Bucs Sign Former Glennon Sidekick

August 21st, 2014

Lovie Smith, Jason Licht, Bucs scouts and Bucs fans are on high alert for any offensive linemen that can help Tampa Bay. Yes, that holds true for any position, but keeping it real, the Bucs have a serious need up front.

Today, the Bucs made a move to sign a guard. And that always deserves attention, given the state of the O-line.

The newest Buccaneers is R.J. Mattes, a former versatile standout at North Carolina State blocking for mighty Mike Glennon. Mattes wasn’t drafted but landed with the Patriots in 2013, and he managed to find a way to hang around before he got cut before this year’s training camp. He only played in preseason for New England last year.

No, Joe’s not expecting much from Mattes, but Joe will keep an eye out for him the third quarter on Saturday in Buffalo.

    oy veh…..

  2. Dooley Says:

Well, if this Mattes kid can keep Glennon/Kafka clean then why not, it’s not like we don’t have any irreplaceable talent at the position.

  3. eric Says:

oh wow another band aid joe was just curious what you think of Johnny the most exciting player in years Manziel so far LMAO! Just so you know Glennon is not the answer but he never looked as bad as Joe’s Gloden Child! LOL

Joe doesn’t spend time analyzing Cleveland Browns training camp. Perhaps that’s what life is like in hell. Johnny Football is not a Buccaneer. He looked bad Monday night, but so did his teammates and that’s a tiny sample for a 21-year-old QB transitioning from a wide open college offense.–Joe

  4. Orca Says:

He was cut before training camp this year by the Patriots and apparently no one picked him up. Seems like a weird move unless they think there’s some talent there that everyone else has overlooked (unlikely)… We’re past the point of adding camp-meat as there’s a cutdown date coming up next week. So, I’m not sure what this guy gives us, except experience practicing with the Patriots for a year.

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

Well, if Mattes can give Glennon, aka The Whiz Kid, less leaks in the O line then more power to him.

  6. jo_mama Says:

Get Ryan Mallett and trade Mike Evens or VJax

  7. Orca Says:

^^ put down the crack pipe @jo_mama

plus whatever he was using the rolled up bill for, amirite?

Not even regular season yet and Johnny is already getting the excuses that were not even considered about Glennon.

He supposed to make everyone around him better. If the rest of the team sucked, it’s because Johnny sucks, and absolutely NO other reason!! Aint that what we have been told for 6 months now?

  10. Orca Says:

My guess is the purpose of signing this Mattes guy is to give him a tryout to see if he is practice squad worthy.

  11. DallasBuc Says:

Lovie and his lapdog GM are implementing their master plan perfectly! Pieces are really falling into place now.

  12. willie.D Says:

instead of drafting 7 offensivI also think trading for ponder would have been a good ideaen a good idea. I also think trading for ponder would have been a good idea. a former first rounder with a big chip on his shoulder could be a good thing

  13. DallasBuc Says:

Willie- competition at any starting FA position on this team is strictly prohibited!

mallet sucks what are you saying joe_mama woooooooooooooooooow

  16. BucsfaninChina Says:

Why trade for Mallett when you’ll be able to pick him up when the Pats cut him?

Johnny boy has just been rolling up too many dollar bills lately

  17. biggun Says:

Mattes = future is near for the cannon!

  18. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

the Bucs r not running the tampa-2 they r running the D that lovie implemented as coach of the Bears and this season is about getting the D up to speed and training the O. Be patient, the Bucs will have some entertaining games especially late in the season when understanding of the system kicks in but the Bucs will have a losing record. 5-11 or 4-12 but a lot of close games.

jo_mama Says: Get Ryan Mallett and trade Mike Evens or VJax

Dude that is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read, you either know nothing about football or just want to stir the pot.

The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says has it exactly right on the Jo_Mama waste of space. There just is no accounting for stupidity.

  21. passthebuc` Says:

over the years we have been able to pick some talent off the waiver scrap heap. Maybe we can pick up some potential from teams that are loaded up front.

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Glennon sucks.

    .

    So far.

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

He may not even make the team. They probably want to take a look after Glennon mentioned him.

  24. jo_mama Says:

    Great Teams have Great QB’s.

The Pats have kept Mallett on the Roster for 4 years working under brady.

He was supposed to be a first round pick but he screwed up his interviews.

I think we all in agreement, we are not going anywhere this season. McClown is not the Answer, Glennon is an unknown so what is the downside to bring in Mallatt?

Look at the best teams who have ever been considered a Dynasty.

They all have the same thing in common – a Superhero for a Quarterback.

If Mallatt does not work out we are still going to suck this year.

Mallett is the Aaron Rodgers to the Pats when Farve left.

The Bucs has always been short sighted when it comes to Quarterback.

  25. ToesOnTheLine Says:

    “Glennon sucks. so far”

He’s still looked more in command of this vanilla looking Bucs offense than your man McCown. McCown has better escspability I’ll give him that, and maybe with what the O line has showed us so far that is the sole reason Lovie starts McCown (at least for a few games)

  26. ToesOnTheLine Says:

“5-11 or 4-12 but a lot of close games.”

And that is any better than last season how? Lovie is being touted as a massive upgrade at HC and supposedly the Bucs lost so many games from being out coached. I would at least think that if this is actually the case that 7-9 or better should be a minimal expectation. No free passes in a win now or else league

  27. Jbeachbuc Says:

Was ” Joe” watchin’ a Clevland Browns NFL preseason game against somebody other than Tampa? I don’t believe it…. ???

    ??

  28. TBFAN813 Says:

Trading either VJax or or Evans for Mallet is one of the dumbest things I’ve read on this site in a while and that is saying a lot. If the team does indeed underachieve as many people on here are predicting I would rather draft a quarterback in the upcoming draft and keep the top two receivers but maybe I’m crazy. As far as Glennon goes looking ok against players that probably won’t even be in the league in about a week isn’t saying much he wasn’t much different then what he looked like last year.
