Lovie: Offensive Mystery Will Continue

March 26th, 2014

Well, Joe tried. But Lovie Smith wouldn’t go there.

No, Lovie has no plans to talk before opening day about what will make Jeff Tedford’s new offense tick. Lovie explained and gave his reasoning today at the NFL Owners meetings in Orlando.

Joe asked Lovie to expand on the quote of new Bucs center Evan Dietrich Smith, who told SiriusXM NFL Radio that the Bucs offense would be “up tempo.”

Lovie said he will be keeping Tedford’s offense quiet because he believes the unknown surrounding it is a distinct competitive advantage. The head coach wasn’t blowing smoke. He clearly is pumped up at the chance to get defenses off balance.

The only insight he offered today were only were a few general statements: “We’re are a running attack that can pass the football when we want to,” said Lovie, who added that fullback won’t be a key position in his offense and Mike James is not a fullback candidate.

Lovie was clear that preseason games won’t reveal much.

Now Joe’s all for seizing the edge this secrecy and unknown provides. However, a new offensive line and a new quarterback in a brand new system, with a first-time NFL offensive coordinator, also need plenty of work to gel.

Hearing this reinforced to Joe that Josh McCown is a lock to start the regular season ahead of Mike Glennon or a rookie quarterback. The coaching staff is going to want an experienced had running the offensive show out of the gate.

    M. Santo form ESPN gave the Bucs the only A grade in FA. His one question mark is with QB. Believing that Lovie only wants a seasoned veteran @ QB who will make few mistakes and not hurt anyone. Assume that means the rest of our teams chances to win. Does any of that sound like Johhny Football ?

We’ll be implementing a new offense so a veteran makes sense. In the short term. Brad Johnson and Rich Gannon come to mind. Make good decisions with the football.

I think McCown will start the year, and Glennon will push him to the bench by mid season. With a strong defense, a pounding running game and an efficient passing attack, the Bucs will once again be a contender!

I’m okay with keeping it a secret from the media and the public right now, but the idea of not testing it out in preseason is concerning.

Keeping it a secret will give you an advantage for exactly one half of one game. Doesn’t seem a worthy benefit for not practicing it against real teams in preseason.

  6. Brandon Says:

McCown will start the year and the Bucs will likely use a 3rd round pick on a guy with clear potential to someday be able to groom into an effective starter. Guys like Brett Smith, Logan Thomas, Aaron Murray, Garrapolo (not a fan of him or Murray), Conner Shaw, and a few others are all interesting QBs with mobility that can make plays with their arm and all should be available round 3 or later.

They sure are now building a running attack offensive line. I think that statement might have been made to mislead some teams.

At least he answered whether James will be move to FB.

If the oline plays anything like last year, it shouldn’t be long.
