Jameis Watch: “Loved The Presence”

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Pete Schrager, of FOX Sports, has been buzzing all over the country diving into all things NFL Draft.

Fresh off a west coast swing that included mingling with league executives at several pro days, including at the University of Oregon, Schrager has pumped out his latest mock draft.

He offered well-rounded insight into why the Buccaneers will draft Jameis Winston.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

Winston showed up to Indianapolis last month with questions surrounding his draft stock. He answered many of them emphatically. Issues about his shoulder? He addressed them in both his interviews with teams and in his workout on Saturday, throwing the ball better than any other prospect in the field. Questions about how he’d handle media? He took care of those with a confident approach to the many inquiries he was faced with. His 4.91 40-yard dash? One NFL executive said: “It’s just about what we expected. And we’re looking for the best quarterback in this draft, not the best track star.” Winston was confident and borderline cocky, and another league executive said he “loved the presence.” He’s a fiery competitor, he loves football, and his teammates love him. I’m told Tampa Bay’s two-day meeting with Winston earlier this month went very well, and an NFL front office executive described his team’s meeting with Winston in Indianapolis as “extremely impressive.” There may be off-field concerns, but when it comes to an NFL quarterback who’s ready to start Day 1, he could be the most prepared for the challenge since Andrew Luck. This pick could end up being the most important one of Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht’s career.

Yes, nearly everyone alive is convinced the Bucs have checked all the boxes on Winston and are simply going through their due diligence and waiting to see if Winston does something stupid between now and the draft.

That may be 100 percent accurate, but Joe’s not betting on it. Lovie Smith is often unpredictable, as is Team Glazer, and Jason Licht has shown he’s unafraid of bold moves.

Seems like the Perfect fit for the Jets

  2. Walter Says:

They better do something about our pathetic O-line to protect him. Otherwise it won’t matter what QB we line up under center.

  3. Buc1987 Says:

This team needs an injection of cocky and confident in the worse way.

  4. bucfever40 Says:

This guy is just too good to pass up, he went undefeated in highschool, won nearly every game in his collegiate career, had a 4.0 GPA in hs and I believe a 3.5 in college. We’re told he has a very high football IQ, which seems obvious. A classic pocket passer that likes to hang in there and drill open receivers in the last second before getting hit, he goes through all his progressions and in tight moments can scramble to extend plays, he has a BIG, accurate arm that is NFL ready. I seen him blow Steve Mariucci away on the grease board like he’s done it 100 times before. The kid has charisma, and he LOVES Tampa Bay! Even FSU haters have to see the enormous upside to Winston’s game, DRAFT HIM!!

  5. Walter Says:

    ^^^^^ Truth

Mariota won’t motivate the team like Jameis would

  6. tmaxcon Says:

Lovie needs Jameis to save his arse…

The way free agency is going I’m starting to think this year will be Koetter’s audition to replace Lovie at season ended or midway thru.

  7. Harry Says:

If they don’t get a good solid franchise QB this year, I am so done with them.

  8. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Good Christian Lovie will keep it GC and draft Mariota. People are silly. The same reasons Dungy prefers Mariota will be the reasons that Lovie prefers him…. Everyone else is wrong. Watch

  9. louden Says:

Agree, Winston might be perfect match for Jets^^

Tampa could install some kind of the “modern” sheme like the Eagles use (3rd ranked scoring offense in NFL without an Hall of Fame type QB), call it gimmiky, fact is, all the good teams use the very same concepts – but Chip is a very good Coach..

And comparing the top two QB´s in this years draft, Mariota would be the better option, in terms of sheme fit..

Hopefully Bucs draft the first “new-era” kind of hall of famer, now that would be huge.. but still need to upgrade O-line – sign Wiz!! (and/or hope for second FA wave, but c´mon we have the cap space to get one fine young O.liner)

  10. louden Says:

not saying Mariota is the new-era future Hall of Famer – but we can hope so

  11. BirdDoggers Says:

I think the Glazers see this as the best opportunity to finally get a QB and it makes too much sense from a business aspect. The Glazers are businessmen and they want to win. Taking a QB gives them the best opportunity to achieve both. Fans in the seats, jersey sales and wins on Sundays. It would be a shocker if the pick wasn’t a QB and I think it will be Winston.

