Mike Kafka Signed By Bucs

February 10th, 2014
Bucs new QB Mike Kafka.

Bucs new QB Mike Kafka.

Well, the Bucs did indeed sign a free agent quarterback from the Eagles. But it wasn’t that one.

Amid rumors that the Bucs are hot on the trail of Michael Vick, his former backup, Mike Kafka, was signed today by the Bucs, so says NFL insider Adam Schefter of BSPN.

@AdamSchefter: Buccaneers have signed QB Mike Kafka, agent Mike McCartney said via Twitter.

So if the Bucs, and Lovie Smith and Jason Licht, are so enamored with Bucs incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon, why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks? At best, this may be a sign that Dan Orlovsky is history with the Bucs. At worst, it signals the Bucs simply are not that won over by Glennon to believe Glennon can lead the team to the postseason.

In limited duty, Kafka, a Northwestern product, has completed 11 of 16 passes and two interceptions without a touchdown.

Bucs fans may remember Kafka best as the quarterback who started for Northwestern in a memorable overtime thriller against Auburn in an overtime loss at the 2010 Outback Bowl.

“So if the Bucs, and Lovie Smith and Jason Licht, are so enamored with Bucs incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon, why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks?”

…….maybe because the team doesn’t have a backup quarterback at the moment…..

  2. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Why are they trying to land so many Quarterbacks??? Because someone has to run the practice squad while MG8 “The Franchise” warms up with the first team Offense!

  3. bwf921 Says:

OMG this is not starting well. I hope this means there will be 4-5 no-names Glennon included with someone that can actually play.

  4. Buc1987 Says:

Why are they trying to land so many Quarterbacks?

    For competition ya silly Sally.

  5. BucfaninMO Says:

Does this mean our QB controversy is over?

  6. 1976Buc Says:

    Kafka….and?

  7. Buc1987 Says:

I guess Vick might not be coming after all.

    What a shame. (sarcasm)

  8. Orca Says:

“why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks?”

Uuuuhhh, what other QBs do we have solid evidence of them trying to land? ZERO. It’s crazy how rumors become fact in the offseason.

This would be called competition, by the way.

  9. Nick H Says:

If Kafka is anything other than a backup QB the franchise is in a seriously bad spot

  10. ROBERT6 Says:

    6’3 and 225lbs

doesn’t sound like hey are looking for a running QB.

but besides, if they were going to move up in the draft they need a smokescreen

  11. Buc1987 Says:

    Per Pat Yasinskas BSPN

Kafka was a fourth-round pick by Philadelphia in 2010 and spent two seasons as a backup with the Eagles. Kafka was out of the NFL last season after being released by Jacksonville.

Kafka, 26, has appeared in four NFL games and attempted 16 passes. Kafka isn’t a threat to beat out Mike Glennon for the starting job. Dan Orlovsky, last year’s backup, is scheduled to become a free agent and the Bucs could bring in someone to compete with Glennon. Kafka is likely to compete with Jordan Rodgers for the third quarterback spot.

  12. Tgreg Says:

The Bucs must certainly use Joe as their basis for personnel evaluations. The massive groundswell of anti-Glennon sentiment Joe cultivated at Super Bowl Week has them in a panic.

  13. Uk_Buc Says:

It makes more sense to have competition from another pocket passer than one who is fundamentally different player, such as “pull it down and run” Vick.

Always found it weird when teams take two such different QBs, and then if one goes down, need to completely change the offense or force the backup to play a game not necessarily suited to them.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Per Joe – JBF

“So if the Bucs, and Lovie Smith and Jason Licht, are so enamored with Bucs incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon, why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks? At best, this may be a sign that Dan Orlovsky is history with the Bucs. At worst, it signals the Bucs simply are not that won over by Glennon to believe Glennon can lead the team to the postseason.”

The two statements between Yasinskas and Joe are 2 completely different takes on Kafka.

Joe makes it seem like Kafka is there to possibly threaten Glennon’s job.

Yasinskas makes it look like, meh. No big deal.

  15. Jeagan1999 Says:

“…why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks?” …Because you want a few decent vets around to help push Mike Glennon, who will be our starter this year. Since we WILL NOT be spending a high draft pick on a QB this year, you bring in competition via free agency!

