A Call For Dirk Koetter To Be Head Coach

March 24th, 2015
Jack Del Rio talked to Joe about his former offensive coordinator, new Bucs OC Dirk Koetter.

Jack Del Rio talked to Joe about his former offensive coordinator, new Bucs OC Dirk Koetter.

Joe shared some bran muffins this morning in Phoenix at the NFL Owners meetings with Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio. What a fun dude.

Anyway, Joe’s chatter turned to Del Rio’s experience with new Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Joe asked Del Rio what he Bucs fans should know about their new playcaller.

“He’s very detailed, very organized, has some real nice thoughts in terms of how to attack defenses,” Del Rio said. “He understands the NFL. He’s been in the NFL for a while now being a coordinator, being a successful coordinator. Really, he’s prepared some day to probably be a head coach. I’d like to see him get that opportunity. Bright detailed guy. He’ll do a good job down there.”

Del Rio isn’t the only guy who thinks Koetter is head coach material. Koetter has interviewed for head gigs in two of the last three offseason and, without being asked, and speaking off the record, an NFL official told Joe this morning that the Bucs likely have their next head coach in the building, Koetter, if Lovie Smith falters.

Joe’s just glad to hear the respect for Koetter in league circles.

    Dirk in 2016 !
been saying that since his hire…..

  2. tmaxcon Says:

He has my Vote! Faster the Glazers move on from the Mistake that is Lovie Smith the quicker the healing can begin.

  3. OB Says:

    Why wait, do it now

  4. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

There is a reason Atlanta didn’t promote him to Head Coach after firing Mike Smith.

  5. ChessMaster Says:

Jeez….Do the Bucs want a new offensive coordinator every year? How can you have a stable coaching staff with new coordinators and coaches every single year? Until we 3-4 of stability this team will never win more than 4 games. The Kiffin curse.

  6. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This simply means Koetter is as motivated as anybody at OBP.

It also means he may be a rent a coach. Not necessarily an awful thing if Bajakian has the chops to step up when Koetter gets his HC gig.

  7. Greg Schiano Says:

Do it now!!! Do it now!! If John Fox could be moved….Lovie should have been hit in the rear by the door on the way out!!

Koetter should be allowed to pick his on QB (not Famous Porky Jameis) and develop him as a player over time! Koetter is a younger, hungry, and detail oriented coach.

Not like the “I can’t count 12 men on the field” or “I used too many time outs” and he most definitely would NOT throw the last game just to get one (1) better pick in the draft!

FIRE LOVIE NOW!! FIRE LOVIE NOW!!

    Greg Schiano

  8. Celly Says:

All of you hoping that Dirk is the HC in 2016 are pathetic.

So you’d rather root for us to fail this year than root for success.

You people make me sick… And yes, i said you people.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

Wait until the bye-week, It will be a lot more people than just Jack Del Rio!!!

  10. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Lovie is in WAY over his head….I listened to his press conference yesterday and was underwhemled by his monotoned empty words…then by chance I listened to a long interview with #55 on all sorts of subject…a stark contrast in leadership and answering questions. Lovie is an empty suit that has been swept to this point in life by his association with the greatness of others. I don’t mean to be harsh…but that is what I see……

  11. Ray Rice Says:

How about they just swap positions if Lovemaster fails. DK goes to head coach and Lovemaster falls back to D coordinator. Is the Lovemaster that egotistical that he won’t accept a demotion? #Nawwwwwwwww

  12. lion Says:

    @MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank

That doesn’t mean a damn thing. All it says is they wanted to look for a fresh voice from outside the organization, and it has nothing to do with his ability to be a successful head coach or otherwise. This happens all of the time in sports.

  13. Tom Edrington Says:

Uh, Ray, you’re implying that they would have a $6 million defensive coordinator? I think not, contract’s a contract for head coaches, guaranteed money.

  14. foghead407 Says:

You cant pay schiano lovie and kotter. Gotta wait until these contracts r up. I cant stand how pple like schiano and micheal johnson get paid MILLIONS to not be a buc.

  15. tmaxcon Says:

    Celly

Lovie has not done anything to make this team better than the 2-14 turd sandwich he fielded last year. Addition by subtraction is BS… this team is worse period. he has not signed ONE single player that is a clear Upgrade to the person they were signed to compete with. All he has done is give ex players one last payday. lovie gets no credit for anything failing…

that 29 million in DEAD money Loive created would sure go a long way to shoring up the leagues worst line that has not gotten any better.

And those of you excited about the first waiver claim really… raise your standards. Lovie is a mistake period. move on.

  16. Phil Says:

I’m all in favor Dirk replacing Lovie. Lovie is the worst head coachthe Bucs hae ever had.

  17. Celly Says:

    tmaxcon…

    I disagree, to an extent.

Carter is an improvement over Foster, even if he doesn’t wind up playing Mike.

Moore is an improvement over L. Johnson.

The single biggest upgrade of the offseason was Koetter.

Maybe its because i feel a coach should get at least 3 seasons to try to work things out. Even though I didn’t care for Schiano and was happy he was fired, I still think he should’ve gotten 3 seasons.

