Bucs Eyeing Eric Ebron?

March 28th, 2014

Recent NFL history has taught us that possessing a freakish, athletic, pass-catching tight end creates nightmares for defenses. And a former scout and Lovie Smith colleague believes the Bucs might have their sights on this year’s edition in the NFL Draft, Eric Ebron out of North Carolina.

NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock bowed to Ebron’s ability recently, saying he would be a top-10 talent in any draft. “He’s athletic, he catches the ball easily, he’s a natural hands catcher,” Mayock told NFL.com. “Everything I’ve seen about Ebron screams top-10 talent.”

Ebron had had drops issues, including at his Pro Day this week, but longtime Bears scout and Lovie friend Greg Gabriel, now writing for NationalFootballPost.com told WDAE-AM 620 yesterday he believes Ebron could be in play for Lovie and the Bucs. (You can hear the full audio below.)

Given offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford’s interest in using multiple tight ends, a fascination that grew for him after spending time with Bill Belicheat and Josh McDaniels, Joe could see the Bucs going in that direction, though it surely wouldn’t be Joe’s first choice.

YES PLEASE. If they trade down I hope this kid is one of their targets.

  2. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

I would not be disappointed with a trade down (15 to 20 area?) and this guy.

  3. bucs fan in NC Says:

No hands! To be a threat as a pass catching TE you have to be able to catch the ball consistently. Pass on this kid, especially at #7

  4. unbelievable Says:

Only if they traded down to the mid-teens, or further.

Don’t think this kid is top 10 talent yet, sorry.

  5. Architek Says:

Trade down and we can deal

  6. Macabee Says:

It would be fine with me if they picked up Donald, Evans, Ebron, or several other players slated for the 1st round. At #7, some of the first 4 QB-needy teams may want to get back into the 1st round. The ideal situation would be to trade down one place with the Vikings to ensure they got their QB and we pick up a 4th. Get our man in the 1st, then trade down a few spots in the 2nd and pick up a 6th to round out the draft.

  7. LUVMYBUCS Says:

As an out wide/move tight end sure. Outside of that, this kid has absolutely no physicality to his game what so ever. Besides we already have (2) of those type of prospects already in-

    • Timothy Wright
    • Brandon Myers

Sure In time Ebron MIGHT develop into an overall good prospect. But if your gonna draft a guy like Ebron, why not convert one of these Tall wideouts to a tight end.

    • Brandon Coleman
    • Cody Hoffman
    • L’Damian Washington

IMO-We need someone to change out blocking/Receiving TE’s

    • Tom Crabtree
    • Steve Maneri

There some quality guys in later rounds

    • C.J. Fiedorowicz
    • Crockett Gillmore

  8. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*IMO-We need someone to change (our) blocking/Receiving TE’s

  9. RastaMon Says:

    Absolutely !!!!! @ 7…no problem with me !

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If brittle bones makes the roster I’ll throw up..for real

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’ve been saying this for a while! Ebron is a Vernon Davis type athlete and can stretch the field and go over the middle. He’d be a great asset to Glennon/McCown!

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Former Head Coach (Colorado St.)- Jon Embree (Our new Tight Ends Coach)-Has inside knowledge on TE Crockett Gillmore. So I’m sure he’ll get a look

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lol, Vernon Davis is a freak of an athlete-Dudes 40 yard dash time was 4.38 seconds. His vertical, Long Jump and cone drills were insane. Nah, brotha -Ebron is not that kinda dude

  14. BigMacAttack Says:

I like trading down but if Johnny Football is on the board at #7 I’m taking him. I think he can be great.

  15. Captain Stagger Says:

Well that would be a waste of a pick……

  16. JWBucs Says:

I like the idea of taking Enron at #7. They wouldn’t be able to trade down more than 1 or 2 spots to get him cause no way he gets out of the top 10. Although not as fast as Davis, he’s a much better TE prospect than Davis was.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    Big fan of Ebron!

  18. MR.T Says:

I doubt they will draft him with Myers being signed. More likely OL, LB, WR or QB

  19. Bob Digital Says:

Pass. Tim Wright, aside from the td he dropped in his first game, showed great hands, and is as big and athletic a tight end as you’ll find in the draft. Don’t fix what isn’t a problem

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Bob Digital…Tedford’s offense is said use multiple TE’s.

