Report: Bucs Players Wanted Jameis

April 30th, 2015
licht and jameis

Bucs players lobbied GM Jason Licht for Jameis Winston “last season.”

A rather stunning tidbit of background information on the Bucs’ pursuit of Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston was let loose by NFL Network last night.

It seems it wasn’t just front office personnel and coaches of the Bucs who were smitten by Winston.

It seems, so too were Bucs players. For months.

Well-respected reporter Judy Battista did a stand-up at One Buc Palace, as national sports networks are literally working around the clock at there because the Bucs hold the No. 1 overall pick in tonight’s draft.

Battista, after a chat she claimed to have with Bucs general manager Jason Licht, said Bucs players were texting Licht “last season” to bring in Winston.

“Last season,” as in before the Bucs were finished with their NFL-worst 2-14 record, which sealed the Chase for Jameis.

That just goes to show you players were as fed up with turnover-prone Josh McCown as Bucs fans. And what is it Buccaneers — professionals — saw in Winston that the trade-down crowd doesn’t?

For the cynics here, three players on the 2014 Bucs roster played at the University of Florida, but none were from Florida State (fullback Lonnie Pryor was cut before the season began).

  1. Mariota Joe Says:

“Last season” as in before we knew everything we now know about Infamous.

  2. AC Says:

It is stupid that there are only 3 players on last years team that are from the state of Florida. No wonder the Bucs were 2-14. There is so much talent from the state universities we should way more than that.

  3. jw to tampa Says:

Mariota joe. This is your last day for all of us to listen to your crap. 13 hlurs and jameis comes to town :)))

  4. AstuteFL Says:

So..the players don’t buy season tickets or merchandise, the FANS do. The players are employees, as an employee, you don’t tell your boss who to hire. Also, maybe if they played a little harder for their own QB, they wouldn’t have to draft another…and another…and another….

  5. Stanglassman Says:

I’ll enjoy watching all the myths the MM crowd perpetuated over the last few months get knocked down one by one. I’ll mark this one down as the locker room cancer slash grown men won’t put up with his cocky leadership style.

Joes- Maybe you could lock out new screen names today? Anyone who wants to post should only under their original name.

  6. Kalind Says:

No FSU players and 3 Gators? And we wonder why we were 2-14…

  7. Stanglassman Says:

Last season as in after the Saints game. I know My cousin bought a pair of season tickets right after the last game and told me it was because Jameis was coming to town.

  8. Salty Shredder Says:

Mike Evans and Jameis Winston have already spent a night together in DTSP spraying champagne all over scantily clad women. Unless that was a test of some sorts. Ole Rodg will be announcing Winston’s name to the Bucs tonight.

  9. Dreambig Says:

Mariota Joe – Whats your new name going to be tomorrow? Gonna go route for another team? If you just became aware of media coverage of Winston (good and bad) at the end of last season, you have been living under a rock.

  10. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think there will be deals to be had where the Bucs can pick up another draft choice or two….or even a couple of veteran players…and still get one of the QBs they covet. Sometime late this afternoon the offers will be flying hot and heavy and we will learn what’s going on.

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I been shouting for months all last season was a tank job for Jamies WINSton. This article confirms it.

  12. MM-ARMY Says:

The day of my selection has arrived…

JW to Tampa/87…..only one more day of “hearing your crap.” lol love how that works both ways..

RE article: since when in the NFL do the players have any influence on the draft??? Yeah never…unless you are a HOF QB…which last time I checked we have never had.

    We welcome Marcus to Tampa!!!

    MM-ARMY STRONG

  13. Keepitreal Says:

They are already changing screen names. Mariota is just one of the ignorant few left. Go Bucs!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t know about you…..but is anyone else kind of worn out by this off-season…..now the excitement actually begins. It’s always great to be a Buc fan but today is one of the really great days!!!

  15. Dave Says:

@assastuteofFL if u r a real fan of the Bucs you don’t stop buying tickets because they don’t draft one player you don’t like, typical U of Fl cry baby. You draft the best player that’s Jameis WIN A TON

  16. Pickgrin Says:

The looooooong wait is finally over. TODAY is the day the Bucs get a franchise Quarterback.

Jameis Winston is exactly what this team needs. A fearless and passionate leader with more football knowledge in his brain than any 21 year old on the planet who can throw the football 50+ yards with perfect touch.

This young man will bring more excitement to Tampa Bay on Sundays than any single player this team has EVER had.

Suck it haters! If you can’t get on board with Jameis – then just go away.

  17. Jacko101 Says:

I spoke to Lavonte and Gerald and they said not true … But who knows

  18. Clodhopper Says:

You guys must work for arseholes.

