Steve Smith And The Bucs

March 14th, 2014

Former Panthers WR Steve Smith reportedly has the Bucs on his wish list.

Bucs fans are clamoring for a wide receiver. Joe can’t tell you how many Twitter messages he has received the past day or two asking about Emmanuel Sanders.

(No, Sanders is not in Tampa Bay, yet. He left One Buc Palace without a contract. At the time of this typing, he has yet to sign with anyone.)

So this little nugget may get fans properly aroused for late Friday afternoon prowling for aggressive women. It appears former Panthers receiver Steve Smith lists the Bucs as one of three teams he wants to play for this fall.

Like other free agents, Smith is making the rounds to recruiting parties hosted by potential suitors, reports Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun.

Smith, 34, considers the Ravens one of his preferred destinations along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Diego Chargers, according to a source. The Ravens satisfy several of the elements that Smith is seeking, including a winning environment and proximity to his Charlotte home. Smith’s wife is expecting their fourth child.

Now the Bucs cannot (yet) offer a winning environment and Joe is not sure Tampa is close enough to Charlotte. Smith is from southern California, hence his preference to the Chargers.

But Smith does know Bucs starting quarterback Josh McCown from McCown’s days with the Panthers, so maybe there is a relationship there. Of course, the Bucs have Lovie, who every free agent the Bucs signed this week, per their discussions with Joe, cited as a significant reason why they are now Buccaneer Men.

Smith is meeting with the Ravens this morning.

I like the idea of adding Steve Smith… He could be our new Ike Hilliard. I also love his fire. A guy like Smith would help us buy time to groom a mid round draft pick, and ease the transition that’s bound to take place over the next couple years.

  2. Seth B Says:

    Nice… 1st Shout out! Lol… Go BUCS!

  3. OB Says:

Joe Tampa has non stop flights to CLT, so with the money he makes he could just about commute to work from there.

  4. MadMax Says:

I would F N LOVE this if we got him….especially hearing about the payback he wants to deliver to his former team….what better team than a divisional rival to do it twice a year lol.

  5. Couch Fan Says:

This guy has burned us so many times over the years, it would be awesome to see him do it for us. He can still play, doubt he’s going to ask for much and you know he’s gonna bust his ass to beat Carolina twice a year. Would love to pick him up.

  6. Scott Says:

Sign him up! He’d be great in the slot and what better way to stick it to Carolina by helping us beat them twice a year!

  7. Jordan Says:

Joe, I am seeing that the Bucs received a conditional 2014 pick from the Eagles for Benn last year. What happened to this pick?

  8. Barry Says:

True Smith walked into One Buc Place, saw McCown then turned around and left? That’s what I think I heard.

  9. zam Says:

He seems a better fit for the Ravens. If he comes here, I’m afraid I might meet him in town and get punched in the face.

  10. Bucsfanman Says:

Smith’s tweet was awesome! Watch out Carolina!
The dude is a flat out beast and has a big axe to grind with the Panthers. What better way to enact revenge than by playing for the Bucs!

  11. Vincente Says:

I’d like to know more about that pick Jordan is talking about as well. And about Steve smith, our offense be complete if he came to Tampa he’s a weapon that cannot be looked over and that would open up the field for vjax and our new tight end Myers.

  12. canadian bucsfan Says:

Imagine what he would have done if he saw Glennon then. He would have jumped out the window

I heard it was seeing the new jerseys

  14. kh Says:

Barry & Joe – I read an article (on PFT I believe) that said McCown and Steve Smith are close friends.

  15. dee Says:

    Ice up son

  16. Lynch Says:

I would love to see Smith here. I just hope Lovie can keep this dude in check.

  17. Biff Barker Says:

I hate this guy. But… he can still play. No matter, he’ll never leave Baltimore.

  18. bucsfan1979 Says:

i have been reading that the ravens play the panthers this year. i hope he comes here becuase we play then 2 times

  19. Eric Says:

Just whisper in his ear that we’re drafting Johnny Football.

    Done deal!

  20. bucsfan1979 Says:

Kh- you are right i also read that on PFT also

  21. Eric Says:

Now we’re talking, let’s patch this thing up Chuckie style and win the Division.

Glad to see everyone is on board now!

    Go Bucs!

  22. voice of reason Says:

@please, damn funny about the new jerseys. agreed. but they’re not as bad as the carolina jerseys, so maybe he is desensitized.

  23. SAMCRO Says:

Smith, I understand is a distraction in the locker room. I heard his personality is close to that of Meshawn Johnson. Personally, I hope we select Sammy Watkins with our first pick.

