“As If They Thought There Was Going To Be No Offensive Line”

April 2nd, 2015

logan mankins 1019Those who watched Jameis Winston on Game Changers on NFL Network this week saw Steve Mariucci get on Winston to take shorter steps while moving in the pocket.

Thanks to a goofy, Tuesday pro day regimen at Florida State, that knock on Winston arose again this morning.

Speaking on WDAE-AM 620, Anthony Becht, the former Bucs tight end and current ESPN analyst and Buccaneers Radio Network voice, was left scratching his head at Winston’s pro day performance, Like many, Becht was puzzled why Winston’s handlers let him make 102 throws and attempt to showcase all sorts of QB skills. Becht said a guy pegged for the very top of the draft should have thrown half as many balls, various pocket throws, and called it a day.

But Winston opted to let it all hang out, and it wasn’t always pretty.

“I think the one thing he showed me was, you know, he still gets elongated with his legs when he’s moving around in the pocket,” Becht said. “They moved around in the pocket so much, it was almost as if they thought there was going to be no offensive line that was going to try to protect him in the NFL.”

Insert your punchline there.

As for Winston’s non-pocket work, Becht said, “All that other stuff, It just puts other question marks as to what his technique and his skill level is.”

Regardless, Becht is high on Winston and said he can help the Bucs immediately.

    Whatever!

One of the things about analysis of Winston’s 102 passes at Pro-day, that excites me is his movement out of the pocket and his accuracy doing that.

If the offensive line can’t offer protection (insert your punchline here) a QB has to be able to roll left or right and then deliver an accurate pass downfield. That is EXACTLY what Winston did time and again.

That has not escaped the notice of the teams OC and QB Coach…believe me.

  3. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Pass on shameis. he looked rough at the proday. can we say teddy bridgewater. take williams and have a top d line for years to come. you can’t pass on a talent like that

  4. J Says:

Why do I get the feeling that Licht’s “heart on his sleeve” grin is playing us?

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

Obviously someone watched film of the Bucs o-line last year…..kinda like a Saturday night horror flick where the quarterback is the victim

^^^^^ And just how many D-Line picks have the Bucs hit grand slams on in the draft lately??? You can say GMC was a solid pick but it took a few years for that to show up and there was some bust talk in regards to him as well. There is no sure things in the draft but we NEED A QB and it is easier to get a solid starter at any other position in the free agency. Drew Brees was the last great free agent QB acquisition that comes to my mind. Drafting a franchise QB prospect is a must. Any other notion is bordering insanity.

I’m glad winner didn’t have a perfect pro day. I liked that he out worked everyone else with 100 passes. And most of all I loved the fact that this kids enthusiasm is contagious. I fear his “hissy fits” i think some fans with crucify him over it but all in all I’m pretty excited.

  8. WS99 Says:

Hope Connelly signs and we find a LT.

  9. iamkingsu Says:

I’m so sick of this I can’t wait for the full Gruden qb camp to air (the full version) with Winston to show you that the kid just “gets it”. He knows the game of football inside and out. All the little flaws and kinks you’ll complain about will be worked out because of his football iq and strong work ethic.

I beg the biggest winston hater to go look at the little 2 minute clip of him and gruden. If you dint walk away impressed its just know hope for you. He left Gruden speechless all gruden could say was wow that was impressive

  10. Jolly Bucs fan Says:

I actually have alot of respect for Winston for going all out, he actually bared his flaws, and therefore some people look at it as lackluster, seeing less accuracy on some throws but not realizing he’s showcasing himself at his worst, and still performing well considering that.

This earned alot of respect in my book, go big or go home, thats the attitude we need on our team, doesnt matter if analysts or fans who watched on TV didnt quite grasp what Winston was doing, because what matters is the Bucs saw a guy who is bold enough to not hide his weaknesses and goes all out whether or not he “needs” to.

Screw playing it safe, throw at the combine, go big on your pro day.

    I effing love it.

  11. WS99 Says:

    Jolly

    Ditto!

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

Most people down on him seem to be mad that he didn’t use the proday to only highlight his strengths. If that is what they wanted what is the point of that? It’s not like some new weaknesses were discovered. He missed like 5 throws out of 100. Not even close to how bad Bridgwater’s pro day was.

I think the best thing to take from his pro day is that he has really got his throwing motion a lot more compact and up high. Even while facing pressure / on the move; he didn’t resort to the baseball like motion; and that was huge improvement to see in only a few months of work. It means he is very coachable and can improve.