You can’t keep firing a coach every other year and expect an immediate turn around.

    But that’s just me.

  18. ColoradoBuc Says:

Watch the “Bajakian” talk. He hasn’t even proven he can handle the QB Coach position in the NFL, let alone be a decent OC.

  19. lion Says:

    @tmaxcon

Please explain how Lovie has not done anything to improve the Bucs? What do you want him to do go after more worthless over-priced free agents? Yeah, because that really worked in the past.

That is such an ignorant comment. The hiring of Koetter, the subtractions of worthless players, and the additions in free agency that we did bring in will make a big difference.

  20. lion Says:

    @celly

Clearly tmaxcon doesn’t understand the simple logic that great teams build through the draft and not free agency. Also, the only reason great that teams let expensive free agents walk is because they get rewarded with high draft picks to continue building through the draft. It’s not rocket science.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

LOL – Joe just loves throwing out some red meat in the form of a creative headline to his Lovie hating wolf pack of commentors.

This is hardly a creative headline. –Joe

  22. lion Says:

All I can say is how lucky are we that we hired Koetter when we did? One has to think that if he knew Del Rio was going to become a head coach again that he would have followed him to Oakland in lieu of coming to the Bucs.

  23. drdneast Says:

LOL. Sp typical Joe. If there is one way to get the readership dial spinning it is to post something to get all the anti Lovie gaggle posting their inflammatory baseless babble.
As I have said before, Joe plays you buffoons like puppets.

  24. foghead407 Says:

Im opposite i want lovie to stay. I.think.we will be good with.jamies and kotter on offense and lovie on d. Give it a year or two. Which sucks. But its reality

  25. INDYbucsfan Says:

Let lovie build the teams defense up like dungy then koetter will take us to the Super Bowl!

  26. bucrightoff Says:

The second Koetter leaves, Lovie is once again screwed. So just fire Lovie now and give Koetter a shot this year.

  27. Stanglassman Says:

The only problem with the logic of Koetter becoming HC here is if he is successful this season Lovie is going nowhere. I think they will make a good combination but keeping him around maybe the problem.

  28. Stanglassman Says:

Bucrightoff- The only problem with that is it not going to happen.

  29. mixxx31 Says:

    @ Celly

    GET ‘EM

  30. Cover deuce Says:

The sooner we get Lovie out of the building, the better. Still can’t believe he’s allowed near this team after he sh@t the bed so thoroughly last season.

    —————————————————————————————-
lol yea sure lovie hired his replacement because he was so worried about his job. that’s a fans mentality sorry to break it too you but that’s not reality. he’s a great offensive mind but when your a head coach your job description changes just a little bit and now you have an entire team to worry about.

  32. Eric Says:

We had such a great team before Lovie ruined it.

  33. Celly Says:

    @Eric

You mean that great 4-12 record that Schiano produced?

    I what you meant was:

We had such a good team before Schiano decided to fulfill his wet dream by drafting Glennon and pushing out Freeman

I mean, that 3rd round pick couldn’t have been used on another weapon for free, like, I don’t know, a TE.

  34. Ray Rice Says:

    @Tom

I’m saying if they fire him the they are still going to be on the hook for that money. Might as well get something out of him.

  35. DrHoagy Says:

I guess I shouldn’t surprised by some of the commentary from the manic depressive fan base, I have heard the same nonsense for decades. So ,now it’s fire Lovie now and make Koetter the HC before the draft, trades, and with no clue what the opening day roster will look like and a single game has been played. All based on the opinion of a FAILED HC.
What about the GM? He has a major say about the roster and is responsible for the cap. They still have to sign Lavonte David, the draft class, and take on the contract of whoever they trade for.
With the number of holes on this team and a rookie QB coming people better prepare for a rough season. I’ll look for improvement with 8 wins being a big step forward, 6 wins progress. That is the cold hard reality. You can jump up and down, moan and groan all you want, you are just wasting energy.
Go take a Zanex and wait and see what the roster looks like before jumping off the HFB and screaming to blow it all up! AGAIN!!!!

You Freemanites have to be skiing as much as Josh did. Holy crap let it go, Josh ruined himself because hitting the slopes beat hitting the classroom. But keep blaming Schiano, after all he was the one who had 20 turnovers in his final 8 games as Bucs QB (wait a minute…)

  37. BirdDoggers Says:

If the Bucs take a QB, the number one priority should be continuity. If the team is successful under Lovie and Koetter gets a HC gig somewhere, Bajakian should be the one groomed to take over as offensive coordinator. The thing a rookie QB needs is a system change right away.

  38. BirdDoggers Says:

Not a chance of this happening…..you keep posting fire Lovie….but nobody has listened….I don’t know whether to admire your persistence or question your sanity…

  41. bucs4lyfe Says:

yes because every stable franchise fires their coach after one bad season or like 30 days before the draft. I have blind faith in the regime yes because there is a track record of atleast great defense…..much more of a track record than the last two coaches and more experience that the last two offensive defensive and head coaches of the last two regimes combined. but if we have another bad season I wont stand in anyone’s way of bashing lovie, I defend him now because it’s got to get better and honestly atleast theres a history we can see…..I want no more experiments at head coach

I know this is hard for your to grasp your head around, but Freeman is the last QB to lead us to a winning record…something the infamous Glennon has yet to do.

