Lovie’s Defense Needs Darrelle Revis

Lovie goes deeper into his cover philosophy

It is a bonfire lit by Jason La Canfora that won’t die and should burn for the better part of the next 10 days or so.

Those Darrelle Revis trade flames were fanned yesterday by the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio. His deep research (lawyers tend to do this) determined that two teams that desire Revis are the Broncos and the Patriots.

Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune has been adamant since the rumor was floated that, barring an earthquake of an offer, Bucs coach Lovie Smith will keep Revis. While meeting with Lovie at the combine two weeks ago, Lovie all but told Cummings he is building his secondary schemes around the talents of Revis.

“It’s funny to me about the Tampa 2,” Smith said. “I mean, somebody sometime needs to go and look and see how much we really play that. Now, we’re a cover 2 team because to me, cover 2 is a great coverage if you think they’re going to pass. But all it is is that.

“We’re primarily going to be a man team. Whether we win or lose is going to be based on how we play man coverage, so that’s kind of where we’re at. Now, there are disguises that you do, too. For instance, you may start from a pre-snap cover 2 shell, but then you move and do different things.

“You have to have a starting point, and (cover 2) will be our signature coverage and once we get that (defensive) front going, it will be the best coverage to be in because, what are we about? We’re about taking the ball away. And you get more interceptions being in zone (coverage) than when you have everybody looking at a man, so we’re going to want seven sets of eyes watching the quarterback, and that’s done with zone coverage, so we want to get into a situation where we can do that.”

Joe doesn’t see a trade happening. The Bucs have enough holes as it is. You don’t blow up your secondary in an effort to try to fill the potholes on the rest of the roster. That’s like saying the Bucs should trade Gerald McCoy because of the draft picks he would command. Joe is confident that outside of the handful of psychotic, myopic, knuckle-dragging GMC haters, no Bucs fan has suggested trading GMC, except those working a bottle of Stoli all afternoon.

Joe just has a hunch Lovie and Revis together will make beautiful football music together this fall.

Lovie and Licht are playing this right, Lovie saying how he hits and how valuable Revis is. Meanwhile Licht is in the background wheeling and dealing. Revis roster bonus comes up soon so we will know very soon. But I love the smokescreen. And I will love having ammo for the draft and getting some Free-agents that will fit the new systems.

  2. Drew Says:

Revis not going to be traded.

    Great article joe.

Joe did you attend MIT Sloan in Boston? If you did, did you attempt the zebra (1st hint) jump?

  5. Buc1987 Says:

    Just trade him.

  6. Anthony Says:

@Bucs1987, Lovie Smith said he is going to use Darrelle Revis in his defensive schemes. Revis is here to stay!

  7. RastaMon Says:

Yeah….any teams defense is better when they can calculate an area that will be ….only probed

  8. Red86 Says:

I agree Joe. Getting rid of Revis is like the Bulls trading away Michael Jordan after winning two championship. You just don’t get rid of once in a life time talent, while the are still productive.

Sure Revis may not have gotten 16 picks, but he didn’t play like Sabby or Myron. Revis is great.

  9. Mark Says:

I’ll bet Belichick saying,”To bad Greg not the coach now, I could have got Revis for a 4th round pick from my buddy Greg.
Who knows what will happen, but I hope Revis stays.

    March will be interesting….

  10. SAMCRO Says:

hiccup …how’d ja know I like Stoli’s? ..hiccup

I can’t say I’m as confident about Revis as Joe is.. I’m still jonesing to see what a super cornerback (NFL Demigod) looks like. I wasn’t to impressed last year. I want to be dazzled with all his talent. I want to be able to lift my styrofoam buccaneer sword into the air and shout “Hail Revis!” whilst a tear falls from the corner of my eye like the Native Indian man on those save my planet commercials. I want to be impressed.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

    Anthony…that’s horrible news.

  13. PRBucFan Says:

    Revis is staying

    Deal with it.

  14. Thomas Says:

i’d rather they keep him, but if they DO trade him and can get about 4 picks for him this year, including 1st and 2nd and 3rd rd picks, then go for it.

  15. Anthony Says:

    @Bucs1987, yours is no better

    @PRBucFan, you’re 100% right!

Darrelle Revis is here to stay!

  16. rayjay1122 Says:

I just hope that everyone who are hating on Revis continue to hate him when he has a great season for the Bucs this year. I can live with the haters but I respect them more when they stay consistent.

On this list of the Top 5 defenses over the past 3yrs. Can you guess the one thing they all have in common? They’ve allocated 80% of their cap space, on the defense side of the ball, to the (Front 7) not (The Back Half).

