Back To Earth For Mike Glennon

December 1st, 2013

Joe’s not down on Mike Glennon for his big mistakes today. It’s what rookie quarterbacks do. Glennon just hadn’t been doing it much.

Despite a beautifully thrown ball to Vincent Jackson and other sharp throws, Joe knows many Bucs fans are ready to stop all plans to erect a Glennon monument on Dale Mabry Highway.

Today, Glennon didn’t look very special, and that’s an ominous feeling in a division with Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and Drew Brees. That’s not Glennon’s fault. It’s just the reality facing Bucs fans who dream of Super Bowls, not just winning records.

Again, Joe’s not down on Glennon. The kid has outperformed Joe’s wildest dreams for him in 2013. But the point is Glennon still has a long way to go to make Joe scratch Johnny Football quarterback off Joe’s 2014 NFL Draft wish list.

Glennon’s faces the beatable Bills next Sunday in Tampa, but he’s also got a few nasty and challenging defenses to face after that to close the season. The Rams get after the quarterback, the 49ers have the fourth-ranked pass defense, and the Saints roll out all kinds of blitzes and confusing looks out of their 3-4 defense.

Joe’s glad Glennon will get to prove himself and learn at the same time. Glennon’s got all kinds opportunities to show Bucs fans he’s “the man” going forward. But like his head coach, he does have more to prove in December.

Ok Joe this is the last comment I’ll make about the click thing. Its not so much having to click as it is having to keep hitting the back button everytime I’m ready to read the next article. I suggest taking a page of PFT’s book and having a Headline page leading into an article page that’s fully scrollable. And click for comments. This is just a pain in the ass.

  2. JerseyBucsFan Says:

Mike isn’t a bad qb but as long as this coach is here we can forget about getting a first round qb even if jomny football was at our pick (which I want)

  3. Tim Says:

Im not sure what to think about him so far. Sure hes looked pretty good at times. Even last week his stats looked pretty good. But we needed 4-5 turnovers to win that game. If hes the man then I hope he succeeds. After 3-4 years of up and down play from Freeman im just worried that we have another QB who is decent. But cant get us to that next level. And we’ll just be in the middle of the pack.

Glennon had very little time and the O-line really was dominated….I would have liked to have seen more passes to the backs…TE and short passes in the slot….a couple of screens….It looks like we were run, play-action and deep and that just didn’t get it done today.
    Glennon didn’t have a good game today….but I ask…Who did?

Understand your concern. Joe has one question — that Joe asked twice yesterday and no one has yet to answer — do you also lodge the same complaints at TBO, the Times, PR, FOX Sports, BSPN, Deadspin, TheBigLead, and countless others for the very same thing?

  6. Luther Says:

    Answer: No we don’t Joe

@Joe, your site is the only site I really go to because I hate having to click extra stuff to read an article. I’ve been patient while you feel this out. However it is quite annoying. Most of us don’t miss an article because we’re here every hour or less sometimes. I’m always on my phone, so it takes too much time to load a read more and then click back and wait again. Just my 2 cents. Can it or not I’m not going anywhere so it’s up to you if you keep it or not.

  8. Justin Says:

Yeah Manziel has looked amazing past couple weeks

  9. Pruritus Ani Says:

Not a Glennon apologist and I am not sure he is a long term solution. Just last week some were willing to slap a Franchise Tag on him..Yes, just last week.

For today, you have to take into consideration

    1) Rookie
    2) Injuries (running back x 2) (wide receivers) (tight ends).
    3) Poor blocking at times
    4) Way too predictable play calling…

If he had at least 2) and 3), I think we could give him a fair evaluation. He has come in and won 3 games and did it without the weapons that Freeman had. So, I’d give him at least to the end of the season to show what he’s got. He may be no better than a number #2 or perhaps even a starter for a team that has the tools that will play to his strengths.

Remember, last year when they were continuing to develop the playbook and drafting players and signing FA on the offensive side of the ball, it wasn’t with Glennon in mind. This offseason will be interesting. Do they stay with Glennon and build the offense around what he can do/can’t do or go with someone else?

What a joke. Let’s grab one from college put him in a Bucs uniform and off to the Super Bowl we go. I don’t care if it is “Johnny Football” or any other college QB. This is the NFL not college. Very few need no development time. How long do you plan to give this star to say he is indeed the man? Everytime we get beat by a great team better than ours the first thing people call for is to grab a QB first from college . Try looking at the real problem. And it’s not the QB.

