you the thumbs down for any number of reasons. That typically have absolutely nothing to do with football.

U might as well stay home and raise the kids & run a personalized scouting service on the side. Or –if you’ve got the chops– go make more money, with less stress on the NFL Network. The commute from SD to LA for work (NFL NETWORK). Is a helluva lot better than driving all over the West (To Review Prospects).

  23. OAR Says:

“You sound like one the rare breeds on this site that don’t necessarily have to see in order to believe.”
And here I thought aliens and bigfoot weren’t real!

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*only to have upper management/personnel-*give you the thumbs down for any number of reasons. That typically have absolutely nothing to do with football.

  25. Big Irish Says:

We’re gonna be fine. We finally have an experienced OC and the Tampa 2 defense will show up this year. Oh yeah, we’ve finally got a franchise QB.

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Last place for the Bucs, what has this guy been snorting? Hogwash! You got another think coming buddy, that one is off the deep end.

  27. bucsbedabest Says:

Dotson, Mankins and Smith need to step if the Bucs are going to contend. Bucs should have drafted TJ Cummings in 4th round and concentrated more on OL. Check out Pro Football Focus stats for the Bucs OL last year. TB OL ranked 27 pass blocking efficiency total pressures allowed. Collins, Omameh, Cousins and Gilkey combined for 12 sacks, 28 QB hits and 63 QB hurries. Notice the amount of penalties. The Buc offense will improve not having Collins, Cousins on team and Omameh and Gilkey not starting. If Dotson, Mankins, Smith & Smith and Marpet do not perform and penalties/sacks continue I believe George Warhop and coaching has a lot to do with it.

    •Demar Dotson – (15-1) 6, 2, 20
    •Logan Mankins – (7-1) 3, 5, 14
    •Evan Smith – (6-1) 2, 4, 14
    •Patrick Omameh – (5-2) 5, 6, 25
    •Anthony Collins – (10-1) 1, 14, 14
    •Oniel Cousins – (5-0) 4, 6, 19
    •Garrett Gilkey – (9-3) 2, 3, 7

  28. LakelandBuc Says:

The Falcons O-Line is just as worst as the Bucs, they even had a Buc rethread starting at RT(Gabe Carimi) Lovie and Jason are on the right path, build through the draft, let the young players grow together. And for all of the fake fans who is so hard on Jason and Lovie, get on another ship,we don’t need that negative vibe on a Bucs forum.Even if we finish next season 2-14 again,we will still get high picks and I like the picks that Jason and Lovie has made so far. And im tired of these fools pointing a finger at Lovie, Lovie has been very patient with Jason drafting offensive players and only one defensive player, because Lovie knows that next year will be all about defense in the draft and maybe another O-Lineman.Go Bucs

  29. Arealbucsfan Says:

What about the O-line ATL has……. They look worse than us honestly.

  30. The Real Malloy Says:

I never listen to Jamie Dukes…always, always, ALWAYS wrong….

    I’m with the positive crowd……

These cats are going to want to play for Jameis, The Barbecue Master came to OTA’s with a 6 pack, EDS can only improve, and we have two 2nd rounders with TONS of potential. Not to mention my boy John Coffee being one of the better RT’s (say top 10) in the league….

9-7 or better……..we’re going to shock the NFL world.

  31. The original "Kevin" Says:

Well this guy is clearly an idiot if he thinks atl will win the south. I will bet anyone right now that atl finishes last in our division. Bucs first saints second panthers third. WATCH!!!!!

  32. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Weird many of you forget the 90-3 ass whooping the dixie chicks gave the bucs on national tv, what has changed with the bucs offensively? a rookie qb, and a d3 OL and a 50/50 2nd round pick added to the same coach who ran the OL…i think personnel decisions have been terrible, im with the crowd that wants mathis and boone and why not kick the tires on jake long, it wouldnt hurt….daniel jerimiah has no dog in the fight and i respect his evaluations and 5-11, or 6-10 is going to be the year so he is spot on

  33. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Or could it quite possibly be your arse is bigfoot or an alien. I wouldn’t know would I, not on your end of the screen. Bright guy.

  34. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

But OAR let me give you an example of how it works. I dreamed and imagined Jamies in a Buccs uniform. I believed in the magic of my inner mind. Funny, chit became reality. Put it together home boy.

  35. gotbbucs Says:

They need to decide who is going to play each position and move forward with a plan. Taking a guard and having him play tackle one day and then guard the next and vica versa is so counter productive. The guys that they believe are starters need to be set in place and let them work together almost exclusively so they get a good feel for each other and learn to communicate.
Lovie treats his depth charts like a one week fantasy league and it is getting nobody anywhere fast. These are professional athletes, enough with the mind games.

  36. WS99 Says:

REJOICE! For the Kingdom of Jameis is Near!!

  37. WalkdaPlank Says:

That’s a fair assessment, we will be bringing back 3 starters from last year’s horrid O-line as well as the O-line coach who led them. You got a guy who was traded and obviously doesn’t want to be here, another guy who claims to be a center yet can’t snap the ball from the gun without rolling the damn thing and his 15 minutes of fame came when he was stomped on, and lastly you have a pretty decent right tackle, yet he commits lots of penalties.