What a novel Idea, give valuable cap space on defense. To guys closet to the line of scrimmage. I wonder why? Of course this can’t be right. Is possible defenses lead from the front not the back?

No Buc Realist it is not a smoke screen saying a secondary guru is going to base his scheme around his best player. Ya ur right man every new coach that come into a team with a solid corps is gnna trade their 1st or second best player to take a chance on a rookie. So what does lovie have to do before you idiots stop saying smoke screen. They’re gnna restructure his contract the moment they need to resign McCoy and his cap hit will go from 16 million to like 5. They have enough cap space to awk the moves they want period. He’s not going anywhere and when the Bucs are in the playoffs in January ill come back and say told ya

Our EX GM tried to Sell us a bunch of BS

He Believed that you can’t get premium talent on the offensive line through the draft. That last years crop of cornerbacks wasn’t worth spending, our precious cap space on.

Dom tried to sell everyone on the fact that, he didn’t see the need for the organization to pay “so called” average talent big money this last off season. Instead he traded a 1st & 3 or 4th this year + gave a guy coming off of major knee surgery the largest contract EVER for a player at his position.

When that simply wasn’t the case. Most of the guys on this had productive years.

Sure the New Orleans, had a better overall defense then we did, in 2013. But if we can finally improve our front 7(rotation). Sign & Draft some quality corners-Our defensive unit as a whole will thrive. We could sign 2 or 3 guys for the price we pay Revis.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    closest

  24. Chris Says:

Take a look at Smith and tony Dungy’s history. They never picked a cb in round 1. They invested highly in the front 4 bc that’s where it starts. You need good CBS. But Revis is expendable. You can get a Verner for 6-7mm, banks , and maybe Zachary bowman or Tillman on the cheap.

I said it last year. We were the only idiots to make this deal. Coulda had more players, Sheldon Richardson next to McCoy wow. Phew. That woulda been a start and keeping Bennett. While signing grimes, drafting banks and signing another cb on the cheap. I even stated Goldson was a terrible signing.

Thank you glazers for getting rid of the rock star.

  25. Mike10 Says:

Possibly Lovie loves him, possibly smoke n mirrors Joe. Isn’t saying that going to maximize any return you could get?
And you can’t compare that to GMC.. you don’t build a defense around a secondary. You do it with a D line. Trading an all-pro 26 y.o. DT carries no justification.
Now I’m not all in on the Revis trade, but I look at where we are now as a team, and I think a move like that could transform your franchise; esp w a draft like this upon us. We gotta get a game changer on the edge and/or a confident QB option moving forward. Having the extra picks from a Revis trade might get us the ammo to do that.
But at this point, I just do not see us winning big within the next 2 years. So having expensive guys like Revis and Goldston are great for any roster (sure!), but they’re not going to get us over the cusp… they’re just the wrong position to have A+ players at, at least at this point when we’ve got C- guys at much more important positions across the field.

This article did a good job explaining some of the reasons:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1974401-5-reasons-why-the-bucs-should-consider-trading-darrelle-revis

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Revis may not be worth 16 million….but LVD is worth about 10…so things average out….I like having both of them….Revis isn’t going anywhere.

  27. RastaMon Says:

Anybody tha says Revis in not worth $16,000,000.00 a year to suit up and pay football…simply does not know what $16,000,000.00 iz

  28. biff barker Says:

    Playoffs? Playoffs?
That’s a bit optimistic given all the new coaching and schemes. Factor in the roster changes too.
Bottom line is this, Revis will remain a Buc unless trading him provides us with a massive upgrade. It’s not likely we find a trade partner and it’s less likely he restructures his deal.

  29. Red86 Says:

The old saying goes. “Don’t fix what isn’t broken.”

Revis is the least of the problem on defense. Goldston is more expendable if he can’t stay on the field due to hits in the secondary.

It’s true that the front four are what drives the whole defense. I said this last year before we got Revis. Mark Dominic screwed this team up temporarily. If he gotten Grimes or other CBs earlier, then the price for Revis would have been much cheaper. Also, the possibility of having Sheldon Richardson or Star next to McCoy. It’s not Revis fault that they signed him for that much and gave up top picks for him. (The picks are my main issue about this trade. Not the player and the contract.)

We don’t hear Broncos, New England, and Packers wanting to get rid of their QBs despite the fact that Defense is the main thing that win championship.

Getting rid of Revis is a bad idea no matter what. It’s no guarantee that the guys we bring in to replace him is going to pan out much less be in the league in 5 years. Revis can be counted on to play hard and play smart.

  30. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This is a rewritten version of an article from last week, with little difference.

