Incognito Still “An Option”

After acquiring All-Pro guard Logan Mankins today, GM Jason Licht didn’t rule out anything more.

Read into it what you will. Less than 24 hours after Bucs general manager Jason Licht and coach Lovie Smith danced with sleazy guard Richie Incognito, Licht pulled the trigger on a trade he has been working on for a month with Bill Belicheat to acquire All-Pro guard Logan Mankins.

On face value, it sure seems like the Bucs decided not to pursue Incognito, but in a quickly assembled press conference to talk about the Mankins deal today, Licht all but said writing off Incognito would be premature.

After waxing poetic about what an outstanding leader and locker room guy Mankins, who Licht knows from his New England days, in the very next sentence Licht advised not to close the book (yet) on Incognito.

When pressed, Licht said that bringing in Incognito is still “an option.” But he said no more, other than that the Bucs told Incognito they would be in contact with him if they wanted to continue down that road.

Oh, and here is something to chew on: Licht said he has been speaking with “six or seven” other teams about all positions. Maybe Licht isn’t quite finished wheeling and dealing?

Is he still an option… or was he just the bait for the patriots to give away Mankins

  2. RastaMon Says:

    Free Richie !!!

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

I like this guy. he’s definitely not afraid to go after what he thinks will make us a winner. That’s not to say he won’t have some flops. Cousins definitely didn’t pan out. But he seems like a legit GM that knows what he’s doing.

  4. TheShaz Says:

Even if they sign Richie – he was not in any NFL camp, he is not in game shape.

I cant see him starting right away.

  5. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

RastaMon need to get those shirts fired up

  6. andres Says:

one of those better be DE. Bucs are definitely NOT SET there.

  7. Buczilla Says:

RastaMon and fired up in the same sentence = WIN

You can tell he is very High on the Bucs this year.

    @Dallas

Lovie’s whipping boy must have lashes all over his back huh? A lot of people with common sense said to wait to see the 53 man roster, there’s a sample.

I think this will be a huge move for the Bucs. I can picture everyone on offense with a big smile besides Cousins. This guy s

  9. Patrickbucs Says:

My bad this guy seems to be getting it

  10. RastaMon Says:

2 Pro Bowl guards are better than 1….

  11. Nick Says:

Mankins, EDS and Dotson don’t seem like the type to suffer fools. Incognito would all of a sudden be low man on the totem pole and not the “savior” that Mankins gets to be now.

  12. safeflt1 Says:

Bucs are quickly becoming relevant once again. I too have to appalude Licht and Lovie for instilling hope to Buc fans once again.

  13. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Tampa might still sign Incognito, ya never know ….

  14. Buchead407 Says:

    Agreed

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

and bucs tried to get BOONE but niners trying to probably get a #1 for that

    Rich says:

    “Give me Frreeee”

  17. robert9 Says:

sign ritchie. him and mankins are old and just stop gaps till our young guys learn how to block.

beside their both old, and one will probably get injured. 32 yr old 300lb linemen…….can you say knees?

    tampa knows knees right lol

  18. BucsQcCity Says:

It give Licht leverage for Incognito on their term. I wouldn’t be surprised if they sign him and force him to do some charity work.

The players are preparing the move: ASJ said he trained this spring with Incognito and he have no problem, Foster loves him, mcCown will use this as a teaching lesson on forgiveness for his kids, McCoy support Lovie..

    Just watch

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Guarantee you that 4th rounder was offered to the 49ers for Boone first.

  20. Capt.Tim, Back from Davie Jones's Locker Says:

Licht is very quickly becoming my Favorite GM! So refreshing from the impotent Mark Dominick, who would agree about the obvious holes in the Lineup- then do nothing!
Licht sees an issue- then aggressively works to correct it!
Well done Sir!! Well done indeed!

Can you imagine if we still sign Incognito? We would have gone from worst guards in the league, to best pair!

    Lovie! Lovie! Lovie!
    Licht! Licht! Licht!

Just loving being a Bucs fan, since the day these guys were hired! This is going to be a great year!
    Thanks L&L

  21. nate Says:

Okay now tradefor a defensive end please!

  22. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Sign Incognito, cut Cousins and Meredith, keep Johnson and Omameh as backups.

  23. MR. T Says:

I think Thursday’s game will determine if they pursue Richie. They will have a chance to evaluate the new guy Johnson in a game situation. If they like what they see then forget Richie, if not, he may still be an option. We’ll see.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

I doubt anyone will sign Incognito until after the first game, otherwise by the CBA they’d be liable for his full salary if he doesn’t work out.

  25. Dreambig Says:

Making an assumption that incognito has at least grown up a little through his mess, I would still consider signing him. Can you imagine a oline that can actually create holes for Doug Martin, pass block for the dunkaneers? That would be a hole new deal for this team!

  26. Orca Says:

It’s smart for them to not rule out anything, at least publicly… But I really hope they’ve ruled out Incognito internally. Let’s see how Rishaw Johnson does.

  27. getaclue Says:

    Who’s the rock star now?

  28. Zam Says:

    please no Incognito please

How foolish would L&L look to have gone all offseason without assembling their 2 starting guards 9 days before the season starts? Just to save face they can’t make any more moves at guard.

  29. Buc-O's 82 Says:

Wow Joe…the poles spoke yesterday and 80% was in favor of Richie and here you are since then trying to convince us that we don’t know how to think….just like BSPN…

Joe has done no such thing. Joe’s opinion is his own. –Joe

  30. Ernest T. Bass Says:

Thursday is Rishaw’s chance. Show something and you are the starting RG, if not sign Cog! The o line could be nasty with Cog. ASJ trained with Cog in the offseason, said Cog is in great shape!

  31. Dmajik Says:

Gorrer was cut? Those 6 or 7 teams JL is talking to better have a decent CB to offer up. We’re hurting, even with Jenkins and Verner healthy.

  32. Arealbucsfan Says:

I wouldnt go as far as calling Mankins & Incognito a “best pair”. Incognito has never been great anyways. Add the fact he hasn’t played football for a year and most likely switching to a new position (RG). I just dont get the hype for this guy. Other than that, id still like to give him a shot
