Stop With The Mariota Jersey Stupidity

May 25th, 2015

Jiminy freakin’ Christmas, one vague line from a Titans official, relayed by ESPN.com, has Jamies Winston haters and the Marcus Mariota Gang pounding their chests.

Talk about a reach.

Here the line: “According to the Titans’ director of finance, Stuart Spears, Mariota’s jersey currently ranks as the NFL’s top seller in May.”

Joe asks: Does this mean actual sales of jerseys to fans, or just orders to stores in Oregon and Hawaii and throughout Tennessee hoping to sell jerseys? There’s a big difference. Without that info, Joe is unimpressed.

Show Joe real numbers after a few months.

Regardless, Joe doesn’t care about jersey sales. Jameis has been a villain through much of the country for years now. For those yearning to compare apparel sales of quarterbacks, that would limit his jersey sales on a national scale.

Don’t worry. America’s Quarterback, Jameis, will prove to be just that in department stores before it’s all over.

  1. Luther Says:

Winston lost a lot of endorsements to unproven allegations. Him “losing” the jersey battle is just a symptom of the battering that ESPN put on him. I really don’t care since we drafted the QB that I wanted. Winning cures all and I think Winston will be more successful that Mariota when all is said and done.

  2. Bucamania Says:

Last year this time Manziel had the number 1 selling jersey.

    I see a trend.

  3. Ray Rice Says:

RG3 was the leader in jersey sales too. We all saw how quick that fire was extinguished. Meanwhile the more boring lunch pail QB (Luck) has done nothing but go to the playoffs.

Jersey sales don’t mean $hit! Jameis will provide stability at the QB position for the YUCS franchise for a long time.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Surely “America’s Quarterback” will eventually have “America’s #1 selling jersey”….

  5. Rrsrq Says:

If the Bucs had a black jersey, the villain jersey, #3 will rise to the top, the pewter pirate, the Bucs could market their colors so much better

  6. Jacko101 Says:

    Americas QB? Lol

  7. Cobraboy Says:

Maybe Mariota is actually “America’s Quarterback” as fans vote with their wallets…

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Luther I think that Winston will be much more successful than Mariota. Much more. As far as this jersey thingy goes. Really? Why is this even an issue?

    First of all.

If you’re not a Bucs fan, are you going to go out and buy one of those BK uniforms just to have one, because you like Winston? Nope that jersey is hideous….

If you are a Bucs fan, are you gong to go out and buy one of these hideous monsters? A few will, me for one will. I think most Buc fans loathe the new uniform, judging by what I saw at RJS last year. Lots of the old red ones were there. I’m really not even so sure winning will get fans to buy these monstrosities and I feel bad for anyone that actually puts one on, including myself. I might actually buy one, put it on, and then put it in the closet never wearing it again. It’s that ugly.

Secondly…everyone looks good in blue. I seriously think if Winston were to have gone to the Titans his jersey sales would be quite brisk, because our jersey is THAT ugly.

People can think it’s the good guy vs bad guy thingy all they want, and it might have a little bit of something to do with it, but I think it has very little to do with it.

I wore a creamsicle Vinny jersey in high school and got picked on by my peers everytime I wore it. I can’t even imagine some kid wearing one of these new jersey’s to school. That poor S.O.B.

  9. Luther Says:

@87 I agree…I have my Winston jersey and will be in attendance for the first game with family. I know many of my friends will be there as well.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

It’s one thing to be winning and wearing that ugly jersey around town. BUT to wear that ugly thing AND our team sucks? That’s double jeopardy. Not going to happen…

I have no problem sporting my Brooks, Alstott, Sapp, or Lynch jersey around town, even if my team sucks. BUT that thing. Nope, no way.

  11. America's Bucs Fan Says:

Yep, be in denial all you want to, but if there really is an “America’s Quarterback” Winston is not even in the conversation. It’s really kind of ignorant to say that somebody is “America’s Quarterback” when they haven’t even thrown their first NFL pass yet. I will however say that Joe has given me some huge belly laughs with his new click getting campaign though

  12. WS99 Says:

Well we might as well forfeit week 1 then. Mariota will obvious win bc his jersey is selling better.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Winston IS America’s QB if he’s always in the news, for good or for bad. Can’t see how some of you don’t understand that.

  14. bucs4lyfe Says:

Lol because jersey sales actually matter in may?

  15. Buc1987 Says:

WS99 from Windermere I think the Bucs are going to beat Mariota’s ass.

