McCown Says He’s Ready For A QB At No. 7

March 14th, 2014

Joe can’t think of too many 2014 quarterbacks he’d rather have more than Josh McCown when it comes to a veteran in place that is both ready to start and ready to mentor.

McCown might be the perfect guy to help guide Johnny Football or Teddy Bridgewater, or any other quarterback the Bucs would be lucky to draft with the No. 7 overall pick.

And McCown says he’s ready for that gig. Mike Florio hit McCown this afternoon on Pro Football Talk Live, and McCown acknowledged that he could land alongside a heralded rookie and would be pleased to simultaneously assist him and battle him.

You can hear his full take in the video below. McCown also explains more on his chat with the Bucs’ “lead dog,” and it’s not Lovie Smith or Jason Licht.

give it up…its not going to happen. Watkins or Mack is gonna be the pick. Cant wait for when we pass up on johnny football. He is gonna suck in this league. Smaller, slower, less athletic RGIII. Get over yourself. None of these QBs are worth gonna be stars.

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This guy is a team player, that’s for sure. I have some doubts about his ability to be a full time starter, but I feel great about him being a helpful member of this team. Whether that means as a starter or as a mentor is yet to be determined, but you can be assured he won’t be a distraction. Doubt he will have any alarm clock issues.

  3. cap Says:

Unfortunately it won’t be a QB, but if we’re lucky Sammy Watkins or Khalil Mack….or an OT.

  4. NY Buc Says:

In fairness though what is McCown supposed to say about it…Hell no I don’t want them drafting a QB, I’m sick of being a career backup and not getting any younger….DAMN IT I WANT TO START…wahhhhh

No, the guy is saying the PC thing and trying to establish himself as a good team mate who puts the team first. Sounds great, but I’d guess human nature for Josh is getting Bridgewater, Manziel, Bortles voodoo dolls ready just in case the Bucs are getting QB twitchy with pick #7

  5. dizzle Says:

I believe the plan is a QB in round 3….Which is where anyone of these QBs should go.

  6. MadMax Says:

Sounds like a great guy, humble, with solid character. Im glad we signed him.

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I really don’t think Watkins is there at 7. I’d be absolutely shocked, especially the way he’s being hyped up lately. I think the Rams might just take him at 2. If we do want him, we would have to trade up, and I don’t think we have enough picks to want to do that. With the signing of Collins, I don’t think we go tackle either. If Manziel is there at 7 (looks to be an increasing possibility), I don’t think we pass him up at that pick. He could sit and learn for half a season or so, then be ready to go if McCown isn’t leading us to the promise land. However, I think it’s much more likely we trade down and get Carr. I just wish the draft would hurry up and get here already!!!

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @NY Buc,

Normally I would 100% agree with you. However, he was a complete team player in Chicago with Cutler. He stated that it was Cutler’s team whenever he got back, where he could have very easily said he wants to continue to (deservedly) start until his play warrants a change. I think this guy is genuine, and more importantly, realistic in his approach. I would be very surprised if he starts all 16 games, and that has nothing to do with injury or even necessarily poor play.

  9. RastaMon Says:

Can’t believe Joe…comes up with this has a good thing…McCown has not done sheet …other than cashing in checks for his WHOLE NFL career…..yeah..he is an OK “every team has/needs one ” QB “……I watched his press conference answer and question….he can’t even answer the questions without pondering stilted thought…..gag me….and I simply do not see a QB worth taking @ # 7…although many mocks have desparate losing teams taking them that early

  10. BucsQcCity Says:

No trade up. Still too many needs: wr, te, g, lb, qb

  11. Mark Says:

No I think he said IF IF IF IF they picked a QB he is not worried.
Reading a little into it Joe. Why not write Josh said,” they would pick Johnny at 7″, it’s almost the same.
Kinda bending the facts here joe.

No. You are 100 percent incorrect. You might want to re-listen. –Joe

This article says it all to me. Have to completely agree with the author:

  13. underdogs Says:

I live in Chicago. Josh McCown is a class act. I do not think he wii be as good for the Bucs as he was for the few games he played for the Bears last year. I sure hope so though. (Luke McCown seemed like a great kid too. Good family I guess…)

  14. lurker Says:

“However, I think it’s much more likely we trade down and get Carr. I just wish the draft would hurry up and get here already!!!”

was just gonna say this. if a big 3 qb is there we might trade down for carr, but ahead of Cleveland’s #26 pick. they have a qb in mind, just depends on the dominoes.

  15. Harry Says:

Steve Smith is now a Raven. We still need a slot receiver. Smith could have been nice, but I am still hoping for Emmanuel Sanders; I see he is visiting the 49ers tomorrow.