  11. Mr. Patrick Says:

This is what a 23 year old rookie QB looks like when his 0-Line is badly getting beaten, his receivers cant get open and his OC is getting out coached

Clicked every read more link today and can’t find one post from either Couch Fan or Buc1987. Strange!

  13. Chuck Robinson Says:

Joe – the click thing is fine. Running a website for a living is tough and increasing page views to improve CPM, and thus revenue, is perfectly normal. Maybe better teaser text would be my only suggestion but keep on doing the great work you do and good luck.

  14. Gt40bear Says:

Even if Glennon isn’t the man moving forward, (I would like to see him try with all weapons available) do you REALLY want to bring party hearty JohnnyFootball to Tampa? If Leaky Freeman developed trouble with the night life here, what do you expect the suddenly mortal looking JFoot. to do? You’d have to have a pole installed at OBP to get his attention! BTW, if LSU & Mizzou defenses can handle him, what will NFL defenses do?

  15. chris Says:

It was expected sooner or later, that Glennon would have a game like this. This still doesn’t change my opinion on him. He’s going to have his rookie moments. Carolina’s defense is nasty. I do think some bad calls destroyed our drives. Vincent Jackson was hit in stride perfectly, but he’s jsut not a burner.

Carolina is just a legit very good team. They allow 13PPG on defense. And that isn’t against any slouches either. Brady struggled. They went into SF and beat them.

  16. Danny Says:

@Joe To be honest I don’t frequent most of those pages at all; haven’t lived in Tampa for something like 10 years so I only see TBO if it’s linked here or on PFT. I have the Pat Yasinkas blog on my favorites list and that’s about it as far as ESPN goes… And it’s not set up this way. Maybe we’re just spoiled, who knows. I was only trying to offer a suggestion as someone who drops by this page a couple of times a day both on the phone and on the computer. And to be honest, most other pages are not set up like this; you click headlines to see articles, so it’s not really a comparison. Just my opinion, humbly, and with all respect. Still love the page, but not crazy about the adjustment.

LOL very busy day man. Hanging up miles of Christmas lights on the outside of my house. I actually stopped watching the game after the 1st half. It was apparent we have no O-line what-so-ever and Penn’s career is over. Sheridan got worked over very badly and he definitely needs to go too.
Also I’ll add, I fully expected them to lose anyways. Just like I do every week from here on out. If they win, they win.

I really don’t know what else more to tell ya man.

  18. Harry Says:

I just don’t see Glennon as the long term answer. He has far out preformed what I expected, but I rarely see the “WOW” factor in his play, not just this game, every game. Sure, some are better than others, but its not there.

I don’t at all blame him for the loss today; coaching sucked, both lines sucked, play calling was awful. That has nothing to do with it. As I said, the “WOW” factor is rare in commodity when Glennon plays.

  19. Harry Says:

Hey Joe, a suggestion. I don’t find it hard to get back to the main page. But if it is bothering some ppl, why not put a “return to main page button” at the end of each article, or at the bottom of the comments, or, better yet, in both spots?

  20. thomas Says:

Hello Back-Up QB. Plain and Simple noting else to say.

  21. Bruce Says:

Glennon looked scared all day. If a defender even get within 2 steps of him he balls up and just falls to the ground. Nice duck pass (under thrown seems to be par for the course with this guy) and nice fumble. Send this fool back to the Serengeti with the rest of the Giraffes.

  22. Upgrayedd Says:

    @Joe,

as for the click thing, your format was perfect before. Homepage, read, scroll. Know Your Audience…. Inebriated sausage fingered grunts… you’re slowly morphing into one of those teasing TMZ type websites that my girlfriend loves. c’mon man!

now youre throwing in more clicks and back-clicks….f – that. it wasnt broke before,…. now it is. if you want us to keep clicking just to get to one simple read, might as well sign a deal with ESPN… and make us watch a 30 second video before each article.

You guys really need to quit your whining about the changes JoeBucsFan.com has made. It’s not about just you, Joe wrote a whole freaking piece on this dumb a** subject. I suggest you read it again maybe slowly this time and try to understand that it is about a larger audience.
