Not Moved By Silly Season

April 11th, 2015

silly

In NFL circles, the term “silly season” represents all the lies, planted lies and espionage that surface after evals of prospects are complete and there is too much down time before the draft.

Silly season began this week for Bucs fans.

First it was the total and complete freakout when NFL draft guru Mike Mayock demoted Jameis Winston to his No. 2 quarterback, all while saying he still fully expected Tampa Bay to draft him No. 1.

Then there was the suggestion that Bucs co-owner Darcie Glazer Kassewitz may be uncomfortable with the Bucs drafting Winston.

The third salvo that drove Bucs fans off a cliff came yesterday, when Winston’s lawyer David Cornwell suggested Winston is like a lot of guys coming out of college: too immature for the NFL lifestyle.

Let’s just say none of these stories were enough to move the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the The Tampa Tribune. He took to Twitter to mock silly season.

The thing that got Joe most was how fans went bonkers over Mayock’s demotion even though Mayock himself admitted the Bucs’ plans to draft Winston wouldn’t change. You would have thought a witchdoctor put a pall over Winston’s head by the reaction.

But that is what silly season evokes from most reasoned fans: Overreaction. There simply is too much time. Expect more nonsense the next three weeks.

Yet the folks who actually pay for tickets overwhelmingly want Winston. As do readers of this here site.

earlier in the week it was said on this site that the luxury suite/ club level people met and all cheered at a Winston video being shown when lovie met with them. there were only 200-300 people in attendance. many were florida state (FSU)fans. according to several people I know that were in attendance.

  5. port richey george Says:

out of 50,000+ seats you are using the applause of 200-300 people in attendance????

I live in podunk Port Richey too, off Regency.

I’ve got 4 season ticket packages sold just to my home alone, if they draft Jameis “the one we’ve been waiting for” Winston. Or The Chosen One whichever you prefer.

My brother(FSU alum) lives in Sarasota and he wants 5 season ticket packages, if they draft Jameis “The Chosen One” Winston.

28 loooong mofo years I’ve waited for The Chosen One. 19 more days of waiting.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

George had season tickets last season. Poor guy.

George did you forget just how empty that stadium was last season? It looked to be the worst in decades….

The Chosen One will make it all better!

since no links are allowed here… you can still vote for mariota or Winston.

george…clear your browser cache (easy to do) and you can vote for Mariota as many times as you want to. Over and over and over again….

  11. Pelbuc Says:

This franchise has been so bad for so long that the idea of Winston gives fans hope. If the kid can mature and dedicate himself, then all the Bucs brain trust need to do is give him a somewhat competent Oline. At least he’ll have an OC this year. Now let’s hope L&L know what players to draft.

41% of a croud can definitely sound like a roar.

  15. JBuc Says:

In all seriousness, who gives a sh&t about what fan poll says? Especially when people like Port Richey George, SuperSpud, and Barry get a vote.

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston will charge up the Bucs fan base with drive, determination and winning. Mariota puts me to sleep, zzzzz.

  17. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

    87,
You’re silly…. I sincerely hope this joker doesn’t bust if we pick him. I feel like he’s more than likely going to bust, but I desperately hope I’m wrong.

  18. Buxfan Says:

John Clayton said it this morning on his radio show. “You will hear all kinds of silly rumors before the draft”.

Bucs will trade #1 pick for Drew Bees
Bucs trade down, get Browns 2 first round picks and Johnny Manziel.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

    The Chosen One…TM Joe..no stealing!

  20. Stanglassman Says:

Shaz and I should get a byline for this article.

  21. Martinii Says:

I agree Joe, 100 percent. I am a Winston fan and have been for the past few months. Short of breaking news and film showing Jameis creating a major felony I won’t believe anything until the commissioner steps to the podium on April 30th. If there is anytime during the offseason that we should step away from our devices it is the next few weeks.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

“If there is anytime during the offseason that we should step away from our devices it is the next few weeks.”

Martinii…I agree and have tried to do this, but here I am again.

I agree….. this is the worst time of the year now that March Madness is over for those of us who can’t watch Baseball. Three weeks of nothingness sports wise.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    UF Alum,
    Watch The Masters tournament.
There’s a new young phenom named Jordan Spieth.
Good stuff, if you like golf.

    :: Silly season is here::

Between now and draft day. Treat almost all all NFL Draft articles like you just saw Spock walk by with a beard. That’s right folks! Bizarro World BS is amongst us.

Whatever you read about the draft, flip it 180 degrees.

Put on your waders and buckle those chin straps boys. We are going to wade thru a mountain of editorial excrement.

  26. Dan Says:

Dead serious question for the Joes. If Mariota is the Bucs pick, will you guys still ride Winston’s jock and blame every loss on not taking Winston? Or will you get behind your new QB and support him? Let’s not debate the likelihood of it happening.

  27. Dan Says:

Once upon a time, a team with the first pick debated between a National Champion QB and Heisman winning RB. At the end of the college football season, those were the only two players talked about going #1. A couple weeks before the draft rumors began swirling. The RB wasn’t good running up the middle, the QB was too dumb (leaked wonderlic score). People started saying there may be a dark horse. A couple days before the draft the Houston Texans shocked everyone and signed DE Mario Williams.

Point of the story, sometimes those “smokescreens” aren’t smokescreens at all.

  28. Dan Says:

For the record, drafting Winston doesn’t scare me. Nor does drafting Mariota. What does scare me is Lovie Smith with the fate of the franchise for the next 5 years in his hands with this pick. Just give us A QB!

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Which Joe is going to be at The Best Damn Party in town? Little Joe or Big Joe?

I might scoot over to Clearwater from Ray Jay after they call off The Chosen One’s name. Perhaps some of you will want to punch my teeth in by then. It’s okay I’m still a wicked fast runner.

