Four Teams Chasing Josh McCown

March 10th, 2014

Who knew Josh McCown was so popular?

The hot quarterback in free agency (down year, huh?) is touring various ESPN TV and radio shows this morning.

An excellent article out of the Chicago Tribune chronicled McCown’s close ties with Jay Cutler and the Bears but also dove into McCown’s chat about moving on during an appearance on the Mike & Mike show.

“To leave Chicago, it’ll be a situation where I’m looking to compete to start or to start,” McCown said. “And to be able to kind of grow more as a player. And the only way you can do that as a player is on the field. So, that’ll definitely be something that we’re looking at. We’ll see. We’ll see what opportunities come and where we’re at tomorrow.”

Well, if McCown truly wants to start or get a fair shot at starting, then Tampa Bay has to be the best choice he can find. Few, if any NFL front offices have less invested — emotionally, financially and draft picks — than the Bucs’ hierarchy.

McCown told ESPN four teams have started discussions with him in advance of the free agency bell ringing tomorrow at 4 p.m. Joe’s already written that the Bucs were expected to pounce.

It’ll be interesting what other comments/hints McCown might drop as he tries to jack up his market value the day goes on.

Bring in all the competition you can Lovie & Licht. Men sharpen Men-Like Steel, Sharpens Steel

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. StAugBuc Says:

I’m all for competition, but dear God, look at his career stats. Why are we even talking about this guy?

  3. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Remember it not how you start, its how you finish. He had a few 300 yard passing games last year. So I could see him pushing Glennon-Which will only help improve the play of our wideouts-defensive backs, etc etc. Should make for an overall- very competitive roster.

  4. StAugBuc Says:

How you finish? 8 games last year in a 12 year career? Didn’t play in 2012 or 2010. I’m not sold on him for anything.

  5. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Why would McCown want to play for Tampa, If Penn is a Tackle here. That is a sure way to get hurt. How can the Bucs win with any QB with the 4th best Left Tackle in NFC south. Penn gave up the second highest sac total last year by All tackles. The “Donald Penn Mob” need to realize that this issue must be address as any Free-agent QB comes to Tampa.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

StAugBuc- It’s the curse of being a Bucs fan! Any QB is better than the one starting for us. That’s the way it has always been. McCown is nothing spectacular but is definitely an improvement over our previous back-ups. If he ends up starting, I’d say it’s more of a testament to our lack of talent than his ability overall.

  7. bucfanjeff Says:

I don’t like McCown but if we do sign him, expect him to start.
McCown is to Lovie as Glennon was to Schiano.

I’d rather draft a QB and let him learn behind Glennon until his time comes.

  8. Bucks_Sam Says:

If wee look the Chad henne tea leaves, we can assume Josh is minumum 4 – 5 million a year.

I suspect with 4 teams looking, and easily a better QB then Chad…. 6 – 8 million for a free agent starting QB is probably more likely.

6 – 8 million can probably get you 2 excellent Free Agent WR’s.

Imagine adding Ben tate and Nicks instead of McCown.

I don’t see why we would buy 1 meh QB when we already have a meh QB, and the money could be spent getting him so real weapons.

  9. Mark Says:

Building a team is done by coaches. Fans don’t vote on issues, it’s not a majority situation, and what percent of fans ever coach above high school level or at all.
Give the man a break. Let’s see what happened first, before we complain. Is there anyone out there that thinks Schiano’s system was better?
As a fan I would like improvement, however it is not in my hands.
Trade, acquire players, or cut them as you see fit. Just improve.
Fans can be like the old couple down the street, no matter what happens they complain and tell stories about the past being better. ( PS I’m old ) But believe change is a good thing. Wish you the best Lovie. Hope thing work out.

Rookie of year MG8 or bust. Really? Hitch your wagon to McCown? Laughable.

“four teams have started discussions with him in advance of the free agency bell ringing tomorrow at 4 p.m. ”

Is this against the FA contact rules?

“How can the Bucs win with any QB with the 4th best Left Tackle in NFC south.”
Thanks for putting a smile on my face. To sad to be funny But it is what it is.

  13. MR.T Says:

Didn’t know that many teams were desperate for an old QB.

  14. Broy3434 Says:

Just stop with these short term qbs and grab Bridgewater. So simple. Sign monroe Albert or hell even a guard and lets win 10 games next year

  15. bwf921 Says:

If he is coming here that’s cool. I still think we need to draft a QB. He would be a 2-3 year QB and then what. Glennon will NOT turn into the franchise. Draft Garrapolo 2nd round and let him sit for a while and learn. If we suck let him start mid season.

  16. SAMCRO Says:

    Joe says,

“Well, if McCown truly wants to start or get a fair shot at starting, then Tampa Bay has to be the best choice he can find.”

I completely agree with you on that statement. Are you confident Joe, he could win the starting job in a fair competition?

  17. Left_Coast_Bucs_Fan Says:

McC’s best year was last year and Lovie wasn’t even his HC then, so why all this speculation about the Bucs being “so hot” to get him? Besides, I am placing all my trust in the fact that during his time off Lovie has grown to realize he needed someone else to choose the right offensive players, especially at QB. And it would seem that the odds are rediculously low that Tedford just happens to think the QB of the future is also a former QB of Lovie’s.

  18. BoJim Says:

I’m cool with McCown if we can get him for a good price. Pick up a QB in the later rounds and let them all compete. McCown is a good backup but could also win us a few games. I think Glennon or whoever QB we pick later might be a franchise player in a couple years..

  19. zam Says:

I’d put the Jets higher in need… Geno Smith did worse than Glennon last year, and the Jets don’t have a #7 draft pick to grab a QB.

  20. rdbucfan Says:

    Realist

I don’t know if Donald Penn Mob fits. Since Joe is the one so confident Penn is an above average LT. I think it should be the Donald Penn and Mic Club.