  12. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

I’ve looked at this pic a few times now and I can’t figure out the hand rubbing thing with the QB prospect. Is it a sign of excitement, like he and Jackson are looking forward to the excitement they will induce on the field? Or are the QB prospects hands rubbing together slowly as a sign of deviousness or sneakiness. Like a used car salesman trying to unload a clunker. (think Johnny Snortball or Snidely Whiplash)
In any event, I guess we are taking this guy. SUre look forward to a lot of great displays of English eloquence at his news conferences. Might be ok if we are winning. (He went to freaking college for god’s sake) I sure hope we are not wasting yet another 1st round pick.

  13. Marlow Says:

Phillip Rivers to Tampa? Make the trade!

  14. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    From a non-biased site:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had Marcus Mariota in the building yesterday, and after posting an interview with the quarterback they’ve now posted an interview with general manager Jason Licht about the Oregon prospect’s visit, too. High praise was handed out, especially for Mariota’s character.

“What he can bring to this organization, this town is a guy with high character, that will represent this organization with class, and will give everything that he has to work toward becoming a great quarterback,” Licht said.

  15. Rrsrq Says:

You need Winston on that wall, from my Jack Nicholson voice. You mighty not like every thing he has done but the results are right in front of you.

  16. louden Says:

In terms of Winston and his scrambling:
once in the open and on full run – he can make sth. happen, but if you look on the tape, he barely outruns (college) D-liner.. he won´t suddenly outrun NFL types..
    +
lots of his running is like offensive bull-rush, like a Power back, he keeps pushing etc.. do you think he will last NFL pounding?
Don´t expect the same running in the NFL

same with Mariota (but he doesn´t get the unnessaccary hits) and his running ability is way better + in the scheme Bucs would use him in, its RGIII and Wilson comparable.. so just fine

  17. passthebuc Says:

    BORING

  18. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    @ Joes,

Uh-oh. It looks like the Bucs are pimping MM’s visit even more than they did Winston’s…..

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Erik….you are in such denial it’s not even funny.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

“I think they’re gonna run the offense similar to Atlanta the last few years being that they hired their coordinator (Dirk Koetter). And I had a lot of chance to talk to Tampa’s General Manager this past Thursday (at Mariota’s pro day) and what I was told was they have had two different people; private investigators digging deep into Winston’s past and doing a lot of homework on the guy. They’ve talked to about 75 people about his past, 75 sources and my feeling is their finding is that he’s a pretty good guy. At this point – I would be shocked; SHOCKED – if he was not the choice by Tampa.” Gil Brandt

  21. J 2.0 Says:

This is not a good year to have the 1st overall pick.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Maybe Gil Brandt doesn’t know that Dungy loves Mariota or surely he would word things differently.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

PR’s sources from One Buc are all telling them the pick is going to be Winston too.

All the signs point in one direction and ONLY one direction.

Just as I said 2 months ago….Jameis Winston is coming to Tampa!

  24. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

JOE! We are not picking WINSTON!

Trust me! I know people in the front office! Mariotta will be the pick! The Bucs do not want a THUG as the face of the franchise!

    Two things bro…

1 True Christians, dont separate themselves

  26. Greg Schiano Says:

I don’t want him on that wall…I DON’T NEED HIM ON THAT WALL! Here is hoping that Famous Porky Winston who is slower then snot on a cold winter day (that’s slower than the Big Poodle) is not the choice. The comparisons of Famous Jameis to Andrew Luck makes me want to puke!

Andrew Luck is a once in a couple of generations sure thing. Yes, Famous Porky throws a good ball in a Pro style system…but that is no guarantee he will work as hard as Luck, Brady, Manning, Brees….he could just as easlily mirror Jamarcus Russell and Jadeveon Clowney as be partially as good as Andrew Luck!