I like the Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet picks, but they are no Jake Matthews or Taylor Lewan from last year’s draft. They will have an uphill battle, especially Marpet who was not D1, not D2, but D3. I am confident that our new rookie QB will make it easier for them and won’t be as bad as McClown or Glennon last season, but can’t shake the fear of Jameis constantly getting trigger happy because of limited time to throw or lack of run game. He is not God, even though some of you treat him like one. If he doesn’t get the time or help, he will throw picks and he will get sacked. But hopefully, under Koetter and some new faces, the O-line gels well and we get to see some of that 26-0.

  38. The Real Malloy Says:

    WalkdaPlank…

Come on man. He rolled the snap once or twice….

If EDS improves (excuse me, ES) we have a much better line…

  39. cmurda Says:

So, no love for Ali Marpet and Donovan Smith? Before they have even taken the field in preseason? I can’t take analysis seriously before anything happens in game action.

  40. SteveO Says:

    More like Daniel Jerecryah…

I actually listened to this one and In all seriousness I do like his podcasts, but in a lot of cases with these all 32 team analysis episodes a lot of the important details get skimmed over (or not at all), with the end result some times being a kind of lazy analysis that takes the path of least resistance while relying on a past always predicting the future credo.

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

    The Real Malloy

Lol yeah I was exaggerating, I believe it was 3 times but that’s embarrassing enough. I think Smith would do better if he slid over to guard, if Marpet can snap like I hear he can.

  42. BucFan20 Says:

And did not snap it how many times? And over the QBs head how many times? Or early how many times?

  43. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I don’t know about the Falcons, but the Bucs oline IS still a mess. Even if our rookies both turn out to be franchise players, it will take time for them to develop…and time to become serviceable.

Our old tackle is completely unproven and we have the same center as last year, a guy who cost us 2-3 games himself.

It’s a work in progress that will take at least 2 more years to fix, because EVEN if they draft for it next year, those guys will need at least a season to acclimate.

And here’s the thing. Some people here expect an instant improvement or they will give up on coaches and players.

For example…what position will Smith play? Right Tackle. What are rookie right tackles famous for?

Penalties. Lots of them. It is unavoidable as he adjusts to the pros. That will end up alienating know it all fans who expected him to be perfect from the start.

  44. Architek Says:

I mean we are guilty until proven innocent – are we surprised?

    Just win.

  45. Mike10 Says:

Not sure I disagree either joe.

If the line proves an asset, the coaching will be praised as they would have surprised with little to work with.

If they don’t do well, heads will roll as it will be back to back years.

I just don’t get why you set yourself up for failure again with your biggest need going into 2015.

  46. Arealbucsfan Says:

@Bonzai its already been said. He’s a LT not a RT. It irks me every time i see that

  47. drdneast Says:

Carolina was 5-9 last year with Cam Newton at the helm.
Yet to hear him talk he thinks he’s the best QB in the league.
Folks, that is what you call hubris.
Even worse is he is one of the worst QB’s in the league when tossing the long ball.
Teams have figured out how to play Newton by keeping him contained in the pocket and not allowing him to break the pocket and scramble for yardage.
This is why he took so many hits last year.
I have no idea why everybody is so high on this clown. Josh Freeman had a better record than Cam in his fourth year before he had a meltdown at 7-9 and people were questioning his abilities.

  48. lurker Says:

buccaneer football 2015 — own the moment

  49. Andrew 1 Says:

I’m calling a 7-9 season, with a bright future ahead. We got a solid foundation (players AND coaches) now all we need to do is keep building off of it. If everything goes right this season then maybe 9-7. maybe.

  50. WS99 Says:

Teddy Bridgewater went 7-9 last year without a single probowler on the roster.

  51. FortMyersDave Says:

Daniel Jeremiah is the Pierre Gammons (MLB network, Red Sock Homer, Tampa Ray Hater) of football. He throws about a 100 things out there and brags when 2 or 3 stick, why give this @-hole any time JOE????… I hope he is wrong just like Pat Yasinkas was when he proudly told Carolina Nation and his new bosses at the Charlotte Observer that the Bucs would be 0-16 under Gruden after the Tribune let him go……. He writes good articles for BSPN currently but the stigma of being a jilted troll who picked Tampa 0-16 sticks with me…

  52. America's Bucs Fan Says:

The Buc’s upcoming schedule is so very, very soft that I think 8 wins is a real possibility

The Buc’s upcoming schedule is so very, very soft that I think 8 wins is a real possibility

I agree, but 6 wins is more realistic as a goal as the Bucs will probably gag away a winnable game vs the Titans or Jags just to see how high they can jack our blood pressure! 😉 I am a Bucs fans since ’76 so the prospect of choking vs the Titans is a reality to me, Lovie may do a Leeman on us!

  54. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

The o-line was addressed and hopefully will improve as the season progresses. The lack of real talent at safety and defensive end is a real problem.

I won’t even address the “tank job” Nole talked about above. L&L came in and said Bucs fans should not ave to wait for a turn around. To suggest they tanked prior to the last game is just silly.

  55. lovinsomecrablegs Says:

marpet will be a beast on the line because he will be playing with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove he belongs, being from division 3 football, you do not think that he will not study his arse off, and big Donovan will be just fine on the left, this line will perform better this season, and it is because of having a competent O.C. and a future H.O.F. that’s right I said it, who will insist they play to his standard. they just need to be serviceable, they don’t need to be the hogs yet. that’s coming, we still have first dibs on the waiver wire until week three of the regular season, where we can find a couple of veteran O-lineman who can be of help. and maybe a defensive end.

  56. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Who are the legit offensive linemen still available in free agency?