  24. Andrew 1 Says:

a big YES! to Steve Smith. Wouldn’t even mind if we had to pay a little more than the other teams.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We have no chance of getting Steve Smith here. His wife being pregnant seals his fate, unless the Ravens do something to really screw things up, he won’t leave there without a contract.

  26. Lynch Says:

We need to do something. I get the feeling that WR Mike Williams is skating on thin ice.

  27. Touchdown Gus Says:

    Oh God yes!

  28. Eric Says:

People are allowed to have babies in Tampa.

  29. Mike Says:

If you read what what Smith said about playing against the Kitties! You would think he wants to play here!

  30. Mike Says:

I really believe TB, or any NFC south team is his 1st choice

  31. bucrightoff Says:

We don’t need anyone is our locker room getting punched in the face. Plus he wants to win and play the Panthers. Ravens are way closer to the Super Bowl than the Bucs.

  32. Mike Says:

He gets to play them twice here

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Interesting: All of a sudden(Past 24hrs)-Good Prospects-Are leaving without contract-Guys that were scheduled for visits are now canceling

According to Overthecap.com (before we cut and additional players or extend GMC) We have around $15 mill in cap space

-Are agent starting to sour players on our low ball offers?

  34. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Before we cut (any) additional players or extend GMC- We have around $15 mill in cap space

  35. Josh P. Says:

@bucrightoff exactlly he wants to play the panthers, i’m pretty sure last i checked we play them twice.

  36. Buc Neckid Says:

I think that the Bucs are being honest with the FA’s coming in to visit.
The FA’s that have already been signed were signed to be “starters”,
Any FA coming in now will be given a chance to compete to start
    but no guarantees.
These FA’s have been starters up until now and are still trying to be on their new team.
When they meet with the Bucs and find out that they are not going to just be given the starting job,
they consider their options/leave to see what other teams say.

  37. Mike Says:

LUV… I’m thinking the same, but Lovie has me in doubt

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Two good Slot corners have turned us down in the past 24hrs

    Captain Munnerlyn ($15 Million)
    Walter Thurmond (???)

  39. feelthepewterpower Says:

Smith has broken a couple guys faces in the locker room. Hope he’s changed and can mold into a Lovie Smith type of guy. Purportedly he asked for a trade in week four, yet, is spewing hate on the panthers saying there will be blood and guys……hmm.

  40. Cmurda Says:

Luvmybucs, who has scheduled visits? and Where did you see that Captain sucko turned us down?

  41. Cmurda Says:

I mean to say who has canceled scheduled visits?

  42. UnderDog Lefty Says:

Year after year Smith was a thorn in the Bucs side. The guy is a gamer, I don’t care how old he is, if he’s still strapping it on and wants to play in Tampa then please Licht, GO GET HIM! McCown, Jackson & Williams will say thank you too.

  43. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Mike

    Are we waiting Julius Peppers?

  44. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Are we waiting for Julius Peppers?

  45. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Cmurda

    (Canceled Visits)
    Captain Munnerlyn
    Walter Thurmond

A few slot receivers have lift without contracts.

  46. Buc the Haters Says:

What ever happened to Tillman & Hester? just curious…. And Steve Smith is a fiery passionate guy on the field, but supposedly is the same in the locker room when he is frustrated with his role in the offense (which will prob be a secondary one). I say get a young guy in the 2nd or 3rd round of the draft to play slot. And grab Sammy Watkins if he’s available at #7 for our #2 WR… Or if he isn’t, grab a Qb in the 1st (BPA) or 2nd or 3rd (Carr or McCarron or Garrapolo), Odell Beckham in the 2nd, & the speedster from Wyoming in the 3rd. Depending on who we draft & when, mix in those picks accordingly.

  47. Bucs fan from VA Says:

Please NO and I repeat NO to drafting Johnny football. I agree with SAMCRO we should select Sammy Watkins.

  48. Joe Says:

What ever happened to Tillman & Hester?

    They are still out there.

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Last off season I begged for us to draft WR Kenny Still for the slot

Since August 2013-Draft WR Josh Huff !!!!!

    ———————————

Tillman is now unlikely to sign in Tampa

  51. MTM Says:

15 minutes with Lovie and the deal is done.

  52. RustyRhinos Says:

    @ LUVMYBUCS

    Huff sure can catch, Thanks

  53. Matt Says:

I would prefer sanders but i think we will have a better shot at smith. I dont think smith will require as much money and i think it would be appeasing to him to play the panthers twice a year. Smith could make one hell of a slot guy.

  54. MadMax Says:

He signed with the Ravens 🙁