Andrew Luck is what season 3? I will shut up after 3 seasons of Famous Porky playing every game, not being arrested multiple times, and actually throwing more td’s to picks. Until then…stop with the comparisons to Andrew Luck! Season 3….which is two seasons passed the firing of Lovie Smith will tell if Famous Porky is a great franchise QB1 or is the painted up pig we fear him to be!

  27. BFFL Says:

I’m pretty certain the pick is Mariota

  28. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    87,

I’m not in denial. We can just call it ‘faith’. I still have faith that the Bucs will make the responsible decision and pick Mariota.

  29. bucsjunkie Says:

well no need to debate this then. Gatorboy has spoken….

  30. tval Says:

Gatorboy knows!! Shut it down, folks..roflmao!! Gimme a break, you jealous loser..its gonna be hysterical watching you jump ship, or jump on jameis’ bandwagon after realizing hes an undeniable success…over/under, 8 mos, anybody??? Such a racist knucklehead

  31. Sick of the debate Says:

    Sorry, malfunction.

1 True Christians dont separate themselves from sinners. Because we are ALL sinners and it is ONLY through Christ that we are saved.

    2. Give Lovie more credit, hes not Dungy’s little lapdog. Yes, Lovie worked for him and took Dungy’s defensive scheme to Chicago. But, they dont share a brain.

Ive been reading all your posts, and you are one of the guys on here that will point out all these petty little flaws in Winston’s character. Give the moral high ground bit a rest.

  32. Wausa Says:

This is such an easy decision. Jameis is obviously going to be the first over all pick in this years draft.

  33. tval Says:

No, greg, you’ll “shut up” far sooner…sure, you’ll have changed your name to jameisistheman, by then, or something more suited to your taste :)…remember this date when the bucs are the worst team and colts are top 4..youll acknowledge how short a time it takes jameis to narrow that margin, right? :)..drew brees took 9 years and sean payton to look decent..funny, everyone else can admit how similar in work ethic he is to all these upstanding, hardworking white qbs you mentioned , but you cant? Coincidence? Im starting to really see the hard line anti-winston group on here for what it truly is…oh, and peyton didnt ‘tea-bag’ anyone in the pros (like he did trainer at tennessee) as far as we know, yet..stop embarrassing yourself, jock sniffer

  34. Buc1987 Says:

    It’ soooooo funny these days.

All they have for ammo is, I know Mariota will be the pick.

This Curtis guy is even more hilarious, repeating the same nonsense everyday about his family working for the Bucs.

Joe this is better than going to the movies or Disney World right now.

These guys are hilarious and I can’t wait to see them become unglued aftre the pick is in.

Your site kicks the hell out of all the other sites and it’s not even close.

  35. tval Says:

What was luck vs garbage pats d, 10-40 120 yds? Lmao!! Something embarrassing like that..hes the most overrated player in the history of the game, already, imho..solid starter who wont carry you but is pretty good with great supporting cast..he was top 4 and the colts spent like the redskins in free agency..that should tell you what they think hes capable of shouldering…people critical of jameis’ throwing motion should look at lucks awful wind-up..he telegraphs passes and is very inconsistent with his accuracy..some throws he makes with ease, and others he blows reggie waynes acl, missing him by 10 yards when hes running wide open on a 10 yard route..remember that dime and andrews tears? Hahaha!! His being crowned as brady or montana even brees or manning is plain disrespectful..just stop!! Hes white and an nfl qb, thats literally all they have in common.

  36. tval Says:

Gotta agree, 87! Joes killing it.

  37. Buccfan37 Says:

A lot more Bucs fans will be highly upset if Winston is not the pick. This will be the most irate bunch on these pages. It’s a done deal you say. Then why bother rejecting differing opinions on a daily basis. You’re not sure are you?

  38. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I can’t wait for Jameis to descend on the Raymond James Stadium draft night party like Tony Stark in the beginning of Iron Man 2….bikini girls dancing, pyro technics working, as he flies in with his modified Bucs jersey/Iron Man suit on

Many that’s going to be sweet

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Buccfan37…Erik and I have a jersey bet going on.