  31. BucFan20 Says:

I hate to read Cummings stories. Joe has already written the same thing a week before.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Maybe its just me, but the Revis trade rumors are tiring. Its not going to happen without an offer of two first round picks and no one will offer that. Florio is full of crap. The teams he meentioned will not make any offers that aree acceptable.

It would have to be someone with the cap space OR the ability to make more space, and it would have to be somone with an abundancee of picks near the top. The Browns could do it if they make cap room.

  33. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @BuccaneerBonzai

What if Revis no longer wants to be here? The rumors started from somewhere. If so that would lower ” the kings ransom” that the bucs would ask for picks. Would anyone be surprised if Revis asked for a trade?

  34. mike n Says:

not trading revis this year. The good news is though, with the way his contract is you could trade him next year or the next ect bc he on a series of 1 yr deals and the cap goes up big this year and next and probably the next so more teams may have interest. You can’t trade him this year unless the deal blows you away.

  35. chris43 Says:

Trade Revis. Pick up an extra second. Trade with the Rams, move up and get Clowney. You’ve got your Sapp (GMC), you’ve got your Rice ( Clowney). Did we have the best cover corners with the Tampa 2? No. Sign Sam Shields.

  40. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @PRBucFan

If I was Licht I would listen to trade offers for VJ, or Martin. Not saying trade anyone. But will gladly trade some of the lower value positions to quickly rebuild this team that has not been competitive in the NFC South the last 5 years

  41. PRBucFan Says:

Let’s trade em all, than trade whatever players we bring in after that that show talent.

    Franchise RB? Who needs that!

Hell McCoy and Lavonte will be vets on the decline by the time y’alls proposed rebuilds finish.

Might as well ship em outta here, pronto!

  42. Snook Says:

  43. rayjay1122 Says:

@PRbucFan….I feel your pain and frustration. A few people seem to want us to dump talent to save money. I just guess I am too much of an idiot to understand these truly genius fans.

  44. Destinjohnny Says:

So the offense talent is close to the worst in the nfl that is the problem

  45. You go Joe Says:

    @realist

Please elaborate the long term effects of trading Vjacks and Martin… Also revis .you say lower valued positions yet we do not have a player who can replace vjacks , Martin, or revis. And if you say draft them then that’s a bigger gamble than what we have. There is no benefit other than taking two steps back for trading the mentioned players.

Haven’t you given it more than a 1 minute thought ??? Lovie came for this talent on the team and all of sudden we should get rid of the talent?? Your idea just moves us back two seasons at most. And no other rb can be a Martin there is no other main rb, we’ll just have supporting RB waiting for that good RB

  46. Kevin Says:

@ JR….I was thinking the same thing myself, Byrd would be much better than Gholdston.

  47. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Revis is one of the truly elite players in the NFL and he plays for us….how many times have we been able to say that lately?

    I say….”Lets keep him”!!!

  48. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @you go Joe
VJ will be 32 at the end of the season. How much longer can he play at a high level. What if VJ stays and retries in 2-3 years. What are the Bucs suppose to do then. Running backs have short careers in the NFL. Build the O-line and plug them in. I am not saying trade all the players. But Light would not be doing is job if he did not listen to offers for older players that might not be here in a couple years. You cannot draft scared just because the draft is a gamble. And remember that some are better gamblers than others. The pop-star is gone, we shall not fear the draft anymore.

  49. Posey99 Says:

This is a quarter back drivin passing league now. We have the #1 guy to stop passes in revis. Defense will get us to the playoffs and there’s no doubt we can’t afford to give away the best defense corner in the game (in his prime) and try to beat drew brees, cam newton and Matt Ryan 6 times every year. I wouldn’t take 3 first rounders for revis. There’s a reason why belicheck and john elway want him…

  50. what? Says:

realist the only smoke is from what ever you are smoking… Lovie knows better than to trade away the great talent that Revis is… only way he gets traded is if a team out there wants to give us their entire 2014 draft picks!

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  53. You go Joe Says:

    @realist
If vjacks has 2 or 3 years left I say we get that out of him. I do realize he will probably have a 70 yard catch and no more 80 yard TD. But he boosts our WR to a solid point. If he’s gone(assuming) then we will have a bigger whole to fill than what we already have with there WR.

I do want to find his replacement and mike Williams is not that guy nor any other WR that we have. So let’s draft a potential replacement, but not this year 5 picks and a weak LB depth, DE, TE, QB, OG, And CB need more fixing than the WR. Now I do agree that we need a vjacks replacement, but now is not the time.

I also agree with listening to offers, but licht also has to look as to how it will impact us with the gain/loss of a player. And losing Vjacks with at most a 3rd round pick would be a huge negative impact. ( I don’t see vjacks as a 2nd, and your argument of 32 by the end of the season helps prove it).