Joe’s hard on for Johnny Football just deflated a little.

  16. Jeagan1999 Says:

@ UK_Buc “Always found it weird when teams take two such different QBs”…Agreed. It’s almost like you have to run two different systems with different plays, sub-packages, protections, etc.. The end result is teams usually are not effective in either system!

  17. scotty Says:

it means glennon will start and kafka will back him up.they love glennon

  18. bucs4lyfe Says:

we really have some delusional fans around the bay area

A “franchise Quarterback” is easily defined by a team like the panthers, if they had the number 1 overall pick they wouldnt be using it on a quarterback. theres not one single person on this earth that thinks if the bucs had number one pick they shouldnt use it on a qb…..probably the same fools that dubbed josh freeman a franchise quarterback after playing half his rookie season

until glennon beats out a qb equal to or better than matt flynn like say russell wilson did he’s nothing but another guy

i’ll take it a step further, he couldnt beat out josh freeman his rookie season despite getting ALL the reps…..second year quarterbacks usually play about the same or have sophmore slumps because teams have an entire season and of game tape and the offseason to expose weaknesses….teams make moves simply to throw teams off that are trying to figure out what they will do with their picks….if greg schiano can get rid of a 1st round pick, glennon as a third isnt all that safe as far as crowning him the starter boy needs some steroids for that noodle of an arm he has

  19. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    At least it’s not Vick.

  20. Orca Says:

For those already using this signing as evidence of *anything*, why not let the whole offseason play out?

  22. Tampabaybucfan Says:

At this point it means very little….probably means Dan O is gone and that’s about it.

  23. Eric Says:

Just a warm body. Means nothing.

  24. bucs4lyfe Says:

i dont care who we bring in, michael vick, mark sanchez mr butt fumble……bring in all the qb’s you want, glennon ill be behind him 1000% if he beats out all challengers. if you are a 4 win team there should be competition at just about every position except for a few on defense and running back. beat out a veteran glennon and ill give him your props because he didnt do enough last year….if we were in the afc then we’d have plenty of time to develop but most teams in the nfc are loaded i dont glennon putting up big points, i see him being a game manager…we’ve already seen the game manager mentality and schiano sucked at it so did our quarterbacks…..give me somebody that can make a team pay for loading up the box either by running or deep balls, both of which napolean dynamite cant do

  25. Buc1987 Says:

bucs4lyfe..noodle of an arm? I think Glennon has bigger guns than Manziel. Now that’s a noodle arm.

  26. bwf921 Says:

Ok so I just watched a youtube video of this guy not knowing who he is. Does he look terrible, no. Does Glennon look terrible, no. But come on Bucs can we please please have a franchise QB. A jersey that we can buy and keep for 10 years. Yes I know, that is hard to find, but not impossible. The top QB’s in the league with exception to Brady were all high round picks. Please draft Garrapolo in the 2nd or drop the hammer and bring us Johnny Football. PLEASE !!!!!@#@*

  27. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Bucs also waive T Gabe Carimi, RB Michael Hill, QB Jordan Rodgers and release DT Derek Lamdri.

    Wooohooo…let the offseason begin.

  28. Don't like the dirty birds Says:

How about our 6th round pick this year. he was just released.

In other transactions, the Bucs announced they have released quarterback Jordan Rodgers, offensive lineman Gabe Carimi, defensive tackle Derek Landri and running back Michael Hill.

  29. mike n Says:

Klafka is a camp arm with a chance to win the #3 postion… nothing more. Has no effect on vick, glennon or the draft. Gabe carimi cut too, thats a waste of a 6th rd pick!

  30. lightningbuc Says:

I’m the #1 card carrying member of the Kafka Mob!

  31. Patrick Says:

Keep Glennon, sign Vick, and draft Aaron Murray.

That’s if we can’t get somehow land Manziel.

  32. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Buc1987

LOL exactly….your comparing glennon’s arm to a college quarterback instead of an NFL QB. someone was saying he had one of the weaker arms in the nfl combine, just imagine that 40 time….he probably would have been there in the 4th or 5th round for the taking

  33. Harry Says:

    WHO?

I like this better than Vick to be honest. Maybe its a sign we are moving up in the draft to FINALLY pick our franchise QB!!!!!

