Bucs Do Well At No. 1

April 20th, 2015

Vinny Testaverde arguably was the worst of the No. 1 overall picks by the Bucs, and he played well after leaving Tampa.

Yes, Bucs fans are anxious for the draft to get here. Joe is among them. Can’t wait for Jameis Winston to help get the Bucs turned around.

While Tampa Bay has the No. 1 overall pick, it’s not something a team wants if not acquired by a trade. It means your team is worse than lousy.

In documenting some of the quirks and unknowns of the NFL Draft, Chris Burke of SI.com offered neat nuggets about the Bucs.

1. The Buccaneers last made the draft’s first-overall pick in 1987, selecting quarterback Vinny Testaverde. They selected at No. 1 overall three other times: 1976 as an expansion club (future Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon), 1977 (Ricky Bell) and 1986 (Bo Jackson). Tampa Bay failed to sign Jackson, so Oakland took him in the following year’s draft.

You know, that’s not a bad history of picking first. Ricky Bell was a damned good running back until he got sick. Bo Jackson was a stud, and it was Hugh Culverhouse’s fault he p!ssed off Jackson so much that Jackson didn’t want to play for the Bucs. Testaverde? Meh, did better when he left the Bucs than he ever did in Tampa Bay.

The best draft pick in Bucs history? Hard to argue with Lee Roy Selmon.

This bodes well for next week.

    #5

  2. JameisBucsQB Says:

Ray Perkins destoyed him with the strip down, to build up method.

  3. miken Says:

we took ricky bell over tony dorsett. We traded the number one overall pick for j thompson , then again for Chris chandler. We also traded the Earl Campbell #1 pick for Doug Williams and Jimmie Giles.
No matter who we take here, we will look back in 5 years and say this turned it all around or this is the reason we are still at the bottom.

  4. ATrain Says:

    Breaking News….

Mariota told the Bucs he will wear #5…..

  5. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Jameis playing under Lovie …

    Vinny under Ray Perkins…

  6. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

This will be the last time we pick 1st overall until Winston retires and is enshrined in the hall of fame 😉

  7. Pickgrin Says:

So ONE of the 4 players the Bucs picked at #1 worked out well long term – and you title the article “Bucs DO WELL at #1”.

    That’s an interesting take Joe.

Assuming the Bucs pick Winston #1 – that should help the ratio.

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Thanks for the History Recap Joe. But If I reviewed the -1st overall draft picks (Team by Team) over the past 40years-wouldn’t I get the same positive result?

Is really that hard to miss on the 1st overall pick?

    HAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAAHA!!!!

    Im saving this post…

You better not disappear after he is pulled and Glennon is put in if Winston even makes the bench..

This kid drafted with millions of his pocket will be like cutting Rosanne Barr lose in a cookie factory…

Don’t worry though Johnny will show him all the good party spots.

Yall think his people can keep him undercontrol after he is drafted PLEASE.

They are working 26 hours a day watching this kid so he doesn’t screw up the pay day. His agent, lawyer and dad will all collect and while they count the money Winston will be on the PARTY TRAIN>..

  10. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

    Lol okay ATrain.
I will save your post too, you better not disappear when Winston has us in the playoffs in his second season

    😉

  11. AstuteFL Says:

Hate that Joe is so biased and wants Winston. It should be impartial.

  13. ATrain Says:

    Please Do…

Stop reading all the Media hype and look..

He is a young man who hasn’t been able to control himself. Now I hope he does grow up and is great for the Bucs sake..

I just have a very big doubt..People don’t change that fast..

Time will tell.. AND NO Im not going anywhere…BUCS FAN HERE…

  14. you can't fix it Says:

Joe, The only reason you don’t let me post on this site is because I like Mariota and I hate hearing about Winston. He will be trouble for the Buc’s once he receive his million’s and they will dump him for a 5 round pick in 2016 . Then fans will be baging there heads again lol. I mean the one’s that are left in the stands….Mariota or trade down is the answer, also all you FSU FANS GO JUMP IN TAMPA BAY !!!!!!!

