Jameis Watch: “More Than A Layup”

March 31st, 2015

jameis and jimboCrab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Check out this NFL Network video preview of Jameis Winston’s pro day festivities, which kick off at noon today on NFL Network. If that video doesn’t get you jacked up to be a Buccaneers fan, Joe suggests you have your vital signs checked.

Premier draft guru Mike Mayock, former scout and current NFL Network draft guru Daniel Jeremiah, and Charles Davis, all chime in.

Davis and Jeremiah claim there is no chance Winston has a bad pro day, like Rookie of the Year Teddy Bridgewater did last year. ‘

Davis called it “more than a layup.” And Jeremiah said he’d be “shocked” if Winston did not have what would be considered a “great” pro day. Jeremiah noted Winston will be under far less pressure than he was at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, where Winston was sharp.

Mayock said fans should look for Winston to display accuracy and athletic ability rolling left and right.

Yes, Lovie Smith, Jason Licht, Dirk Koetter and new Bucs quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian are all scheduled to attend. Joe’s wondering if they’ll be able to maintain their poker faces. Licht has been known for ear-to-ear grins in Winston’s presence.

(Remember, Joe is live at the entire FSU pro day, which starts at 10 a.m. So Joe will have all kind of goodies throughout the day and tomorrow. And tune in to the “JoeBucsFan Hour” with Steve Duemig on WDAE-AM 620 at 5 p.m.)

At this point do we really care if he has a bad pro day?

Fameis has put enough on tape in actual games to solidify his rep.

If the Bucs feel fine about his “character issues” then he’s the pick and I don’t care if he trips and falls on his butt today that should change.

  2. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    oops shouldn’t change.

  3. robert 9 Says:

true, he should have no issues today, and the pick is in if you look at licht’s expression.

problem is licht has proven to be a moron so far as he has been here short of mcdonald and verner. same with lovie. so they can love him all they want, just means a couple of morons are high on the guy, that is if you look at what they’ve done lately.

  4. bucs4lyfe Says:

what they are saying is all about talent and football skills, don’t remember glennon being in the spotlight ever during the draft hmm must be a reason JW is given so much credit for his talent

  5. Couch Fan Says:

We are now under a month away from Jameis being selected #1 By the Bucs from his home in Alabama! Can’t wait to see him don that Red & Pewter hat and jersey. Good Luck today Jameis, though I’m sure you wont need it as you blow up your pro day.

    Welcome To Tampa, Jameis!!

  6. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Right about now, the anti-Winston people will begin to cover their bases. Mariota is supposedly the pick (despite all the obvious contrary), but, make sure to also call Licht and Lovie idiots, so, when they actually pick Winston, they can just say the regime is bad. Bases covered.

    Always good for a laugh..

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

Kinda like looking good in practice…..

OBW, see Browns would love to get rid of Joe’s mancrush, Johnny Football, probably get him for a sixth-rounder……

  8. Fishfries Says:

The Mariotta faithful are going to really hate today.

  9. Chef Paul Says:

Ugh! I can’t believe this is the day of all days I’ll be on the road the entire day and miss it. Hopefully Sirius radio will talk about it!

  10. Luther Says:

Just called my wife to make sure she records it while I’m at work. Nothing against Mariota since I really like the kid but this really shouldn’t be close. Pro Day shouldn’t matter once you’ve seen the tape. Bad Pro Day for Mariota really has no impact on how I feel about the whole thing.

  11. pick6 Says:

just more content for the TV stations. i’m more excited about the NFL network special on winston tonight. will be the first time many NFL fans actually get to observe the player they’ve already decided to vilify

  12. pick6 Says:

3/31 is the official beginning of the NFL’s mammoth marketing wheels turning to finally give people an idea of the young man beyond the heavily slanted reporting of an accusation few people have bothered to dig deeper into. the NFL needs the country to accept JW and there will be a charm offensive to shift the sheep back to the other side of the fence. where many educated people already are.

  13. WantstaStayaBuc Says:

Even if you don’t care about character, the guy was tied for second most interceptions of ALL quarterbacks in FBS. Why waste a number one pick on that?
    http://stats.ncaa.org/rankings/change_sport_year_div

Cue Nole fan saying how the interceptions weren’t his fault but the touchdowns were. You drank the Kool Aid now you don’t even realize how bad it tastes.

When you try justifying this poor character by saying that you were just as bad, it doesn’t improve his image, it just lessens yours.

  14. unbelievable Says:

Some of you guys really need to pull winston’s jock out of your mouth. You act as if he can do no wrong, and single handidly won every game for FSU.

I think he is our pick, but I’m not so blind to think everything will turn around as soon as we draft him.

First, he’s a rookie, let’s get our expectations in line. Second, he still has serious mechanical flaws that need to be worked on for him to be successful in the pros. Third, he’s still behind this same terrible o-line. You think he would have been great at FSU with no o-line and no run game? Jameis might be coming to Tampa, but this team has a long way to go offensively.

  15. Jolly Bucs fan Says:

The only way the bucs can fail this draft is by not drafting a QB, even if they go with Mariota, he should still be successful and have a good career, if just not as good as Winstons, but I pray everyday that we do not select a DE or trade down from the 1st pick

  16. Jacko101 Says:

Hope he has a good pro day, and get drafted by someone other than Tampa.

  17. bucs4lyfe Says:

get off of this site and go watch your future 1st round draft pick……it’s kinda funny no one even knew mariota was having a pro day until after it happened lol

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Jolly Bucs Fan

    You got it!!!

  19. lurker Says:

watchin now on espn. winston will be on at 12:45 et/ 9:45 pt though the camera is around him throughout with other players.