I’m 1000% positive the pick is going to be Winston.

Another thing that makes me laugh and shake my head is if all the signs were pointing to Mariota, all his fans would be in here telling us about it.

Hell I would have already conceded the pick was going to be Mariota. Not these guys though. They just know it’s not going to be Winston. As if they are burying their head in the sand and won’t come up to see the signs.

Erik should just buy me my jersey already it’s that much of a done deal, but I’ll wait. I’ll be at the draft party telling fans before the draft kicks off how I got a free Winston jersey. Good times ahead…good times.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

CreamsicleBananaHammock…are you going to the party? I am.

  41. J 2.0 Says:

There is no way Jameis doesn’t get taken 1st overall. It is the safest bet in America.

Everyone keeps talking about teams trading up with TB, NY, JAX, TEN, so on to trade for Mariota. Why is no one trying to trade up for Winston?

One could say it is because there is no way the Bucs are going to trade away Winston. But you’d still want to entertain offers. I keep reading stories like “Eagles trying to trade up for Mariota” or “Why Mariota is perfect for the Rams” or “Redskins WILL take Mariota at 5” or “Why Titans have to take Mariota” or “Jets will trade away 6th so ‘unnamed team’ can draft Mariota” Where is the Winston chatter? Someone has to be interested in this guy other than the Bucs.

  42. rayjay1122 Says:

I really think Winston has all of the tools to be our franchise QB. Unlike our 1st pick wasted on Bo Jackson, Winston actually has stated that he wants to play for the Bucs. I also like Mariota but he does have a really boring personality. I think Winston has the better “rally the troops” ability with his confidence and swagger. I have turned into a human pendulum on this debate….back and forth..repeat…repeat. LOL

  43. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

87, I think so….really just depends on if I’m in town or not. I’ll definitely let you know and we will have to figure out a way to say hi if we’re both there.

Going to be a helluva time

  44. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

My family in the front office told me personally that the Glazers dont like the thug Winston

  45. Buc1987 Says:

    Ha ha ha ha ^^^

  46. J 2.0 Says:

I get the impression Mariota knows he isn’t going to be drafted by the Bucs. I also get the impression he doesn’t want to. Bucs are not in a position to draft Mariota and try to build an offense that suits his skillset. Would take a year to get system in place and another 1-2 years to get it going. I don’t see how anyone can really think we are taking Mariota. Besides (keep in mind I am of the trade down if possible variety) Winston is BY FAR the more talented QB. BY FAR. It isn’t even close.

I really don’t even have that good of an argument for trading down anymore. I like the idea of gaining 2-3 years of 2 1st rd picks and 2nd rd picks, but the more I watch Winston, the better he looks. I will say this. Keep your eyes on Auburn this season. Jeremy Johnson is the real deal. I’ve always hoped the Bucs would be in position to take him in the future, but Winston will be our QB.

  47. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

    Laugh now 1987,

I dont get your obsession with this THUG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  48. Tampabaybucfan Says:

While I have warmed up considerably to the idea that Winston will be our pick….there is still a part of me that feels the Bucs will surprise everyone and draft Mariota….Joe says it with his last line of the article.

“Joe’s not betting on it. Lovie Smith is often unpredictable, as is Team Glazer, and Jason Licht has shown he’s unafraid of bold moves.”

This could go down to the wire…..I believe most of the Mocks have us taking Winston because we are “desperate” to win now and he is the most “plug & play” option…….like Joe said……don’t bet on it….

  49. Sick of the debate Says:

    Curtis

Prove it. Give names. What role do they play in the front office.

There is a Checkers down the street from One Buc, is their office in there?

Prove it or shut up already.

“Joe’s not betting on it. Lovie Smith is often unpredictable, as is Team Glazer, and Jason Licht has shown he’s unafraid of bold moves.”

TBBF…anything to keep the debate going for Joe, that’s what I thought when I read that line…imo Jameis Watch was started about a month too early and fans are worn out by now.