  16. America's Bucs Fan Says:

In 3 years from now, these Winston jersies will be selling at yard sales for $1.00 like the Freeman jersies are now

  17. WS99 Says:

    87

Ha. That’s not funny. Haha. I think that’s why joe made the technical upgrades.

  18. The original "Kevin" Says:

Meaningless… Manziel Jerseys flew off the shelves and he is sitting in rehab

  19. Ben Says:

The bucs did not pick the best qb in the draft but the one to sell more tkts in Tampa stadium. M.M. is a much better athlete ,much faster ,scored higher on nfl test, and better completion average . How many teams wanted Winston in draft and how many chased M.M. who is also a better man? The stadium will have more people at the games but short sided on the bucs part

  20. Danati74 Says:

We don’t care about winning sales for jerseys,…just winning games. We went thru the process of getting a QB and WINSton came out on top. #1. Now he will win games…while the next running QB will get hurt or fade away. we got the Manning>Leaf, The Luck>RGIII…the WINSton>Mariota. See the trend? GO BUCS!!!

  21. Bangkok Buc Says:

I wonder how much this actually has to do with the specific QB’s or if it’s an indication of how ugly our new jerseys are. They are even worse than the god-awful Titan Blues.

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Dag I can’t wait to hear those cannons.

  23. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

87, I haven’t been able to post on this site in weeks bcuz it continually crashed on me. I know it looks like I was skipping out on the jersey bet, but I attempted to communicate with u multiple times on here immediately after the draft asking for your address and I also emailed your wife a few weeks ago. Will u please just send me your address??? Thank u.

  24. lurker Says:

this is a non-issue and yet there is an article.

also, joe would be hollering from the rooftops if jameis had the top-selling jersey.

  25. Luther Says:

@Ben “scored higher on nfl test” this is so funny. I’ve taken the Wonderlic and scored higher than both of them and I’m not an NFL QB. Watch the film and come back to us.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

    Ben Says :

“How many teams wanted Winston in draft and how many chased M.M. who is also a better man?”

I don’t know you tell me?

How many teams called the Bucs about Winston and the first pick?

Come back and give me an answer…

  27. lion Says:

Jersey sales and wins are two entirely different things. I’ll take the guy that wins football games over the guy that sells jerseys any day. Also, winning football games will sell jerseys in the long run.

  28. Charlie7 Says:

Are the Titans jerseys Nike? If so where did Oregon get all their ugly uni’s? The Bucs let Nike have too much input just as did the Noles, with the jersey designs. Jameis could play in a T shirt with magic marker #’s and still be better than Mariota. As Jimbos said, “You make the helmet, the helmet doesn’t make you”.

  29. Buccfan37 Says:

The smart move might be hold off buying a favorite rookie players jersey until they have proved their worthiness over a longer period of playing time, unless money is no object. I have 4 different mint Bucs Super Bowl magazines that came out in the days after that victory, I’ve been trying to sell them but no takers yet.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

    Ben?

  31. WalkdaPlank Says:

The fact that Joe is getting his panties in a bunch over jersey sales is hilarious. Who gives a rat’s ass, huh? Ask Johnny Rehab or JeMarcus Russell or Vince Young how much jersey sales matter.

Winston now has to wear a clown suit to work every Sunday so he’s also got that against him. I will never buy one of those Burger King outfits, I don’t care what name you slap on the back.

  32. Stokes963 Says:

Do the Titans sell any other players jersey?

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    Marcus Mariota …”America’s Loser”

  34. WS99 Says:

    Stokes963

    Yes! Eddie George

  35. Ryan Says:

writs article about jersey sales yet claims not to care about jersey sales.

Joe sure can get his panties in a wad over the dumbest of things that may be a slight against Winston.

  36. Ray Rice Says:

    Albert Haynesworth!

  37. Yungry Says:

Look at all these haters including the writer of this story…Why does it bother you so much that an article had to be written about it? I thought this was a Bucs’ site…Joe’s obsession with Marcus is evident

  38. Babaloo Says:

Jersey sales are obviously the one and only indisputable talent evaluator for new players coming into the league. Simply put, they infallibly show the talent, the drive and the love of the game that a particular player brings into the NFL and show what that player will undoubtedly accomplish in his entire career.

This just in… the Nfl is fielding refunds for Manziel and Blackmon jerseys as apparently, despite all the top-notch scientific research that goes into jerseys and the marketing the league does in order to ensure excellence in their new employees…they still suck.

What a day. I think I’m going to go deflate my balls.