  20. flmike Says:

Geez, NFLN just showed Winston shirtless, at 50 years old I have more definition than him….maybe he should take his crab legs without the garlic butter next time

  21. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

So unbelievable tell me,how good was the team Luck took over and has lead to the playoffs each season since becoming a member of the Colts? Would you with a straight face say that that roster was better than the one WINSton will be leading next season. I think not. I recall Cam Newton having early success the same with RG3. Big Ben also experienced it while being supported by a great defense. One of which WINSton will have. I find it strange this thought that it is impractical to think or assume he may very well be good the moment he steps on an NFL field when we’ve seen others with a lessor skillset do it before him.

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

You assume he will struggle from day one,I assume he’ll be great from day one. Time will tell.

  23. lurker Says:

the colts tanked on purpose. they had a great team before and after. only had a poor team to get luck.

  24. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Working out @ 1PM….should minimize the flab shadows

  25. bo Says:

Johnny Manziel had a great pro day also….means less than nothing what happens today

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Body type and a pudgy stomach won’t hinder Winston from making the throws count. That much is obvious. Winston can carry extra weight and still get it done. Drive and determination, he has got those aspects down pat.

  27. lurker Says:

lovie and winston chattin for a whiile and lovie smiling.

  28. lurker Says:

    on now

  29. lurker Says:

this is crazy. even cam erving is assisting at center and whitfield, jr “rushing” with pads to simulate a rusher.

  30. bucrightoff Says:

    Jameis Weighsaton?

  31. Martinii Says:

Read a few articles today about Winston’s workout habits and physique (Pft) “Big Ben” and Sonny Jergusen were not muscle bound work out freaks and they do and did ball. Met “Broadway” Joe at a USO tour and he was slumped shoulder with a little gut. Winston won 27 games in a row. I’m not concerned about his abs.

  32. lurker Says:

231 and slingin the rock. you will be bowing down praisin jameis christ, soon.

  33. charactermatters Says:

    Jameis is not Luck

  34. WS99 Says:

    Lurker

    Rotf – Jameis christ. Lmao

  35. WS99 Says:

I’m just here so I don’t get fined.

  36. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

You right he’s better then Luck. And lurker if you can believe the Colts organization tanked for the purpose of drafting him why is difficult too believe the Buccs haven’t done the same for the purpose of drafting WINSton something ice been stressing for months.

  37. Chuck Robinson Says:

Welcome to beautiful Tally, Joe! Enjoy your stay.

  38. lurker Says:

when did i say the bucs didn’t tank? they most definitely did in the last half/quarter of the last game. whether they started in other games i do not know.

  39. twizzylax Says:

    @Unbelievable,

Out of 128 teams, FSU was #98 in rushing YPG (for comparison, Oregon was #22). Winston did what he did with a terrible line and running game, yes. Individual talent on the line does not mean they played well together, especially since they did not have a center until the 10th game of the season when Erving was moved there.

  40. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Bucsfan

” Winston can carry extra weight and still get it done. Drive and determination, he has got those aspects down pat.”

Agree to a point Bucsfan. For the next few years he can get away with it. But as he ages he will have to address his weight or go downhill with age.

But if you’re correct and he has those last two qualities down we’ll be fine.

Fameis impresses me as someone who plays to his competition. He didn’t really need to worry about his physique at FSU because he had such a total physical advantage over everybody else.

The NFL will be different. But I do believe Fameis is very competitive and it won’t take him long to realize he’s not just going to blow people away on sheer talent. He get int shape.

Sonny Jurgensen. LOL Now you’re going back to dudes I watched growing up. Don’t forget Bobby Layne. Some of the old timers used to fires up ciggies in the tunnel to the locker room. Of course the DL back then also had guts and smoked.

Today’s DL only fire up the occasional J and then they hit the gym extra hard
    .
    Fameis will get in shape!

  41. TennesseeAndTampaFan Says:

All you people who think Winston played behind a great o-line with a great running game last year never watched a FSU game. Until they moved Erving to center, the o-line was a complete joke and there was no running game. When they finally made the change is when the team started to shine on offense. It also helped take some pressure of Winston. Remember too that he was relying on a couple of true freshmen at WR. Freshmen do things like run the wrong route and have a tendency to drop more balls because they are learning everything on the fly.

  42. Patrickbucs Says:

He’s basically had 3 months to get into shape not including he’s been done with school in early December. I don’t understand how a 21 year old can’t get in prime shape in that timeframe? You don’t have to be ripped by any means but it’s just puzzling to me.

  43. Couch Fan Says:

Some of you act like Winston has a gut that hands down to his knees. LMAO. Yes he has a little pouch. But by no means does it mean “hes out of shape.” Its just comical to listen to some of you talk out of the wrong hole.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  44. Couch Fan Says:

    hangs*

  45. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Say it again couch fan.

  46. RustyRhinos Says:

So very tired of the all Winston show all of the time.
Yeah he is one of the top QB’s in this draft. While on this blog we have been on the Winston watch since last season. I’m all for improved QB play in Tampa. But addressing the QB position with a QB who is slow, has a low long windup in his throwing motion. Is having issues getting and staying in top physical condition. (No, a jelly belly is not in top shape) Gives me a cause for concern. He has only played 2 seasons of college football. Yes I know he red shirted in college.
As it is now I do see the Oline he will be playing behind, it does not look good for him to be overly successful. Without major help on the oline. So can we tone down on the “franchise Savior” mantra until Mr. Winston has at least made a NFL game appearance and done some good productive things on the field. I hope if we draft Mr Winston, he can be all Joe and his JBF Winston fan club has professed him to be. If not, well I doubt that there will be a multi daily posting about it on this blog.
    Go Bucs!
