Gameday Tampa BayAugust 28th, 2014
Preseason Game 4
Redskins at Tampa Bay
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
TV: Live on WFLA-TV, Channel 8.
Radio: Buccaneers Radio Network (WDAE-AM 620 and WFUS-FM 103.5 in Tampa-St.Petersburg region); SiriusXM Channel 136.
Weather: Only a 20 percent chance of rain at kickoff with a temperature of 87 degrees. Little change is expected throughout the game.
Odds: Per FootballLocks.com, Tampa Bay -2.5.
Outlook: No starters will play for Washington, says Skins head coach Jay Gruden. As for the Bucs? Well, Lovie Smith wouldn’t go that far on Wednesday. But regardless, starters are not expected to play much. New All-Pro guard Logan Mankins definitely won’t play, and Mike Glennon will start, per Lovie. Maybe, just maybe, cornerback Alterraun Verner gets some reps as he continues to get in game shape after a training camp hamstring pull.
Sadly, the fourth preseason game is the matted mongrel of NFL games. It flat out stinks, featuring soon-to-be bellhops, grad students, grave diggers, refrigerator movers and gym teachers.
For the Bucs, Joe’s looking to see what defensive ends Steven Means and Larry English can deliver, assuming Means plays on his formerly strained groin. This also is a big night for bubble captain Jeff Demps, who has yet to impress all preseason. Demps should get the full workload at running back, and it’s likely Lovie rests to returner Solomon Patton, the rookie who appears to have one the punt and kick return gig. Joe’s also wondering if recently disciplined Jonathan Casillas will see action at linebacker. His backup, Danny Lansanah, played well in Buffalo and appears to be a favorite of Lovie.
Keep your eyes on the right guard Rishaw Johnson, acquired from the Chiefs last week. He didn’t play on the O-line against Buffalo because he had just arrived with the team. Johnson could become the opening-day starter and should (hopefully) be able to dominate against backups tonight.
It’s still unclear who will be calling the offensive plays for coordinator Jeff Tedford, who is out after a significant medical procedure of some sort this week. The Bucs haven’t provided details.
Final cuts are Saturday at 4 p.m.