    • Brandon Coleman
    • Cody Hoffman
    • L’Damian Washington

    ===============

Bro, you realize that Washington weighs less than 200 lbs, right? He’s downright skinny. Brandon Coleman, I can see that… Cody Hoffman…it might be his only way to stick in the league… but Washington is strictly an outside the numbers, vertical wide receiver.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Brandon

Lol, I didn’t say it was gonna be easy. But remember this is a project (You already have 2 similar TE’s) So you can take a chance on a later round developmental prospect-Of course you never project how losing or gaining weight will change a particular player. But we have a verrrry good TE Coach-

So Red shirting the kid for the 1st year or 2-Get him a mean nutritionist, teach him all of the nuances for the position. And you just might have an extremely explosion Move Tight end in a year or two. I’m sure you’ve seen similar projects, pay huge dividends over the years.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Brandon

Sad about Hoffman, a good talent-Just can never stay healthy.

  24. JWBucs Says:

Buc1987 hit it on the head. Now that they have Meyers makes it more likely that they draft another TE. Tedford loves going two TE’s.

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I’ve been talking about Fiedorowicz for months

Now if we can pick up and additional 2nd round pick or a high 3rd. That TE out IOWA C.J. Fiedorowicz (6-6 265) Would be a great addition to the roster. Great blocking with soft hands. Plus the kid a freaking mammoth. Him and Taylor Lewan would help with that much needed attitude adjustment.

Glad to hear we kicking the tires on the big guy:
    – @EricDellaratta
Iowa TE C.J. Fiedorowicz will visit the Buccaneers, according to http://NFL.com . Likely 4th-5th round. Bucs dont have a 4th rounder

  26. andres Says:

Some crack head ideas on this site good Lord!

  27. PRBucFan Says:

    God no…

  28. Kevin Says:

I’d rather get Watkins or Mike Evans….

  29. Jordan Says:

Joe, don’t forget that Jason Licht was with the Patriots when they selected Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski in the same draft. Eric Ebron is a real possibility, although Gronk and the Murderer weren’t taken until the 2nd and 4th round.

  30. owlykat Says:

Unless they carry four TEs I can’t see the Bucks wasting a seventh pick on another TE. You know they already have two good pass catching TEs and they will have to keep at least one blocking TE–I just don’t think this is a smart move. We need a QB at 7 not another TE, who is not even a two way TE.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

lol I was just saying I like the guy. I didn’t say anything about taking him at 7. That would be a no for me as well.

  32. bucslandonrevisisland Says:

Cj mosley i only want another beast lb an for some odd reason believe its Cj

  33. Brain Says:

The replies in this thread are hilarious. Ebron is going top 12, probably top 10 so if you trade down to the mid-teens he won’t be available.

If we fired Schiano earlier and tanked the season instead of winning meaningless games down the stretch we wouldn’t be in this predicament as we’d be guaranteed a top OL/DL prospect. Instead we’ll likely have to choose between Evans, Ebron and other 2nd-tier talents.

  34. biff barker Says:

Meh, I’d love nothing more than a great TE, but @7 overall, it’s just too pricey.
We had a converted UDFA WR who caught almost 50 passes last year.

    DL, OL, WR.

  35. Cobraboy Says:

Ever notice how many of the great offenses have monster TE’s?

  36. SeedofChucke007 Says:

The Tight end position would be a major addition to a staggered offense, but using a crucial 1st Rounder on a flex is a bit insane. Offensive Tackle is a must and Frankly T. Lewan is a sure fire coaches thriller. Groomed and athletic enough to dominant at the pro level. The Fact that 7 is where the team is at is unique trading down is ideal but highly unlikely. upgrading at tight end is smart but let us be the smartest. Coach Tedford needs a TE who can help Qb, but the team’s success will be through 22 run game. Austin Stef- Jenkins in the second round is a steal and futuristically a look back A+ pick.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

I’ve watch this guy play a couple of times and let me tell you he’s a beast. It looks like some folks here have forgotten how important the TE position is to the QB.
Wright needs to eat some sandwiches and Myers is serviceable. Having a stud TE makes any offense better. At #7 though, I’m not sure.
Beast though. The games that I saw, nobody could cover him.