  39. BucTrooper Says:

The top two picks in the draft went to two of the teams with most God-awful uniforms.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    Yungry Says:

“Joe’s obsession with Marcus is evident”

I thought he was obsessed with Winston, now you’re telling us he’s obsessed with ass clown Mariota…

  41. Buc1987 Says:

    Okay got ya Erik.

I send ya an email tonight.

  42. WalkdaPlank Says:

“now you’re telling us he’s obsessed with ass clown Mariota…”

The war is over, stand down 87. It’s okay to still be salty over the Rose Bowl but save your Mariota insults for opening day.

  43. BigMacAttack Says:

Put it on tape. Everything else is just bs.

  44. Connor Says:

I bet the hideous new uniforms have a lot to do with it.

  45. ATrain Says:

Joe, sorry to say this but Dumb story means nothing.

I am not a Winston fan, but I’m a Bucs fan and he is our QB.

    Mariota Who?

Let’s talk about Bucs scoring TD ‘s
    And Defense Sacking QBs

    GO BUCS

  46. Skyline Crew Says:

I have Evan jerseys and will be getting a McCoy jersey. Like the new jerseys so non issue with that. Shouldn’t be surprised about Mariota though, I’m sure a lot of people from Hawaii bought one or two. Tampa is a small market place.

  47. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

That was insight spoken Skyline, dag I’ve grown so use to totally disagreeing with your post that now I’m starting to feel funny agreeing with you bro.

  48. Skyline Crew Says:

We really only disagreed on Winston. Not much else. He’s here now though so I’ll cross my fingers and hope for the best. Can’t be worse than 2-14.

  49. Clint Says:

Have my fresh and clean Jameis jersey hanging in my closet.

  50. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

I’m going to get a #3 jersey but where the name goes it will say “Some”-3some!
Hell, I have a #40 jersey that says Alldrop and a #19 that says Meshawn. Other than my #13 Evans Jersey all mine make a statement. Like it or not. Simple as that.

  51. lurker Says:

so what was “ben’s” screenname before the draft?

  52. Stanglassman Says:

That was a good point that the Titans have no other popular players on their team. I also think it’s worth mentioning the Titans spent a ton of money on digital billboards all through Nashville and the surrounding areas.
It does seem to matter how many times everyone explained on this board and elsewhere why it seemed at one point that teams wanted to move up for MM and not Jameis. I’ll try one more time for Ben. If there were 32 Jameis Winstons in this draft Marcus Mariota might have got drafted at the 20 spot in one of the rounds otherwise he may have went undrafted.

  53. BDorry55 Says:

There would be one more Jameis jersey sale from this guy if they would put out the authentic. Not wasting money on their crap replicas.

  54. grafikdetail Says:

both players have been the best selling jersey… even topping Tom Brady

  55. Oahubuc Says:

If Winston puts in several good years and it’s a throwback jersey, I might get one. I don’t buy these kids’ jerseys. David and McCoy are almost eligible, though. All mine are classics from proven Bucs, and I doubt I’ll ever take to the Burger King uniforms.

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

At least these are better than the creamsicle uniforms. They looked like somebody pissed and puked on em’.

  57. FortMyersDave Says:

I am sure Raider fans bought a lot of Russell jerseys across the nation…. I have to agree with Skyline about the uniforms too: the new ones just don’t do it for me and though I have been a fan since ’76 I simply can not get into the creamsicle uniforms either as it evoked too many bad memories surrounding one Hugh Culverhouse. I wish the Bucs stuck with the classic Pewter nad Red that they wore from ’97 through the Super Bowl run….

  58. MTM Says:

Jersey sales equate to nothing in terms of wins. Tebow had the number 1 selling jersey for a while….

  59. Bucfansinz1986 Says:

Every time I re-visit this site (which is becoming less and less frequently), all I see from Joe is the dumb “America’s quarterback”….and now excuses why his jersey doesn’t sell. We all know why, and it ain’t the colors. Talented or not, The Great Divider is a bad pick.

  60. pick6 Says:

hey remember when tim tebow had the top selling jersey in america?

  61. pick6 Says:

    *MTM beat me to it.

  62. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    You mean the hold-out QB?

I actually don’t think it’s a big deal, but, we all know that if it were Jameis who wasn’t signed yet, that people would be criticizing him over it. But, since it’s Marcus, they say nothing.

  63. BuccaneEric Says:

The Jersey bet lives!!! Good job Erik Clean!!

  64. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

OMG if it were the other way around Love, they would be screaming bloody murder.