An employer is not obligated to listen to the employees, but and employer that don’t want or appreciate input from employees is an arrogant dik.

Filling out an application and under “references” you never put down some one who already works there? Who am I kidding. Mariota fans dont work at places that actually check references.

  19. Espo Says:

    The suspense is killing me

  20. Stanglassman Says:

I kinda respect the MM crowd & trade downers who stuck to their guns dispute the writing on the wall and facts. I just really don’t like the squishes who just said enough on both ways in order to say they were correct either way. You guys are definitely trying to Roll and Hard Six tonight though.

Thanks for the laugh…when was the last time players were told the pick b4 a draft…..never.

I have said this b4..whoever they select I will support. Its called being a true bucs fan and adult, which some of you on here are struggling with. I root (not route) for the team. Go BOLTS-RAYS-BUCS!

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Been thinking bout this for years and now it’s finally here.

  26. kaput Says:

That story also show that NOBODY in that locker has faith in Glennon.

I’m glad today is the last day of the Mariota clan. A lot of user names will be changed quietly over the next few days, huh? All those guys that said they’d be done with the Bucs will be in mourning for two or three weeks, and then they’ll get back onboard the Bucs train.

For the first time in a long time I feel really good about where the Bucs are heading.

    Now go spend some money.

  27. MaHaBoNe.D Buc Says:

    @Stanglassman

nice Battlestar Galactica quote thrown in there!!

  28. TheShaz Says:

Twelve more hours and this issue will be settled.

I don’t mind reading other people’s opinion, but clearly some are in need of a soft couch and a therapist.

Whatever the decision get behind it like a fan of the team and of the game.

I would take either QB, but prefer Jameis.

  29. bucs4lyfe Says:

so they did tank the last game lol L&L evaluated glennon when they first got to tampa and said he wasn’t the guy then changed their minds…..after that disaster last year the bucs made sure they’d get first crack at Winston no leonard Williams or mariota

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

As a fan….it’s frustrating because you don’t often get your way….but you try to trust the team leaders to do the right thing. That is the case for me here….I have always preferred Mariota but was very open to Winston and over the months have become comfortable with him going forward.
This is probably a bad analogy…but its like having one of your children marrying someone that you questioned…in the end…you have to support the decision and hope for the best.
I will root for and strongly support Winston because that is the way I am with all of our players.
It’s up to him to earn the continued support from me….

NO that they took our starters out of the game remember….in what world could a bunch of back ups handle drew brees and a sean payton offense

You don’t know, and I don’t know who the Bucs will pick. We shall see……

TBBF, I’m exhausted from this offseason too. I can’t wait for tonight and the next 2 days to be over with so we know who is on this team and who we can root for finally! I prefer Jameis but I’m not sold that he’ll be great. Time will tell. Go Bucs!

  40. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol…..im just happy to finally have a high first round pick at quarterback someone who HAS to deal with high expectations…..theres no more lets give him time see if he develops no way, a 1st overall pick MUST develop while playing as a day one starter. if blake bortles can come in after 2 games, matthew Stafford and tannehill can start day one this kid better be an instant starter. you don’t draft someone in the first round at any position you think has to sit and learn the game unless you just won the superbowl and you have a pro bowl quarterback

  41. Gator N Bucs Says:

Hey Joe, how come the title says “wanted” as in past tense.?

  42. Patrick in VA Says:

I’m really looking forward to seeing if Dorial Green Beckham is still available tomorrow morning. If so, I would be happy to see someone move up to grab him and give us some extra 2nd and 3rd round picks.

  43. robert 9 Says:

whole lot of new screen names come tomorrow!

  44. WalkdaPlank Says:

Joe, may I ask what brand of romantic scented candles and tissues you are going to use for viewing the draft tonight? 😉

  45. bob 9 Says:

    you got that right!

  46. Patrick in VA Says:

@Gator N Bucs – One of the flimsiest stretches I’ve seen in a while. The article makes it clear that it’s talking about how far back the players have been lobbying for Winston to come. It does not imply anywhere that that has changed. It’s merely highlighting that this has been something they’ve wanted for a long time.

Try again. You’ve only got a few hours left to hang on. Don’t stop believing.

  47. robert 9 Says:

you kiddin? I’m sure joe is stocked with jergens, tissues and beer for a week!

  48. BuccaneEric Says:

Some team will trade up to #33 if he’s still there or the Titans will just take him. I’m pulling for O Line in round 2 but he’d be hard for me to pass on if he’s there. I’d demand a 3 or kick rocks!

  49. flhillbilly Says:

    #5

  50. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    Finally, Judgment day.

Sweet, sweet Judgment day. How have I been waiting for thee. For a select few, a late dinner of crow awaits.

