Tanney No “Trick Shot” QB To Jason Licht

May 22nd, 2014

tanneyYeah, Lovie Smith long ago said he wanted to take four quarterbacks to training camp. Yes, Lovie also was clear he’s a two-quarterbacks-on-the-final-roster kind of guy.

But you never know. So the signing of Alex Tanney yesterday is no “trick shot” novelty.

TV affiliate last night that Tanney is thoroughly “deserving of a shot.” Licht said he knows Tanney as the Cowboys quarterback who worked over the Cardinals in preseason last year.

Licht was the No. 2 man in the Cardinals personnel department when Tanney went 14-for-19 for 136 yards in the second half against Arizona last August. Here’s a clip of Tanney’s short touchdown pass.

If nothing else, Tannye’s got experience in multiple offenses, having spent time with the Cowboys, Browns and Chiefs. Perhaps he can be anther voice to help mold the “quarterback of the future” while he fights for a job.

As for the “trick shot” stuff, the Bucs’ GM has seen the video.

“We’re not having him throw balls into basketball hoops and moving cars yet,” Licht said.

According to Patt McMannamon’s article on ESPN, Johnny Manziel has been inconsistent in practice.

Love it. This makes the Mike Glennon investment from L and L that much more solid.

Aside from your comment being ridiculous on many levels, Joe requests that all commenters make an effort to stay remotely on the topic of the post, especially out of the gate. –Joe

  2. MadMax Says:

yeah, “last august”….na, he not supplanting Glennon anytime soon, lol.

  3. Couch Fan Says:

I’m not impressed considering the 2nd half of all pre-season games are usually being played by future bag boys and burger flippers. Not impressed but who knows. I am sure some people will jump on the band wagon hoping and praying he beats out Glennon.

  4. biff barker Says:

Must stay on topic…. must stay on topic….

If the Browns dumped this guy, his future may be brighter than I thought possible. Meanwhile, we have a camp arm.

  5. Couch Fan Says:

On a side note, NFL AM just said Lovie will be on a show tonight. Missed which show they said but think its Total Access.

I find it hilarious that there were a lot of comments on this site about how Joe talks about Johnny Football too much, then some of you continue to troll the website mentioning him in irrelevant articles. I’m looking directly at you Bucfan#237. There’s only one website that even comes close to the amount of content that Joebucsfan does and that’s Pewter Report which wants you too pay for a subscription. Sit back and enjoy the fantastic FREE coverage that Joe provides here and stop trolling.

There is always a surprise cut before the season and I hope that it is mike glennon. if Tampa bay fans think that mike glennon is the answer then don’t put lovie smith on the hot seat next season after the bucs go 4-12 again. josh will get injured and glennon will have to play and the quaterback of last years offense will lead this team, starring down vincent jackson. he will also cause you fans to think that mike evans is running the wrong routes and that asj is lazy on the field. all of this will be done while the defense plays it’s heart out keeping most of the games close needing only a field goal or 1 touchdown to win. but it won’t be glennon’s fault the defense should have scored a touchdown

  8. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

sorry could not stay on topic, i’ll get better i promise.

  9. Couch Fan Says:

    yes it is Total Access

  10. GoNoles Says:

Glennon hasn’t shown enough to be an NFL starter (your words Joe)…but..Johny Football cant even beat out the Browns #2 QB! 🙂

  11. Fishfries Says:

If Mike Glennon ever needs some extra motivation he should just come to this site.

  12. Tnew Says:

Rather than making the post an indictment on JF realize that it is more an indictments on how difficult it is to learn the qb position on the fly. Tanney most likely is just a camp arm which is more than can be said about the Wyoming kid with the tebowesque throwing motion. But he can do way more at that position than the alternative.

Those of you wishing ill will towards mike Glennon just stop saying your a bucs fan and stick to fantasy football. By all accounts he is a great not good locker room guy, dedicated to the franchise and one of the hardest working guys on the team. Consider that as a rookie with poor offensive coaching (count me among those who thinks Freeman was mishandled, talk about poor mentoring, he had no mentor even at the head coach position) limited weapons and an underperforming offensive line, he still managed 4-8 record and 19-9 td/int ratio.