  34. Kevin Says:

I’d like to see Tedford work with Jordan Rodgers a little bit. Maybe something could happen there? I know this guy better not be starting for us next year or I won’t be watching any buds games

  35. Mumbles Says:

I think this is the end for Jordan Rodgers. I think this is the beginning of Buc house cleaning!

  36. Joe Says:

    WHO?

I like this better than Vick to be honest. Maybe its a sign we are moving up in the draft to FINALLY pick our franchise QB!!!!!

Um, if you don’t know who Kafka is, how could you like the move???

  37. scotty Says:

    they just cut rodgers

  38. Joe Says:

    Buc1987:

May want to re-read the excerpt of Joe’s you posted. smh

  39. NY Buc Says:

Hopefully that’s the last Eagles QB we add for awhile. While I know my lack of any fear of Kafka usurping Glennon as our starting QB may be perceived as blind Glennon Mob mentality by some, so far it’s looking like the coaches are fine with Glennon unless they use their 1st round pick on a QB.

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

    Let the offseason begin!!!
You have to be pretty bad to be an OL on this team and get cut, sorry Gabe!

  41. SAMCRO Says:

Kafka , cheap camp arm fighting for #3 spot

  42. Harry Says:

    @Joe Says:
“…Um, if you don’t know who Kafka is, how could you like the move???”

Sorry, I probably did not express that very well. But I feel that, for the most part, Vick = Cassel = McCown, etc. I dont feel any of them are that much better than MG8, if at all. On top of that, when was the last time Vick played 16 full games?

The reason I like it better, is that FA money we might spend on Vick can be spent on a more productive starter at another positions (Allen, Tillman, Cooper, etc). Vick is going to be maybe $5M or more? I know it is argumentative, but what are we gaining spending it on Vick when MG8 is almost as good? I just don’t see the return.

Further, it may be a sign we are going to move up in the draft to get Teddy/Johnny… call me a dreamer!

  43. Eric Says:

If these moves have any consequence at all, we are in big trouble.

  44. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Any moves made at this point are fringe training camp fodder.

Btw, Carimi was a nesessary move because of injuries. What else was Dom supposed to do midseason?

  45. bucs4lyfe Says:

mike glennon better than vick or matt cassell or mccown….guess some people are seriously expecting us to go to the playoffs with mg8 lol not anyone in the media or ex players or any sports network, not even bucs fans…just mike glennon fans thinks we have the quarterback that will win us a superbowl….wow so much for analysis, mark it down joe mike glennon is about to be a superbowl quarterback even though he didnt play well enough last year to get any kind of vote of confidence he will be the starting going into next season

  46. Westsidebucsfan Says:

That was a waste of a 6th round pick

  47. BoJim Says:

    Deal with it “coach”.

  48. Capt. Tim Says:

We signed the second best Eagles QB.
That’s about it. He’s camp fodder- but still Far Superior to the BSPN hype failure known as Michael “dog kicker” Vick.
The only thing Vick has ever accomplished in his career, was to slobber job some exec at BSPN.

They raved and gushed about this loser, while he lost game after game. One of the more disgusting sales jobs I’ve witnessed- especially considering he was nothing more than a fragile running back

Oh, and an ok dog fighter

  49. Rob Says:

““So if the Bucs, and Lovie Smith and Jason Licht, are so enamored with Bucs incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon, why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks?””

Because teams usually bring around 4 arms to camp, and they’re not actually going to sign Vick?

  50. bucs4lyfe Says:

    LOL @BoJim

GO BUCS!!! here’s to hoping more of those wounded ducks he throws go for more touchdowns

  51. gotbbucs Says:

I thought Joe refused to post articles about bottom of the roster acquisitions. Why is he doing it now?

“So if the Bucs, and Lovie Smith and Jason Licht, are so enamored with Bucs incumbent starting quarterback Mike Glennon, why are they trying to land so many quarterbacks?”

Will you give us a freaking break on this crap? Good Lord. They traded in one piece of junk for another one with a little less rust on it.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

gotbbucs…I’ll bet you a $100.00 Joe has no idea what you are talking about. It’ll be what, who me, not me, no way.

This is an easy one: No one has ever even heard of this guy so I seriously doubt he is here to compete with Glennon. Sounds to me like they brought in someone to compete for the back up spot.