He also couldn’t manage to beat out Freeman or McCown (twice) for the starting role.

When we find another QB that can lead us to a winning record, then i’ll be all about that one, but until then, i’ll continue to be a “Freemanite”

  43. bucrightoff Says:

Where did I mention Glennon once? I’m just sick of everyone acting like Josh Freeman was wronged. If he was so wronged, why is he more blacklisted form the league than Schiano is?

And using your logic, you want Raheem as coach right now. He, after all, was the last coach to lead us to a winning record. Are you pumping Raheems tires every thread? I doubt it.

  44. Couch Fan Says:

I know this is hard for your to grasp your head around, but Freeman is the last QB to lead us to a winning record…something the infamous Glennon has yet to do.

    —————————————–
Technically your right but considering he hasent started a 16 game season yet, i think its fair to say he hasent had a chance…

Schiano drafted Glennon because he didnt believe in Freeman. Lovie is drafting a QB because he, at least he doesnt appear to, believe in Glennon. If you dont believe in your QB then you draft his replacement…

Just because Freeman was the last QB to lead us to a winning season doesn’t mean you should stick with him. Anyone with us seen what happened last year, and it wasn’t Schiano’s fault. He did what he thought was in the best interest of the team. Right or wrong you can’t fault him for that.

I for one thank Schiano for getting rid of that cancer known as Freeman.

  45. Couch Fan Says:

    Anyone with eyes*

  46. bucs4lyfe Says:

I don’t think freeman was wronged and off field meltdown aside I think he was simply a better quarterback and that’s saying a lot considering how inaccurate he was. people just stop talking like accuracy makes you a starting nfl quarterback, josh mccown had a couple games where he couldn’t miss. there was a game last year mccown was 16-21 with a 91 qbr and 81% pass rating and it was a loss. quoting stats are grate and accuracy is important but it’s not the most important stat. I would tend to go with the stat of wins and losses. glennon is 5-13 in games he started and you can come up with all the excuses in the world but sooner or later it has to fall on the quarterback. not sure why it falls on josh freeman and not mike glennon. im completely against an average quarterback when you have the chance to draft one with a higher ceiling and im sure glennon wont be able to exist on the roster with the first pick overall and him not be salty like his brother

  47. Espo Says:

Look at so many of you hoping our coach fails. Bunch of A holes. Worst fan base in the league.

  48. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Celly

You can’t keep firing a coach every other year and expect an immediate turn around.

    But that’s just me.

As you can see it’s not just you! Add me to you and TBBF.

I just have a problem taking opinion over “scoreboard”. Lovie has a record. It’s specific. Last year sucked but his previous record indicates he knows how to coach in this league.

A trip to the SB…only 50 coaches have made it…is one thing…opinions on the other hand are a dime a dozen. Hell now with JBF we don’t even have to fork over the dime. They’re FREE!!!

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Waaay back when the Falcons head coach was fired…before ANYONE ELSE here suggested Dirk Koetter as our Offensive Coordinator, I made the suggestion…and I also said that if he does well enough to get offers after a couple years, he could replace Lovie if need be.

Right again. And again. And again.

  50. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’ve said the same thing about the constant firing of head coaches. And there are certain people here that want a new coach every year. And I mean every year. Even after they get the one they want.

  51. bucs4lyfe Says:

if lovie has another bad season like last year I don’t think he’ll be able to use the quarterback as an excuse. I think glennon is garbage but he wasn’t the reason schiano got fired. its not about that position as much as it is the direction of the team pointing in a positive direction across the board

  52. LargoBuc Says:

Yeah but if Koetter is succesful then we likely finish with a good enough record to give Lovie another year.
6-10. Anything less than that and Lovie will be gone.

We have to agree to disagree on the players being upgrades or not. I have no confidence in Jenkins, Melton, Conte or Carter being able to make an impact. Moore may or may not be an upgrade to LJ. I am a LJ fan as a person but not a player.

As far as switching coaches every year, I agree stability is important that being said Lovie has clearly not learned anything from is time in chicago and is making identical mistakes here. He is costing this team long term with the mistakes he is making. Sorry but nice guy mediocre coach.

so at what point do the glazers make a move after he continues to make mistake after mistake and it’s harder to recover from and the roster is full of prove it deal cripples that are specific to Lovies outdated system and philosophy. does not sound like good business to me. It’s a tough call. I personally am done with Lovie. he will do more damage than he is worth. nothing personal I want to see the bucs win before I am on social security that’s all.

  55. tmaxcon Says:

    lion

you have no clue what your are talking about. Lovie has never built a team through the draft or free agency. He is a walking personnel disaster. Get you facts straight before you speak. Lovie has not ever built a team he destroys them.
