Mallett Deal Paving Way For Glennon Trade?

May 8th, 2014
"Blessings are coming, my son."

“Blessings are coming, my son.”

Patriots beat writer Tom Curran is bringing word this evening that New England backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, who many view as potential starter material, is likely to be sent to Houston to reunite with Texans coach Bill O’Brien.

Mallett, 25, is in the final year of his four year rookie contract, and Bill Belicheat likely wants to get something for Mallett and groom a new backup for Tom Brady. Is that backup Mike Glennon?

Considering Belicheat and Greg Schiano are scary close, and Schiano touted Glennon as a “future star” with a “grinder” of a work ethic this week on NFL Network, one would think Belicheat might be ready to deal with his former personnel sidekick in New England, Bucs general manager Jason Licht.

Hey Jason, if you can get a third-rounder now, make the deal! Mallett was a third round pick of the Pats in 2011.

    Hillarious!

    Nothing less than a 2nd!!!

  4. bucrightoff Says:

The Pats are one of, if not the single smartest organizations in the NFL. They’ll be paying no more than 5th for Glennon, if they are at all.

Or course this is just Belichick trying to eff with the draft at the last monent.

  5. Mathius Says:

Does Bill-a-cheat really believe Glennon can be the future behind Brady?

The Pats have 2 fourth rounders, both are near the bottom. Could the Bucs be hornswaggled by the Pats again? The fact that Darth Sidious would contemplate the trade should make Bucs fans not want it to happen. Very few NFL organizations come out atop of a trade like the Pats.

  6. eric Says:

As long as we don’t draft Jonny Football so the JFM (Johnny Football Mob) can hopefully be put out of their misery who and the hell wants a guy who has no ceiling he may be great or has no floor he may suck badly trade down unless someone falls back in your lap get extra picks the O-Line in the middle right now is arguably the worst in the NFL our second WR will not start for another team in the NFL, yet you want to draft a QB to sit on the bench lol what a joke!

  7. StAugBuc Says:

If the Bucs draft a QB, the whole world knows Glennon is toast. What bargaining power is that? A 4th would be a blessing at that point.

  8. Rob Says:

If Bill Belichick wants Mike Glennon, that’s proof enough that you should be keeping him.

  9. bigpoppabuc Says:

    Exactly, Rob.

    Rob said:

“If Bill Belichick wants Mike Glennon, that’s proof enough that you should be keeping him.”

Not necessarily. The Pats run a very different offense from what Tedford seems to be preparing and they look for prototype pocket passers. Glennon is very much in the Brady/Mallett mold of QB’s who are not mobile threats and who aren’t asked to do what Tedford asks of his QB’s.

The system determines what type of QB you need. Players often fail because they aren’t used properly. If Glennon remained in Tampa he would fail in Tedford’s offense. The Bucs are being smart here by tailoring their personnel to what Tedford and Lovie want to do.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Yeah…because Patriot backups have done so well.

    Not.

  12. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Dewey Jesus if the Texans make a deal for an actual career backup Mallet that coaching staff and GM just made anything Tampa had look like rocket scientists. A fleecing extraordinaire by Belichick only made more brilliant if the Bucs are actually dumb enough to trade Glennon for anything less than a 3rd round pick (which is still dumb unless Glennon absolutely doesn’t fit whatever offense the Bucs will actually run)

  13. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Joe will hopefully resign as president and CEO of the Manziel Fan Club tonight after the draft with one last article blasting the Bucs and the entire NFL for not seeing the light regarding his JFF. How could everyone possibly see his JFF as a scrawny little troll, when Joe knows for certain that he’s actually a sparkly unicorn who farts rainbows and fairy dust? What a bunch of meanies we all are for not loving his little Johnny with all our hearts!

  14. Brandon Says:

If Billicheat wants Glennon that bad maybe we should just keep him and see how he turns out. Just a thought.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

If L&L are planning on getting a QB in rounds 1,2, or 3 trade Glennon. The kid deserves a shot somewhere else. It sure seems L&L are washing their hands of him. For a 3rd round rook thrown to the wolves in the middle of the season he didn’t do too bad. If they could get a 3rd or 4th for him that’d be great but we all know Licht would only want a 2015 6th rounder.