As for running backs Martin has a high potential that can just benefit our team more than any current RB. Lacy, Lynch, Gore, AP and Martin have huge amount of talent that is in one package instead of having multiple RBs. As joe wrote a few articles ago the 49ers have a solid system with a talented RB and a solid supporting cast. Seattle and for sure the packers. We can be in that team by keeping Martin and the rest of the RBs that will establish our run offense for sure if used properly. And schiano did it poorly, Martin as a deep WR?!?

If we are going to gamble with either RB or WR by potentially trading Martin or vjacks then it’ll be two huge steps backs for each and a huge risk for licht to make it worth it. If not we’ll be crying and screaming just as a few did for talib

  58. owlykat Says:

You want a player like Revis not only for his production but for his experience and example for all the other DBs who learn from him. Just look at the influence that Hardy had on all the rest of our LBs when he played for the Bucs. He made a big difference and Revis will too, and Lovie knows it and will not let him go for anything short of the picks given up for RG3. Keep Revis a Buc. Also Revis would like to win a Super Bowl, and he knows Lovie knows how to get there, so I don’t see him asking for a trade now. It would have been different if he had to face years ahead playing for Dumbo Shiano and his sidekick fool, Sheidan. He knew they would never get him a ring.

Bucs need to keep Revis’ star power

    http://espn.go.com/blog/tampa-bay-buccaneers/post/_/id/3517/bucs-need-to-keep-revis-star-power

Another thought just came to me as I continue to ponder the speculation that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will trade cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Any final decision on such a move would have to be approved by ownership. The Glazer brothers (Joel, Bryan and Ed) aren’t like Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder, but they’re more involved than many people realize. That’s why it’s important to think about how the Glazers would feel about trading Revis.

That’s where my thought plays in. In the most simple terms, the Glazers like star power. They previously have gone out and brought in Jon Gruden and Keyshawn Johnson. They also bought the Manchester United soccer team — one of the most popular sports franchises in the world.

The Glazers leave football decisions up to football people and coach Lovie Smith and general manager Jason Licht will have a lot to say about what — if anything — the Bucs do with Revis. But the Glazers also have some say, and I have a hard time picturing them wanting to trade Revis.

As far as star power goes with the Buccaneers, it pretty much starts (and stops) with Revis. With apologies to rising stars Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David, Revis is the only household name on the Buccaneers.

This is a franchise that needs household names because it has struggled to fill Raymond James Stadium in recent years. The Glazers have dispelled the myth that they don’t spend enough money on players in the last couple of years and Revis, who is scheduled to make $16 million this year, is a big part of that.

If the Bucs trade Revis, the old complaints about the Glazers being cheap would resurface and the team would lose its most recognizable face.

The Glazers can’t afford to let either of those things happen.

  60. Andrew 1 Says:

love how everybody gets all up in arms about how we let Michael Bennett go, yet the same thing would happen if we got rid of Revis. lol. He would go to some other team and play at a pro bowl level, and people here would be crying about how our CBs cant cover WRs if they were standing still. learn people.

  61. Andrew 1 Says:

If you got a good thing, keep it going.

  62. Andrew 1 Says:

And there is no need to worry about the cap space at this time. We have enough cap space (one that will even increase after we solve our problems with our expensive o line), what we dont have is enough talented players. Lets not compound the problem by trading one of our best ones.

For the love of Pete- shut up! Pretty sure the Multi billionaire Glazers can manage Money better than anyone posting here . Many of whom I suspect are minimum wage earners!!

What should we pay for Aaron Rodgers? Oh, he’s a QB
Then what about Calvin Johnson? Adrian Peterson? Luke Kenchly?

What do you think Seatle will pay Richard Sherman, the 2nd best Cb in the game? Bet it’s right around Revis money.

What do you think we are gonna pay McCoy? Bet it’s around 18

If you don’t think he’s the best, then complain
If you think the team could improve by trading, then feel free
    You’d be wrong(IMO), but ok

But please, stop talking about money. You are in waaaay over your head

I’m not worried about money, just his knee and his age.

All the posts supporting keeping Revis assume he is going to fully recover and have a long career. I think either is unlikely and say get what we can while there is a market for him.

And, use what we get to get a good QB out of the draft which in today’s league is far more critical than cb.

  66. The_Buc_Realist Says:

The Money arguement is only about how it is allocated under the cap. Anyone that runs a business or household budget knows this. To some this is just as much about football as the Fantasy football. Would I care if the secondary made 1 billion in endorsments. NO. But do i care that the secondary is taking up 35 million of the 133 million cap. Yes.
