Moore Could Surprise

The spreadsheeters really like the Bucs’ signing of former Cowboys cornerback Sterling Moore.

The signing of Sterling Moore was met with a big yawn by many Bucs fans before they checked their phones for the tip off time of the next NCAA hoops game, cursing under their breath about Greg Hardy.

However, if one is to believe the stat geeks from Pro Football Focus, the Moore signing may very well be one of the best free agents of the season. Quarterbacks had but a 61 percent completion percentage when targeting receivers covered by Moore. Though Moore never had a pick, he never gave up a touchdown last season, either.

Moore will battle Leonard Johnson as the nickelback, which Lovie refers to as a starter because he plays so much. Don’t be shocked if Moore also pushes Verner a little bit, too, if Verner doesn’t soon turn the corner back to his Pro Bowl form.

Verner, Banks and Moore. We are actually pretty solid at cornerback. Very important considering our average pass rush.

    Agreed, LargoBuc.

I like what you did there “turn the ‘corner back’ to his Pro Bowl form”

Depth is an amazing thing to have. Honestly I’d have no problem with Moore and vernor on the outside and kick vernor n the nickel and let Moore and banks man the outsides n nickel formation because if all 3 are capable on the outside to stand ground n not get roasted then vernor is the best slot corner on the roster.

  6. BucNasty!!! Says:

Provided Moore wins the job that is lol no hand outs all competition if banks is better u start him with vernor Hell if Jenkins is better u start him no bias all competition Tampa 2 baby

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

The best DBs can only cover so long, if there’s no pass rush, it doesn’t matter….

BUT, that being said, the guy better prove he’s really good before everyone starts talking about him replacing one of the current starters….

I wonder how many of our “suck-azz” players from last year will turn into elite players as they digest the Tampa 2.

    @Sapp

“I wonder how many of our “suck-azz” players from last year will turn into elite players as they digest the Tampa 2.”

You need to be more specific. How many “suck azz” players are still on the roster? Elite? That’s a pretty high bar. Are you talking LVD and GMC elite or would solid NFL players be enough?

I think we all agree the 3 most glaring holes…QB..(fixed with the draft)…OL…and DL. The OL is still a huge ? But we still have the draft and the first pick off the waiver wire (some good players will show up there).

DL…perhaps not the hole we believe it to be. I agree with TBBF that the obsession with an individual like Simeon Rice is misplaced as well as the obsession on sacks.

What we need is PRESSURE…that includes rushed pass attempts and batted balls. How many batted balls did we have last year.

This doesn’t have to come from one or two players like a Hardy/GMC duo.
It can be a team effort.
And so if Smith and Gholston continue to improve…if English and Fatinikun also grow…the DL does not look all that bad.

I hope no matter what happens they let Lovie coach the team for at least five seasons. You can’t take over a crap team and turn them into a contender over night. I hope it doesn’t take five years but seems like Lovie has the team going in the right direction.

    Like this signing…

    Julio, get the stretch
    Ride to Harlem, Hollywood
    Jackson, Mississippi
If we show up, we gon’ show out

OMG lol didn’t know you still had swamp land to sell, thought you had given that up

  14. PanthersSuck! Says:

No TDs allowed. That’s what we need!

  15. snook Says:

This team needs to stay healthy. Period.

  16. Babaloo Says:

    No fly zone 2015

  17. Chris Says:

This is stupid. Sterling Moore is the only slot corner on the team besides Leonard Johnson. If he wins a starting job who plays the slot? Surely not Banks or Verner…..

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Hopefully Moore turns out to be solid. We definitely needed an upgrade from Leonard Johnson.

  19. bucs4lyfe Says:

I’d prefer having verner switching over to nickel slot on passing downs I think he’s more capable than anyone else we have to cover inside routes plus he gets killed with double moves.

  20. Teacherman777 Says:

I wish we would sign Tillman and Briggs

    As backups/coaches.

    Im dead serious.

  21. Gt40bear Says:

Oh no! Another PFF endorsement? Didn’t we learn our lesson with Amthony Collins? PFF is worse than useless!

  22. JFF Says:

Even if Moore is bad he’s still a GIANT upgrade over Leonard Johnson, who is probably the worst slot corner in the league.
