Leadership Evidence Was Lacking For Joseph

Forgetting the fact Davin Joseph accomplished nothing on the field during the Greg Schiano era, his impact in other areas and at other times was subpar as well.
Joe hates to be harsh on good-guy Joseph, but the numbers didn’t look good at all. Consider the following:
Joseph was a Bucs captain for years.
When the Bucs offense was humming and rolling in the second half of 2010, Joseph was hurt and undrafted rookie Derek Hardman was cruising in Joeph’s place.
In 2011, Joseph was a “leader” when the team quit on Raheem Morris and Joseph did not have a good season, despite young, healthy legs.
In 2012, Joseph was lost with a brutal knee injury and again he was effectively replaced by a journeyman while the offense and running game exploded.
Last season, well, Joseph was captain again when the team thoroughly imploded to an 0-8 start.
Yes, the Bucs could have given Joseph one more shot, but the guy was coming off three lost seasons, and his leadership ability was sketchy at best.
Joseph was a quality man in the community, one of the more active Bucs on the charity front, and Joe’s not diminishing his effort or his fantastic personality, especially his cooperation with media types like Joe. However, Joe understands why the Bucs weren’t willing to move on with their former leader.
Sadly, Joe has an uneasy feeling that Joseph will soon be a member of the Atlanta Falcons, a team yearning for a right guard, and a team that knows Joseph’s potential — keyword, potential.

Davin is a classy guy. Joe, would you say the might cut Penn, save that 7 mill, then either sign Monroe for 8-9mill? Or do they upgrade the pass rush and get one of those premium OT’s at #7
Joe is not in favor of cutting Penn. He’s not overpaid for his position. He’s durable. And that’s a tough position to gamble on finding a replacement. Joe would give Penn another year. –Joe

You always want to pull for a class act like Joseph. They don’t come much better than him. But fact is Joe hit the nail on the head. Best wishes to Joseph and I know his next employer will be very happy. This will be a wake up call to many I hope.

i agree with joe they shouldnt cut penn, i believe the guy just had a bad season last year, however i also believe he could bounce back next year. go bucs

Wish him well but unless he was willing to take a significant pay cut this needed to be done. Never saw the “Pro Bowl” quality play other did.

As far as Penn, I would try to restructure him and move him to RT, then sign or draft an upgrade. That way Dotson is what he should be…a swing tackle backup. #depthupgrade

A good man. I’m glad he got his release early and not toward summer. He’ll have a good chance to catch on elsewhere. Good luck Davin.

if he goes to falcons will it matter, we couldnt take advantage of the last guy we sent there because we dont have a pass rush and until we do davin joseph will be an upgrade and is going to be highly motivated to dominate atleast twice a year we he plays us. he’s an upgrade for atlanta or any team that plays the bucs until the pass rush magically appears. depending on rookies just isnt wise just in case anyone has forgotten the impact gerald mccoy has his rookie season

Raheem Morris era all over again. Don’t like this move. He had a bad season last year coming off that injury… 18 mil under the cap and we need to free up more $ so that the only guard we have left may never play football again. Would love to know what the game plan is here.

Well I guess I was dead wrong. I had high hopes for Joseph. But I do believe he was a leader in the locker room if not at least amongst the linemen. When he went down a few players spoke of how valuable his leadership was. But he’s gone now, time to find a guard.

yeah boo-hoo and all, but if he told us he’d be willing to play for league minimum, he’d still be a Buc. So it’s hard to feel too too sorry for him.

He’s been more part of the problem than part of the solution. Cutting him clears the way for candidates to replace him. Get used to it. He’s just one of many who will be shown the door. He IS replaceable.

The big guy would never hesitate, when it came to speaking a few good words to U-Wasn’t fake-Extremely humble-Wouldn’t Hesitate Sign a Jersey or-Say a few positive words to your kids-Respectfully!!
Even though I understand, It had to be done-Davin’s a Warrior. The Heart is welling-But the body is not able to hold up. I will never question his leadership. Because he displayed that no doubt. I’m not going to disrespect one of favorite BUCS of ALL-TIME/Just to Justify a Business decision.

not impossible that they still sign him. perhaps he was unwilling to consent to a paycut and both agreed that the market could decide what he’s worth and whether the bucs are willing to pay that much

I liked him, but I suppose you are right.
Releasing him means we’ll be going after a OG in free agency or the forth (or later) round of the draft.

Lovie and Licht have it all planned out in advance. This is just the first salvo of many cuts to come. They both know NFL football very well and what it takes to bring back championship football to the Bucs. It is nothing like dumbo Schiano who foolishly gave away good players and thought Glennon was the Face of the Franchise. LOL!

@gt40bear Are you a idiot calling Dotson a backup?? This dude was our best lineman last year, and Movie wants to try him at left tackle in preseason. Bench Dotson?? I’M SORRY BUT YOU ARE A DUMB YOU KNOW WHAT. Its simple Dotson to left tackle, move Penn back to his natural position, right tackle. Utah needs to go to guard, Nicks will be back, and we need a veteran center to help whatever young qb calls our plays.