  15. miken Says:

@astutefl… it is his website, he can put his opinions up. I mean, i don’t like winston and think he is a mix of freeman and culpeper, but I really can’t take all the crying anymore about I hate the fsu qb and fsu fan are biased. Both qbs have about a 50% chance of being average or bust so we will see

  16. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

What a joke. 25% success rate for #1 picks is horrible

  17. pick6 Says:

they drafted “good” players but by the expectations of a #1 overall, only one exceeded them by having both a long and distinguished career for the team. testaverde had a long career (only partly with the bucs) but was never great, bell was a great buc but sadly only for a few years, and bo’s awesome inury-shortened career was all in another jersey. you don’t have to go the HOF to be a good #1 overall, but the gap between lee roy and the others mentioned as buccaneers is massive. JW has a chance to erase a lot of ugly history

  18. Buc1987 Says:

The golden year I became a fan.

Poor Vinny, they surrounded him with no talent at all…

  19. ATrain Says:

Joe puts on HIS site what he wants to… All Media has a spin their way…

BUT Joe lets you post your opinion….So post it and stop crying.. If he likes Winston AKA: 87 then so be it…

Right now no one can prove they are right. Time will tell..

But back your opinion with something with substance..

I believe Winston will fail. He has the personality that shows he gets out of control. I believe with Media attention and millions in the pocket along with a very young man he will go wild. Johnny is a prime example..

He may not time will tell..

But actions speak louder than words… Oh I know 87 Winston has not been in trouble in a while. But he also has had several people watching his every move so they can cash in too.

April 30th will be the launching pad, bad or good.

  20. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I think the bucs went 4-4 on their #1 picks, ricky bell was flat out stud, who got a disease, lee roy is greatest buc ever, vinny went on to aplayoff career away from here because the coaches sucked in his time, and bo jackson was one of the best athletes ever, but he was pissed at the bucs for ruining his eleigibility at auburn

  21. bucs4lyfe Says:

damn bucs fans. bell died before his time and was an awesome player, vinny lasted a long time in this league, bo Jackson and lee roy selmon. you morons theres only about 13-15 players in the history of the draft to make the hall of fame after going 1st overall so far

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

All that misery of past Bucs history is tempered with a little success, the 1979 rise from futility, the Super Bowl win and hope for each coming season. Everlasting hope.

  23. miken Says:

Will this be like the ricky bell pick?????
Everyone knew we would take a rb, but we passed on the consinsus #1 in dorsett and took bell. Do the bucs do it again?

  24. White Tiger Says:

Don’t forget Steve Young in that mix of former 1st rounders (Supplemental)!

…yeah, Tampa Bay is known as the minor league of the NFL…we draft them, hire the wrong coaches who disregard their talents and force them into THEIR systems…then the rest of the NFL picks our pocket and signs the future face of SOMEONE ELSE’S franchise, for peanuts!!

We used Vinny for a punching bag, and Steve as a snow plow…boy, were we sharp, eh!?

…hey you know what? Except for a brief period beginning in 2001…not much has changed!

  25. Espo Says:

Not 1st rounders. Overall 1st picks. Focus.

  26. Dewey Selmon Says:

Booker Reese cost us 2 #1 picks. At least Sean Ferrell was decent.

  27. miken Says:

@ white tiger…. good point, thats another overall #1 and we had a retiring lee roy and passed on reggie white for steve young. I think the 1st 4 picks of that draft are in the hall of fame

  28. Brian D Says:

    ATrain:

You aren’t backing up your opinion with anything bud biased speculation. Winston has NO history of partying, drug, or alcohol issues. Have you ever been to Tallahassee? Trust me, you don’t need any money to party there…especially when you’re a local celebrity.

  29. Stanglassman Says:

Ricky bell was here for 5 great years ’77-81. Kinda short but not too considering the position. It was very sad he got sick and died after leaving for SD. But I consider him to be a great pick only got traded because he was showing signs of his illness and didn’t know it hardly a reason to consider it a bad pick. If he was on Dallas and not sick he would have been better then Dorsett. I only wish they gave Ricky the ball more instead of Eckwood in the Rams playoff game he wouldn’t have fumbled and the Bucs would he beatin the Steelers in that Superbowl.