  16. finishers Says:

    watkins or Mack please

  17. Eric Says:

McCown is the perfect guy to mentor a young QB, and stick around a few years as a good backup.

The way Lovie is bringing in quality guys, with plenty of football ahead, very unlikely we have this shot again to get a franchise guy.

The others that can be had in rounds two or lower are not appealing to me. You can get those kind of players no matter what your draft position, every year. Like Glennon.

Take advantage of the 7th pick, if the guy you want is there. Set this team up for a long run when this thing comes together, which looks sooner rather than later the way Mr. Smith operates.

  18. Dick2111 Says:

Lovie’s obviously rebuilding the Bucs very rapidly to fit his system and goals. He’s surrounded himself with what looks to be a very competent, highly experienced staff. He’s already signed a bunch of great character, experienced players who each seem destined to make our 4-12 Bucs a much better team. Free agency’s not done yet, and we’re already in a much, much better position to capitalize on this year’s draft. We’ve now got an experienced quarterback (much in the mold of Brad Johnson I think) who Lovie and Jeff Tedford obviously have confidence in to be able to run their new offense. I for one am really excited about this coming season and wish that some ‘fans’ would just chill a little and enjoy the ride.

  19. Tampabaybucsfan Says:

    Sammy. @ 7

  20. WalkdaPlank Says:

Trade back for Mike Evans and an extra pick. Or take Sammy if he’s there. Bridgewater too, though that’s a pipe dream.

  21. Rrsrq Says:

    #draft

    #mockdraftcrazy

  22. RastaMon Says:

We ..Bucs do not have any control who might be available @ 7 ..but we have all options @ 7…and while all the rankings and our needs are pointing to a QB…sure shots are elsewhere…sure shot time unless we trade back…no QB interests me…hopefully a couple will have already be taken….and the feeding frenzy begins

  23. Kalind Says:

Guys, there is no way Watkins or Mack will be there when we pick. No way. Mack is likely to go first overall. And Watkins is probably the most “can’t miss” guy in the draft. There’s just no way. One of the QBs will be there. But my guess is they probably only like ONE of them. If that ONE isn’t there, they’ll pass and take best player avail. My hunch is they attempt to trade back get pick and draft Gilbert, Nix or Hageman.

  24. RastaMon Says:

Deep Draft..yeah…no QB ‘s @ 7…so many chances at reat player/need…buck up panic lap….THERE WILL HAE ONLY HAVE BEEN 6 F’n college players names called……I don’ care where the rankings have the Bucs choice ranked…if that player is the best fit….go for it…F’ conventional thinking……that is what has sucked us down into his pit of dispair

  25. Eric Says:

Carr is a good possibility. Tedford connection, everyone would get along, and he had a good combine.

The Beauty of the McCown signing is we don’t have to throw anyone into the fire too soon.

Perfect scenario, which is why Lovie is likely to take advantage of it and snag a QB.

Why have a QB guru and no talented QB of the future? (Glennon ain’t it).

Let Tedford have a man with skills to develop.

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t think Watkins will be great in the NFL. He didn’t look good at his pro day either. I like Mack and Barr. I truly hope they trade the pick and get something really good for it. I like Bridgewater and would be happy with him, but I’d rather get one of the other QBs in the 3rd round which is less risk. I like Manziel but he’s risky too. I don’t think any of these rookie QBs will be tops in the NFL. Wait for another draft when a Luck or Manning comes along and then sell the farm to get him.

  27. PRBucFan Says:

NY Buc, not it’s not a PR thing that is who Josh is.

Last year in Chicago even as he was lighting it up before Cutler was ready to come back he was saying that it was Cutlers job to come back to, that he was just there till he was ready to come back.

This guy is really humble and I think good things are coming his way this coming year.

  28. JonBuc Says:

While The Joe’s continue to cast the Johnny Football “bait” ( I’m all about Johnny Football being the pick ) haters continue to unwittingly drive site visits into 7 figures…it’s classic and fun to watch. “You go, Joes…you go!”

  29. Kevin Says:

The ONLY QB I would justify moving up to grab if needed would be Bridgewater. Regardless, I have learned to trust the new regime. I was pissed when they announced the release of revis. Then they signed Verner for a good deal. I’m going to sit back and trust that these men know what they’re doing. Can’t wait for some NEW bucs football!!!

