Dante Fowler with the No. 1 overall pick?

Joe has long maintained Bucs coach Lovie Smith is thoroughly unpredictable when it comes to personnel.

Just look at last year, for example: It feels like yesterday when Lovie dismissed Joe’s question about whether Lovie had reservations because Jeff Tedford had no NFL experience.

Then there was the jettisoning of Darrelle Revis and thinking Josh McCown was anything more than what he was: journeyman. Then pouring cash into Ghost Johnson and Anthony Collins, and talking himself into thinking Mike Jenkins was more than just a slug.

That is why Lovie, despite Stevie Wonder seeing the Bucs need Jameis Winston worse than a diabetic needs insulin, very well could pass.

Joe is not the only one gnawed by this (irrational?) fear.

So too is Matt Sinn. The St. Pete native and former executive producer of the 11 o’clock news on WTSP-TV, Channel 10, recently decided to put his career above his heart. He drug his family into the dead of a Milwaukee winter for a better job. (With the winter the Wisconsonites have had, you don’t think Matt questioned his move as he was scraping ice off of his windshield and shoveling his driveway?)

Relocating doesn’t mean Sinn traded in his Buccaneers fandom. He posted a Twitter message that positively sent chills up Joe’s spine, just after learning the Bucs bowed out of the Greg Hardy sweepstakes today.

Joe could easily see this happening but prays nightly it does not. Such a move would be the most irresponsible transaction pulled by an NFL team in recent memory, probably since Dave Wannstedt traded away the No. 11 overall pick in the 1997 draft for the immortal Rick Mirer.

If this is considered, that’s when Team Glazer would need to step in and exert common sense and control.

    I hated the hiring of Lovie, hated his moves last season, hated the play on the field (although I stopped caring about seven games in honestly) and have hated the way this new football years has started. Why would I think that I won’t hate his next move?

    I have two degrees from UF, and would be FURIOUS if they pass on Winston (although I might grow to like Mariota). If they completely pass on a potential franchise quarterback they’ll all get fired within a year and we’ll STILL be looking to fill that slot.

    It’s not a defensive league anymore. Those days are passed, and I’m afraid that Lovie’s have as well.

    I think I would be pretty disappointed if we passed on winston. Lovie knows enough about pass rushers where he should be able to identify talent in this draft without spending the first pick on it.

    Either way, does anyone think it would be against winston’s long term development to sit a year and learn everything about the NFL, the offense? Glennon, Vjax and Evans/ASJ probably all have Koetters playbook already. I’d let glen non start. Draft Winston, then trade back up if needed to draft an edge rusher. Than two left tackles, then a guard.

    I think Fowler is an awesome player. I’m an avowed homer and so I love my St.Pete guys, although sometimes they retire and eat themselves into Pillsbury Dough Boy dimensions…I’m talking to you Sean!

    I like Fowler even more than Williams because I’ve watched Fowler and he has character as in playing hard to the whistle EVERY play even when his Gators sucked.

    But neither Fowler or Williams are worth a #1 pick of the entire draft. The ONLY way that L&L could justify that is if they scored at least two more high picks by trading down and still getting Fowler.

    But I’m pretty much with the board here….Fameis or Mariota!

    I love Winston and firmly believe he should be our pick at #1.

    With that said, I could stomach drafting MM. I see the appeal and the case for him, I just don’t agree, but I could handle it. I could also accept a “quality” trade down for an OT or DL help. Again, I doubt I would love it, but I can see the logic.

    Reaching for a DE or OT at “#1″….no, sorry. I just don’t see how that is a good move. Hopefully this is the first true smokescreen of the draft process by Tampa. I’d love to have Fowler, but not at #1.

    I’m with you except I still think they go QB….(Mariota)….because I think the Glazers have stepped in……Lovie still has their support…but he lost some autonomy when he went 2-14…..also there is Koetter….I believe he will have great input….

    Now the only reason you could be right is if Kotetter wants Glennon….and that isn’t necessarily a crazy notion…..Glennon has many characteristics of Ryan….and that would be music to Lovie’s ears if he wants a DE…..

    I think character risks rank very, vey high with Lovie Smith……he is systematically weeding out the bad actors….

