Looks Like Jeff Tedford’s Coming

January 1st, 2014
It seems college QB guru Jeff Tedford will be Lovie Smith's offensive coordinator with the Bucs.

It seems college QB guru Jeff Tedford will be Lovie Smith’s offensive coordinator with the Bucs.

So one questions many Bucs fans had about a potential hire of Lovie Smith as new head coach was what he’ll do about the offense? Smith is about as much of a Father Dungy clone as you will find, meaning offense is an annoyance to him, hence why Smith hired such noted offensive wizards in the likes of Ron Turner and Mike Tice as offensive coordinators.

The results were painfully predictable.

In the current NFL, if you don’t have an offense, if you don’t have a quarterback, you are SOL. And no, with apologies to former Bucs commander Greg Schiano, Mike Glennon was not and is not the answer.

Last week, CBS Sports threw out the notion that if the Bucs did hire Smith, then he would also bring former college quarterback guru Jeff Tedford along for the ride as a package deal. Per Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, that is apparently happening.

@BFeldmanCBS: As CBS reported this wk, Jeff Tedford is expected to be Lovie Smith’s OC (w #Bucs) but the details just starting to be worked out per source

Joe will have more about Tedford in the morning. To be honest, Joe is torn about Tedford. It is nice that Smith is recognizing his mistakes of the past and is aware he must have an offense that resembles something utilized in the post-World War II era.

Tedford on the other hand, well, is an open book of sorts on the NFL level.

    Marinelli as DC?

    Marinelli as DC?

Thought he was under contract with the Cowboys.

If the Bucs could lure him, now THAT would get Joe excited.

  3. DontBucNH8 Says:

    Don’t like it!!!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tedford knows QBs and you can best believe that will be his first order of business…He will be in an excellent posiition to evaluate Glennon and, if necessary draft some competition or find a suitable FA.
I can guarantee this…If Glennon wins the starting job…he will be a much better QB under Tedford.

  5. RED MAN Says:

Rumors are Frazier as DC which would be solid IMO

  6. Mach Says:

I think Tedford has an 82-57 record as a HC which means he is doing somehing right with his offense..give the guy a chance I guess.. Also heard frazer as DC is a done deal..

  7. BucYou Says:

Thought I just saw where Frazier has agreed to be DC?

  8. Buc1987 Says:

and the theme from Jeopardy plays on…

  9. Nate_tweetz Says:

Honestly, I am not too familiar with Tedford… I can’t get too excited about him right now. He is a big unknown to me. Should be interesting to say the least, but I will have to reserve my “excitement” for a later date.

  10. Jon Says:

Hope it’s not tedford. Numbers in college recently are horrible. Shula 2.0, at least the 90’s Shula!

  11. BucYou Says:

Wikipedia already lists Tedford as Bucs OC…

  12. Dhutch81 Says:

What type of offense does Telford run? Is is spread, run heavy, west coast etc?

  13. eric2 Says:

Don’t want to see Rob Marinelli run our defense are you kidding me the guy is nothing more then a great d line coach bring in Frazier to run the defense. The Johnny Football love fest you have let it go this guy will not hold up in the NFL with the way he run around he is to small. I don’t know if MG the answer but he is not as bad as you try and make him out to be either. I will make the argument that MG is just as good if not better then Brad Johnson at the same stage of their careers and why can’t he get better you show me one game they protected him and he did not perform. Fill the major holes first! Then worry about QB!

  14. patrickbucs Says:

    @Jon

Yes Tedford was horrific at Cal lol. Making comments like that in today’s world of google isn’t the brightest.

We signed the best coach available and it finally should give us some stability. Now I hope we draft Manziel. Which he more that likely won’t be there at 7 but I also wouldn’t give the farm and the house to get him. Players like the DB Dennard from Sparty or Sammie Watkins would give us a huge boost. As would Barr if he somehow slipped. IF Manziel is gone at #7 I would seriously look at Dennard. After his combine he will sky rocket and would be a great pick at #7. His shut down ability is unmatched in this draft. IMO

  16. Keith Says:

Is anyone sure he knows how to call plays?

  17. Joe Says:

Please document where Joe wrote he didn’t want to see Marinelli back? Joe would uncork a bottle of bubbly if that happened.

What type of offense does Telford run?

    Stay tuned for tomorrow morning.