  31. lifetime bucs fan Says:

Are we forgetting mettenberger is a value extremley late with a torn acl and now we can sit him for a full year before expecting him to start we arent gonna win a superbowl this year either and quarterbacks look a lot better in the draft next year

  32. RastaMon Says:

Hello…Kevin bandwagon fantasyfan…..move UP !…Move Up!…brief history lesson…both “history” and “lessons” are words paid forward many drafts in Buccaneer History…..Kevin !…this franchise has been buying on credit 4 years leading up to the “Ring”…Move Up ?????????

  33. WalkdaPlank Says:

Eventually this team is going to have to go with a younger QB. Whether itr right off the bat this year, sticking with McCown for 2 years and developing Glennon, sticking with McCown and drafting in 2 years, or sticking with Glennon provided he beats out the competition. If Carr makes it to round 2, take him or Garropollo. Or draft Murray in the 5th or 6th, that guy is largely underrated as long as his knee recovers. I’m just not convinced that we need to go QB at 7 when there are other huge needs across the board. And now we have McCown.

  34. Eric Says:

The vast majority of the mock drafts, for what it is worth, have one of the top 3 QB’s available to us at seven.

    Bortles Manziel or Bridgewater

Should be an interesting day indeed.

  35. Me First Says:

Josh will be our delhome 2003,hasselback2005, or shall I say dilfer2000..excuse the spelling ive hade afew#my expert opinion

  36. Burg Says:

Bortles > Johhny doucheball & The way too slow for a black guy Bridgewater

  37. Cmurda Says:

Titans splash move = Oher 4 years 20 Mill with 9.5 gtd. I know this is old news but it continues to give me pleasure to see other fan bases in much more miserable shape than us. Oakland Raiders free agency… Well, that’s been enjoyable as well.

  38. Daddy hulk Says:

I think we should trade back for another 2nd or 3rd round pick and take Mike Evans in the first. I think Mccown will do a good job for us.

  39. Arealbucsfan Says:

Id take either one. Let him sit and groom behind McCown for 2 years

  40. bigpoppabuc Says:

    Fo shizzle, dizzle.

  41. Jeagan1999 Says:

Bucs go WR, OLB or O-line in rounds 1 and 2…then get Aaron Murray or AJ McCarron in #3…count on it! All this Bridgewater Manziel talk is nonsense!

  42. Barry Says:

Bridgewater is nothing more then G.Smith or EJ Manual.

    Bortles is Matt Schaubish

If you gotta Gamble on a QB at 7 and if Johnny Manziel is there then that’s the guy you gamble on. He’s cocky, he’s arrogant, he’s confident. I’d be ok with it.

The one guy I like in round 2 or 3 would be Zach Mettenberger.

I’m pulling for Glennon, I think he can be a very good Pro.

  43. Cody Says:

If Cleveland and Jacksonville decide not to go QB then both Bridgewater and Manziel should be available at 7…

As someone stated earlier, Lovie and his staff may have 1 QB in particular that they would consider taking if he fell to the 7 spot…Personally I think that if Bridgewater fell to us at 7 we have to take him…With that said, I’m not 100% sure right now that Bridgewater is ready to be a week 1 starter…So having McCown on the roster really works in our favor if that scenario does play out…I must admit, It’d be nice to have McCown, Glennon, and Bridgewater in camp though that’s what you call competition at the QB position…

If that guy (QB) isn’t available and we pass on QB in the 1st rd altogether and all the top non QB’s are off the board… I wouldn’t mind (WR)Mike Evans or even (CB)Justin Gilbert at the 7 spot…Mike Evans is a Vincent Jackson clone and Gilbert would be a great addition to our secondary…

  44. Cody Says:

    2 Response to Barry…

    1. Imo Bridgewater is a much better prospect than both Manuel and Geno period…

    2. I like Manziel alot but I really worry about his durability on the next level; with his playing style he’s gonna take some hits…

Assuming we don’t trade up/down these are the players I like the most at the 7 spot that I feel could be available at 7…Sammy Watkins (very small possibility), Mike Evans, Teddy Bridewater, Justin Gilbert, and Johnny Manziel…

  45. Cannuckbuc Says:

    Hey guys
What if the Bucs take a QB in the 1st or 2nd round does Glennon get traded for a 3rd or 4th rounder?

  46. louden Says:

@jeagan1999: hope youre right.. if they stay put.. your scenario sounds good though, at least to me.
@all: I agree with the ones saying Bridgewater is (way) better prospect than Geno and EJ Manuels.
I think AJ could be a better Glennon (a QB you can win a champinoship with)
    Even more so about Murray.
    Most with Bridgewater.
na na, bortles na na, Maanziieeel goodbye.. the thing that makes AJ so interesting is he throws a fairly good Middle-deep-range sidline pass. exactly what you need in NFL to move the chains and damn it – he is just a winner^^ (although i hate analystics like that)