    With regard to concern for character I think there are 2 significant points. (1) Hardy’s situation is significantly worse than Winstons. (2) It may be the case they didn’t want “Both”.

    I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but it certainly could be.

    I can appreciate Glennon for what he is. He’s a smart and calculated QB. He checks down, doesn’t turn the ball over, and throws the deep ball when the matchup is favorable. You can win a good number of games with a QB like that.

    What Glennon is not, is the guy who can throw into the teeth of a defense on 3rd and 13 to keep the game-winning drive alive in the 4th. Winston has the ability to do that, I can envision MM making a play in that situation….but Glennon? I don’t see it.

    I do. Possibly Glennons best game, all things considered. He took what Pitt gave him, and he’s smart enough to recognize it. I give him credit for that. Look at the play-by-play of that game. The last drive was a short field and the drive before that died with 3 strait incomplete passes from the PIT 14.

    Any QB has the ability to make a play on occasion, but if I’m a betting man…I’m not placing many bets on Glennon when times get tough.

    I’ll add to my concern of Glennon by saying this, he has 19 starts and a really good TD-INT ratio for a young QB (29-15). Of his 19 games, “9” of them were less than 200 yards passing. One was just 90 yards, but it was a bizarre win vs the Bills (my team? lol).

    He’s had two 300 yard games, a good win at PIT, and a horrendous loss vs the Ravens.

    I see a smart, conservative, disciplined QB. I don’t see the talent I would want in my starter.

    I’m guessing that all of our current and potential quarterbacks are Christians. Correct me if I am wrong. And if my daughter went on a date with Tim Tebow I’d be happy. Really happy.     That way we don’t have to suffer watching the opposing team come back and kick a field goal to win. We need someone who is going to actually run to the first down and not dive out of bounds a yard before it like a wounded giraffe.

    If the Bucs aren’t taking a QB, they need to trade down. Taking a non QB with the first pick would be a huge mistake. A collection of premium picks would go a long way towards fixing the offensive line and pass rush. It wouldn’t help the QB situation, but it’s the closest consolation.

    I think passing on Hardy only bodes well for the Winston PR campaign. It shows that they vetted Jameis and he’s all clear. They can play the Hardy was a monster card, but Jameis checked out fine.

    Probably true: the Bucs probably could have beat the Saints in the season finale, Bungals and Carolina if Napoleon D started the second half of the season… 5-11 would have slotted the Bucs back in the draft order right behind the Jets and Deadskins thus eliminating any chance of drafting Winston and probably Mariota if the Bucs thought him worthy of being picked 6th or 7th overall as DC or the Jets would grab him first….

    I’m glad they didn’t get hardy. I think it was all hardys agent blowing smoke anyway. Whatever happened to coaching up what you have? At least the of the young guys showed promise. We will be fine. I’m tired of people manufacturing things to be mad about.

    They will draft Jameis. In the off chance they don’t it will be a defensive stud not some nobody. No way they draft marriotta at this point.

    For those who like to criticize Johnny Football…..compare his 2014 year with Mike Glennons first game. This might sound like a strange comparison, but Glennon had more passing attempts in one game than Manziel had all year.

    Look at the numbers, you’ll see both scored a TD, both threw 2 INT’s, both produced approximately 200 yards, both threw around %50, and both averaged about 5 ypa.

    Johnny did this while he was whacked up….what’s Glennon’s excuse?

    Johnny may still prove to be a bust, time will tell….but I wouldn’t bet the farm thinking you’ve heard the last of him.

    C’mon man…trying to compare a QB who showed no signs of improvement in his starts last year to Glennon’s first game (against a pretty good Cardinals team in 2013)? Glennon has proved he is NFL worthy (we can debate starter or backup, but the guy will be an NFL QB for many years barring injury). Manziel will be lucky not to flame out of the NFL completely like so many other stellar Browns QB’s taken with the #22 pick.

    yes sir, I have said it and said it, lovie is the absolute worst hire, that I have seen in quite along time. this team of L&L have in my opinion have only put this team in more of a hole instead of building it up. and mark my words they will absolutely screw this draft up. I can see these guys passing on the top two QB’S and drafting an end. I do not see any positive moves they have made except drafting evens. nor do I have an confidence in lovies coaching ability. at this point thy will be lucky if they win 4 games.