  19. PRBucFan Says:

Your friend Shawn King seems to think the Cowboys would let Marinelli take the job cause apparantly there’s an unspoken thing where you don’t prevent one of your guys to take a promotion.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lovie Smith had a lot of time and many options to choose his OC….he also realizes his strength is defense….I trust this was a measured decision for him based on considerable research.

I really like the way this is coming together quickly….it is good for the current team to know their new coaches ASAP…

That’s generally correct, but as we all saw when Schiano tried to hire assistants, he had doors slammed in his face.

Jones would likely want compensation. As in legal tender.

  22. zam Says:

You know what’s nice? To be the FIRST team to hire a coach instead of the last. Sure beats picking at scraps for assistants again.

  23. PRBucFan Says:

Oh I see, well maybe with it being Lovie who is so respected he can make it happen.

    Hopefully, crossing my fingers

  24. Northend Says:

Don’t think Tedford is all QB,he has mentored and groomed some damn fine RB in his offense.

    WR Desean Jackson

  25. Alexandre Phaneuf Says:

Hey Joe do u have any name in mine for the Special Team coach ?

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hell…Glazers got cash….Jerry has cash….give him some more cash!!!
Didn’t we give Al Davis a bundle of cash (I think 8mil) for Chucky…see how that turned out.
I’m OK with Frazier though…..some coaches aren’t meant to be HC….Raheem is a good example….doesn’t mean they can’t be great assistants.

  27. Joe Says:

Hey Joe do u have any name in mine for the Special Team coach ?

    LOL!!!

  28. stanglassman Says:

Or 2nd team. Houston was the 1st but I get your point. Thanks joe I’m looking forward to your article on Tedford in the morning.

  29. PRBucFan Says:

My sportcenter alert just said Marinelli will be our DC!!!!!!

  30. Macabee Says:

    Joe,

Rumors are flying. Pat Yasinskas is reporting Marinelli as DC. Hope that’s right!

  31. Jon Says:

@ patrickbucs- oh I’m sorry I figured if they had a good offense in college or a series of good years that would matter. All I was saying is he hasn’t lately. I have no idea if he is good or not.

    Down goes Frazier!

  34. bucsguy Says:

Tedford was horrific at cal? They were never more relevant than when he was the coach the thing about cal is they don’t drop the academics because you are a baller out is the BEST public university in the country bar none, tedford has 8 countem 8 qbs that went to the league and 2 that won superbowls. The best thing about him is he is to old to leave to take another hc job at least in the nfl. I love the hire and an ready for the draft.

  35. Hank Says:

Would LOVE to see Norv Turner as QB Coach!

  36. Stu Laake Says:

Tedford has zero NFL play calling experience…if he is such a QB guru, let him cut his teeth teaching NFL QBs and hire Norv Turner as our OC or Hue Jackson

  37. trubucfan22 Says:

Tedford may not have had the greatest qbs to work with every year. But he did a damn fine job of making those qbs a ton of money. Just look at how many first round qbs his system produced.

He made david carr look like a first overall pick. That in its self is a major accomplishment.

  38. trubucfan22 Says:

Best of all you have a guy who is used to calling plays. Sullivan, as much as he tried was just learning how to do that (not to mention he was incredibly micro managed by schiano.)

  39. JoeNathan Says:

Bring in Leslie Frazier as an assistant coach/DL coach, Mike Singletary a LB coach, and Mike Tice to call plays. The Buc’s would probably have the most old school coaching staff in history as well as the most coaches with head coaching experience in the history of the league. All of those coaches could have probably played better than some of the current roster this year.

  40. White Tiger Says:

This seems to follow the Dungy plan…strong defense, set the defense first…mediocre offense. Anyone remember Mike Shula…

Jeff Tedford is a system coach – he’s coached QB’s everywhere – he got stuck at Cal.

His claim to fame was Aaron Rogers – but before Aaron Rogers, he’s also known for sending the following names into the NFL:

Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington, and Kyle Boller.

    He’s 1 for 6…and nobody recently.

    He’s Mike Shula.

    meh.

  41. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Tedford is also known for having a notoriously small playbook which can be rather predictable. I hope for our sake that issue is mended before we start week 1. I am extremely happy with our new staff. It is leaps and bounds above our last 2 coaching staffs.