  51. Stanglassman Says:

    Wrong again Mariota Joe!
Character? You are the one with that problem not Jameis. We just think you are a righteous A-hole who believes you can judge a person without even doing any routinary research on the guy much less walked even one step in his shoes.

  52. Gator N Bucs Says:

Patrick you can stop harassing me just because Gators is in my name. I write for another Sports site and I just wrote an article that has us taking Winston.
My comment was aimed at Joe. Not you or any other Winstonite

  53. P'cola Buc Says:

…..as just sung on WDAE…..my version of the NFL draft and Jameis Winston.

Sung to the tune of the Bugs Bunny Theme Song: “This is it”

” This is it, take the stage
Jameis Winston is all the rage
He needs no combines or pro days no more
His future is all in store

    Be the pick, be number1
Come to Tampa to dazzle and stun
    Forget now Andrew Luck
    Cuz Jameis Winston’s a Buc”!

  54. bucs4lyfe Says:

look at that photo of licht and Winston……the pick is in and he’s already wearing buc gear, even trolled another team by wearing buc gear at their facility

  55. Bucman0620 Says:

I think the decision to tank last year was made way before the last game. That being the reason they didn’t let Glennon play any more than two games, because they would have ended up winning one to two more games with him rather than McClown

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You would think with today’s computer imaging…they could create a virtual Winston walking across the stage and recieving the #1 Buc jersey from Goodell….how cool would that be?

I’m glad bot Mariota & Winston are sitting this out together….takes some heat off both of them.

  57. Patrick in VA Says:

@Eric – Perhaps, but I’ve seen that there are a number of analysts (for what it’s worth) that have projected the Titans taking a receiver with one the picks taken for the trade down from #2, assuming it happens. If that’s the case, I doubt they’d take Beckham after taking a WR in the first.

I’m hoping we can get something there but you’re probably right.

  58. Supersam Says:

Haha I call BS on that, so you mean to tell me guys like Vincent Jackson Doug Martin and Logan Mankins were telling our GM that we need to tank this season so we can draft a quarterback who at the time was telling everyone he was staying in school to play baseball!?!? Hahahaha this just tells me even more that the pick will be Mariota. I especially love the one Gil Arcia tweeted lastnight about his “source” confirming hat the players have in told the pick is Winston, which Matt Miller confirmed to be total BS. It’s that sources guy again hahaha

Interesting FACT: the Bucs sent out an email with a survey in it. The survey had questions concerning who you would like to see the Bucs pick or trade down.

  66. tmaxcon Says:

  67. Nick Says:

I’m going to miss you, Barry. This is truly a sad day for all of us that will miss your venom and random non-sequiturs.

  68. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Players I would be happy with…
These are drawn from my wish lists that I previously posted, with a few more added. These are not in order of preference.

Hopefully, the Bucs will call some of these names, because I believe these players will fit the Tampa schemes perfectly.

    Quarterback Position
    Jameis Winston
    Marcus Mariota

Either would make me happy, long as we take one.

    Offensive Tackle
    Brandon Scherff
    Jake Fisher
    Austin Shepherd

I think Jake Fisher would best fit the Bucs, but the others are good too.

    Offensive Guard
    A. J. Cann
    Daryl Williams
    Mitch Morse*
    Daryl Williams

The “*” means the player is able to fit in other positions as well.

    Offensive Center
    Cameron Erving
    Mitch Morse*
    Ali Marpet

Not much chance of getting Erving, but Mitch Morse might well be available for us later.

    Offensive Wide Reciever/Returner
    Kenny Bell

He’s a speedster and has returned a couple punter for TDs in college. He might be the answer for the slot or kick returns.

    Tight End/Halfback/Fullback
    Nick O’Leary

I know, on the surface, we have enough tight ends, but I actually see him as our lead blocker and playing in an alstott role.

He has better hands than Alstott did though. Hits hard.

    Defensive Inside Linebacker
    Eric Kendricks

I have been pushing this guy out there for months. I’m not at all convinced Carter is the solution at ILB. This guy would be.

He is perfect for the scheme, and though he is ranked lower than a couple others, I believe he will end up being hte best cover 2

    ILB in the draft.

    Defensive End
    Nate Orchard
    Marcus Hardison
    Danielle Hunter

I’ve thought hard about this one. I know other DEs are getting talked up big, but I believe Nate Orchard would be the best fit

for the Bucs that is within reach.

    Punter
    Spencer Roth

Michael Koenen would be worth his check if he were still playing like he once did. While there is a chance he just had a bad

year, he is 32 now and can only get worse. Replacing him would mean saving cap room, and the punting game can get no worse than it has been. Roth is the best punter in the draft, and I think would still be there in round 6.

