Father Dungy’s Words Fall Flat

April 30th, 2015
His words were not heeded.

His words were not heeded.

No person pushed Bucs coach Lovie Smith to draft Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota more than Father Dungy.

With his track record of quarterbacks, Joe has no idea how Dungy all of a sudden became a modern day Bill Walsh when it came to the game’s most important position.

Every chance Father Dungy had, he pushed the envelope for the Bucs to get Mariota. Lovie even admitted to Joe at the NFL owners meetings that Dungy was hounding him..

Joe is confident becaue Father Dungy’s son played with Mariota at Oregon, that Father Dungy had a relationship with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. That’s what drove it.

Well, those words and advice went in one of Lovie’s ears and out the other. When Lovie was asked tonight how much pressure he felt to pick Mariota because of Father Dungy’s sermons, Lovie quipped:

“When it’s third-and-short, I’m not calling for outside help.”

to supersam, phillip, mike from clean whatever, and port richey george…

    IN YO FACE!!!

  2. jb Says:

You can’t blame Dungy from talking him up. He knows the kid. I’m just glad Lovie wasn’t listening.

  3. Andrew 1 Says:

also forgot eric the not so wise man. I think everyone who wasn’t in denial, pretty much knew the pick was going to be Winston.

  4. Posey99 Says:

Better let these boys play some games before you start saying “told you so’s”

  5. WS99 Says:

Both these kids should have a great career. We took the bigger risk with the bigger rewards. If winner can win like he wins we will win so many wins. Can’t wait.

When QB advice is needed, lock Dungy in the dungeon.

    So did his playoff appearances.

  9. Louis Friend Says:

Dungy always wanted guys who follow the straight and narrow path. Winston didn’t, and probably doesn’t. I really think it’s that simple when it comes down to it.

  10. LargoBuc Says:

Lovie’s career is on the line. He has to do what he feels is best for his football team. And he stayed solid along with Licht and everyone else and choose the best quarterback available. He knew he was wrong about Mccown. He paid a steep price for it. He moved on and knew he had to bring Jameis in. No other quarterback in the draft of free agency put Tampa in a better position to compete this fall than Jameis.
And for all of you that are no longer Buc fans, screw you! Go root for the Pats or whatever snow bird team gets you off! Dont come back when we’re much improved next year either!

It is Amazing that anyone thought the pick wouldn’t be Winston.

Tony Dungy – The Godfather of BUC BALL. Run, Run, Pass, Punt.

Exactly. I’m not sure why this town is so enamored with Buc ball.

  18. Aceofaerospace Says:

Wow, calm down UFCGUY. I’m a Mariota guy, yet I don’t consider myself an idiot. Winston is a Buc, Mariota is a Titan. Time will tell who the idiots are. Neither has played a down in the NFL yet. Go Bucs. It doesn’t matter what shouldve been done anymore. It’s done. I want Winston to be the best Qb in Bucs history.

  19. Skyline Crew Says:

Dungy just wanted the Bucs to take the best QB. We didn’t. This season will determine if Winston was a good pick or not.

  20. Pat Says:

Yup, I’m a Mariota guy. I quipped with with my coworker last year that in joking gesture that we are so bad we might get Jameis. And that was when he went on a leave of absence to join the military. Fast forward to today, we had a business town hall meeting and I happened to sit next to another coworker that I met for the 1st time. He happens to be a Dolphins fan, but also FSU grad. He told me that Jameis will not let you down. He will be all in for the team. This is really surreal to me….but let us now move on, and steer the ship away from the iceberg ahead. GO BUCS!!!

  21. jfat Says:

So we’re going to pile on the coach that put the Bucs on the map because he had a difference of opinion about who to take? Only thing a lot of what I’m reading now is missing is a “Nanny-Nanny-Boo-Boo”. Jameis is the pick, congrats to those who wanted him and thought he would be the guy all along…being douches about it isn’t going to make others warm up to him any quicker.

  22. charactermatters Says:

Getting the player you wanted doesn’t mean you are right. With that being said, here’s to praying I am wrong! Grow up Jameis! Don’t waste that talent.

  23. Eric Says:

6 points in the championship game…..

    Had enough of Dungy myself.

And Chucky too, couldn’t show a good highlight for Jameis had to show a pick.

    Screw those guys and BSPN.

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Dungy’s about the last (ex)NFL HC I would take QB advice from.

Wasn’t he basically told to stay the hell out of the way of what was happening on Offense in Indianapolis?

  25. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

It no longer matters which player we wanted 2 hours and 40 minutes ago, the pick has been made and as bewildering as it is to those of us that were in “denial” that they picked Winston over Mariota it’s time to move forward and hope Jameis lives up to the hype. The Bucs absolutely need him to, and we fans have certainly had our fair share of losing over the years…we deserve some winning football.

  26. erikISNTsoWISEman Says:

Wait – I wasnt calling for Mariota. It was that clown Erik

  27. Phillip Says:

    @Andrew 1

Huh? What is in my face? That we drafted Winston? I don’t even have a problem with the kids off the field issues..

Did I want him on the team? No because I wanted Mariota or trade back and get Hundley.. Am I gonna root for the kid? Yes I’d never wish ill will towards anyone in their profession.. Grow up scrub