    “don’t bet on it”

    I already have.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

    Curtis…when is Spring Break over?

  52. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

  53. J 2.0 Says:

“Joe’s not betting on it. Lovie Smith is often unpredictable, as is Team Glazer, and Jason Licht has shown he’s unafraid of bold moves.”

Joe didn’t write this because there is a chance we draft Mariota. He wrote this because unfortunately with Lovie Smith there is the real chance he would draft Leonard Williams.

To be fair its hard to hear correctly when your family member is working those loud vacum cleaners!!!

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @87

Yes….I know, a jersey…..but you have a backup plan….if you lose, you will save all that money on season tickets……plenty enough to pay off your bets.

I can guarantee you….that the Tampabaybucfan is more prepared for Winston than 87 is prepared for Mariota….Make sure the wife and children are visiting the Grandparents on draft night….just in case!!!

  56. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

87… I’ll go to the draft party too, so we can hang out…. And if Winston is the pick, I’ll order your jersey on the spot. However, I think sanity and logic will win out in the end and Mariota will be the pick.

  57. Clint Says:

Gil Brandt said he’s going #1 overall to Tampa.

    Trust in Gil

  58. MadMax Says:

Im not even thinking about our 1st anymore….thats how confident I am in my gut feelings…and its Winston, no doubt about it.

Round 2 is my focus now, and Im thinking its very possible we trade it for more picks. I dont want to, but it would be smart unless a cant miss is there.

  59. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Think about this….. IF we take the QB who is perceived to be ready to win now, and we don’t win now, then L & L will possibly get fired immediately. However, if we take Mariota…. Winning immediately would be a bonus and patience with L & L would be automatic for at least another year or 2…. Too much logic, #WinstonWhackos?

  60. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

Not one team is rumored to be interested in moving up for Winston. The smartest and most clutch QB coming out of college, ever, besides Manning and Montana. Curious if you ask me. 80% plus Owners and GMs pass on Winston, reported. And some of you don’t find this curious.. Don’t bet the house that the Bucs are drafting Winston. Joe I’ve been told more decision makers ,including Bryan, lean Mariota and unless the Winstonites can turn Glazers the pick will not be Winston. My thoughts come from under the Glazers umbrella. No clue who the Winstonite(s) at OBP are.

  61. Buc1987 Says:

Excellent Erik…I’ll see you there then.

  62. Phillip Says:

So Joe did Peter ask all these questions to the same scouts and league executives and turned up the same answer for each? I’m just wondering if the league executive that was cool with his 40 time was also cool with his cocky attitude. That’s not me trying to be negative towards him just an honest question. What if scout A was okay with his shoulder and cockiness but not okay with his 40 time? Just food for thought.. Would also like to know these same questions when it comes to Mariota.

This is completely random but I do need to ask the Pro Winston crowd.. Do you guys even want Lurker to be on your side? He’s a different kind of special..

There are many impatient Buc fans who want Lovie fired now…..that started even before the middle of last season…

This just isn’t going to happen…..like it or not….you are in fantasy land!!!

The Glazers know that they must commit to Lovie for at least 2 more years….possibly more.

Most mock drafts have us taking the NFL ready QB because they think Lovie & the Bucs are desperate.

I totally disagree with that…I think the Glazers are willing to see this through and know they likely pulled the plug too early with the previous coaches.

If I were a Winston supporter, it would make me very nervous to have Tony Dungy hanging around Lovie & the Glazers….much less having his son (played with Mariota) working fot the Bucs.

Bajakian & Koetter could very easily design an offense for Mariota….and Glennon could easily be a bridge QB for a year and then traded with one year left on his rookie contract.

All this slam dunk talk is wishful thinking…..sure it’s based on the Mocks….but it’s still very early in the process.

I think the real key will be Mariota’s private workout in April….this is where his skillset will be truly put to the test by the Bucs. If he does well with that, he could very well be the pick.