Gator, your certainly not one of the crazies on here but don’t make it sound like you wrote a positive artical on Winston. Even though the Bucs are about to select one of the two best QBs in the draft, if not the best, you still are projecting everyone in the NFCS to have an A grade except the Bucs. So in your opinion, if the Bucs draft Winston, it will not be a successful first round.

Well, it sucks for you at the places you’ve ever worked in your life, but where I’ve worked, if the team is going to be working directly with a new teamate that may soon to be hired, upper management has ALWAYS spoken with at least a couple memeber from the team to see what they think about a potential new candidate.

  79. WalkdaPlank Says:

Of course Jameis will hold up the jersey when being introduced at OBP, but as far as tonight how I haven’t seen anybody hold up a jersey over the TV. Then again he will be the No.1 pick soo…

  80. Bucman0620 Says:

Well I have stated before and will again. I am hoping for Jameis but would be excited about having Mariota. I even think Koetter can get Glennon to be successful as a starter. What the team needs to do is shore up that O-line and give the ball to a HEALTHY Doug Martin. Sims will fill in nicely to give Martin a breather and Rainey is here just in case one of them goes down again. If we can get a young speedster with good to great hands for the slot in this draft, then next year we can try to find another LARGE receiver to replace VJAX (when he is done for us). Lovie has not had success on the offensive side of the ball too often when it comes to the draft, however the defense that he builds are normally one of the best. Even towards the end of the season last year the numbers say we were one of the best. So I have high expectations this year without changing too much. Just minor tweaks on the defense and let Koetter tell what he needs for the O.

  81. Eric Says:

It is the opposite of what you think Mariota Joe.

The more the bucs learn about the real Winston off the field, the better they like him.

  83. Bucman0620 Says:

Celly you are right. That was a fat finger mistake on my part I meant to put 5, but that is only cause I’m not counting the game in Atlanta (feel like I need to put that in there so someone doesn’t come back with 5 1/2 or 6).

  84. Joe Says:

When will the denial, hate, and other bs end? In just a few hours!

  92. Walter White Says:

It might be a couple weeks or a couple years, but it is simply a matter of WHEN Jameis shows his TRUE colors. He’s been talking a big game and saying all the right things, and people within the Bucs organization have been taking the bait hook line and sinker, but many millions of dollars does not make a poor decision maker into a good decision maker.

I look forward to my next 1-3 years without football. I’ll have so much more time for activities. lol Once it all comes crashing down, and this pick is seen for the ignore-all-obvious-red-flags-and-you-get-what-you-deserve-mess that it is, he’ll be gone along with Lovie – who is mediocre at best/completely incompetent at worst and is another matter of WHEN, not if.

Once both of those poser-nothings are gone, I will return to Buc-dom. Like a flaming phoenix rising from the… uhh well, I’ll probably just buy a new hat or something. Nearly 20 years I’ve been following the Bucs. Thick and thin I can stomach, but not this. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.

  93. Clint Says:

Heard this too Joe but she never clarified if he was talking about Winston or Mariota; Licht never came out and said Winston was that player. If the pick ends up being Winston, this is interesting.

  94. Patrick in VA Says:

There you have it Bucs fans. “You can’t fix it” has shown us the next to last stage in the progression that the anti-Winston crowd will be going through. That is what you call desperation. Casting a hex? Really? Alright Bette Midler, you go ahead and cast a spell on the team. Just prep yourself for the final stage that’s coming in a few hours: defeat.

Folks like these will not transition to acceptance. They’ll pout and poke pins in their Buc voodoo dolls that they make out of hairs that they picked up off the floor of the bus that fell out of the heads of people wearing Buc gear.

  97. Buccaneers Draft Rumblings: Draft Day Has Arrived » The Bay Cave Says:

[…] that general manager Jason Licht was lobbied by his players that the team should go out and draft Winston. Also, Sports Illustrated’s Peter King says Winston to the Bucs is a done […]

  98. Buc1987 Says:

    Ah buh bye Walter White.

    Big Dream
No worries man…you get a grammar pass it was an early AM post…anything can happen pre-coffee.

    🙂 Go BUCS!!

I am staying positive today regardless of the selection and the 1000 half-wit comments that will be made by 87 and the JW bunch that have no class. Class is not something that is bought rather learned and earned.

I still feel strongly that Mariota is the better QB and person for this franchise but will root for the BUCS selection no matter what. For God sakes Lovie…just pick a QB and dont get cutesy Williams from USC.

  100. Dave Says:

I hope when the Bucs draft Winston , they flash to his house and he’s eating crab legs from publix , jumps up on the table and screams I’m the new Bucs qb so all you haters go #%$&! Yourself
