Gerald McCoy The Best?

The geeks at Pro Football Focus have high praise

Lord only knows where this Bucs team would be without Gerald McCoy to anchor the interior of the defensive line.

Then again, the Bucs were a horrible 2-14 last year, winning the Chase for Jameis.

If you thought the defense was a sieve at times last year — Hello, Atlanta! Hello, Baltimore.) — it would have been a friggin’ complete and total jailbreak without GMC.

How good is GMC? There is none better, per the numberscrunchers over at Pro Football Focus.

The geeks did their pecking on their Excel spreadsheets and concluded GMC was No. 34 in their Top 100 players, and stated no defensive tackle is better in getting heat on the quarterback.

34. Gerald McCoy, ID, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4th)

An interesting year for McCoy who dealt with an injury that impacted his performance and playing time, as well as developing a habit for jumping offsides that contributed to him being flagged 10 times. Yet despite that, he still was an incredibly productive pass rusher grading positively in all bar one games in this regard. It may not have been 2013 but it was still impressive.

Best Performance: Week 5, TB @ NO, +8.9

Key Stat: Had the highest pass rushing grade of all defensive tackles.

It is almost criminal the Bucs can’t find a decent, full-time defensive end to go along with GMC’s talents. Just criminal. And, no, Joe still hasn’t gotten over how the Bucs let Michael Bennett walk away for no good reason.

Still, it is cool to see GMC, good guy that he is, rated as the best in the NFL. Damn that former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik!

Aaron Donald 9 sacks rookie year. That is all good day.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for GMC!!!

  2. David Says:

It is amazing how many people claim to be football fans and claim to know football and yet have no idea how difficult it is for defensive tackles to get sacks. And how they are absolutely clueless about QB pressure and how that pressure from a DT is every bit as good as a sack, especially when there is a DE worthwhile.

  3. INDYbucsfan Says:

@WS99 Donald had an amazing line around him. If the bucs had just 1 on the rushers the Rams had then GMC would’ve been over 10 I’m sure.
We should see if we could trade glennon to Seattle for Bennett. Looks like Wilson isn’t going to accept a low ball offer. And they need some insurance.

    David

    It amazes me too.

  5. Luther Says:

What amazes me is that you had people who wanted to draft another DT or DE instead of a QB. Just remember that J.J. Watt enjoyed the playoffs with a bucket of popcorn like the rest of us fans.

  6. iamkingsu Says:

Stop listening to those damn spread sheeters they were high on Anthony Collins too! I love GMC but I’m starting to realize he’s not SUH! There’s no doubt that he makes our defense better but when you take a step back and look at it what is the highest our defense ever finished with him anchoring the middle??

  7. WS99 Says:

Search “DT ranking sacks” and it will all be clear.

Don’t get me wrong GMC is the best 3tech in the game, but I digress, so anyway about that house in the Everglades, it has a very strong foundation you will love owning it. Remember cash or money orders only.

  8. Snook Says:

Like Dominik had any other choice at #3 in that draft…

  9. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Indy your idea Glennon for Bennett would be a dream come true.

  10. John McKillop Says:

Every game last season McCoy graded out as the second best d lineman in the league, only behind JJ Watt.

  11. PocketPirate Says:

We have so many pretty decent DE’s I think one or two stand up and really shine this year shocking everyone.

  12. chickster Says:

Letting benett walk has never been talked about or explained nobody will take credit for it someone did not like him who was this prson

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

GMC is absolutely the best DT in the NFL.
Anyone who knows anything about Football, knows that.
    He’s far superior to Suh

It’s a damn crime, how this team has wasted years of his career, with lousy coaches and the worst GM in the history of Football.
Dom ought to be horse whipped

Hopefully, next years draft will bring the DE that SHOULD have been working
With McCoy for the past several years

I really want the Bucs to advance in the Playoffs, with GMC still leading the defense
    They better hurry!!

  14. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @David

Agree pressure right up the middle disrupts the QB far more than off the edge.

This is why I hope our middle three OL this season can hold up for Fameis.

“Damn that former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik!”

LOL – The Dominik apologist slips in a little plug here or there or wherever he can…. Nice Try.

I would have drafted GMC #3 – Joes would have – my mother would have – Robert and Barry and mariotaJoe would have – sooooo what’s your point?

Does anyone need reminding of – (A) – how bad our OLine has been the last 2 years? Probably not.

If a GM (B) -does not draft any Olinemen (20% of the total bodies on a football team) in his ENTIRE FIVE YEAR TENURE as GM – do ya think there might be a correlation between A and B ?

SMH and LOL at the never ending “rockstar” lovefest round these parts. It defies logic. Dude was a TERRIBLE talent evaluator – period. What is a GM’s main responsibility? To identify and acquire talented football players.

What does 30-70 say? What does only having 8 players still on the team that were drafted by Dominick 2,3,4,5 and 6 years ago say? And not ever drafting any Olinemen? – that’s the icing on the cake. Case closed – Dom was a BAD GM. He was creative with contracts – I will give him that – but a decent capologist does not a good General Manager make….

You’re comical Joe. You really are. Dominik hits on the #3 pick in the draft and he’s a “great” GM. Lol. Taking McCoy was a no brainer!

And it was your rockstar “GM” btw that let Michael Bennett walk away “for no good reason.”