  13. MR.T Says:

If Tanney had any great potential he would still be on the roster of one of his former teams. If he couldn’t cut it in Cleveland with all the QB woes they’ve had then his chances of being anything more than a camp arm here are mighty slim. Motivation, nah, if Glennon needs a good laugh he should just come to this site and read some of the comments that have been made about him. As I have said a number of times before he will be a good NFL QB

So was Bret Favre his first few years. It means nothing.

Say…btw….Mike Glennon has been as well and he has a season more experience. I notice you don’t hold that up in front of people.

I’m personally not jumping on any bandwagons, but you act as if it would be a bad thing if he beat out Glennon.

If he’s good enough (which I doubt) to provide valid competition, we should want the best one to win. It isn’t about right or wrong. It’s about what’s best for the team.

If Alex Tanney somehow blossoms and becomes very good, it would be a good thing. I am always in favor of a player making it impossible to get cut because he plays so good. If he does so well he forces the Bucs to keep 3 QBs, that’s a great thing.

Again, in this case I don’t believe it will happen….but I would not be opposed to it.

    ————————————–

No, it would be an absolutely great thing for a Browns QB castoff to be better than our QB of the Future. Whatever was I thinking?

  17. SAMCRO Says:

Once again it’s ABG (anything but Glennon). If Licht’s grandmother was tossing pigskins around, I would have no-doubt that some of you would be clamouring for her to be the next air apparent. (including our infallible host).

JOE knows QB’s <–for some of you (who don't get it), that's actually sarcasm.

  18. Couch Fan Says:

Hell while were at it lets use empty trash cans as 1st down markers so he knows where to throw the football and we’ll be all set.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

    Camp arm, probably nothing more.
@Newbucsfan- Are you a new Bucs fan? It sure doesn’t sound like it, being a Bucs fan, that is. All rhetoric aside, we’re going into this season with McCown/Glennon at QB. If you’re a fan, you better get used to seeing and rooting for those names. Otherwise, you should change your name to “Nobucsfan”!(and yes, I’ll be here all week!).

  20. Chef Paul Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai Says: “So was Bret Favre his first few years. It means nothing.”

Are you sure about that? Means nothing? Seems to me, a rookie QB is supposed to come into the league and set the world on fire. Well I just dont know how someone can have “it” if they have some growing pains in the NFL. Face it. Manzeel is inconsistent today, so that means he’s doomed as a QB for the rest of eternity.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can hit a guy right in the gut with a ball when a truck is going 90 MPH too….Oh, I forgot….I have to be in the cab to do it….

  22. Hawk Says:

I can bounce a football off the goalpost, ricochet off the jumbotron, propel it off the wingtip of an F-18, roll down the length of the roof of the Goodyear blimp… DANG!, I forgot to put out the garbage can!

  23. Espo Says:

It seems like this guy really gave himself a bad impression by filming himself goofing off. Guess what? Everyone has done something like that at one point or another, he’s just better at it. I don’t expect him to make the team but if we do end up with 3 on the final roster, I’m glad to have him compete with Kafta and glad noodle arm is gone.

Not sure how the trick shot video was a “bad impression.” Just a college kid having some fun, showing off his skills. It’s not like he was taking selfies with a joint dangling from his mouth flashing gang signs.

Johnny Football did a trick shot video, too. Haven’t read one word anywhere that he put out a bad impression because of the video.

  25. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Why are you bringing up Johnny Football JOE!

  26. Espo Says:

The general vibe I get from fans is that he is only good for tricks.

Of course. I mean the Bucs cut Steve Young because he had no future…..

  28. Hawk Says:

Young wasn’t traded because the Bucs didn’t think he had talent.
Steve Young was traded to the 49ers because Ray Perkins did not want a QB to run. Watch film of Testeverdes’ early games and see Perkins screaming in his ear every time he crosses the LOS. I can still remember hearing him shout, “We don’t pay you to run, if you can’t find anyone, throw it away or eat it!”(or something to that effect). Perkins didn’t want a QB to get injured doing something that a RB is supposed to do. It didn’t make a lot of sense (even less sense in todays’ game), but it was the way Coach Perkins wanted to run things.