  16. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Oh, and hopefully Joe writes his “Goodbye World” letter in all caps Comic Sans!

  17. JA Says:

    Too good to be true.

  18. Stevek Says:

    Glennon is a boss

  19. Tnew Says:

Anyone recall the story behind joe Montana’s backup

  20. Nick H Says:

HAHAHAH preferring a QB with who has never started a game at the NFL level and hasn’t proven spit over Glennon.

    This is JoeBucsFan logic everyone.

    Hilarious.

  21. Vincente Says:

Every time a player leaves the bucs to go to New England they do a lot better. If they are eyeballing Glennon than keep him here and pick up a WR in the draft. Don’t let talent do good for some other team. What if McCown gets hurt at least we KNOW that Glennon can come in and smooth things out.

  22. Nick H Says:

OK I’ll admit he didn’t say let’s get Mallett sorry sorry

  23. Nick H Says:

My mind is all over the place with this nonsense, I can’t even read straight right now. I stand by my previous statements, all this ridiculousness makes people insane.

  24. bucrightoff Says:

Oh look, it’s already being said there’s nothing to Glennon to New England

  25. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Less than two hours until we hear with the 7th pick in the NFL draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Mike Evans WR Texas A&M…only made even better if Manziel is still sitting in the Green room at our pick. In all honesty I’m hoping the Bucs get a good offer to trade back, but I am also concerned about that scenario because Lovie is average at best at drafting and a Licht is a wildcard.

  26. Nick H Says:

Doesn’t mean it won’t happen eventually but, yeah, shocker to read that lol.

I pray our terrible QB decisions stop some day, starting with keeping Glennon even if he’s a backup.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

FLBoyInDallas…can you please explain to me how you know what kind of offense Tedford wants to run? Obvious I missed it somewhere.

If he’s not around. Can anyone else tell me where Tedford has said what he’s looking for in a QB to run his offense? Because during his Cal days it seems he favored the drop back passer more than the mobile one.

  28. Nick H Says:

Trading back… I would feel a little robbed but would have great confidence in the increased # of chances to hit the lotto. They believe in building through the draft so more draft picks instead of less should be their preference.

    Less than 2 hours….

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Holy crap. I just had terrible thought everyone. What if Manziel does somehow slip past the first round? Then we’re going to get hit with more JF articles tomorrow morning. Holy CRAP!

  30. ToesOnTheLine Says:

BTW I loved reading the comments of non Tampa folks on Glennon in that link that bucrightoff posted. I still am amazed who most everyone else realizes Glennon played well with the hand he was dealt while a few stubborn to the end Freemanites…I mean Bucs fans refuse to give the guy a chance to build on a strong rookie season

  31. WalkdaPlank Says:

@1987 – don’t say such things! You’ll give people nightmares!

  32. Buc1987 Says:

ToesOnTheLine …it’s VERY simple my man. I’ll explain it for you.
Schiano loves Glennon. Fans hate Schiano. Fans think Glennon is garbage, because Schiano thinks he’s good.

Not all the fans think like that, but I think that has a lot to do with it.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

WalkdaPlank….yah it kind of gave me a slight headache too.lol

  34. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Old news. It was on Yahoo sports last week.

  36. buc4lyfe Says:

Who’s giving a 2nd rounder for captain checkdown? Can’t dup Chicago anymore because they are under new management. Package him with a mid rounder too move up with a team like the rams who have two high 1st rounders…p.s. seems Leonard Johnson with Glennon please

  37. buc4lyfe Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine

Delusional…so you know about buffalo or Cleveland or Texans? YOU THE FAN and some people from out of town Think he played well and that means what? A new GM and HC came in watched tape (something they get paid to do) And immediately sent him the bench and using him as trade bait but you think he’s good and should lead us……ok

Not a fan of the Patriots. If Glennon is let go, to New England will suck imo.

  40. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Last time I checked the camp competition hasn’t started yet. McCown is the starter as of now, but the best QB will win the job. Or is that delusional to think the Bucs won’t start whoever they feel gives them the best chance to win?

