Peterson Chatter Is Just That

Adrian Peterson and the Bucs is just empty chatter. So far.

Adrian Peterson and the Bucs is just empty chatter. So far.

A few days ago, Bucs fans went gaga when Adrian Peterson’s agent, Ben Dogra, post a photo of himself on Facebook wearing a Bucs cap with a Peterson jersey behind him, with a caption hinting of action brewing.

All of a sudden, Bucs fans, after ordering their Jameis Winston jerseys, began shopping a Bucs’ Adrian Peterson jersey.

After Dogra’s photo appeared, Joe texted a trusted Bucs source who told him there was nothing significant about the photo and suggested it was a marketing ploy for Dogra’s clients who attended the University of Oklahoma. Dogra also is Gerald McCoy’s agent, and McCoy and Peterson are Sooners.

Anyway, this wishful thinking of Peterson to the Bucs found its way into Pat Yasinskas’ Twitter mailbag. The ESPN scribe writes it’s just a whole lot of talk.

@PatYazESPN: At this point, it’s nothing but speculation about the Bucs having interest in Adrian Peterson. He obviously would provide a big boost for a running game that wasn’t very good last season. But the cost of getting Peterson would be high in two regards. The Vikings are likely to want at least a first-round pick. The Bucs aren’t about to give up this year’s first pick. Even giving up next year’s first-round choice is probably more than the Bucs are willing to part with. Then, there’s the matter of paying Peterson’s large contract. At best, the Bucs landing Peterson is a long shot.

At that proposed price, Joe says, “pass.”

Peterson is 30. The data showing running backs falling off the cliff at 30 is both damning and alarming. Sure, there are exceptions, but at best Peterson is a rent-a-player for three years, max. Is that really worth a first round pick? No way.

Joe would be willing to give up some third-day picks, or maybe a third-rounder next year, and maybe a player (Doug Martin). No more. But it sure would be nice to have a stud running back behind young Jameis.

This was nothing more than agent gamesmanship, no more, no less. It get the people riled up and draws heat in much the same way the Russell=Winston false paradigm does. These story lines keep the hits on the websites accumulating and the talk radio airwaves buzzing.
The draft can’t get here soon enough.

Couldnt agree more Joe. But, what if one of our RBs turns it on this year? Defenses were able to control the line of scrimage on us last season. They did not fear our QB, so they did not fear anything else. Im hoping a fresh arm behind center that makes the best throws possible will loosen things up for our running game. Not to mention, with all the other holes on the team like LT?, G?, C?, S issues, a #3 WR, etc….. i dont think we can fix it all in one off season, but we do have the bodies at RB to try and limp through this year.

  3. Larry Says:

What if we had picked Peterson #4 instead of Gaines Adams? That was my hope back then!

  4. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

I was a huge AD fan wanting to draft him…all the board chatter was that would mean Carnell williams was a wasted draft pick….I’d argue no….I was also a HUGE Cadillac fan too….first player jersey I ever bought for myself, I don’t like wearing ,basically a hot plastic bag to games

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We are living in denial…..we keep adding and dreamiing about better ruinning backs…WRs, TEs….new overall #1 QB and we build the Oline with late round picks and over-the-hill trades….

I put this on under a comment 2 days ago from profootball talk:
A restricted free agent, Rainey was tendered a one-year, $1.542 million contract.
the bucs wouldn’t sign Peterson because they just resigned rainey. Peterson wouldn’t come to a team that has the worst o-line in the league. he would not have any holes to run through

  7. j lynch Says:

Maybe you could get Peterson to discipline young jameis to keep him in line

Exactly………why would this prevent them from going after Peterson?

  9. Buc1987 Says:

This is for those posters that whine about Joe or any poster that mention’s Winston as if he will be here before the pick is already in.

Pat Yasinskas is already doing it too. While going over draft needs for the Bucs.

“Slot receiver. The Bucs want to give Winston every possible chance at success.”– Pat Yasinskas

People in the know, know. They know a helluva lot more than any of us on this site…

Buc1987.. do I detect a tinge of uncertainty as the draft nears? Join the crowd.

  11. T in Orlando Says:

The timing of the Rainey signing has nothing to do with interest in Peterson, the Bucs extended that RFA offer before Free Agency Started this year, almost two months ago.

I don’t think we should go after Peterson, unless he can be had for a 4th or less. That being said, I can’t see why the Vikings would only take a 4th Round pick for him. In other words, Peterson will not be a Buc.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37 ..none what-so-ever. Like I’ve said over the past week. While most fans will be on the edge of their seat, I’ll be as cool as a cucumber before the pick is called off. I’ve come to grips with the pick a long time ago and the pick IS Jameis.

    Not even Lovie scares me.

  13. JMan Says:

Why would we grafter Peterson? Hes not worth his contract. If we cut it down and only straight up traded him for Doug Martin then maybe. I’m glad we aren’t stupid enough to lose picks a’la Revis

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Just know that Peterson will make a run at 2,000 yards this season. That’s a lot more certain than Fameis being the next Tom Brady.

Peterson is rested and he is highly motivated.

I agree however on the draft picks. Peterson’s salary does not concern me, but I wouldn’t give up a #1 draft pick.

Buccfan37 talking tinge of uncertainty. Check it,it’still not too late for a friendly wager.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Peterson isn’t worth more than a third rounder, and even that the Bucs cannot afford to give.

The only deal that might be worth doing is to offer Martin for Peterson, and the teams split the salaries.

Peterson has had legal issues. He is getting up there in years and MIGHT have a couple years left in the tank. He simply is not worth the asking price.

Personally, I’m all for keeping things in the RB stable exactly as they are. Fix the offensive line and our backs will produce. It’s that simple.

I heard Ian Beckles suggest we draft a RB in round 2 this year, instead of OL or DL. That right there proves he is an idiot.

  17. WS99 Says:

Look if rivers is worth the #1 overall pick then Peterson is worth our entire draft. Peterson is no mortal man n with a year of to rest he’s coming back with a vengeance.

  18. chipbuc Says:

The Bucs are acting like they dont want to activate the option in Martins 5th year of the contract, so if the Vikings want to trade Peterson they will need a running back. I can think of worst RBs to replace him with. Throw in a 3rd or 4th and its a pretty fair deal, win win for everybody!!!!

  19. foghead407 Says:

This years 4th and next years 5th or 6th. Throw in martin if u want

The salary doesn’t concern me either since I’m not paying it but the Glazers may care a bit about that. With that said, I do think Peterson is worth the salary but not the absurd compensation Minnesota wants. The Vikes and the whole NFL world think they have Peterson by the balls but I beg to differ. If Peterson sits out which he could do as I’m sure he’s not hurting for money, then the Vikes are immediately garbage. Teddy will be running for his life and there will be no ground game to speak of unless they draft a RB in the 1st round. Even then, it’s not the same as AP in the backfield. The Vikes could easily see the light within 3 days. If AP is dead set on getting out of Minny, then the Vikes may want to think twice about getting some compensation instead of having no AP and nothing to show for it.