  13. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    I 3rd that notion jolly…

  14. Judy Houser Says:

Would not have mattered what he did at pro day, there always will be people that will find fault just because of who he is. If Tampa Bay passes on Jameis Winston they are fools. The possibility of drafting him is the only reason I renewed my season tickets this year. Love the BUCS but last year sitting in the stands just wasn’t fun.

  15. Buc4life1979 Says:

They moved him around as if there was going to be no offensive line around him…Welcome to the Lovie Smith Buccaneers Jameis….GET READY TO RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

  16. Dreambig Says:

This just in …. The Buccaneers actually hate Jameis Winston. They feel he was improperly punished for being a dumb kid. He was not punished by a corrupt police officer, the corrupt Tallahassee police department, the corrupt Florida State University, the corrupt State Attornies office, and a corupt former Fla State Supreme Court Judge. As there clearly is no integrity at all left in north florida, the buccaneers have decided to punish Jameis themselves by making him play behind our oline. Now that is cruel and unusual punishment!

  17. buc4lyfe Says:

mariota has plenty of underthrows as well and his pro day was described as “OK”. the pro day didn’t change anything for either player and that’s fine because the tape says Winston is a better player. rather draft a guy who needs improvement in footwork area than a guy who has to learn how to run a pro style offense and sorry but theres a lot more to it than simply taking snaps under center

  18. rayjay1122 Says:

Winston is very talented, has a high football IQ which means he may learn the playbook quickly and beat out Glennon in training camp and he has the “it factor”. He is a natural charismatic leader who elevates the play of those around him kind of like a motivational speaker at a business conference. Now that does not mean he won’t have bad games. Every QB does including Brady, Manning, Rodgers and Luck. We have to be realistic in our expectations with him but he is a very solid franchise QB prospect and it is way cool that we have first dibs. Don’t screw this up L&L!!!

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Great point Jolly Bucs fan. I’m glad Winston “went for it” at his pro day -warts and all – instead of playing it “safe”. That was his call BTW to add all the extra passes. It says a lot about the kind of competitor he is. Winston is not afraid to fail. He believes in his abilities even though he knows he still has a ton of work to do to become one of the best QBs in the NFL which is not only his wish – but his expectation.

    Good Job JOLLY

  21. Mcruer Says:

Roberto Garza just released by the Bears. Look for Lovie to make a move.

  22. Skyline Crew Says:

Let’s hope his “high football IQ” helps him to read underneath coverage.

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

OK it’s not like I’ve been a card carrying Winstonite. But it is getting ridiculous.

As has been mentioned it’s a freaking pro day. But I take the 102 throws as a good thing!!! Yes if I was Fameis agent I would have agreed with Becht. You got it in the bag kid no need to expose yourself to an off day.

I think Fameis proved to me and others he genuinely is a competitor. He WANTED to show people he was in shape and could toss the rock that much.

And I think he’s very aware of Mariota and what people are saying about MM.
Fameis good in the pocket…MM can throw on the run. I think Fameis took that as a personal challenge and wanted to show everybody he’s just as good as MM on the move.

Fameis challenged himself and whlle that was probably not a great business decision (Becht is right there) it’s a great show of confidence and competitiveness. The most arrogant statement he made reveals a lot about his mindset.

Answering the question about how he thought it went he said great and then immediately added if you don’t think it’s great he wants to sit down with you and view his tape up against anybody else’s (read Mariota here) pro day!

  24. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

If we’re not being played I’ll be shocked!

  25. Daniel Says:

I love how people like taken a handful of exceptions and trying passing as the norm. “Look at Bridgewater, he had a terrible pro day,” “Jamarcus had an amazing pro day and look what happened to him.” Go ahead run a franchise of the exceptions, see how long you last.

Bridgewater had the best mechanics in his class but his competitive nature was questioned, especially since he had the better team and not only did Blake go in and beat Louisville at home they won a BCS championship against a Baylor team that was a lock to win.

If anything Bridgewater and Winston are more a like as Mariota and Manziel share similar play styles.

Bridgewater looked bad and had a good rookie year. I think you don’t understand logic?

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

Except Mariota has better mechanics than Winston does.

  28. Buctebow Says:

I don’t expect him to be perfect or do great the first couple of years, but what I can expect is that he will be serviceable and way better than the “QB of the Future”, your buddy and mine…Melman. JW is the Bucs hope for the future. Whether they take him, or Mariota, just take a QB with the first pick and I’ll have something to root for.