Proof? Glennon could still be in the plans.

I’m sure we’ll draft Manziel @ 7, just like we picke Norris. Claibourne in 2011.

    If we don’t trade back:

Clowney, Mack , Watkins, Robinson, Mathews, Evans, Donald or Lewan. Book it, Joes, book it Dewmig, book it.

  42. tgregs Says:

@Buc 1987 Well said. I hope it’s not true but if so, it will be amusing when he beats proves Lovie is clueless.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    lol at all of you.

  44. owlykat Says:

Do you remember when Lovie says he wants athletes at every position and Tedford talked about SPEED in space that he is going to run this year? That was hint one and hint two. Then when Lovie declared that Josh was his starting QB, that was hint 3 that they have watched the film and Glennon is not their idea of a Franchise QB of the future. When Licht said there is a QB in the draft that he wants but not the person you would think–that is hint 4 that the guy is not Glennon, because Glennon is not in the draft. So why did Lovie say Glennon was excellent? They realize they will have to trade off Glennon and they want to get the highest draft choice for him they can get. They gave all those hints because now they can say the reason they aren’t keeping their “excellent QB” is because they know he won’t fit their system. That is just my analysis of what has been said, but in about an hour and a half we should have a very good idea if my analysis is correct.

  45. Novak Says:

Yeah, they really hosed us in the Alex Smith deal.

A 3rd-rounder is supposed to be eventually be a starter. If we can get that for a backup like Glennon, jump all over it.

  46. Brandon Says:

I stated that when O’Brien took the Texans job that Mallet was likely headed to Houston for a 2nd or 3rd. It would make sense for the Pats to replace one big stiff QB with a huge arm with another big stiff QB without a huge arm.

  47. chrisbucsfan Says:

lovie just said glennon is the qb of the future so theres that

  48. White Tiger Says:

Why the excitement over our back-up? Captain check down is as good as he’s going to get, upside isn’t great. He’s a game manager.

If you’re expecting to trade him to the Patriots – you obviously don’t understand that Belichick doesn’t “need” anybody….if we send him there, then Bill gets a back-up, and what price do you think Bill rates a back-up, 6th round?

I’ m sick over the pick, we’re about to see “Chicago Bears II” there is no commitment to offense. Johnny Gootball could have been bad, instead, we get the second coming of….Vincent Jackson (who is still under contract) – could have had Aaron Donald – but instead we got the ONE position this draft is chock FULL of – WR.

I get it now, we’ve been punked. Any minute now Tony Dungy (the pre-Peyton Manning Dungy) will step out of the shadows with a big smile on his face and say “PSYCHE” the last 13 years were really a dream, it’s actually the year 2001 and I DIDN’T get fired for being too stubborn, boring, and insistent that my defense will win games regardless of whether it’s Josh McCown, Luke McCown, or Tent Dilfer….

…you didn’t ACTUALLY believe Jon Gruden came here and eclipsed my record, won a Super Bowl and went to the playoffs as many times as I did (all in less time than it took me) – did you?

…look, so long as the offense doesn’t hurt my defense by turning the ball over, or yielding bad field position – we can play keep away and win games 3, 6, or maybe even (gasp) 9 to 0!!!

Save your breath and calm your nerves Bucdom – the epiphany happened, the giant hand has written it on the wall – all things will be the “same as it ever was…” No Johnny Football (he’s too dangerous), no Taylor Lewan, or Zach Martin…just pure defense, all the time.

…and don’t even THINK about David Carr…who ever heard of drafting spending a second round pick on a scary rookie QB?

Too many bad things happen on offense. Best to get a carbon copy of our current starting WR – then have our 32 year old QB run around and check down to the ‘Twin Towers’ running come-back routes for field position – then we’ll send in the Keeker – FTW!

And don’t forget that other thing we can do with Ronde Barber….oops, I mean Alturan Verener – SCORING DEFENSE dood!

    We’re gonna DOMINATE!

  49. White Tiger Says:

Who knew Lovies favorite song (and unofficial theme for this season)…was…

    “We’re going to Party Like It’s 1999…”!