Ya see Bonzai I’m not the only one speculating that the NFL might have told him to stay at home.
    _________________________________________________________

Makes no sense whatsoever. So the NFL wants to start shopping the draft to citires to bid on, and in its first excursion outside NYC, they won’t even have the potential #1 pick on hand?

No sense whatsoever. They are not happy he’s not coming. The “report” is baseless speculation to drive page views from anti-Winston folk who love the thought of him being banned from the draft. But the NFL is not happy he’s not there. At all.

  67. Couch Fan Says:

I’m sure they arent happy that he’s not coming. That doesn’t make the speculation any less true if they are thinking with a level head. There is no doubt in my mind that Winston would be boo’d out of the building if he went to the draft. That would be a very bad look for the NFL’s #1 pick. It also makes sense for Winston to stay home for the same reason, he can control the envirornment and the morons of the world wouldn’t be able to distrupt what should be the biggest moment of his life.

This is all silly though because its not a big deal. All I want to see is him holding up the Bucs #1 Jersey come draft night, I dont care where he does it from.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!!

  68. Phillip Says:

    @TBBF

Agree with some points.. Think the Koetter signing is huge but how long does he stay is the best question to ask.. If he succeeds with Glennon and/or Rookie QB then he is most likely gone next season to be a HC somewhere else.. I don’t think our QB coach is anything special either honestly if Koetter were gone the following year…

I do think if Lovie fails miserably again next/this season(I’m talking bottom 4 in the NFL) I don’t see him surviving into the 2016 season. New HC likely will pick a new staff (doubtful the Bucs promote Koetter).

I do think it’s completely stupid for people to think just because the mock drafts have them selecting Winston #1 overall means it is a slam dunk (Mario Williams and Eric Fisher)..

I also thought Mariota’s private workout would be the reason we either select him, Winston, or trade down as well..

  69. Buccfan37 Says:

What first overall draft pick would pass up the chance to be that pick in public at the draft? I can’t recall any. The silence out of the Winston camp says a lot. He is probably stuffed away rolled up in a rug for his own sake, don’t say anything that can be used against you because the haters far outnumber those in favor of you becoming the face of a franchise and the top pick. Of course not here, this place is starving for a player who looks like a winner.

  70. Stanglassman Says:

It’s not logical at all to think that drafting a rookie QB with the 1st overall pick that isn’t prepared to start right away will somehow buy you time as a head coach. There are times that a coach won’t draft a rookie QB because they are know as coach killers because they often take time to develop.
Gatorkid is too funny not to comment on. I knew some high ups in the Wyche coaching staff and only 2-3 people in the building knew who the 1st pick was going to be and they told NO ONE. I was told the draft board was covered when not in use, door glass blacked out and the room wasn’t cleaned for weeks. I can only imagine the 1st overall would be that much more classified. The kid is flat out lying and a bit of an a-hole racist to boot.

  71. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t think Winston’s decision to not attend the draft has any bearing on whether he is the #1 pick or not.
His 5-6 hour meeting with Goodell was certainly a curious event to say the least. We have no idea what was discussed…..and I understand it was initiated by Winston.
I can only assume his appearance (or not) was part of that discussion. It very well may have been a PR suggestion from his agent.

  72. Pickgrin Says:

Man – this seems like the longest off season in history – and we are only 6 weeks into it. 7 more long weeks until the draft.

Get this pick right Licht. Your job depends on it. The sooner you sign Winston, the sooner you can get a playbook in his hands and he can start filling his brain with Koetter’s offensive concepts and plays. Those extra few weeks of prep work could make a difference in how ready he is to start and succeed as the starter in week 1.

Is it possible the Bucs gave Winston a playbook or the rudiments of one when he visited and told him to get busy studying? Is that legal by NFL rules?

I don’t know if it’s NFL legal to provide a playbook to a person not drafted…..but it would be unwise unless you have absolutely determined he is the pick….and have the playbook already…..Koetter certainly already has many plays designed but some of them may depend on the QB….and it could be for Glennon or another FA QB that may be brought in.

Stop profiling. Profiling is always wrong in both ways.
