Murphy Says He’d Beat Jeff Demps In Race

April 28th, 2014

The Big Apple was a bust for Louis Murphy in 2013

Many Bucs fans tremble with anxiety when they think of journeyman wide receiver Louis Murphy as the No. 2 man on the Bucs’ receivers depth chart. And that might be exactly where Murphy fits in right now.

Yes, Chris Owusu, who wears the dreaded No. 80, and Eric Page worked a lot with the first-teamers in practice last week, but that won’t soothe any nerves across Tampa Bay. However, what might calm fans a little, in addition to drafting a stud wide receiver next week, is Murphy’s claim of extraordinary speed.

Murphy was a track star at the University of Florida and said Friday he would expect to beat Olympic medalist and Bucs teammate Jeff Demps in a race. Demps and Murphy were teammates as Gators, in football and track.

Murphy made his bold claim on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 Friday. You can hear the full audio below.

Last year, Murphy was supposed to be a rip-the-cover-off-the-defense threat for the Giants, but that never materialized. He finished with six short receptions in 14 games played. Joe’s not sure what happened there, or why Carolina gave up on Murphy after gobbling him up in a 2012 trade with the Raiders.

The Bucs are hoping those teams just didn’t know how you use Murphy’s “speed in space.”

Murphy will have to back up his boasting where it matters most, on the field in games that count. His movement from team to team is a bit troubling, right now he gets the benefit of the doubt. I hope he succeeds.

  2. Lev Says:

He was the #3 behind cruz and nicks. That is why he probably does not have the resume we would like him to have. He has all the tools to be a lethal #2.

  3. Phillip Says:

He was more like the 4 or 5 WR… He was behind Randle(3rd) as well and when Cruz got hurt it was Jerrigan who stepped into the starting role… Who might I add did a really good job in a small sample size..

I’m a Gator fan(I bleed Maize and Blue though) and there is just something about Gator receivers that don’t tend to do well in the NFL.. I know Muschamp runs the Schiano offense(run run run/pass option) so they don’t get to develop as much as they should.. But even before that they weren’t any good… Right now the best one that recently came out was Racist Riley

I call BS. Demps is stupid fast

  5. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Demps would never be healthy long enough to race so the point is mute.

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Just another example of how Speed is not the most important trait in a WR. Catching ability is.

  7. Shawnbucfan Says:

    Wasn’t dexter Jackson fast also!?

  8. ToesOnTheLine Says:

Murphy won’t crack the top 3 WR’s on this team let alone a #2. Licht missed the mark with that signing.

  9. Couch Fan Says:

They both went to UF and they are now on the same team again. But they have never raced? Interesting that he would make the claim but yet they have spent so much time together and never actually seen whos fastest. Especially since they both ran track.

  10. covertwo22 Says:

They didn’t miss the mark on this signing. He’s a solid depth guy, #3 or #4. They’ll draft a #2, but the truth is, the WR corps will not be very good this year. I think they’ll run a lot of two TE sets.
I think Murphy and Demps will both have limited packages this year.

At least we arent Mike Williams 8 million for the next 4 years!!!!

    Thank god we traded him!!!

Now we can keep building this D!!

    WR is an overrated position.

What we need to worry about is our

I hope Murphy and Demps don’t race each other. They’ll be running to the max and will tear their groins. 😉