Can we get Joe’s autograph? lol

  30. WalkdaPlank Says:

Who cares what the talking heads THINK with only weeks to the draft? Unless they’ve got some breaking news to REPORT about a potential draft pick, I couldn’t care less.

BTW, 87 you’re a few days early. Let yourself out on good behavior?

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Walk….see thread below this one. Blame it on Port Richey George. If he would have just gone fishing or went to the beach on this lovely Saturday. I still be holding back.

“Just when I thought I was out……some IDIOT pulls me back in…”

  33. UF Alum that likes a few Noles here. Says:

Just a suggestion from an older Bucs fan. No offense in any way

  34. RustyRhinos Says:

87 You did stay away for a bit. welcome back.

I’m ready for our 34th pick to be more frequently discussed. OT OG DE?

  35. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

I am season ticket holder I want Winston

  36. Buc1987 Says:

RustyRhinos…at this point anything OL will make me happy with the 2nd pick and the 3rd unless they can get someone in FA. If so go DE in the 3rd if there’s one that warrants the pick. If not keep build the O-line anyways. It’s a offensive league nowadays anyways. I mean do you remember the Ravens game? Sheesh Flacco got that ball out of there in like 3 seconds. I don’t know what kind of line we can build that’s fast enough to stop that anyways.
Ahhhh thanks man that was refreshing talking about something else.

Protect The Chosen One at all costs…

GatorBuc…I’m old too ya know. I only act and dress like I’m 16. I finally stopped getting carded for liquor about 2 years ago though. I look young for my age. My whole family does actually.

I’m just getting tired of the merry-go-round like everyone else….this is ridiculous, waiting until the end of April. Not so bad when you have the 6th pick, but the 1st is like torture waiting. Then you have to deal with some really dumb comments and then you make a few of your own here and there. It gets old.

To tell you the truth. I think if Lovie had it his way, they wouldn’t be drafting a QB at all IMO. Does it scare me for the draft? No I think he’s going to get a QB shoved down his throat, like it or not with this pick. The NFL is set up for situations like this. Our time is now. We’ve waited way too long. What’s another 18 more days? Yikes 18 more days….it’s almost here guys!

  37. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Dave Pear

YES!!! The Masters is awesome and Spieth could help revive golf in the wake of Tigers meltdown. Speaking of which he played well too. So now we get to look at the future rivalry between Spieth and McIlroy with Tiger also now back in the mix.

But the REAL great action took place at Amalie. OUR Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Bruins and have home ice advantage for the playoffs.

Again if only Jeff Vinik was allowed to own the Bucs we’d be able to emulate the Pats and Pack and other perennial good NFL teams with great organizations.

    GO BOLTS!!!!

  38. UF Alum that likes a few Noles here. Says:

You know I luv ya in the “e”sense. I have come to the belief that we are taking JW and I am cool with this. I am not able to be a ” Guy that can spend bunches of money to buy club seats” or whatever parallel stuff. I live in Montana. I am ready for JW or MM. I am out of the Trade Down Crowd. That should tell you someting

  39. UF Alum that likes a few Noles here. Says:

I completely agree SPBF. I should have answered Pear earlier. I am loving the whole thing. Most of all how he shot three bogeys on his last nine but had 5 birdies.

  40. Andres Says:

Winston’s Gruden QB camp sold me on NOT drafting this guy. It’s a train wreck waiting to happen. Winston has the mentality of a gnat. Staring down his favorite receivers is eerily freeman-esk. for a QB so “smart” that’s not a good sign of a leader when he chooses friends over wins. He reeks of entitlement. I wouldn’t trust him at all. It’s apperent he won’t handle the pressure of the NFL. He’s that sexy chick that’s hot in bed but too crazy to marry and bring home to mom. You can’t build a franchise around this guy who wants a good time more than wins. He’ll learn its a business all too soon, get disillusioned, fade to oblivion aka Vince young, freeman, etc…

  41. Brion Says:

He is Byron Leftwich. I can’t understand how noone sees it.

  42. UF Alum that likes a few Noles here. Says:

Sorry..Ive been busy. I guess Spieth actually shot 7 birdies in his Worst round of a Saturday Masters.
Geeeesh. And some of us have to work for a living 🙂

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    Andres Says :

“You can’t build a franchise around this guy who wants a good time more than wins.”

There’s a difference between opinion and fact. You have this opinion and you’re wrong about this kid. This kid has tremendous drive to become one of the greats.

So therefore you have no idea wth you’re talking about.

  44. BB Christina Says:

No Winston No 4 club seats lol oh and I’m a Gator fan so stop with the only FSU fans were in attendance pah leez

  45. fritz50 Says:

“I sincerely hope this joker doesn’t bust if we pick him”

Well, duh, …..Like this does’t apply to every pick ever made, first, last, and everywhere in between. Sure, we’d love for every pick to be a home run, but honestly, it just ain’t gonna happen. The ones doing the picking are human, the ones being picked are human, and the talking heads spouting off are all human. The whole thing is a train wreck in waiting. Sure, some people and organizations are better than the rest, it’s figuring how to get from the bottom to the top of the scale is the hard part. And that doesn’t factor in the effects of good, and bad Coaching, once the pick gets into camp. We’ll just have to wait & see what happens when camp, and the season, starts.

  46. Andres Says:

    @Buc1987
winston’s good time always smiling laughing I’m cute act will wear out after training camp and that rah rah college crap will do nothing after a 2 game losing streak when his “friends” aren’t so friendly. We’ll be left with an OK QB that can’t look off safeties, with a leftwich windup and just wants to get the ball to his friends. he’ll become a smirking joking giggling cheerleading interception machine that will make NFC south corners look very good and get very rich.
